While perhaps too nihilistic for the commercial mainstream, this harrowing, high-voltage thriller ought to bring Jones (The Elements of Hitting) the wide recognition that eluded his two previous novels. A gritty, claustrophobic blend of Jim Thompson and James Dickey, it depicts the seven-day ordeal of a backwoods poacher who accidentally shoots a runaway girl. Set in an unnamed, seedy, mountain town, the novel opens as reclusive John Moon, whose wife and young son have recently left, hunts a buck into a canyon in the state preserve adjacent to his trailer home (which sits on farmland repossessed from his family by the bank some years before). There he fires a shot into a thicket, killing not the buck but teenage Ingrid Banes, who is hiding out with a cache of $100,000. In a panic, Moon stashes the body and takes the cash, hoping to facilitate a reconciliation with his wife, only to find it's the property of Banes's sadistic boyfriend, Waylon, and his psychopathic partner, "the Hen," who's linked to an unsolved local torture/murder case. Moon's hardscrabble world then begins to implode: Banes's body resurfaces, and resurfaces; overwhelmed with guilt, Moon decides to give her a proper burial, as Waylon and the Hen close in. With great economy, surprising pathos and a keen sense of the grotesque, Jones weaves this story toward a shocking showdown in the forest.

I'll always wonder how much of an impact a negative box office result can have on a burgeoning career of an indie filmmaker. Profit margins is obviously not a tool to evaluate talent, and while we have ample proof of what a breakout hit can do, I'm guessing that bad B.O can surely put a hamper on future projects. David Jacobson will surely leave a larger imprint than he did with Down in the Valley, with the project he'll be shooting in the new year.

Screen Daily reports that Jacobson will be working with the not too shabby foursome of Michael Fassbender, Forest Whitaker, William H. Macy and Thomas Haden Church this January on A Single Shot. Being packaged and sold at the AFM by HanWay Films, the thriller (which will shoot in the minus weather on tough, Canadian turf) is based on a screenplay written by Matthew F Jones who adapted from his own novel. Unanimous Pictures' Chris Coen is producing and so is Brad Arseneau. Kevin Hicks will serve as executive producer for Northern United Film and Media.

I'm not happy with the news that the movie will be delayed...but if you want to work in the movies, you can apply.

I guess if Michael has nothing to do, he can make appearances at all the awards' shows that IB's cast has been nominated.

Group seeks actors for films

An open casting call has been issued by the newly formed Film Institute of Northern Ontario, which is looking to put together a database of actors for future projects, as well as an upcoming feature by American director David Jacobson.

Jacobson was the writer and director of the 2005 film, Down in the Valley, which starred Edward Norton.

His new project, A Single Shot, has created some buzz with the casting of Michael Fassbender (the English lieutenant from Inglourious Basterds), as well as William Macy and Thomas Haden Church. Mickey Rourke has also been offered a part.

Local businesswoman Christine Sola and Larry Bernard, a former Sudburian who has worked at two Montreal film studios, were in the process of setting up the company they call FiNO when they received the call from Jacobson.

They have spent the past few weeks driving him to different locations, including Willisville, Manitoulin and Wawa.

Jacobson couldn't attend the interview at the company's studio -- also shared photographer Alfred Boyd in a former church in Gatchell -- however, he did send an e-mail.

In it, he explained Sola and Bernard sold him on the idea of shooting here. Originally, the film was to be set in the Catskills in upstate New York.

"So, when my producer suggested the idea of shooting our film in Northern Ontario, I was immediately filled with dread," Jacobson wrote. "To be totally frank, I really knew next to nothing about the area and had never heard of Sudbury.

"But, now after having spent a couple of weeks with you touring the area, I am totally in love with the place, or the 'Big Nickel' as I prefer to now call it."

Shooting was tentatively set for February, but may be delayed.

Bernard had returned to Sudbury to work on Brandon Nutt's film,Phase One,as part of the set decorating team.

Since 2001, he has lived in Montreal, where he has worked at two studios, including Ice Storm Digital, where served as a manager overseeing multiple sound stages. He also had a non-speaking role in Martin Scorcese's film,The Aviator.

FiNO has not yet been incorporated, but is in the process of doing so, said Sola.

Sola and Bernard are still in the process of defining what it will be and the services it will offer.

"What's going on here is the film business is booming. There is a reason why they are coming here," he said. "There are other projects that are interested in coming here -- a dozen or so.

"Because this is a relatively new place in terms of filmmaking, the incentives the province is offering and the (Northern Ontario Heritage Fund)."

The demand is big, but the infrastructure to make movies is not really there.

"We're just going by the demand. If they need Styrofoam, we're getting them styrofoam," said Bernard. "We've got a Meteo+ crew that needs work." (The francophone comedy, based in Sudbury, is wrapping up production).

Bernard described the company as being like an "invisible producer," helping out where needed.

FiNO plans to offer several services, including production, post-production and "film concierge," as well as casting and crew services through their sister company, FiNO Casting.

FiNO wants to promote the hiring of local talent be it cast or crew, as well as the buying of local products, Bernard said, adding the company's goal is "to create infrastructure that is self-sustaining."

They are not setting up to be in competition with Music Film in Motion, said Sola.

"We want to complement them and take their services one step further," Sola said.

The casting database fits with their hire-local mandate.

"With this casting call, we're going to create a data base," she said. "So that when a production comes into town, we can see here are all the locals that are available," she said.

"It's in the best interest to hire cast and crew in the north because they receive financial benefits."

Hollywood is coming to Sudbury in the big way during the next 12 months.

Los Angeles director David Jacobson will helmSingle ShotandBoot Trackshere, thanks to a partnership with Sudbury's Christine Sola, a local film entrepreneur who has just launched her new film production company, Big Nickel Motion Picture Factory.

"These are serious big shoots coming to Sudbury," Sola said.

"It's the most exciting thing that has happened to me."

When Sola met Jacobson, she said they instantly hit it off.

"I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. It's like winning the lottery."

They talked about filming in Sudbury and he came here on a secret trip to look at locations.

"David was here for two months, but we didn't want to tell anyone because we didn't want anyone to bug him," she said.

Jacobson has directed such films as Down in the Valley,starring Edward Norton, and Dahmer.

Sola said this is a great opportunity for Sudbury and the Northern Ontario film industry. Sola said Big Nickel Motion Picture Factory could "pave the way for other films to be shot in Sudbury."

"I'm helping to build a film infrastructure for Sudbury," she said. "The great thing about it is we are hiring local people as the crew.

"We won't have to ship them up from Toronto. The crew will be from Sudbury."

WhenPhase One-- a multimillion dollar science fiction movie directed by former Sudburian Brandon Nutt was shot in Sudbury in November and December, Sola said there was a lot of "bad light being put on it." That's because filming tied up local roads and other facilities.

Sola said she wants people to seeSingle ShotandBoot Tracks in a positive light.

"People don't realize people are spending millions and millions of dollars and creating jobs," she said. "The community needs to know it will benefit our economy. It's creating jobs in the North.

"We'll be hiring caterers, hairdressers. It's going to be good for the local economy. We're not hiring people from L.A., we're hiring people here. The only people from Los Angeles are the main lead actors and director."

In addition to good locations, Sola said it's cheaper for films to be shot in Canada.

"There are a lot of government incentives," she said. "There are tax breaks, grants and loans. They get a lot more money for a movie here."

Single Shotwill be filmed sometime in late summer in Sudbury and later in the British Islands.

When the film changes locations, the Sudbury crew will travel to continue working.

Hollywood actors Michael Fassbender, William H. Macy, Thomas Haden Church and Leslie Mann will star in Single Shot.

"Guys like Macy will be here for maybe a week because he has a small role, but the star, Michael, will probably be here for five or six weeks," Sola said.

The second film,Boot Tracks, based on a thriller written by Matthew F. Jones, will be filmed entirely in Sudbury.

Jacobson is interviewing actors for the film. Pre-production will take place some time in April or May.

When both films are completed and ready for the big screen, they will be shown at such film festivals as Cannes and Toronto.

City writer's novel to be filmed

She is listed as producer along with Chris Coen on the film Internet Movie Data Base (Imdb) for director David Jacobson's upcoming project,A Single Shot.

Michael Fassbender, William H. Macy and Thomas Haden Church have joined the cast of the film adaptation A Single Shot for HanWay Films and Unanimous Pictures, reports The Playlist.

Matthew F. Jones adapted the screenplay from his own novel about a poacher who accidentally kills a young runaway girl while hunting.

Trying to hide the evidence, he finds a large sum of money and soon has ruthless killers on his tail while his mental state begins to quickly deteriorate.

Shooting is slated to start in the Sudbury area as early as this summer once Fassbender has wrapped David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method.

Costello said he used software to turn his novel into a 117-page script.

"The way screenplays work is you get about a minute a page," he said. "So, you want to get between 90 and 120 pages."

Sola, who has read his novels, approached him about turning it into a film.

"She got in touch and said, 'I loved your last book and have started a production company,' " he said.

Initially, Jacobson was to be involved as director. Now it looks like he will be coming on as a producer.

"Nothing is written in stone yet," said Costello.
