"Genius" with Sean Penn?

Michael Fassbender Eyeing Lit World Drama ‘Genius’ With Sean Penn

EXCLUSIVE: Back last summer, it was revealed that Sean Penn was in talks to star in “Genius,” an adaptation of the National Book Award-winning non-fiction work “Max Perkins: Editor of Genius” by A. Scott Berg. Written by John Logan (”Gladiator”) (the script made the Black List back in 2007), the film would find Penn playing the legendary Perkins, a Scribner’s editor who worked with giants like F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Wolfe. And it appears one of the hottest rising young actors is now taking a look at the gestating film.

Sources close to the project have confirmed with The Playlist that Michael Fassbender is circling the project as well, though he isn’t signed on just yet. Then again, neither is Penn who was reported to be in talks last summer (that status apparently hasn’t changed and no he’s made no formal deal yet). That will have to change soon as we’re told the picture is gearing up to go in front of cameras this summer. Either they’ll be in or out and the production will have to look elsewhere, but both actors are interested, so it’s likely a matter of carving out deals.

The story focuses on Perkins’ relationship with Thomas Wolfe, who’s often cited as one of the 20th century’s greatest writers (and is a favorite of several Playlist staffers). Wolfe was a great writer, but a notoriously undisciplined one, and the two fought constantly — Perkins convinced the author to cut 90,000 words from his first novel, “Look Homeward, Angel,” and battled for two years over the length of the second. Wolfe eventually grew resentful of how much of his success was being attributed to Perkins and left the publishing house. Fassbender would be a great fit for Wolfe as the fiery, larger-than-life young author, and paired with Penn, it could be quite a formidable duo.

The film is set to be directed by River Road head and producer Bill Pohlad, marking his sophomore outing following 1990’s “Old Explorers.” Joaquin Phoenix was at one point eyeing “Genius” and early on, it nearly got off the ground with Lawrence Kasdan directing, but both have moved on.

While Penn remains committed to his work in Haiti, he will be seen on screen this year in Terrence Malick‘s “The Tree of Life” and Paolo Sorrentino‘s revenge thriller “This Must Be the Place.” Meanwhile, Fassbender continues to mix up blockbuster projects with more indie-minded fare, recently wrapping “X-Men: First Class,” and scheduled to start shooting “Shame,” the sex-addiction drama that finds him reteaming with “Hunger” director Steve McQueen.

Michael Fassbender Negotiating To Star In Genius

Michael Fassbender Negotiating To Star In Genius We will be seeing a lot of Michael Fassbender this year. After a less than stellar 2010, that included titles such as Centurion and Jonah Hex
, Fassbender is rebounding with six titles, including Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class, David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method and Steven Soderbergh's Haywire. If the year is as big as it should be, Fassbender could be an A-lister by December and rolling in offers, but he's already starting to fill out his schedule.

The Playlist reports that Fassbender is currently in negotiations for a part in Genius, an adaptation of the book Max Perkins: Editor of Genius by A. Scott Berg. Set to be directed by Bill Pohlad, the film is a biopic about the titular Perkins, who edited the works of greats such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Wolfe. Sean Penn has also been in negotiations for a role since last summer. It is unknown what role Fassbender will play in the film, but the story centers on Perkins' relationship with Wolfe, meaning that we might see Fassbender wearing a white suit and battle with the editor as he is forced to cut 90,000 words from his first novel, Look Homeward, Angel.

Bad 2010 or no, I'm willing to give Fassbender an infinite number of chances to impress me as much as he did playing Lt. Archie Hicox in Inglourious Basterds
. Here's hoping that this year doesn't make that too painstaking a task.

Michael Fassbender Eyes Sean Penn Starrer GENIUS
by Adam Chitwood Posted:January 7th, 2011 at 3:23 pm

Following his breakout role in Inglorious Basterds, Michael Fassbender has been courted for a number of films. The latest project that his name has been mentioned with is the adaptation of the National Book Award-winning non-fiction book Max Perkins: Editor of Genius. The film version, titled Genius, is being scripted by John Logan (Gladiator), and Sean Penn has been circling the starring role for some time now.

Perkins worked as a literary editor for such literary greats as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Wolfe. Penn would portray Perkins, while Fassbender is eyeing the role of Wolfe, with whom Perkins shared a complicated relationship in which they fought constantly. The Playlist reports that producer Bill Pohlad is set to direct, and the filmmakers are looking to get the project going soon, so expect official casting announcements sooner rather than later. Fassbender is currently filming X-Men: First Class with director Matthew Vaughn and will next be seen in Jane Eyre.

Michael Fassbender looking to star with Sean Penn in Genius

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

It looks like Michael Fassbender, still rolling in his INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS success, is taking his acting to the next level by starring in the drama GENIUS. The film already has Sean Penn attached to star as the great literary agent Max Perkins, who influenced and coached many of the 21st century’s greatest authors, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Wolfe. Presumably, Fassbender will play Thomas Wolfe, who fought constantly with Perkins over the length and content of his work. Bill Pohlad is set to direct the film, assuming everything is able to come together and get started. The film has tried before with Joaquin Phoenix and Lawrence Kasdan involved, but this time it seems like Penn is ready to make it, even though he technically hasn’t signed on the dotted line yet.

It seems there’s a lot of excitement revolving around this film given the big names attached, but I haven’t heard anything about it that gets me excited. Movies about authors are not typically interesting as watching someone type something or listening to them talk about their writing is not usually thrilling fodder. But maybe Pohlad has something for us and the script, written by GLADIATOR scribe John Logan has been popular for a while.

The Pairing of Penn and Fassbender May be a Stroke of ‘Genius’

Posted by Adam Lowes on January 10, 2011

Sean PennTwo of cinema’s biggest talents (one established, the other on his way to the top) could be teaming-up soon to go head-to-head in a period drama about a couple of figures from the literary world.

The Playlist are reporting that Sean Penn and Michael Fassbender are interesting in coming aboard Genius. Adapted from the award-winning non-fiction novel Max Perkins: Editor of Genius by Gladiator scribe John Logan, Penn is down for the role of the aforementioned editor who worked with such legendary US writers as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway during his long career.

If cast, Fassbender will play another equally celebrated novelist (Thomas Wolff), whom Perkins clashed with over numerous works.

Even if the subject matter seems a little dry and high-brow for some, surely the opportunity to see a twice Oscar-winning craftsman like Penn go up against a young, exciting talent like Fassbender would be worth the price of admission alone.

Michael Fassbender as Thomas Wolfe: A Genius Idea?

January 12, 2011

By Sarah Cahill

Irish actor Michael Fassbender, who is best known for spilling blood in “Inglourious Basterds” and “300,” may soon take on a different type of hard-hitting role. He is in talks to portray American author Thomas Wolfe in the upcoming film “Genius.” John Logan (“The Aviator”) wrote the screenplay, which is an adaptation of A. Scott Berg’s 1978 National Book Award-winning biography, Max Perkins: Editor of Genius. Max Perkins is one of the most famous literary editors of all time, who discovered and published such iconic American novelists as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Wolfe. The last time we heard casting news for “Genius” was over the summer, when Sean Penn was rumored to be in talks to play Perkins. Making the best casting choice for Perkins and Wolfe is critical, as the film revolves primarily around their tumultuous relationship. With the two main roles coming closer to being finalized, here’s our question for you: Which actors do you envision playing Hemingway and Fitzgerald?

Sean Penn Out, Colin Firth In For 'Genius' With Michael Fassbender
News
by Kevin Jagernauth
November 1, 2012 5:32 PM

Wait, Sean Penn out? When was he in? Michael Fassbender? If "Genius" seems to be coming completely out of the blue, don't feel too bad because the long-gestating project has been moving in fits and starts for a couple of years now, and the last news we had was way back in January 2011, when it looked like it was going to be a Fassy/Penn joint. Well, the bad news is that Penn is out, the good news is that Firth is in. As for whether or not this means it will actually get made, is up in the air.

But, for what it's worth, the film is an adaptation of the National Book Award-winning non-fiction work "Max Perkins: Editor of Genius" by A. Scott Berg, and focuses on Perkins' relationship with Thomas Wolfe (no, not the white suit guy, the genius author no one talks about anymore). Wolfe was a great writer, but a notoriously undisciplined one, and the two fought constantly — Perkins convinced the author to cut 90,000 words from his first novel, "Look Homeward, Angel," and battled for two years over the length of his second book "Of Time And The River." Wolfe eventually grew resentful of how much of his success was being attributed to Perkins (who also worked with folks like Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald) and left Scribner's. Wolfe would later die far too young at the age of the thirty-seven, but on his deathbed wrote a moving tribute to Perkins.

Fassbender will play the fiery, hard drinking, larger-than-life Wolfe, with Firth slotted in as Perkins. At one time, the project was being developed as a directorial vehicle for River Road honcho Bill Pohlad, but instead Michael Grandage will be making his debut. John Logan ("Skyfall," "Hugo") has penned the script that made the Black List in 2007.

Filming will kick off in early 2014 as financing, distribution rights and all that other fun stuff comes together.
