Upcoming Star To Watch: Gina Carano
July 26th, 2011 11:00am EDT

Fans of mixed martial arts and those who watched the return of American Gladiators know who Gina Carano is. She holds a 7-1 record in the ring and starred as "Crush" in the short-lived remake of the athletic game show. Now, she's ready to make an impact in Hollywood when she stars in Haywire.

Watch "Who Is Gina Carano?"

Gina Carano stars as a secret agent double-crossed - isn't that always the case? She needs to protect her family while dealing with her former partners. The movie has a grand ensemble cast: Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Bill Paxton, and Channing Tatum.

Gina was #16 on Maxim's Hot 100 in 2009 and featured on the cover on ESPN the Magazine's Body issue in the same year. We think Gina could make another splash with Haywire, which is due in theaters January 2011.

Haywire Gina Carano Empty Re: Haywire Gina Carano

http://dishmag.com/issue130/celebrity/14086/look-out-action-heroine-gina-carano-is-haywire/

Sigourney Weaver is usually credited with beginning the female action heroine movement. Her Alien character Ellen Ripley became an example that women could defeat the monster, and carry a big budget movie. You may also point to Pam Grier in Foxy Brown or the female fighters of kung fu cinema.

What followed were films like Thelma & Louise with a sort of Bonnie and Bonnie crime spree; Rene Russo in the Lethal Weapon sequels; TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Alias; and Uma Thurman killing Bill. Today, the most prolific action heroine is Angelina Jolie, with two Tomb Raiders, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Wanted and Salt.

Steven Soderbergh thought it wasn’t fair that Jolie had a monopoly on the heroine movies. He became enamored with the mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano and thought she could a make new movie star. Haywire stars Carano as a betrayed black ops soldier who gets revenge on the corrupt agents who set her up.

“Why is Angelina the only woman currently who’s allowed to run around with a gun and beat people up?” Soderbergh said to an audience at the AFI Film Festival, where the film premiered. “Somebody 20 years ago decided to put Steven Seagal in a movie. He’d never been in a movie and why don’t we [do the same?]”

Seagal famously became a leading man when agent Michael Ovitz saw him giving Aikido lessons. Carano had the moves, as displayed by her victories in the ring.
Gina jumps building
“I was watching these fights on CBS,” Soderbergh said. “CBS started broadcasting these MMA fights on the network because it was the new thing. They were coming on Saturday nights and Gina was on one of these. We were watching this fight and I just thought wow, somebody should really build a movie around this woman. She’s kind of amazing. She’s a natural beauty and she beats people to a pulp in a cage. So I thought of building a movie around her.”

Haywire became a familiar genre story. Like Salt uncovering Russian spies or Alias’s Sydney Bristow leading a double life, Mallory Kane (Carano) uses her training to clear her name.

“I’ve always liked the early Bond films, like the From Russia With Love era,” Soderbergh continued. “I saw Gina fight and I’d just been fired off a movie. It happens, it happens, and I thought here’s an opportunity to combine my interest in making a certain kind of spy film with an unusual and becoming new person. So I reached out to Gina’s people and went down to San Diego to talk to her. I said, ‘How would you feel about being in a movie?’”

The Academy Award winning director is known for working quickly. The same year he won the Best Director Oscar for Traffic, he had also released Erin Brockovich. His previous film, Contagion, came out in September and Haywire was ready to go shortly after.

“So when Gina said ‘yeah’, I called [screenwriter] Lem Dobbs who I’d worked with twice before on Kafka and The Limey. I said I want to build a movie around this woman and I have a couple ideas. We just sat down and within a month had sort of mapped out an outline of what it should be. It was a revenge movie. Basically, I said, she needs to beat her way through the cast, so we reverse engineered that. It all happened very, very quickly so that’s always a good sign.”

Carano herself also attended the AFI Film Festival with the film, but was very shy about speaking to the audience. She had no fear about crushing a man’s windpipe with her thighs, but she didn’t cling to the spotlight. Before she spoke, her co-stars sung her praises.

Ewan McGregor plays the film’s villain. When they faced off, Carano took care of her adversary.
Sexy fight in bedroom. Fight at the beach.
“My favorite bit was, there’s one little series of three punches, right, left, right,” McGregor said. “On the second right I had to punch right over Gina’s head. She didn’t duck quite as much and I didn’t stop it in time, and I punched her right in the head. She came straight up and she went, ‘Are you okay?’ She was right. I really f***ing hurt my hand.”

That fight was also shot in Soderbergh’s trademark relaxed, quick style. “The fights were all choreographed and done quickly, last minute,” McGregor said. “We shot our fight and Steven just wanted that evening light. So we shot ours over two evenings, like between 3:30 and 5:30. It was very cavalier I thought, for this huge long fight. They were like ‘oh, we’ll just do it a couple hours today and tomorrow.’ We had two hours, we did one long section of the fight and then he said, ‘Okay, move over there, the camera will be over there’ we did it again and just kept moving the cameras. Then the next day we came in and picked up on that and came in for close-ups and stuff. Then the end.”

Michael Fassbender has proven himself a tough guy in films like Centurion and X-Men: The Last Stand. He had no problems playing a role that demonstrated the strength of a woman. In fact, he joked about his support of powerful Gina Carano.

“One of the first things Steven said to me was, ‘How do you feel about getting your ass kicked by a woman?’” Fassbender said. “That was actually one of my fetishes. It’s nice to get the opportunity to play up a scene like that and do it blow for blow and be allowed to do it all. And we did do it all. It was just a lot of fun for two days. I think after the second day of shooting, I puked immediately when we got back to the hotel room. It was a lot of fun and I gotta say ‘hats off to Gina’”.

Channing Tatum could not appear at the film’s premiere, but Soderbergh related a story of his chivalrous modesty. In the film’s opening fight, Tatum kept pulling his punches. He must have learned never to strike a woman.

“In the first scene, [Carano was] ragging on Channing because he wouldn’t hit you,” Soderbergh reminded Carano. “You were like, ‘Dude…’ because Channing, let me tell you, Channing’s strong. Channing’s strong. He was really strong. You had to be like, ‘Come on, hit me’ and he wouldn’t hit you.”

Carano may be used to the winner’s circle, but the spotlight of a movie premiere made her shy. “It was kind of surreal,” Carano reflected about her movie. “All of this is surreal right now. Steven was one of the most beautiful people and gentle people that actually spent time with me, and [so were] all the actors. I felt more vulnerable than I ever have. I loved the fights. The fight days were where I could actually feel like myself. Other than that, I was nervous.”

The filmmakers went to great lengths to make sure Carano was comfortable and that the film reflected her skills appropriately. Soderbergh would reshoot fight sequences, including the final battle with McGregor, even if that inconvenienced the actors.

“We did a couple of rounds of reshoots,” Soderbergh said. “The third round, I called Ewan and I said, ‘I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is you’re going to get to fight Gina.’ And he’s like, ‘Oh yeah!’ He wanted to fight her. But I said, ‘The bad news is you’ve gotta get your hair cut, again.’”

McGregor explained why he chose a hair style that was so difficult to recreate during reshoots. “Yeah, my hair kept growing back and now I kind of like it,” McGregor said. “They left me no choice. The hair was based on somebody, it doesn’t matter who it is, but he runs a private army too. He’s got hair just like that so we chose that look. It’s a terrible haircut but it’s apparently [accurate.]”

Mallory Kane isn’t just a dynamo with her fists. She’s also deadly behind the wheel. One of the film’s exciting car chases gave Soderbergh some trouble. No animals were harmed making the picture, so filming a collision with a deer proved difficult.

“That was movie magic, but I will say that they don’t listen,” Soderbergh said. “The cue, we’re backing the car, is the cue for the deer to run into the car. It won’t listen. It’s just unnatural. His head is too thick. He had to do it a lot. They’re kinda slow but then as I said to the deer, ‘We only need it right once.’”

Haywire is likely to be a big hit and audiences will demand to see Carano on screen again, whether it’s Haywire 2 or a brand new character. For her those acrobatic kicks and flips are nothing special, just part of her training.

“I’m quite normal,” Carano said. "I’m normal.”

Look for Haywire in theatres everywhere beginning January 20, 2012!

Fight Like A Girl
Gina Carano's journey from martial arts champ to movie star.
By Fan Zhong
February 2012

It was the summer of 2009, and Gina Carano neither looked nor felt much like an action star. Though she’d been the face of women’s mixed martial arts for several years, the fighter had just suffered her first professional defeat—to an opponent named Cyborg. The native Texan had a black eye and little sense of direction: “I thought, What am I doing with my life?” recalls Carano, 29. Then, as if on cue, Steven Soderbergh called. The director, who has a history of unconventional casting (porn star Sasha Grey played the lead in his 2009 The Girlfriend Experience), was struck by Carano’s looks and lethality when he caught a match of hers on TV. Though she didn’t recognize Soderbergh’s name, Carano was a big fan of Erin Brockovich and Traffic, and she soon found herself training for his latest movie, Haywire, out January 20. In this international thriller, Carano plays an ass-kicking operative seeking vengeance on a league of men—including Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, and Michael Douglas—trying to take her down. With such a veteran cast, Carano got a serious acting lesson, but in the action is where Carano earns her leading-lady status: “Steven wanted the fights to look real,” she says. “When I throw a punch, I mean it.”
