If You Like Movie Trailers… February 11, 2011

I’ve seen a lot of movies lately. As a result, I’ve watched more movie trailers the past few months than anyone really should. It’s hard to believe that the trailer represented the main source of information about a movie months before its theatrical release. Of course, we now live in an age where information about a movie is reported years before a theatrical release. That being said, i really like watching trailers because of a certain nostalgic value. Better yet, trailers are now released on the online.

In any event, the topic of movie trailers popped into my head for two reasons. First, the trailer for this summer’s X-Men: First Class was released online. Second, the only commercials I liked during the SUper Bowl were for movies coming out later this year. In order to kill some time, I’m going to share my thoughts for various trailers I’ve seen recently. Here’s a list of trailers I’ve seen recently in roughly reverse chronological order. This is certainly NOT a list of rankings. I’m not sure if these trailers provide promise for the flicks coming out in 2011, but they should be fun to watch.

(1) X-Men: First Class – As I mentioned earlier, this trailer came out yesterday. I’ve been following this project ever since it was revealed the story would be a prequel set in the 1960s. Unfortunately, a lot of the news since then hasn’t been promising. There have been concerns that the flick has been made on the cheap, resulting in an overly cheesy style. Photos like this don’t help.

However, there are some rays of hope. This movie is supposed to have a harder edge reminiscent of Casino Royale than the previous X-Men installments. The director, Matthew Vaughn, is capable of making grittier than we’ve seen before because of what he showed in Layer Cake. That movie, which features a pre-James Bond Daniel Craig, is a very good gangster movie. On a side note, it was the first English-lanugage movie I saw that genuinely required subtitles to be understood. Additionally, the cast has some decent actors. The leads of Professor X and Magneto are being played by James McAvoy (Atonement) and Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds). The cast also includes Rose Byrne (Damages), Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), and the ubiquitous Kevin Bacon.

As for the trailer, it’s actually decent. All my concerns haven’t been addressed, but my attention has been refocused. Check it out.

X-Men First Class

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner! Ever since they announced that James McAvoy was going to play the role of the young Prof. Charles X. Xavier while Michael Fassbender will play the young Magneto in the new X-men movie, for once I became excited again and hopeful with the X-Men movie franchise.

I hope that the plot will do justice to the acting skills of these two actors who I consider to be very gifted. James McAvoy I first saw in Band of Brothers but was impressed by his talent in the Children of Dune tv series. Michael Fassbender is of course famous from the 300 movie, having played Stelios. Aside from that I also liked his portrayal of Lt. Archie Hicox in Inglourious Basterds.

X-Men First Class will be the fourth installment of the X-Men franchise of movies. This time it will focus on the origins of Professor X and Magneto, close friends who often times found themselves on opposite poles. Movie is scheduled to come out on June 3 of this year.

I wasn’t really impressed with the X-Men string of movies, save for the second one (X2).

first trailer for 'x-men: first class'
written by Emily Estep at 2:46 PM

X-Men: First Class has a trailer now, and it basically looks like an updated version of the old X-Men movies plus James MacAvoy and Michael Fassbender. (Who are considerable plusses.) The film is about the beginnings of the X-Men, mostly concerning Professor X (MacAvoy) and Magneto (Fassbender) according to this trailer. The film also “reveals a secret history of famous global events.” Not sure what that means, but other famous names in the cast include Kevin Bacon and January Jones of Mad Men.

Director Matthew Vaughn is at a career high right now, passing up his 2007 release Stardust with Kick-Ass last year. Following Kick-Ass up with an X-Men movie is brilliant for Vaughn, because even the worst X-Men movies do incredibly well in the box office (i. e. X-Men Origins: Wolverine), and Kick-Ass underperformed. Hopefully the talents of its stars and its director will elevate X-Men: First Class above the previous films.

“X-Men: First Class” Teaser Evaluation
February 11, 2011

Thus, we come to my piece de resistance for my slew of trailer evaluations today; The teaser for the much-anticipated X-Men: First Class. This movie rounded out my top ten most anticipated movies of 2011, clocking in at the number 10 spot, and I seriously had my fingers crossed that this would redeem one of my all-time favourite superhero film franchises, considering that the last two offerings were a bit… lacklustre. They weren’t terrible movies, but they were lacklustre, and definitely didn’t live up to the awesome first two X-Men films. So, the million dollar question? Does X-Men: First Class look to be a step in the right direction, even with a new cast and a new setting?

Yes, it would certainly look that way. I’m a bit nervous that this may be yet another disappointment, which would make the disappointing X-Men films outweigh the great ones, but the original teaser looks quite promising, and gets me genuinely excited for the movie. I was curious to see the direction that the crew was going in here, since even reading about it didn’t really give me a clear picture, but now that the veil has been drawn back a bit, I’m legitimately intrigued and excited, especially with Matthew Vaughn at the helm, director of one of my all-time favourite superhero movies, Kick-Ass.

So, what’s the deal with this new X-Men film according to the teaser? Well, it’s a prequel to the main X-Men film trilogy, but is independent of the Wolverine spin-off and its upcoming sequel. In fact, it feels like First Class is acknowledging the main trilogy of movies (even though it precedes them by around fifty years canonically), but is pretending that X-Men Origins: Wolverine never happened. I guess Fox is trying to split off the X-Men films from the Wolverine stories now. Fair enough. I have to say though. Moira MacTaggert looks pretty damn good after fifty to sixty years in X-Men: The Last Stand (she’s portrayed here by the sexy AND hilarious Rose Byrne). Maybe she’s an ageless mutant in the movies. Mystique is ageless in the comics, and that agelessness is finally acknowledged in First Class, which also may explain how she became Magneto’s number two, since Professor X and Magneto (who are simply ‘Charles’ and ‘Erik’ for now) are currently friends and allies.

Anyhow, the teaser, surprisingly, doesn’t even acknowledge the presence of the movie’s villains, The Hellfire Club, which I thought was a tad disappointing. I was looking forward to seeing some teases of Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw. Even so, we get teases of some of the other mutants’ powers, including some solid-looking action sequences. Mostly though, the teaser exists to establish the movie’s setting, during the 1960′s amidst the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis (which looks like it will play heavily into the movie’s storyline), and the promise that the ultimate falling out between Professor X and Magneto will be explored. This is displayed especially prominently in the teaser’s final scene, where Charles says to Erik, “Listen carefully, my friend. Killing will not bring you peace…”, to which, Erik responds, “Peace was never an option…”. This is followed by Erik displaying his powers through the manipulation of a battleship fleet. Oh snap. At the very least, it looks like the script has turned out well.

That’s something that I must say, I’m pleasantly surprised at. Despite First Class’s tight production period, it seems to be shaping up nicely, and at the very least, it will improve upon the last two X-Men films. I like the idea of a prequel story set amdist the Cuban Missile Crisis, and I have to say that James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender appear to be playing the all-important roles of Charles and Erik very, very well. I didn’t get much of a chance to see how the new mutant cast will stack up to the more established mutant cast that was featured in the main X-Men film trilogy, but I’m going to be optimistic about them, because at least the movie’s action sequences look good.

I don’t have a lot to go on beyond a setting and some promises of solid action and good dialogue, as teasers often go, but I will say that I approve of X-Men: First Class’s initial footage. Much of my nervousness has been allayed with this promising teaser, though some remains, since the previous two movies ultimately ended up being let-downs. I’m sure that the eventual full trailer and final product will help to purge even more of them though. I’m really pulling for this movie, and I’m happy to see that it looks to be turning out well.

If you have yet to see the teaser, I’ve enclosed it below. Think positive, X-fans. It looks like this movie series could be back on the right track.

X-Men: First Class: Many of the trailers released for upcoming comic-based action movies haven’t shown much promise (Thor comes to mind), but the X-Men series and their offshoots have had a 75% success rate. It looks like they’ll bump that up to 80% with the 5th in the franchise, X-Men: First Class, the prequel of prequels, which will star James McAvoy as a pre-disabled Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto). Also cast in the film are January Jones (WHITE WITCH, anybody!?!) and best actress nominee Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique)

X-Men: First Class (June 3)
Director: Matthew Vaughn
Starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, January Jones, Kevin Bacon

Up until I saw the trailer, I was not at all looking forward to this. It’s strange how much two minutes of footage can change your mind about a film. We all know how Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr were once close friends before the days of the X-Men. This film, taking place in the 1960s, follows the two friends and the events that lead to the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood, and the X-Men. After the horrendous third X-Men film and the even worse Wolverine film, I had a hard time thinking they could right the ship. Matthew Vaughn is a talented director and from the looks of the trailer, it feels a lot more like the first two X-Men films, which are among my favorite comic book films.

'X-Men: First Class' Trailer Blows Us Out Of The Water (Video)

The first extended trailer for Matthew Vaughn‘s 'X-Men: First Class' has been released.

The prequel film, set in the 1960s, charts the beginning of the X-Men saga with a secret history of famous global events. It surmises that before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time.

It pits the two not as archenemies, but the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.

After seeing the trailer, this film has quickly moved to the top of our summer viewing list alongside comic superhero flick Captain America.

'X-Men: First Class', starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Oliver Platt, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Michael Fassbender and Kevin Bacon, has a official release date of June 3, 2011.

A Few Trailers Possibly Worth Considering
The trailers for X-Men: First Class and Arthur both dropped yesterday and they've both got me somewhat interested although skeptical. They both have a wealth of acting talent in them, but X-Men doesn't guarantee it won't just be another X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Arthur's use of both "Rebel, Rebel" and "Under Pressure" in its trailer doesn't inspire a ton of confidence as much as I love David Bowie.

What I do think is worthy of optimism is the focus of X-Men on the relationship between Professor X and Magneto (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender).

The things that give me some unexpected optimism about Arthur are Helen Mirren's role as a nurse. She and Russell Brand seem to have good chemistry based on the trailer. And Greta Gerwig, who I've made it clear I really liked in last year's Greenberg plays a significant role. As does Jennifer Garner as the girl that no one likes, which is a first for her. The thing that really put me over the top interest-wise, though, was the involvement of Luis Guzman in a fairly prominent way. I can't get enough of the guy.

I should be posting my Mamotys (Most Anticipated Movies Of The Year) for 2011 in the next few days.

First thoughts on ‘X-Men: First Class’

Posted by ptb

I’ve been very quiet about the upcoming X-Men: First Class film, but the last few weeks have brought such a flurry of activity I think it’s time to weigh in. The official trailer for the movie hit yesterday on the “X-Men Movies” Facebook page, and multiple sets of photos (some legitimate, some not, and some selected by director Matthew Vaughn himself) were released in the weeks prior. If you visit this site at all regularly, you’ve seen that I’m a huge fan of all things X-Men. I focus primarily on the source material in the monthly comics, but over the years I’ve enjoyed the cartoons and films that have been part of the franchise over the years. I’m very forgiving of the changes to characters and continuity, so long as they serve to make a better story. Unfortunately, the films have declined with each iteration, and like many I’m hoping for First Class to change that trend.

Much of the decline begins and hopefully ends with Bryan Singer. Singer’s decision to work on Superman Returns between X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand led to Fox hastily trying to get the third movie out on their timetable without him (which I think specifically included beating Singer’s Superman Returns to theaters). The loss of Singer also led to James Marsden’s exit from the X-Men as Cyclops (which was a major blow to the Dark Phoenix ending of the movie) as the director took him along for Superman. The Brett Ratner directed X-Men: The Last Stand is largely considered a major step down for the franchise with X-Men Origins: Wolverine possibly falling even further. Just so my position is clear, here are some quick thoughts on what we’ve seen so far:

* X-Men (2000) did a fine job with introducing the characters, the threat and bringing both of them to life. There are only two things I didn’t like about this first installment: it was perhaps too short (clocking in at about 90 minutes) and the line Halle Barry delivers after hitting Toad with some lighting (it was just awful in every way from conception to delivery). This, along with Blade, was an incredible first step by Marvel and I was thrilled to see my heroes in the spotlight.
* X2 (2003) improved on the original in many ways with a bigger budget and broader scope. It focuses a bit too much on Wolverine’s past, but that’s just me not wanting the X-universe to revolve around one character (or at least that character). The opening scene in the museum and attack on the mansion were exactly how I wanted the X-Men to appear on screen. At the same time, a story was carefully being built around Jean Grey to bring the Dark Phoenix Saga (easily one of the most popular stories in the X-Men comics) to the screen and I couldn’t have been happier with this one.
* X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), like so many films to come third in series, is where things really fell apart. The switch from director Bryan Singer to Brett Ratner shifted the tone to more spectacle than substance and the inclusion of too many mutants hurt this movie beyond belief. There are some good things there though. The decision to include characters and a plot introduced in Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men comics kept things fresh and the last time we see Professor Xavier on screen is pretty incredible. Unfortunately, too many negatives to cover here surround these positives. The worst for me has to be the elimination of Cyclops in the first 15 minutes of the film. His absence in the final scene was a true failing of this film to properly conclude the story we’d been seeing build from the first movie. It also put the spotlight on Wolverine and the less I see of that the better.
* X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) is difficult to be objective about since I don’t think the X-Men begin and end with the title character. I don’t think my biases translate to this being a good movie though. For every good choice that was made, four bad ones arose. Wolverine’s team of agents were each given some moments to shine, but something just seemed off. The choices that were made regarding Deadpool were just awful and shortsighted if the intention is spin him off into his own film. There was just too much awkward posing and I remember some of it being met with laughter in the theater. For all its faults, it still may have been better than The Last Stand.

The heroes of X-Men: First Class (left to right): Banshee, Magneto, Mystique, Moira MacTaggart, Beast, Charles Xavier and Havok.

The studio made poor decisions with a hot commodity at the time of The Last Stand and Origins: Wolverine was their attempt to recover from that. In fact, Origins: Wolverine was even a part of the plan back at the release of The Last Stand along with films for an X-Men Origins: Magento and early talk about First Class. Some argue that he leak of a test print of Origins: Wolverine was a heavy blow to the film’s reputation before its release in theaters, but the reaction to The Last Stand was far more damaging in my opinion. The problem is not that the films are bad because they’re different from the comics or even one another. It’s because they’re just bad movies in and of themselves. Both The Last Stand and Origins: Wolverine feature huge casts that are never fully developed. The issue for me isn’t even that they appear on screen (that was done well in the first and second films), it’s that they’re given just enough screen time to make you wonder about who they are knowing that you’re never going to see them in that form again. Yes, you can always go to the comics to learn more, but it’s not good form for a movie to send you elsewhere to figure out what’s going on.

All of that being said, these movies made a lot of money and all the criticism has not affected the decision to create X-Men: First Class in addition to a second Wolverine movie already in the works. The trailer for First Class looks very promising even if the production photos may not have been. The odd trend I’m seeing from the First Class trailer is that these prequel movies seem to be tying X-Men history to events in real world history. Origins: Wolverine chalked the Three Mile Island nuclear meltdown of the 1970′s to a pitched mutant battle in south central Pennsylvania. First Class follows suit by alluding to the Cuban Missile Crisis involving mutants. This isn’t necessarily bad. The first X-Men film acknowledged Magneto’s experience in a Nazi concentration camp very effectively, but the direct tie to more acute incidents in human history seems a little odd and I’d hate to see it crowbarred into every film.

I know I’ll see this movie during its opening weekend. The return of Bryan Singer to the X-Men film franchise has to be considered a positive, and the movie features Beast and Havok, two of my all-time favorite X-Men. I do not like that Havok’s plasma blasts are red, but that’s an easy way to connect him visually to Cyclops. That’s a nitpick though. The trailer did a lot to tip the balance of this movie having the potential to be good. I can’t wait to see more.

X-Men: First Class opens June 3rd, 2011 and stars James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr, January Jones as Emma Frost, and Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw.

Trailer for 'X-Men: First Class' now online
Posted by AuthorFranck Tabouring | DateFriday, February 11, 2011 at 10:06AM

The teaser trailer for Matthew Vaughn's upcoming "X-Men" prequel "X-Men: First Class" is now online, and you can admire it right after the jump. It's a short teaser only, but I admit it looks pretty good. I expected to see a bit more action, but this definitely gives us a good first look at the characters and look of the flick.

"First Class," which opens June 3, 2011, focuses on what was going on with Professor X and Magneto when they were close friends. Michael Fassbender plays Magneto, and James McAvoy is X. Also starring are January Jones, Jennifer Lawrence and Rose Byrne. With Vaughn behind the camera, I'm sure this one will deliver.

Wings, Magnetism & Diamonds: The New X-Men Trailer Has Dropped!

February 11th, 2011

Think Katy Perry’s Firework, Pink’s Raise Your Glass, and Ke$ha’s We R Who We R cornered the market on being yourself and fighting back against haters? Then you haven’t heard of the X-Men! After five long years we’re being treated to a brand-new X-Men film hitting theatres June 3, 2011.

In case you know nothing about comics or superheroes or mutants (OMG – I’m actually dying a little inside!) the X-Men have long stood out as minorities fighting for the right to be who they are. When they were first published in the 60s they were a beacon for ethnicities, women, gays and pretty much anyone who felt left-out or shut-out because of who they were.

20th Century Fox decided to revisit that era and placed the setting of X-Men First Class back to the time when the world discovered mutants for the first time and how those mutants reacted themselves to their powers.

The film stars James McAvoy (Wanted) as Professor X, Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) as Magneto, Kevin Bacon (Frost/Nixon) as Sebastian Shaw and January Jones (TV’s Mad Men) as Emma Frost.

Check it out below and let us know what you think!

X-Men: First Class

Superhero Franchise gets a Re-Boot

The X-Men have long been one of my favourite superhero franchises, and I loved the comics and cartoon when younger, and also the first three movies and Wolverine. This year, 20th Century Fox has decided to re-boot the series, starting at the very beginning.

X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events.

The cast is pretty impressive: James McAvoy as Charles “Prof. X” Xavier; Michael Fassbender as Erik “Magneto” Lehnsherr; Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw (the villain); January Jones as Emma Frost; Jennifer Lawrence as Raven “Mystique” Darkholme; Nicholas Hoult as Hank “Beast” McCoy, to name but a few. The movie also features Oliver Platt, Ray Wise, Jason Flemyng and Rose Byrne.

“Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.” (IMDb)

Here’s the trailer:

I think this looks pretty awesome, and I hope the movie lives up to expectations. X-Men: First Class is directed by Matthew Vaughn (Stardust, Kick-Ass).

In related movie news, a sequel to Clash of the Titans has been green-lit: Wrath of the Titans. I’m not sure I approve of this…

X-Men First Class

X-Men: First Class. Left to right, we see: Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, January Jones as Emma Frost, Jason Flemyng as Azazel, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Lucas Till as Havoc, Zoe Kravitz as Angel Salvadore, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, and James McAvoy as Charles Xavier.

I'm a huge Marvel fan, and I practically own all the X-Men DVDs. This is pretty much how nerdy I get, but I can't wait to see Zoe Kravitz actually act in this one! It looks good too, check out the trailer here.

X-Men: First Class Trailer
Posted by Andrew on Feb 11, 2011

As most of you know by now, the much anticipated film trailer for “X-Men: First Class” premiered yesterday. The trailer boasts a brand new cast of superpower mutants: Michael Fassbender as “Magneto”, James McAvoy as “Professor Xavier”, January Jones as “Emma Frost”, and Rose Byrne as “Moira Mactaggert” to lead the cast. It’s refreshing to see the franchise heading into a different direction after the abysmal “Last Stand” and if all goes well, “First Class” should warrant its own trilogy (Fox, if you’re reading this stay the hell away from the Origins concept). With these changes though, it looks like iconic characters Wolverine and Cyclops wont make it into this film adaptation seeing as it “First Class” acts as a predecessor to the prior films before it.

In what looks to be a lackluster movie season, the X-Men have our full and undivided attention.

'X-Men: First Class' Trailer Debuts Today!
By: Erik Davis on February 10, 2011 at 5:09PM Comments (49)

X-Men: First ClassIt was the trailer you wanted to see the most during the Super Bowl, and now it’s finally here. X-Men: First Class is the latest film in the popular X-Men movie franchise and the first since X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It's another ensemble piece like all the X-Men films, but this one is a prequel that takes a look at how the characters Professor X and Magneto originally came to be, as friends first and then foes.
The film stars James McAvoy (as Professor Charles Xavier), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Rose Byrne, January Jones, Oliver Platt, Kevin Bacon and more in what's sure to be one of summer's biggest blockbusters. You'll recognize some of these mutants from previous installments (like Mystique), and you'll learn more about mutants like Beast, Havoc and Emma Frost.
The first trailer definitely has an X-Men feel to it, and I especially like the fact that it's set against the Cuban Missile Crisis in the early '60s. The mutants look sharp, though we only really get fast flashes of them since they don't want to reveal too much just yet. McAvoy and Fassbender are both very strong lead actors and perfect for these roles – I can see how they'll be the ones really drawing us into this story.
Directed by Matthew Vaughn (who delivered a wickedly wild ride in Kick-Ass), X-Men: First Class hits theaters on June 3rd.
Let us know what you think when you watch the trailer below. Does this look like the sort of X-Men movie you can get behind and root for? How high has this trailer helped raised First Class on your summer movie anticipation meters?

X-Men: First Class Teaser Trailer

Of all the Marvel movies coming out this summer, Sony’s X-Men: First Class was the one The Blot was looking forward to the least. That all changed yesterday with the release of the film’s first teaser trailer! It is great in so many ways, but most of all it reminded me why I loved the X-Men movies so much. While Captain America and Thor are getting most of the hype because it’s the first time those two characters have been brought to life on the silver screen, it is the X-Men franchise that set the standard (along with the Batman franchise) of how to make a great comic book adaptation.

Truth be told, I’ve been pretty down X-Men: First Class, especially after seeing all those average still photos that leaked last month. But after seeing the trailer above my opinions have changed. It’s amazing what one good trailer can do to turn a film’s fortunes around. First Class went from being this summer’s forgotten Marvel film to the front of many fan’s "Must See" list. I’m not going to say it’ll be better than Thor or Captain America (ok just Thor, we all know Cap is going to suck), but I’m starting to think it’s got a shot!

X-Men: First Class is scheduled to premiere in theaters on June 3, 2011. The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn and stars James McAvoy as Professor Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, January Jones as Emma Frost, Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw and Rose Byrne as Dr. Moira MacTaggert.

Movie Trailer for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

Published on: 11th February, 2011

Here it is, gang! The first great-looking movie trailer for Matthew Vaughn‘s X-Men: First Class! We’ve been waiting to see this for a long time, just so we can get a taste of what Vaughn has created. I don’t know about you, but I’m 100% sold on its awesomeness!

Official Plot Synopsis:

X-MEN FIRST CLASS charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.

The films stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon.

Watch the trailer below and tell us what you think!

It’s called X-Men: First Class and its directed by Matthew Vaugn, who did the quite awesome Kick Ass (2010)

The trailer looks pretty cool, and anyway, how can I say no to James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender? At any rate it can’t be nearly as bad as the absolute shite that was X-Men: The Last Stand

X-Men: First Class trailer actually looks quite promising

The new X-Men First Class movie due to hit cinemas on June the 3rd actually looks very promising, the trailer takes you back to the dawn of the time when Charles Xavier / Professor X played by James McAvoy and Magneto / Erik Lehnsherr played by Michael Fassbender were first discovering their unique powers. Check out the trailer below…

Trailer Talk: ‘X-Men: First Class’

– by SHERICE ANTOINETTE –

Finally, here’s a look at “X-Men: First Class.”

From what is shown, Michael Fassbender (pictured at right) appears to be an excellent Magneto. As a fan of previous work, I had a feeling he would be. James McAvoy, whom I’ve grown fond of since “The Last King of Scotland” isn’t exactly wowing me with his portrayal of Xavier. However, as a whole, “X-Men: First Class” is looking pretty impressive and better than I thought it would.

Focusing on the character introductions, we see Emma Frost (January Jones) in what appears to be an interrogation room. Angel (Zoe Kravitz) flutters her wings. Hank McCoy/Beast (Nicolas Hoult) sits with a syringe in hand. Havoc (Lucas Till) and Darwin (Edi Gathegi are in the next few frames. Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) close out the remaining “First Class” cast.

I have to say, 20th Century Fox included just enough action sequences to combat any negative buzz and pique my waning interest. I’ll definitely watch “X-Men: First Class” in a theater come June 3.

Sound off to the right with your opinion. What do you think of the trailer?

X-Men: First Class Debut Trailer

– February 11, 2011Posted in: Movies, Trailers

The very first X-Men: First Class trailer has arrived. Follow the formative years of the X-Men and the relationship between Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr, a.k.a. Magneto. Directed by Matthew Vaughn, “X-Men: First Class” stars Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne January Jones, Jason Flemyng, Nicholas Hoult, Lucas Till, Zoe Kravitz, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and more! The movie will hit the theaters in June 3.

Witnessing the beginning is cool and all, but I`d much rather witness the ending a.k.a X-Men 4, that won`t stop me from checking this movie out on a warm and breezy summer day, though.

Films: X-Men: First Class trailer debuts!

…and after a slight timing debacle FOX debuted the teaser trailer for the forthcoming prequel X-MEN: FIRST CLASS.

I was in the camp of “bothered and unimpressed” with that seemingly photoshopped, crappy first image that came out online (and then promptly disowned by FOX and Matthew Vaughn who was understandably pissed about it existing)…then Vaughn, in a show of good faith released a few solid photo’s that looked better, not to mention the teaser poster, which I also liked.

Still, I was on the fence about this whole thing. I have faith in Vaughn simply because I enjoyed STARDUST and LAYER CAKE so much, but I was concerned…

…until now. Here we have the teaser trailer and it really does put other comic movie trailers into contrast. THOR looks good (but does it look this good?), CAPTAIN AMERICA looks cool (but will it be too goofy?), GREEN LANTERN looks like it could very well flop (upon rumination and repeated watching’s of its trailer). This X-MEN trailer actually puts a lot that has come before it to shame.

Things I like:

-The yellow and blue outfits! FINALLY!!! Good riddance to stupid, lame-ass black leather (with stupid thin coloured piping), biker gang X-men. You have no idea how long I have waited for this.

-Erik and Charles look great and I really like both Michael Fassbender and James Macavoy.

-Really early, before its time SR-71 Blackbird. Excellent.

-Cuban Missle Crisis and Kennedy-era as a backdrop? Also excellent.

-Emma Frost’s diamond form looks WAY better than the one used on her in the Wolverine flick. (I know she’s not supposed to have it, but whatever, it looks cool)

-I am SO glad they kept and are using the same style of BAMF special effect for Nightcrawler’s daddy Azazel. Looks hype!

-Glad Mystique is in it (and her special effect matches too), and hope that her inevitable relationship with Azazel develops giving credence to said future Nightcrawler character.

-Beast looks 100% better than the crappy Kelsey Grammar/Brett Ratner-fied Beast from the 3rd X-flick. He looks badass!

-We finally get to see a film with Moira Taggart interacting with Charles Xavier. Me likey.

-I think the overall tension the trailer presents is palpable and makes this look like a tight flick with not extraneous crap.
Didn’t like: Um…Havoc…AKA Alex Summers…AKA Scott Summers/Cyclops YOUNGER brother is in this…in the 60’s as a teen? WTF? The timeline in my head is confused.

So, I said some bad things initially, but sufficed to say my worries are less now. In fact I’d plunk this in right underneath THOR as my second most anticipated superhero film of the coming summer season.

X-Men: First Class - Official Trailer

Before Professor X was bald and in a wheel chair, before Magneto was an old man and before the Phoenix and Wolverine had their Aztec warrior moment there was The X-men first class. Check out the official trailer to "X-men: first class" directed by Mathew Vaughn. I always liked the X-men franchise and the story that pre-dates those is this prequel. I don't know how to feel about this just yet but i'm ready to give it a whirl.

The film is due to be released on June 3rd and star James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, Jason Flemyng, Caleb Landry Jones, Edi Gathegi, Rose Byrne, Lucas Till, Kevin Bacon and Oliver Plat.

First Trailer for ‘X-Men: First Class’
by Mark Humphreys on Feb 11, 2011

Michael Fassbender in 'X-Men First Class'
As most X-Men fans are probably already aware, the first trailer for the upcoming X-Men prequel film, X-men: First Class, has just been released. What is purported to be the first in a new trilogy of X-Men films, First Class is scheduled for theatrical release on June 3rd, 2011. The plot description reads as follows:

“Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-MEN.”
The film is set in the 1960s, during the time of President Kennedy, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Civil Rights Movement. The 'X-Men' saving the world from Communist Russia: works for me! The villains of First Class are called the 'Hellfire Club' - a club whose primary objective is to influence international events, so as to fit their own evil schemes.

Some of the main cast members include: James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto, Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, January Jones as Emma Frost/White Queen, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert (Xavier’s love interest), Nicholas Hoult as Dr. Henry “Hank” McCoy/Beast, and Jennifer Lawrence (this year’s Oscar nominee for Winter’s Bone) as Raven Darkholme/Mystique.

Who knows whether or not First Class will do justice to the original three X-Men movies, but with lines of dialogue like “listen to me very carefully, my friend: killing will not bring you peace…”, followed by “peace was never an option”, things certainly look promising.

X-MEN FIRST CLASS trailer breakdown
The first official look at the new installment in the X-Men franchise has just been released.
Check it out and read my breakdown of what it reveals, next...

This new reboot of the X-Men franchise is very much linked in with the original trilogy. The first images we see are of Professor X's vacant wheelchair, followed by Magneto's unused helmet; remnants of the first three X-Men films. These images are swiftly followed by our introduction to James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender in the roles originated by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.

If the sight of the youthful Professor X and Magneto wasn't enough, the trailer uses a television broadcast from JFK to reveal its time setting. We're in the early 60's during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The world is at war with itself, and the mutants face multiple dangers.
The next images show us brief introductions to the young mutants that comprise the first intake at Xavier's academy; some familiar, some new. Not all of them display their powers, but it's worth noting that the transformation of young Mystique (Winter's Bone's Jennifer Lawrence) is identical to how it was in the first series of films.

The next reassuringly familiar image is of the X-Men jet, the Blackbird, albeit in an unpolished form. This also introduces us to what resembles the classic yellow X-Men costuming, and the promise of a Charles Xavier/Erik Lehnsher action sequence.
In a confusing piece of trailer cutting, the Blackbird was being piloted by Beast, before his introduction proper. It's in the next sequence where the young Hank McCoy is revealed (played by Nicholas Hoult), undergoing some changes.

As the trailer approaches the end, it's an amalgam of shots that offer brief shots of the other main characters, including the first appearance of Kevin Bacon's villain, January Jones' diamond clad Emma Frost, Hank McCoy displaying his acrobatic skills and Mystique looking pretty. We also get a brief look at an early version of Professor X's Cerebro computer.

To end the trailer we get a closer look at Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy's conflicting characters, arguing their separate ideologies that will one day end their friendship. The showstopper is the shot of Erik showing his full potential, lifting a submarine straight out of the ocean.

It's a great first look at the reboot of the X-Men franchise, and despite some reservations as to how the 'retro' feel would affect the film it looks like an interesting addition to the universe. X-Men: First Class is clearly influenced by the three films that already exist in the franchise (discounting the Wolverine spin-off), and I look forward to seeing how the characters evolve into the ones we know.

X-Men: First Class hits our screens on June 3rd.
