First-Look Photos Of Nicole Beharie & Michael Fassbender On “Shame” Set
By Tambay, on March 2nd, 2011

Confirmed!

Recall my last post about a week ago, speculating on whether Nicole Beharie was indeed co-starring opposite Michael Fassbender in Brit director Steve McQueen’s next project, titled, Shame…

Nicole was quoted in a December interview, stating, “I actually have a job coming up in February with an interesting director, Steve McQueen, that we’re shooting in the city. I can’t talk about it until it’s official.”

Well, there never was a follow-up announcement on whether she officially was cast in the role. I hadn’t read any reports since then that affirm that. So, I emailed the production company behind the film for answers. Their reply was vague. They wouldn’t confirm whether or not Beharie is indeed the film, but did say, “The shoot is well underway and casting complete.”

Ok. I’m not sure why they were being so secretive. If casting is complete, and shooting is underway, then it all should be public record.

But, regardless, as I was hoping would happen, on-set photos from the film have surfaced and, as you can tell from the images, Ms Beharie clearly is in the film.

To rehash… in the film, Fassbender plays a fellow by the name of Brandon, described as a 30-something man living in New York, whose addiction to pornography threatens to destroy his romantic life. He meets an “extremely beautiful,” “very confident,” black woman, with an “unwitting sexuality,” who is “clearly attracted to Brandon.” Needless to say, the black woman is played by Nicole Beharie. The pair apparently date, and eventually develop a relationship, although she is unaware of his inability to connect with a woman on more than a superficial level, thanks to his porn addiction! Drama naturally ensues.

The film should be out later this year, although no specific date has been announced.

Check out the rest of the pics below (click to enlarge). Thanks to reader VFLA for alerting me via Twitter!

Photos of Nicole Beharie and Michael Fassbender on the Set of SHAME
by Brendan Bettinger Posted:March 3rd, 2011 at 10:41 pm

Today brings our first look at Shame, the latest collaboration between Hunger star Michael Fassbender and writer/director Steve McQueen. Fassbender plays a New Yorker unable to manage his sex life: “After his wayward younger sister moves into his apartment, Brandon’s world spirals out of control.” Carey Mulligan (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), James Badge Dale (Rubicon), and Nicole Beharie (The Express) also star.

Check out photos of Fassbender and Beharie on location after the jump.

Here’s how Shadow And Act sets up the relationship between the two characters:

“Fassbender plays a fellow by the name of Brandon, described as a 30-something man living in New York, whose addiction to pornography threatens to destroy his romantic life. He meets an ‘extremely beautiful,’ ‘very confident,’ black woman, with an ‘unwitting sexuality,’ who is ‘clearly attracted to Brandon.’ Needless to say, the black woman is played by Nicole Beharie. The pair apparently date, and eventually develop a relationship, although she is unaware of his inability to connect with a woman on more than a superficial level, thanks to his porn addiction!”

I’m curious to see how the angelic Mulligan fits into all of this. The original casting report suggested Mulligan might play either Brandon’s sister or a co-worker who strikes up an affair with Brandon. It appears Beharie has assumed the romantic role (Marianne), while Mulligan will play the sister (Sissy).

Shame ranks high on the anticipation list of any fan of dark psychosexual dramas. (Like me!) The film should hit UK theaters later this year; no word yet on a domestic release date.

Check out Shadow And Act [via The Criterion Cast] for more set photos.

Here’s the synopsis listed in the American Film Market materials:

Brandon (Michael Fassbender, Inglourious Basterds, Hunger, A Dangerous Method) is a 30-something man living in New York who is unable to manage his sex life. After his wayward younger sister moves into his apartment, Brandon’s world spirals out of control.

From director Steve McQueen (Hunger), Shame is a compelling and timely examination of the nature of need, how we live our lives and the experiences that shape us.

First Look At Steve McQueen’s Shame
By Joshua Brunsting on July 31, 2011, 11:26 am

With the Toronto International Film Festival announcing part of its 2011 schedule, arguably the most intriguing member of that slate happens to be Steve McQueen’s follow up to his brilliant debut, Hunger, entitled Shame.

The film stars Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan, and follows a man as he deals with his addiction to sex, and the effect that that has on his life. Now, thanks to TIFF and their website, we have our first look at the film, and it looks great.

We have a collection of photos from the film, and while they aren’t insanely stylish, they do look really good. I think this is easily one of 2011’s most interesting releases, and if the script is anything to be believed, we are in for something special. The screenplay is an odd blend of Cronenberg-style sex and McQueen naturalism, and feels like a film unlike anything we’ve seen in recent memory. The cast is impeccable, and this should definitely be a film that will play as some erotically charged counter programming from all the stiff Oscar bait that we’ll be getting this fall.

First Images From Steve McQueen’s Shame
Michael Fassbender reunites with his Hunger director, Carey Mulligan co-stars.
Posted 26th July 2011, 5:44pm in Film

With the announcement that Shame will screen as part of this year's Toronto International Film Festival, the site have got the very first official images.

Hunger director Steve McQueen reunites with his leading man Michael Fassbender for this drama, with the X-Men: First Class star playing a New Yorker struggling with his sex addiction. Carey Mulligan plays his blues singer sister, who visits and turns his life upside down.

Mulligan and Fassbender are probably the most in-demand (and respected) young actors working in Hollywood today, so Shame looks promising. Fassbender has A Dangerous Method and Jane Eyre coming up, while Mulligan is set to star in Drive and The Great Gatsby.

A UK release date for Shame is yet to be announced.

Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan in new photos from Shame

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

One of the films making waves through the festival circuit at the moment is British filmmaker Steve McQueen’s SHAME. The film is his first follow-up to his disturbingly shocking prison drama HUNGER and early word from critics indicate he is just as impressive with his sophomoric effort. The film is about sex addiction and takes place in New York City. The film reunites McQueen with his HUNGER star Michael Fassbender and if there was ever any doubt that Fassbender is a bona fide A-list star, then this should quiet those fears.

Along with Fassbender, the film stars Carey Mulligan, James Badge Dale and Nicole Beharie. I don’t know if this will have the broad appeal to make any noise come Oscar season, but I’m sure it will pick up a few awards at the smaller shows along the way. The film doesn’t have a US release date yet, but expect it to hit theaters in a limited release in late December.

First Clip and New Images from SHAME
by Matt Goldberg Posted:September 5th, 2011 at 10:23 am

One of my most-anticipated films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival is Steve McQueen’s Shame. McQueen’s debut feature, Hunger, was a breakthrough not only for its director but star Michael Fassbender. Shame reteams the two for a story about “a New York man (Fassbender) confronting his sexual compulsions and the self-destructive acts of his sister (Carey Mulligan).” The film has drawn rave reviews out of Venice and Telluride particularly for Fassbender’s performance.

Now the first clip from the film has gone online. The clip is brief but it shows Fassbender’s character, Brandon, demonstrating that there’s usually something uncomfortable happening on every subway ride at any given point in the day. There’s also a slew of new images including the first look at James Badge Dale as Brandon’s boss, David. Hit the jump to check out the clip and the images. The 2011 Toronto Film Festival runs from September 8 – 18th. Steve and I will be there covering the hell out of it.

Video and images via The Playlist via Shadow and Act via Cinezapping. Clip begins around the 2:30 mark.

SHAME Poster: No Sex, Please
Andre Soares | Oct 6, 2011

Shame poster bed sex Steve McQueen

I'm not sure exactly why the above Shame poster would feature an empty bed. True, it looks like the poster bed from this Steve McQueen movie about a horrific disease known as Sex Addiction has been used — and used a whole lot. But to the best of my knowledge, beds are often used (and used a whole lot) for sleeping. Not that I'd like to get too graphic, but perhaps the poster lacks a few stains, or some lube or something to indicate why that bed is undone. Else, looking at it I'd think the lead character is ashamed because he's too lazy to make his own bed.

Michael Fassbender stars in Shame, playing a man in his 30s who can't stop thinking about sex. He can't stop having it, either. And when he can't get partners, he masturbates and/or watches pornography. It's probably the worst mental illness imaginable. Carey Mulligan plays his equally disturbed sister, though her issues don't necessarily involve bed sheets and the like.

And that reminds of something else that's misleading about that Shame poster. Fassbender's character reaches orgasms of varying intensities in all sorts of locations. I mean, really, who needs a bed in order to have sex?

Distributed by Fox Searchlight, Shame opens in the United States on December 2. Fassbender will likely be a Best Actor Oscar contender, whether for Shame or for more Academy-friendly fare like Jane Eyre or A Dangerous Method. (Hey, remember Dennis Hopper? The year Hopper played his iconic psycho in David Lynch's Blue Velvet, he received an Oscar nod for his now all-but-forgotten small-town drunk in the family-fun Hoosiers.)

Teaser poster for Steve McQueen's SHAME leaves me with a dirty feeling

A teaser poster for Steve McQueen's Shame has arrived online. Fox Searchlight is releasing this film in December, and it will likely get an NC-17 rating. The cast incldues Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan in the story about sexual desire. McQueen directed Fassbender in Hunger, which I have still yet to see. The images below show some cool sets and costuming. Check out the simple yet effective teaser poster below:

Official synopsis:

Brandon is a thirty-something man living in New York who is unable to manage his sex life. After his wayward younger sister moves into his apartment, Brandon?s world spirals out of control. From director Steve McQueen (Hunger), Shame is a compelling and timely examination of the nature of need, how we live our lives and the experiences that shape us. Stars Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, James Badge Dale andNicole Beharie.

Shame arrives in select theaters on December 2nd, 2011.

Crawl into Michael Fassbender's Bed with the Debut Poster for 'Shame'
No guarantee those are clean sheets

If you don't regularly check my movie database homepage you didn't know Fox Searchlight set a December 2 release date for the fall festival hit Shame from director Steve McQueen and starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan. The film will open the same day as Lynne Ramsay's We Need to Talk about Kevin, which is to say you can watch two separate nightmares in a double-feature should your city choose to show both.

Shame centers on Brandon (Fassbender), a 30-something man living in New York with a sexual addiction whose life is turned upside down when his wayward younger sister (Mulligan) moves into his apartment. It's a picture that will test its audience and is quite explicit and sure to earn an NC-17 rating as Searchlight has guaranteed they will not ask McQueen to re-edit the picture for an R rating.

I saw Shame in Toronto and took a lot away from it. In fact, the farther I got away from it the more and more it tended to resonate. Here's the opening paragraph from my Toronto Film Festival review:

Words come to mind to describe Steve McQueen's Shame; words beyond the title such as unrelenting, physical, pain, sex, disposable, disgust, penetration and need. And in those words you will find the story of a thirty-something man with an uncontrollable sex addiction. It's an addiction he's neither proud of nor privately denies he has. McQueen explores this world with a script he co-wrote with playwright Abi Morgan, and he is unforgiving in his intimacy with the material. Yet, to call it intimate almost suggests some measure of delicacy, which isn't altogether misleading, but it doesn't imply the destruction we bear witness to.

Today the poster has debuted via The Hollywood Reporter, check it out directly below and for my complete Toronto review of the film click here.

“Shame” poster invites us into Michael Fassbender’s bed – AWARDS ALLEY
By: Sean O'Connell

Hollywoodnews.com: Simple. Suggestive. A little misleading.

Steve McQueen’s “Shame,” which is impressing critics at the New York Film Festival this week, has a brand new teaser poster. It show’s Michael Fassbender’s rumpled bed sheets, which makes sense on the surface, as McQueen’s drama probes the psyche of a Manhattan-based sex addict.

If you’ve seen “Shame,” though, you know that Fassbender’s Brandon hardly ever has sex in his bed. An alleyway? Sure. In front of his laptop? All the time. But in a crisp, clean bed? I can’t seem to recall.

I’ll have to check it out again now that Fox Searchlight has announced a Dec. 2 release date. “Shame” plays NYFF Friday, Oct. 7, so expect the Internet to erupt with reaction and discussion in the coming hours.

Michael Fassbender’s Dirty Sheets Cover The Teaser Poster For ‘Shame’

When our own Oli Lyttleton saw “Shame” in Venice he declared Michael Fassbender‘s performance a “tour-de-force.” When this writer caught up with it at TIFF, I couldn’t help but agree and with the rest of the Playlist staffers screening it today at NYFF, one of them said that “Fassbender’s performance is easily the strongest male performance of the year.” Yes, he’s that good in Steve McQueen‘s “Shame” but the question now to be answered is how the Academy will respond.

Co-starring Carey Mulligan and a seamy New York City providing the backdrop, the film chronicles one man’s battle and downward spiral as his grip on sex addiction loosens and slowly overcomes him. Yes, there is nudity but this is the least erotic or sexy movie you’ll see all year. Sex in this case is a drug, and the interactions, though graphic, are less about desire than about a need to fill a nameless void. Fassbender haunts the screen like an emotionless shell and as the film goes on his addiction makes him more and more of an exile even in a city where it’s impossible to be alone. It’s deep and dark stuff, utterly powerful and wholly compelling. Of course, whether the prudish members of the Academy will be able to see the performance and not just the nudity and sexuality on display remains to be seen, but here’s hoping they do.

Appropriately, the teaser poster for the film on THR is nothing more than an empty bed with rumpled sheets without even a trace of who might have been there, capturing the stark tone of the movie effectively. Likely to be branded with an NC-17 rating, “Shame” opens in limited release on December 2nd.

Climb Into Michael Fassbender's Bed With New Poster For Shame
discussion2 Comments published: 2011-10-06 17:32:09 Author: Eric Eisenberg
The internet loves minimalist posters. Putting that phrase into a Google image search will bring back hundreds of thousands of results, with artists crafting recognizable one-sheets using only small-but-recognizable details. There aren't any floating heads, big explosions or crappy Photoshop. Now the folks behind Steve McQueen's Shame have put that concept to use in a poster released over on THR. Check it out below or see it over there in high-res.

Sure, it's subtle and people who don't know what the film is about will have no idea why they are looking at a poster of a bed, but if their curiosity leads to research they could get at least a few people interested. It's risky and risque, but it's also fantastic.

In Shame Michal Fassbender stars as Brandon, a sex addict living in New York City. While he does everything in his power to control his temptations, his system is disrupted when his sister (Carey Mulligan) surprises him with a visit and decides to stay indefinitely. Following its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival Fox Searchlight picked up the movie for distribution and has scheduled it to be released on December 2nd.

First Simple But Fantastic Poster for Steve McQueen's Drama 'Shame'

Shame

Since our own Alex Billington saw the film at the Telluride Film Festival last month (read his glowing review right here), Steve McQueen's controversial drama Shame starring Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class) and Carey Mulligan (An Education) has been picked up for distribution by Fox Searchlight and is now slated for release on December 2nd here in the United States. Now THR has revealed the teaser poster for the film that doesn't use the faces or even bodies of the film's fantastic stars, but just one single image with the title super imposed on top, and its simplicity makes it supremely effective . See it below!

Here's the fantastic teaser poster for Steve McQueen's Shame courtesy of THR:

Shame Teaser Poster

Shame is directed by Steve McQueen, who also wrote the script with Abi Morgan. The controversial and sexual drama stars Michael Fassbender as a 30-something living in New York City who can't control his sex life and sexual desire, and things get thrown out of whack when his "fragile" sister, played by Carey Mulligan, moves into his apartment. Fox Searchlight says, "Steve McQueen’s courageous exploration of modern life's extremes is breathtaking. He has crafted an extraordinary film that probes some of the deepest and darkest issues ever portrayed on screen." Fox Searchlight will bring Shame to theaters December 2nd

UK poster for 'Shame' puts its two stars on an equal footing

The collected press on Steve McQueen's "Shame" thus far has presented the film very much as The Michael Fassbender Show -- understandable, given that his superb performance in it represents the creative peak of a breakout year for the actor. Still, I do feel for Carey Mulligan, whose similarly startling work in what is arguably a co-lead role also marks exciting (I'd say career-best) new territory for a rising star, but has been somewhat sidelined in the conversation around the film.

The film's new UK poster, however, puts that to rights: each actor is given precisely half the available space, selling it very much as a two-hander. It's an elegant if not terribly inventive design, but I find it interesting in that it's the first poster for the film to place the emphasis squarely on its stars -- previous designs for the marketing challenge of a movie have skewed distinctly more oblique and theme-oriented.

I found the stark US poster, filled with sight of Fassbender's desolate unmade bed, more inventive and evocative -- hinting at the film's sexual preoccupations without eroticizing it in any way, it's one of my favorite one-sheets of 2011. (By contrast, the stereotypically racy French poster appears to pitch the film as an arty sex comedy.) UK distributor Momentum went in an almost wilfully obscure direction with an early, limited-edition quad made up of an unadorned reflective surface, seemingly inviting potential viewers to recognize the film's title in themselves; they've obviously pulled back considerably for the second design, but it'll surely reap greater commercial rewards.

Here's the UK poster, followed by the tonally-opposed US one. (I could only find a sufficiently large image of the teaser, but give or take credits and quotes, the designs are the same.) Tell us which you prefer.

New Images from SHAME, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, MY WEEK WITH MARILYN, and Many More
by Adam Chitwood Posted:November 16th, 2011 at 3:35 pm

With the holiday movie season upon us, a few new images from some of the upcoming Oscar contenders have been unveiled. We’ve got a new look at Michael Fassbender in the extremely well-received drama Shame. Fassbender plays a sex-addict opposite Carey Mulligan, and our own Matt Goldberg loved the flick. There’s also a new image of Rooney Mara from David Fincher’s highly anticipated adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, another look at Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, and an ominous image of Gary Oldman from the spy thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Watch: Michael Fassbender Pleasures You With His Eyes In Red-Band Trailer For 'Shame'
News by Kevin Jagernauth | November 29, 2011

As we noted in our review for "Shame" earlier today, while Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan deserve every bit of praise for their performances in the film, a special hat tip needs to be given to Lucy Walters. And well, we're glad to see she's given her due in this new red band clip for the movie.

While not as smutty as some might have hoped (sorry ladies, no Fassy wang) the brief spot is centered around a key, but brief sequence that plays a vital role in the film. In "Shame," among many of Brandon's conquests there is one that one that goes to an unexpected place. Without saying too much, Brandon's primal sexual energy -- as well as his deep, soul-ravaging emptiness -- are conveyed in these scenes in which, to put it delicately, he eye fucks the hell out of this woman. Cut that in with a quick tour of Brandon's extra curricular activities and you have another haunting intro to Steve McQueen's unforgettable film. But that subway scene wouldn't work without Walters, who matches Fassbender with an equally smart turn, one that requires trasmitting a wealth of emotions without saying a word.

"Shame" opens in limited release this weekend, and will slowly roll out across the country (doesn't that sound erotic?). See when it comes to your city right here. Watch below. [Embed via ComingSoon]

Michael Fassbender Disregards The Institution Of Marriage In Great New Clip From Shame
December 5, 2011 By Kenji Lloyd

Writer-director Steve McQueen has seen his second film, Shame, quickly become one of the most talked-about films of the year, and in case you’re yet to see any of our coverage of the film so far, you can catch up on it all right here.

Co-written by McQueen and Abi Morgan (Brick Lane, TV’s The Hour), the film has two of the biggest rising stars in recent years in the form of Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan cast in the leads, and has somewhat controversially been given an NC-17 rating in the States, which is their highest rating, meaning that no one under the age of seventeen will be allowed to watch it in cinemas, regardless of whether they are accompanied by an adult, a rating that very few films are granted in the States.

“Brandon (Fassbender) is a New Yorker who shuns intimacy with women but feeds his desires with a compulsive addiction to sex. When his mentally unstable younger sister moves into his apartment stirring memories of their shared painful past, Brandon’s insular life spirals out of control.”

Yahoo Movies have now got a great new clip from the film to share with us, entitled ‘Longest Relationship’, in which Fassbender discusses his perception of committing to one person for the rest of your life, and admits that his longest relationship didn’t really last all that long.

Fassbender won the Best Actor award at last night’s British Independent Film Awards, as well as the Volpi Cup when the film screened at Venice Film Festival back in September, so this is definitely a film to look forward to next year. Jon caught the film at the London Film Festival in October, and you can read his 5-star review of the film here, yet another reason to look forward to it. America is lucky enough to have just seen Shame’s release this past weekend, but we’ve got a little longer to wait until we get it, with its UK release coming on 13th January next year. Without further ado, here’s the great new clip from the film. Enjoy.
