Michael Fassbender Discusses Jane Eyre, Playing Magneto in X-Men: First Class
Posted 03.09.11 by Ryan

2011 is looking to be a big year for actor Michael Fassbender.

After capturing attention for his work in 2009's Inglourious Basterds, Fassbender was cast as Edward Rochester in Jane Eyre, Magneto in X-Men: First Class, and was recently cast in Ridley Scott's upcoming sci-fi epic Prometheus. Fassbender told Moviefone that he doesn't see 2011 as his "breakout year."

I don't really think like that, to be honest. I just try to get the jobs, and then I try to do them properly, and then all the other stuff kind of happens one way another — or not. I don't really think about that, to be honest.

As evidence of Fassbender's desire to work, the actor admitted that he joined Jane Eyre before director Cary Fukunaga and co-star Mia Wasikowska were on board.

I was approached awhile back. I can't remember exactly when, but they just said, "Are you interested in playing Rochester?" And I said yes. And then Cary came on board and I was very excited by the prospects of [the movie], having seen Sin Nombre, and what he did with that film and what a beautiful story that was. And then Mia was cast, and I watched her in In Treatment, and I was like, "Oh, man. This could be really exciting. I just have to try to keep up with these two and we could have something really interesting."

Jane Eyre is opening on March 11, with the trailer showing Fukunaga's dark take on Charlotte Brontë's already dark story. Fassbender then went from JaneEyre to X-Men: First Class, though he admits that director Matthew Vaughn couldn't just hand hm the role that Ian McKellen played for three X-Men movies; he had to audition.

I did, yeah. Which I don't mind. Well, listen: I've always hated auditioning, to be honest [Laughs] ... They'd already cast James [McAvoy], and they wanted to see — well, they wanted to see me. [Laughs] I think Matthew [Vaughn] had always wanted me for the part, but the studio wanted to make sure [because] they were investing so much ... Which is understandable.

Fassbender has previously admitted that he didn't base his performance on McKellen's portrayal, preferring instead to use the comic books as his research. Magneto is still up to his old tricks, Fassbender explained to The Onion.

Human beings, he hasn’t had a very good relationship with them, and doesn’t have a lot of faith or any trust in them. That’s the difference between him and Charles. Charles has hope in human beings, and Magneto thinks they’re just standing in the way of evolution. They’re going to wipe us out if we don’t wipe them out.

With Magneto, there is a very specific history that’s happened to him in the comic books, which is pretty heavy. So you use all of that, and then their moral standpoint is formed from their history and their environment. That’s the interesting thing about Magneto.

Next Showing: X-Men: First Class opens June 3
