This all started during a casual conversation about the extreme hotness of Bradley Cooper being multiplied to infinity by his ability to speak French. Because of that, and because there’s something a bit sexy about being chatted up in a variety of languages – after all, it worked for Gomez and Morticia Addams – we thought we’d spoil you rotten with a bunch of babes who can say “Would you like to go back to my hotel room?” in all sorts of exciting ways.

Read on and be edumacated.

10. Simon Pegg, Kevin Eldon, Amelia Bullmore (Big Train) – German
This may be more of a case of inflicting my personal tastes on you, but there’s something about Big Train-era Simon Pegg cracking wise auf Deutsch that really does it for me.

9. Kobe Bryant – Italian
In addition to shooting mad hoops for the Lakers and being generally tall and dashing (you know, apart from that unfortunate sexual assault allegation), Kobe Bryant also speaks fluent Italian. Wonder if he’ll take up Turkish now that he’s an ambassador for Turkish Airlines?

8. Liv Tyler – Elvish (Sindarin)
Yes, she spoke Elvish (Sindarin, specifically, in case you were wondering) in the Lord Of The Rings movies, but did you know that robo-babe Liv Tyler can still speak J. R. R. Tolkien’s invented language long after having wrapped the epic trilogy? (Indeed, so the Elvish scholars of the internet still debate her pronunciation.)

7. David Lee Roth – Spanish
I’ve always been of the opinion that there’s not a lot that Diamond Dave can’t do (i.e. the splits, high kicks, screaming, boning chicks, flying through the air, being a paramedic), and now you can add speaking and singing “en Español” to things that go better with Dave.

6. Natalie Portman - Hebrew
It’s long since been established that Natalie Portman is basically cooler and smarter than you. Born in Israel, Portman learned to speak Hebrew at elementary school, and later took graduate courses in the language after obtaining her B.A. in Psychology from Harvard. When she’s not swearing like a muthafuckin’ gangsta, she often gives interviews in the ancient language.

5. John Mayer – Japanese
Jury’s out on exactly how much Japanese John Mayer can actually speak (he studied it at high school), but props to him for flooring Ryan Seacrest with this (apparently grammatically perfect, yet slightly mispronounced) Japanese at the Grammy Awards (skip forward to 2:43-mins). What did he say? “Jessica is a lovely woman, and I’m glad to be with her.” Bless!

4. Michael Fassbender – German
Truth: Fassbender is German/Irish by birth, but the bulk of his film roles have been “speaking the King’s”, as he puts it in this most wondrous of Tarantino scenes of dialogue, from Inglourious Basterds, spoken predominantly in German. (NB you might want to turn the speakers down, depending on how your workplace feels about bar-room shoot-outs.)

3. Charlize Theron – Afrikaans
Real talk time: Afrikaans gets a bad rap, but I actually think it’s a beautiful-sounding language (and I have the hots for the accent too, which may or may not have anything to do with District 9). Anyway, Charlize Theron was born in South Africa, as most would be aware, but she still whips out the Afrikaans from time to time.

2. Bradley Cooper – French
As if B. Cooper wasn’t already improbably handsome, how about hearing him riffing in fluent French? (Ignore the fact that this video perplexingly begins with The Baha Men’s Who Let The Dogs Out, s’il vous plait.)

1. Viggo Mortensen – Danish (and French, Russian, Italian, Spanish…)
Look, when it comes to megababes, Viggo Mortensen is basically the all-time reigning world champion. The Renaissance man speaks a variety of languages; in addition to English, Danish and French, he has often said he feels more comfortable expressing himself in Spanish, is conversational in Italian, and learned Russian for David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises and (like co-star Liv Tyler) learned Sindarin Elvish for Lord Of The Rings (in fact, it was Mortensen’s idea for Aragorn to speak more Elvish than director Peter Jackson had initially planned).
