My First Job: Michael Fassbender
With an Irish mother and a German father, Michael Fassbender was raised in a Catholic household in Kilarney, Ireland. At the age of 12 he became an altar boy, a job he says he took very seriously.
“I had to open and close the church everyday. It was actually a great responsibility to be given at that age because you are going around a dark church at night, it’s kind of spooky, opening up the confession boxes and making sure nobody was around,” said Fassbender.
Although he couldn’t recount a specific scary experience, the 34-year-old actor proudly mentioned his speedy rise to head altar boy as well as the separate set of duties that came with the position.
“As head altar boy you do weddings and baptisms and in Ireland you go around to local houses to do mass in the houses. It’s an old tradition that has been around for hundreds of years. All the locals come around and you have a mass at the house and afterwards you have tea and biscuits and cakes and each person gives a donation to the priest and the church and also the altar boy. So, in a weird way, that was the first job where I received a bit of money for what I was doing.”
But Fassbender believes, more than the money, that his time spend serving the church was his primary introduction to what would become the next period in his life, acting.
“Obviously there is so much more than me getting tipped by best men at weddings. I also got introduce to the stage. You know there’s a lot of ritual involved in the Catholic religion in terms of, you ring a bell at a certain point and then you have certain jobs to do up on the altar. It gave me a sense of responsibility.”
“My First Job” is a new series. Each Wednesday Speakeasy will unveil an interview with a celebrity discussing their first job ever, whether it was in their respective field or elsewhere.
