A Dangerous Method Trailer
22.06.11 # Trailers

A Dangerous Method Trailer
Here’s the preview for David Cronenberg’s next, the only movie which prominently features spanking that you’ll be able to talk about in good company for some time, A Dangeous Method. The movie stars Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender, and chronicles the friendship of Freud and Jung during a period in which Jung’s bedside manner becomes super friendly, take a look:

Mortensen and Fassbender seem very well matched in Bale/Jackman Prestige kind of way, and Knightley seems to be somewhat convincing as a nutjob. Not to mention it’s beautifully shot, by the looks of things, and the costuming doesn’t look half bad either. What do you make of it?

Trailer: A Dangerous Method

Manori Ravindran Jun 22, 2011 – 3:30 PM ET | Last Updated: Jun 22, 2011 3:33 PM ET

“Sometimes you have to do something unforgivable just to go on living,” says Michael Fassbender as psychiatrist Carl Jung. Well, we’ll forgive Fassy for that unsightly moustache, because David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method looks terrific. Starring Cronenberg favourite Viggo Mortensen as an uncharacteristically dashing Sigmund Freud and Keira Knightley as Sabina Spielrein, one of Jung’s patients, the film is the director’s latest effort since 2007′s Eastern Promises. The trailer depicts the relationship between Jung and Freud, which is threatened when a troubled Spielrein becomes Jung’s patient and, later, his lover. Thrown into the mix is a lot of cigar-smoking, word association, a quirky Russian accent from Ms. Knightley and some illicit doctor-patient trysts. Ah, Jung love.

New Cronenberg trailer features kinky old psychoanalysts

It appears that David Cronenberg has entered the ground zero of some of his career-long obsessions with A Dangerous Method: the film looks like a psycho-sexual-intellectual ménage a trois between Freud (Viggo Mortensen), Jung (Michael Fassbender), and Jung’s student Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley).

The trailer was posted on the web today, and, true to glorious form, it mingles a high-minded concept with spanking. Rumours that Knightley sprouts an armpit wiener and sucks the life out of the film should be taken with a grain of salt.

Trailer For 'A Dangerous Method' From David Cronenberg

It has finally arrived! The newest film from David Cronenberg, THE Canadian mastermind of the weird, has given us a new tale of the mind with A Dangerous Method. The film stars Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung (the birthfather of Analytical Psychology who believes that religion is dominant in the human psyche), with Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud (founded the principles for psychoanalysis), Kiera Knightley as Sabina Spielrein (a beautiful young woman who ends up seducing Jung and Freud) and Vincent Cassel as Otto Gross (a morally corrupt anarchist who formed the anti-psychiatry and sexual-liberation methods).

Here's the trailer:

The film is based on the acclaimed 2002 play "The Talking Cure" by Christopher Hampton. Here's a brief synopsis of the film:

A beautiful young woman, driven mad by her past. An ambitious doctor on a mission to succeed. An esteemed mentor with a revolutionary cure. Let the mind games begin…

Seduced by the challenge of an impossible case, the driven Dr. Jung (Michael Fassbender) takes the unbalanced yet beautiful Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) as his patient. Jung’s weapon is the method of his master, the renowned Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen). Both men fall under Sabina’s spell. Into the mix comes Otto Gross (Vincent Cassel), a debauched patient who is determined to push the boundaries.

Jung gives in to lust and a passionate affair begins. Sabina becomes the catalyst for Jung’s inspired theories. Meanwhile Freud goes further, delving into Sabina’s brilliant mind until she can take the situation no longer. The bonds between the trio shatter. Driven by desire and revenge, with their reputations at stake, Freud and Jung embark on a battle of wills.

In this dangerous game of sex and intellect, the price will be Sabina’s soul.

A Dangerous Method is directed by David Cronenberg, written by Christopher Hampton based on his play and John Kerr's book "A Most Dangerous Method". Starring Viggo Mortenses, Michael Fassbender, Kiera Knightley and Vincent Cassel. The film was produced in Canada and will be distributed by Sony Pictures Classics in the US. No release date has been set.

Every film fans favourite Canadian body horror shocker, David Cronenberg, has completed his latest project based on Christopher Hamptons stage play 'The Talking Cure'. It focuses on the birth of psychoanalysis in the early 1900's and more specifically the tumultuous relationship between neurologist Sigmund Freud, his gifted pupil Carl Jung and a beautiful young woman named Sabina Spielrein.

The above information alone had Clash all a quiver. Add to the already heady mix of director and intriguing storyline is the ravishing beauty of turn of the century Vienna and the potential for unsettling sadomasochistic sex. Viggo Mortensen, who recently worked with Cronenberg in 'A History Of Violence' and 'Eastern Promises' takes on the role of Freud with the increasingly critically acclaimed Michael Fassbender playing the youthful Jung. We weren't quite so inspired at the casting of Keira Knightly but credit where it's due, she appears to have turned in a sterling performance given the trailer.

Cronenberg has also utilised the talents of his other regular contributors; Howard Shore has composed the score with cinematography overseen by the always brilliant Peter Suschitzky. The only downside is that we'll have to wait until February to see it on the big screen.

Trailer For A Dangerous Method Has Been Released

Written by: Will Chadwick

The latter half of David Cronenberg‘s career has had an interesting shift. The man made his name with splatter and horror movies such as The Fly and Scanners. Nowadays, he’s going for edgy drama albeit with a slight exploitation edge. His new film looks to follow that trend with this very sexually charged trailer for his upcoming period drama A Dangerous Method.

Like usual, it looks to be a complete audience splitter. It focuses on the early relationship between Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, two of the eminent psychologists in the history of the profession. The film is written by Christopher Hampton, who adapted his play The Talking Cure for the screen and looks to have the same similar erotic and satirical pleasure that he brought to Dangerous Liaisons.

The film has a stellar cast leading cast with Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen playing Jung and Freud respectively. Also joining is Keira Knightley as Jung’s deeply troubled patient Sabrina, with whom he develops an affair. This marks Mortensen’s third collaboration with the Canadian auteur, having previously worked with him on A History of Violence and Eastern Promises.

I think the trailer looks magnificent, with a brooding air of menace about it as well as something disturbing, this is creeping up as one of my most anticipated films. A Dangerous Method is set for release later in the year, presumably in time for some Oscar consideration. Watch the trailer below.

A Dangerous Method: Freud Helps Keira Knightley With Her Spanking Problem

Max Read — Here's a trailer for nutty director David Cronenberg's new movie, A Dangerous Method, starring Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud, Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung and Keira Knightley as Sabina Spielrein. That's right, Cronenberg is putting the "psychoanalytic thought" in "psychosexual drama"!

The movie is based on the play The Talking Cure, which fictionalized the relationship between Jung and Spielrein, a patient of Jung's who herself became a psychoanalyst, and, according to some, Jung's lover. And here, by "fictionalize," we mean, "spank-happy sex with Knightley and Fassbender." At the same time, cracks emerge in the relationship between Freud and Jung, former psych-bro-analysts. Tension! Rough sex! Freudianism! All we need is for someone to turn into a bug, and you've got the most Cronenberg movie David Cronenberg has ever made.

This is the third movie in a row that Cronenberg's made with Mortensen, and the last two—A History of Violence and Eastern Promises—were both more than good enough to get me in the theaters for this one, even if the trailer is a little vague. Plus, a bearded Vincent Cassel as pervy anarchist Otto Gross! What more can you ask for?

I will pay my $13 to see this hotty-hot-hot movie, but I wish people would stop putting Keira Knightly into period pieces. She just doesn't look right to me in any of them, not this, not those pirate thingies, nothing where she is being royalty of any kind, nothing.
She looked marvelous in Bend it Like Beckham and also in Love, Actually.

And in various ads and things. She's lovely, but I think she has a very modern look about her and doesn't pull off period pieces well at all, and it's distracting.

I am totally chuffed about this picture, anyway, and have been longing for a new Cronenberg movie anyway ever since my shrink described Black Swan as, "it's as if Cronenberg had directed "The Red Shoes."

Keira Knightley, Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen star in A Dangerous Method trailer

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

David Cronenberg doesn’t always hit home runs, but he makes movies that have a very distinct, sexual tone to them and when it works, it usually works very well. His latest film, A DANGEROUS METHOD looks like he’s managed to capture the sexuality of the story and in the process, bring out the best of stars Keira Knightley, Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen. If there was any question about the acting talent of Michael Fassbender, hopefully this will quiet the doubters. Keira Knightley also looks like she gives a great performance and shows she has more range than people thought. If this film is an intense as the trailer, then this might be the first true contender for acting awards next year.

The film is about the relationship that developed between psychiatrist Carl Jung and his Russian-Jewish patient Sabina Spielrein that turned romantic and eventually caused a rift between Jung and his mentor Sigmund Freud.

"A Dangerous Method" trailer promises hot Freudian action
Indulge us as we (psycho)analyze the first trailer for David Cronenberg's new film.

It feels like we've been waiting for David Cronenberg's new movie for an eternity. It's been four years since his last film, "Eastern Promises," and at least a year or two reading about "A Dangerous Method," his film about the relationship and rivalry between Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender). The film premieres at the end of August at the Venice Film Festival; today, we finally got a look at the trailer.

Carl Jung, you old horndog!

Though I would gladly pay ten dollars to see Cronenberg adapt a Chinese takeout menu, I didn't really get his interest in Freud, Jung and the origins of psychoanalysis when I first read about the project. When I think of Cronenberg, I think of worlds and subjects that are ultra-modern, if not outright futuristic. And then I watched the trailer, and I heard lines like "Why should we put so much effort into repressing our most basic natural instincts?" and I realized: duh, sex. He's making a movie about sex. Sex plays a hugely important role in so many of his movies, from "Videodrome," to "Dead Ringers," to "A History of Violence." "A Dangerous Method" clearly fits in perfectly; it's just got more old timey clothes and stuff.

Sony Pictures Classics just acquired the film last week. They've yet to set a release date.

Watch This: 'A Dangerous Method' Trailer is Kinky
By: Emily Cheever

A dangerous method
THEY'RE GONNA DO IT.

Michael Fassbender, Viggo Mortensen, Keira Knightley, and Vincent Cassel get out their whips and gags for the next sexy period piece A Dangerous Method. Directed by David Cronenberg, A Dangerous Method is adapted from the play The Talking Cure which was based on the book A Very Dangerous Method. It centers around the relationships of psychologists Carl Jung (Fassbender), Sigmund Freud (Mortensen), and Russian hottie Sabina Spielrein (Knightley). So basically a love triangle of the hottest old tymey sort.

Watch more movie trailers here and here.

Earlier, Christopher Waltz was rumored to be cast as Freud, but I'm pretty sure that Mortensen is the better choice, considering his past with Cronenberg (Eastern Promises, A History of Violence) and he's just a touch sexier. Anyway, this movie looks like an awesome movie to bring your girlfriend and/or boyfriend (I say "and" because some of you out there might be polyamorous). Hey, no judgement here. Although I don't know what Freud would say about that...

A Dangerous Method Trailer: Michael Fassbender Takes Keira Knightley as a Lover
Next
Shannon Vestal / June 21, 2011 2:27 pm

Michael Fassbender fans, get ready for some steamy historical drama for the actor in David Cronenberg's latest film, A Dangerous Method. Fassbender plays Carl Jung, the renowned Swiss psychiatrist, in this film, set in Europe in the early 1900s. Jung meets and collaborates with his mentor and contemporary Sigmund Freud (Cronenberg favorite Viggo Mortensen) on what would ultimately become psychoanalysis.

But personal complications arise, and things get juicy. When new, very troubled patient Sabina (Keira Knightley, playing Russian) enters into his care, the married Jung takes a marked interest in her fractured mental state — and into her personally. As he blurs the professional lines and takes her as his mistress, his wife and Freud challenge his actions, while Jung questions them himself. The movie looks to be a mix of erotica and biopic, which is a welcome respite from the violence in Cronenberg's most recent films. If you're curious to check it out, watch the trailer when you read more.

First Look at ‘A Dangerous Method’ Trailer

By WSJ Staff

Sex, Sigmund Freud and Michael Fassbender — director David Cronenberg’s “A Dangerous Method” has all this and then some. The first trailer for the Sony Pictures Classics film premiered today.

The new period drama, which as of late has no set release date, stars Fassbender as Carl Jung, whose personal and professional relationship with famed psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud is tested when a mysterious and sexually charged Russian patient comes between them.

Viggo Mortensen plays Freud and Keira Knightley has billing as the Russian, Sabina Spielrein. (We’re not so sure about Knightley’s Russian accent, either).

The movie looks dark and sensual and is likely to be award bait if it makes good on its promising trailer.

Watch the clip here.

‘A Dangerous Method’ International Trailer: Sex, Lies, & Cigars
Jun 21, 2011 by Sandy Schaefer

An international trailer has been released for David Cronenberg’s ‘A Dangerous Method’, a period drama about the relationship between Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender).

A Dangerous Method movie trailer

Michael Fassbender’s reputation as a powerhouse actor has grown stronger, in the wake of his acclaimed turn as a young Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto in X-Men: First Class. His performance in director David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method looks to only further cement Fassbender’s status as a force to be reckoned with onscreen.

An international trailer has been unveiled for A Dangerous Method, which is currently in post-production and has yet to secure an official U.S. release date -- but is nonetheless expected to reach theaters by the second half of 2011.

A Dangerous Method was scripted by Oscar-winner Christopher Hampton (Dangerous Liaisons, Atonement), working from his original play -- which is itself based on the novel by John Kerr. It in part covers the birth of modern psychoanalysis, as devised by two pioneers (and colleagues) in the field: Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung (Fassbender).

However, the drama in Cronenberg’s adaptation revolves around a gorgeous patient by the name of Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), a woman with whom Dr. Jung eventually begins an affair -- an act that puts him at odds with both his peers and Dr. Freud, who also becomes infatuated with Sabina in his own less-than-healthy manner.

Needless to say, A Dangerous Method is a psychological and often erotically-charged period drama -- which the international trailer very much reflects. Bear that in mind before you watch the theatrical preview (which is borderline NSFW) below:

Mortensen and Cronenberg have brought out the best in one another in their previous collaborations (see: A History of Violence, Eastern Promises) and A Dangerous Method looks like it will be no exception. The Lord of the Rings star appears to be in top form as the subtly intimidating Freud, with his quiet but firm manner -- not to mention, seemingly never without a (phallic) cigar in his mouth. That also goes for Black Swan‘s Vincent Cassel as Otto Gross, a disciple of Freud whose professional persona is in direct contrast to his (put politely) less-scrupulous personal habits.

However, it’s Fassbender who really looks like the film’s star in this trailer, portraying Dr. Jung as a man who both gives in and is repelled by his own darker, deviant desires. Knightley looks to do well enough as the femme fatale that inspires Fassbender’s character to take a walk on the wild side (so to speak), but she doesn’t seem to have nearly as meaty a role to work with as her male co-stars.

Keira Knightley A Dangerous Method movie image

Knightley in 'A Dangerous Method'.

Cronenberg is no stranger to tales about the bizarre side of human desire (see: Crash), but A Dangerous Method may end up being one of his more accessible films. Between engaging performances from both Mortensen and Fassbender, the intriguing subject matter, and the film’s excellent-looking production design, this could definitely be an awards contender -- assuming it arrives in U.S. theaters before the end of 2011.

We’ll let you know when A Dangerous Method has secured an official release date here in the States.

Trailer Watch: Cronenberg’s Official Dangerous Method Trailer

Sony Pictures Classics scooped up U.S. rights to David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method last week and now has released the official trailer, below. Produced by Jeremy Thomas (The Last Emperor), the film, which is in post-production, stars Viggo Mortenson as Sigmund Freud and Keira Knightley as the unbalanced patient of Freud’s protege, ambitious young psychiatrist Karl Jung (Michael Fassbender). Vincent Cassel co-stars as another patient who pushes the rival shrinks apart. More detail below.

Cronenberg is working again with director of photography Peter Suschitsky, costume designer Denise Cronenberg, editor Ronald Sanders (A History of Violence and Eastern Promises), and production designer James McAteer (A History of Violence) as well as composer Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings trilogy). Christopher Hampton (Atonement) adapted his own play.

Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender Want to Know About Your Kinks in A Dangerous Method Trailer
By Damon Houx

Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender Want to Know About Your Kinks in A Dangerous Method Trailer

One of the great modern working relationships is Viggo Mortensen and David Cronenberg. A Dangerous Method is their third film together, and while Eastern Promises was solid but minor Cronenberg, this looks like the master in full-on kink mode. Mortensen plays Freud, while Michael Fassbender plays Carl Jung, who obviously gets in over his head with paitent Keira Knightley. Check out the trailer…

Thanks to Empire for the trailer. One of the best things about Cronenberg is that he’s not afraid to delve into deviancy, and the subject matter is intruiging because it’s about someone who must wrestle with the emotional versus the physical, and also because the idea of Michael Fassbender spanking Keira Knightley is its own reward. And all the main performers have shown a willingness to let it all hang out, so how far this goes is likely left to the MPAA.

Sony Pictures Classics will be releasing the film at some point in the next year. Michael Fassbender is primed to be the star of the year (even if X-Men: First Class is doing so-so business), so if his performance is excellent, it wouldn’t be surprising for this to be Oscar bait. The pedigree is there, the question is if it will be too much, too explicit for the supposedly elderly academy.

Who in this cast would you most like to be spanked by?

Movie News By Cole Abaius on June 21, 2011

New Cronenberg means that Christmas comes in September this year, and Christmas Eve happens today with the release of the first trailer for A Dangerous Method.

The film focuses on the real-life story of Carl Jung developing his methods with mentorship from Sigmund Freud and getting a little on the side with one of his patients. The drama is heady, and the cast is superb. Michael Fassbender as Jung, Viggo Mortensen as Freud, and Keira Knightley as the mistress Sabina Spielrein.

First Official Trailer for Cronenberg's 'A Dangerous Method'
Tuesday, 21 June 2011 10:25 Written by Jordan DeSaulnier

You could never accuse David Cronenberg of being prudish. The director has always been happy to explore the complex and often strange psychology of human sexuality, so A Dangerous Method is ideally suited to his predilections. The film stars Cronenberg muse Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud and Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung, with the Austrian and Swiss intellectuals going from friends to rivals and at the dawn of the psychoanalytic movement. Also on hand is the excellent Vincent Cassel, along with Keira Knightley as the woman who comes between them. Even if you're not a fan of Cronenberg, this is a trailer in which Knightley is copiously spanked. So there you go.

The embed is courtesy of Empire Online, but the trailer can also be viewed in higher resolution at the film's official site.

Oscar-winning Dangerous Liasons writer Christopher Hampton adapted the script from his own play, The Talking Cure. David Cronenberg brings along a cadre of his regular collaborators, including cinematographer Peter Suschitzky, editor Ronald Sanders, and composer Howard Shore, all three of whom have contributed to Croneberg's last two films, Eastern Promises and A History of Violence.

A Dangerous Method will receive Stateside distribution from Sony Pictures Classics, but a release date has not yet been announced.

Trailer For David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method
By Joshua Brunsting on June 21, 2011, 12:31 pm

Just about a week after a horribly grainy bootleg copy of the first trailer for the much hyped David Cronenberg film, A Dangerous Method, hit the web, we finally have our first official trailer, and it’s absolutely breathtaking.

The film is based on the play The Talking Cure from writer Christopher Hampton, and stars Michael Fassbender, Keira Kightley and Viggo Mortensen in a story following the breaking apart of the friendship between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud after the beautiful Sabina Spielrein is introduced.

The trailer itself looks to be much smaller in scale than many of Cronenberg’s films, but given the mood and atmosphere of the trailer, it looks no less erotically charged. The film will be hitting stateside thanks to Sony Pictures Classics, and should be an interesting change of pace for Cronenberg. He’s been working on a much bigger scale, particularly with a film like EASTERN PROMISES, so this smaller, more stage-play style film should be an interesting change of pace. DANGEROUS METHOD has been described as feeling a bit too “stagey,” so maybe the scale is almost too small, but that will be for you to judge when the film hits later this year.

A Dangerous Method Trailer: Thinky Kink With Knightley, Fassbender, and Mortensen

6/21/11 at 3:30 PM

Here's a prescription for David Cronenberg: never make us go four years without a new film again. It's felt like an eternity since Cronenberg's gangbusters thriller Eastern Promises — indeed, it's the longest hiatus from the big screen in the director's career — but now there's finally a trailer for his follow-up, the erotic drama A Dangerous Method. The movie stars Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen as strangely good-looking versions of Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, respectively, whose bond is tested when Fassbender takes in Keira Knightley as his patient and decides to get very hands-on with her. The two engage in a torrid affair full of enough kinky sex and rough stuff to inspire several Rihanna videos, and Vincent Cassel is there, too, just in case you needed a little more highbrow, art-movie eroticism. Spanking! Canes! Interesting facial-hair choices! Risky attempts at foreign accents! Are you in? [Coming Soon]

Watch Sexy Magneto Spank Keira Knightley in A Dangerous Method

Tue., Jun. 21, 2011 11:15 AM PDT by Gregory Imler

If there's one person taking the summer movie buzz by storm this year, it's Michael Fassbender. The German-born star has broken out in a big way thanks to his smoldering performance as Magneto opposite James McAvoy in X-Men: First Class.

But if you were worried that would be your only dose of the guy with cool to spare, fear not. He's costarring alongside Keira Knightley in director David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method. It's definitely hot, but because of some friendly, uh, touching, it's slightly not safe for work. Check it out...if you think you can handle it.

MORE: Check out the five best trailers of the summer so far!

Fassbender plays renowned psychologist Carl Jung in the early stages of his career, working with renowned neurologist Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen). It seems that Fassy's on the edge of a breakthrough; he only needs that one special patient who is, for lack of a better phrase, crazy enough to reap the benefits of his new, experimental therapy.

Turns out Knightley fits the bill. She wastes no time revealing that past abuse "excited" her and that any possible advances from her trusted therapist would be most welcome. Like any good therapist, Fassbender rationalizes the whole situation: "Why should we put so much effort into suppressing our most basic natural instincts?" Just keep telling yourself that.

Freud is not amused, and all it takes is a few piercing and judgy glances from Mortensen to let us know where he stands on the issue of cavorting with a patient.

A Dangerous Method hits theaters Nov. 11. Does it have you..."excited"?

First Trailer For David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method
Submitted by Brendon Connelly on June 21, 2011 – 1:27 pm

Technology. Sex. Abberant psychology. This trailer wants us to know that it’s for a David Cronenberg picture.

Herein you’ll find Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung, Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud and Keira Knightley as Sabina Spielrein, the woman that got tossed back and forth between them. Between those two, powerful charismatic actors I think Knightley is going to have to try twice as hard to not just look like a cricket ball they’re tossing back and forth, something inanimate with no energy of its own. Tough gig.

Sarah Gadon, who plays Emma Jung, has a role in Cronenberg’s currently filming Cosmopolis.

Cronenberg And Mortensen Get Freudian In Dangerous Method Trailer
The trailer for David Cronenberg's newest film, a historical drama, stars Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender as Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, respectively.

Hopefully there won't be any lingering dick shots in this one. Credit: Focus Features

If we were to pick a currently working actor as a muse, we'd probably steer clear of hard-faced middle-aged men and just go with Alexander Skarsgård, because frankly, the man's an Adonis. But then again, we're not groundbreaking, critically-acclaimed filmmakers, so instead of arguing with David Cronenberg's continued use of Viggo Mortenson, we'll just stick to what we're good at: Watching True Blood and questioning our sexuality.

A Dangerous Method marks the third Cronenberg movie in a row to star Mortenson, who also played the lead in both A History of Violence and Eastern Promises. Unlike those two rather, well, violent flicks, A Dangerous Method is a historical drama, starring Mortensen as Sigmund Freud, and Michael Fassbender as his student, Carl Jung. The "method" of the title refers to Freud's signature tool of psychoanalysis, the talking cure, but of course, we all know that the MOST dangerous method has already been depicted in Cronenberg's Scanners.

"Tell me about your mother."

In the film, Jung attempts to treat Sabina Spielrein, a young woman played by Keira Knightley, with the talking cure. Of course, things aren't that simple, as the girl quickly comes between Freud and Jung, and things go from bad to worse when Jung accidentally his shares DNA with a common housefly. Probably not that last part actually, but still, it's Cronenberg, you should check it out.

A Dangerous Method, Viggo Mortensen, Michael Fassbender
"A Dangerous Method" Trailer Chock-full of Spanking

The trailer for director David Cronenberg's "A Dangerous Method" has very quietly made its way into cyberspace, and we're surprised how surprised we are by the prevalence of corporal punishment.

"A Dangerous Method" stars Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensens as Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, with Keira Knightley as Sabina Spielrein, Jung's patient-turned-protege with whom she allegedly had an affair.

In Cronenberg's film, based on the play "The Talking Cure," the affair definitely happened, and involved a fair amount of spanking. Considering Cronenberg's past films--"The Fly," "Crash," "Dead Ringers"--we should've seen this coming.

We have to say, we're mildly disappointed by the trailer. It isn't bad, but it didn't really grab us, either. But there's too much talent involved not to look forward to this one.

The trailer appeared today at ADangerousMethod-TheMovie.com, with no other information, not a synopsis or US release or nothing. But it's sure to be here in the fall, with an eye toward awards season.

Trailer: Our first look at David Cronenberg’s A DANGEROUS METHOD
Written by Brandon News, Trailer Jun 21, 2011

I was concerned that David Cronenberg’s A DANGEROUS METHOD wouldn’t have kinky sex and the themes of supression and guilt. Well my worries were unfounded!

The first trailer for A DANGEROUS METHOD is now online and it proves that, while it’s a period piece, it’s definitely a Cronenberg film. The movie, starring Viggo Mortensen, Michael Fassbender and Keira Knightley, tells the true story of Sigmund Freud (Mortensen) and Carl Jung (Fassbender) as Jung becomes ever-involved with a trouble patient of his (Knightley). Things heat up and get complicated. Of course they do, this is a Cronenberg film.

I can’t think of a hotter cast than Mortensen, Fassbender and Knightley. Mortensen is always on fire, Fassbender is a rising star and I think Knightley is solid is most of her work (especially last year’s NEVER LET ME GO). I can’t wait to see them indulge in their sexual desires and surely ruin their personal and professional lives. Who knew psychology could be so hot?

A DANGEROUS METHOD premieres at the Venice Film Festival in August.

Set on the eve of the World War I, A Dangerous Method is based on the turbulent relationships between fledgling psychiatrist Carl Jung, his mentor Sigmund Freud, and Sabina Spielrein, the troubled but beautiful young woman who comes between them.

David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method Trailer Debuts
by Scott "Kubryk" Sawitz - June 21, 2011

Michael Fassbender is red-hot, career wise, right now and the only thing missing is a prestige piece to try and earn him some critical accolades. Consider that one solved with a teaming of Fassbender, David Cronenberg and Viggo Mortensen and A Dangerous Method. Christopher Hampton wrote the film based off his 2002 stage play The Talking Cure, itself based on the 1993 non-fiction book “A Most Dangerous Method” by John Kerr.

Plot Summary: Set on the eve of the World War I, A Dangerous Method is based on the turbulent relationships between fledgling psychiatrist Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender), his mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen), and Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), the troubled but beautiful young woman who comes between them.

No U.S release date has been set for the film.
