Exclusive: Steven Soderbergh's 'Haywire' Moves From Lionsgate To Overture, Late March/Early April '11 Release Date Planned

It looks like the wait for Steven Soderbergh's spy thriller "Haywire" might be a bit longer than expected. According to our sources, the tentatively scheduled January 2011 date will not go ahead as planned, as the film is now reportedly changing distributors.

From what we hear, Lionsgate will no longer be handling "Haywire," with Overture taking over the film's North American release. Ryan Kavanaugh (who produced the film via his Relativity Media shingle) acquired the financially ailing Overture earlier this summer, so the reason for the distribution switch seems obvious. The move is interesting since Kavanaugh had a "put deal" in place with Lionsgate and Soderbergh was eager and confident in the abilities of execs Tim Palen and Joe Drake to make sure the genre film was given the right marketing push. No word yet on details around the switch but what we've been told is that the distribution change now means the film is currently eyeing a late March or early April 2011 release.

As for Overture, which ran into financial trouble earlier this year, the acquisition is certainly a very high profile pick-up for the distributor that is making a strong rebound in the latter half of 2010 with a solid arthouse candidate in Philip Seymour Hoffman's "Jack Goes Boating" and the highly anticipated horror film "Let Me In" waiting in the wings.

Even though the film is switching hands, we should be ready for some marketing material to arrive soon. We're told that the excellent designer Neil Kellerhouse, who created posters for "The Girlfriend Experience," "The Social Network" and a number of DVD covers for The Criterion Collection, has created a poster for "Haywire" which should be coming soon. Also, Soderbergh is planning to put six minutes of the film on YouTube in which the film's star and mixed martial-artist Gina Carano will apparently "destroy" one of her male co-stars. We can't wait.

With an all-star cast featuring Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton, Michael Angarano, Matthieu Kassovitz, Channing Tatum and Antonio Banderas we probably don't have to tell you this one can't hit theaters soon enough.

Soderbergh’s "Haywire" Swaps Distributors

Overture has apparently taken over the North American release of Steven Soderbergh's spy thriller "Haywire" from Lionsgate reports The Playlist.

The switch is likely due to the film's producer Ryan Kavanaugh who acquired the financially troubled Overture Films earlier this year. Overture is quickly making a name for itself with "Let Me In" and "Jack Goes Boating" scheduled for release in coming weeks.

The project was scheduled for a January 2011 release, that looks to be out the window with an Easter 2011 release now currently being considered.

Soderbergh is reportedly planning to put six minutes of the film on YouTube soon. The story centers on a spy (mixed martial artist Gina Carano) who works for a Blackwater-style security contractor and is betrayed by one of her teammates.

The cast includes the likes of Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton, Michael Angarano, Matthieu Kassovitz, Channing Tatum and Antonio Banderas.

Soderbergh’s Haywire Moves Production Companies

Posted by Adam Lowes on September 16, 2010 · View Comments

The Playlist have reported that Steven Soderbergh’s film Haywire (formerly Knockout) has switched companies from LionsGate for Overture, and the planned January 2011 US release date has now been moved to sometime in early spring.

The film follows the story of a black ops super soldier on the road to revenge after being betrayed and set up during a mission.

Not the most gripping of news (especially as no date has been set for over here as yet), but when you have a cast list comprised of the likes of Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Michael Angarano, Matthieu Kassovitz, Channing Tatum, Bill Paxton and Antonio Banderas (with the added attraction of Soderbergh working within the action genre) this begins to sounds very intriguing indeed.

We’ll let you know as soon as a confirmed date for release in the UK is announced.

Exclusive: Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Haywire’ Set For April 22, 2011 Release

No, in case you were wondering (or didn’t hear the news), Steven Soderbergh‘s forthcoming spy action/thriller “Haywire” did not receive an Oscar qualifying run in New York and Los Angeles in October. That was basically an AMC ticketing snafu, but the news did create a ruckus on the web for a minute.

Starring non-actor/mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano, “Haywire” is simply not that kind of picture. Sources close to the project have described it to us as “if Alfred Hitchock made a Pam Grier movie” and let’s not forget it will have a score by David Holmes who composed the funky, retro-exotica scores to Soderbergh’s “Ocean’s 11-13” films (you can almost count on the fact that Holmes will likely score the just-announced “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” as well) and the tone and mood of “Haywire” sounds like it was greatly affected by his score.

Featuring an all-star cast including Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton, Michael Angarano, Matthieu Kassovitz and Antonio Banderas, the picture is a gritty spy thriller written by Lem Dobbs (”The Limey”) and starring Carano as a black ops soldier on mission of revenge after she’s double crossed by one of her team-mates (we read the script and it’s taut, lean and mean; typically no-nonsense work by Dobbs).

Last we heard, Relativity Media had essentially bought back “Haywire” from Lionsgate (Relativity Media financed it but Lionsgate had initially acquired it for North American release, Relativity also recently did the same with “Season of The Witch”—they bought it back) and we were told a late March/early April 2011 release was being planned, bumped off from the original idea of a January release.

That release date stuck. While no one is yet officially commenting on the Lionsgate/Relativity move (Overture who have now been absorbed into Relativity once denied it over Twitter), we’re told the film will be receiving an April 22, 2011 release date. That means the film will be up against Sony‘s “Born to Be a Star” remake, Warner Bros. “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and ironically, Lionsgate‘s own “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family.” It’s a smart move considering “Haywire” is essentially completely different from all those films and will target an entirely different demographic.

One of Anne Thompson‘s spies saw the film earlier this year and wrote her to say, “Haywire is pretty fine. Very much like John Huston in his ‘Kremlin Letter’/’Mackintosh Man’ period.” McGregor is playing in essence Erik Prince, added [her] informant, who also admired David Holmes’ “way cool” score.

Haywire (Knockout) release date Empty Re: Haywire (Knockout) release date

Post by Admin Thu Nov 18, 2010 11:41 pm

http://www.slashfilm.com/release-dates-set-haywire-bad-teacher-footloose/

Finally there’s Haywire, the Steven Soderbergh action/espionage film that has an all-star cast surrounding the film debut of MMA fighter Gina Carano. (The rest of the cast includes Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton, Michael Angarano, Matthieu Kassovitz and Antonio Banderas.) The Limey screenwriter Lem Dobbs wrote the script, which has Gina Carano’s character as a black-ops solider out for revenge after being double-crossed by a teammate.

The film was scheduled for a January date by LionsGate, but was reportedly pushed to a later month when a distributor switch took place in September. Reports were that Relativity, which financed the film, bought it back from LionsGate. (As the company did with Season of the Witch.) Relativity also bought Overture, and while a rep from Overture denied in September that there was any move going on, we’re told that the film will be released by Relativity on April 22, 2011. So, there’s a conflict between the official info and what The Playlist is reporting, but the latter has been right on top of accurate info about this movie from day one. So we’re willing to believe them again, and will revise if Overture/Relativity respond with different info. [The Playlist]

HAYWIRE

Channing Tatum's MoviesThe Playlist is exclusively reporting that Chan’s action-revenge spy thriller ‘Haywire‘ now has an official release date.

After watching Chan flex his comedic chops in ‘The Dilemma‘ last weekend and tackle a Roman-era dramatic role in ‘The Eagle‘ on February 11, 2011, fans will get a triple dose of the busy actor in ‘Haywire‘ when it hits theaters on April 22, 2011…a mere 7 days before the entire world shuts down to watch Prince William marry Kate Middleton in the royal wedding of the century.

‘Haywire‘ is about a black ops spy (Carano) who’s betrayed by her team and goes rogue in an attempt to figure out who’s setting her up. While everyone is on the same side initially, the film supposedly features a lot of duplicity, double crosses, and reversals of allegiances.

Chan (who filmed his role in Barcelona, Spain and New Mexico last February and March) will play one of the elite specialists on Carano’s team. His character is a military gearhead-type who’s sent to try and bring her back in once she’s been double-crossed.

The incredible supporting cast also includes Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton, Michael Angarano, and Mathieu Kassovitz. Fassbender reportedly plays an untrustworthy teammate, while Douglas ultimately proves to be an ally. McGregor, the owner of the Blackwater-type special ops team (and once a romantic interest to Carano), is instrumental in trying to make her character, Mallory Kane, take the fall for an incident that goes wrong and involves a murder.

Steven Soderbergh Says ‘Haywire’ Moved To Summer; Happy About His ‘Reshoot’ Luxury On The Picture
Filmmaker Gives More Details On The Leni Riefenstahl Project He Deep-Sixed

Late last year we reported that Steven Soderbergh‘s spy action thriller “Haywire,” starring MMA fighter and non-actor Gina Carano, was set to bow on April 22. In January, Soderbergh himself confirmed that date, but obviously if you’ve been paying close attention, you know that’s not happening.

It’s April 1 this Friday and no pictures, posters or trailers have been revealed (or at least not that the public has seen), so obviously the picture isn’t landing in theaters in less than a month; that much you can be assured of. We’ve been hearing for the last few months that August was the new target date and last week during a lecture at Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute where he received an Honorary Degree for his artistic contributions to filmmaking, Soderbergh confirmed a release for the film was coming “this summer.”

Reshoots took place on the film earlier just a few months ago—see some photos here—and Soderbergh brought them up in his lecture to film students as a luxury you want to have. When asked if he would ever change anything in his career or his films, the director answered immediately, “Oh, I would change everything,” he said and then cited a “Haywire” example. “The film was basically done last summer,” he said. “And the people who financed the movie said, ‘you know you’re two million dollars under budget and there’s ten months before the movie comes out do you want to go back in and work on it?’ And I said, ‘Of course I do.’”

Reshoots generally do have a negative connotation, but Soderbergh said reshoots are actually a filmmaker’s dream. “I would love that opportunity on every film, but you don’t [always get it].”

“Haywire” includes an impressive array of screen talent including Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton, Michael Angarano and more, so hopefully an official release date pops up soon.

Meanwhile, at the same lecture, the filmmaker also unveiled more details about the Leni Riefenstahl film he and “The Informant” writer Scott Z. Burns had intended to make about the infamous German film propaganda documentarian.

“She made long form music videos for the Nazis, basically,” Soderbergh said, explaining what their spin on the material would be. “[Scott] and I were working on it and I thought we had an interesting take on it which was: to see if we could make the audience root for her and treat Hitler and Goebbels as like the studio heads and treat her as the aggrieved artist who is being held back by Phillistines and to really flip the thing upside down. The job is not to judge your characters, your job is to present their point of view as they would want it presented so I thought, ‘Wow, that would be interesting if you could somehow over 90 minutes convince somebody to root for someone who probably on some level was pretty horrible.”

Interestingly enough, the Riefenstahl film is something that was fairly recent and actually came close to being made until Soderbergh’s cooler head prevailed. “What ended up happening was the day before we were supposed to ‘make the deal’ to make the movie I said to [Scott Z. Burns], ‘I don’t want to do this, nobody is going to see this, not even our friends,’ ” he admitted candidly. “I thought, ‘I’ve done this before, I’m not going to spend two years working on something that really, frankly, that has no chance of being seen by anybody.’ And it wouldn’t have been cheap. It would be cheap by most movie standards, but not cheap.”

As Soderbergh already mentioned recently at a Studio 360 chat in Omaha, Nebraska, the meeting was already set and they didn’t want to cancel it so the filmmaker asked the writer what else they could pitch. Burns said he wanted to make a “movie about a pandemic” that eventually turned into the virus thriller “Contagion,” which is already shot and arrives this fall on October 21st.

The filmmaker has basically already stated quite clearly that he has two films left in the queue—“Liberace” with Matt Damon and Micheal Douglas and “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” with George Clooney—and then he’s out of the game. He’s tackled pretty much every genre known to man, but in describing his tastes, he did reveal one genre that he’d have never touched, impending retirement or otherwise.

“Fortunately I like all kinds of movies. As a result my interests are pretty broad as a filmmaker. If a film takes place in a millieu that I haven’t worked in or been exposed to before I’m already interested and then I’m trying to figure out ‘What’s the take? What’s our approach?” he then paused. “Except…I don’t like Westerns, or at least, I don’t watch them unless I’m forced to.”

Haywire (Knockout) release date Empty Re: Haywire (Knockout) release date

Post by Admin Wed Jun 15, 2011 10:39 pm

http://www.deadline.com/2011/06/relativity-media-to-distribute-steven-soderbergh-directed-haywire/

BREAKING: Relativity Media will release Haywire, the Steven Soderbergh-directed action film that will get a January 20, 2012 release date. Though Relativity Media financed the pic, it was originally going to be released domestically by Lionsgate. I'm told it was a better fit for Relativity. The film will be released overseas by Mandate, Lionsgate's international distribution arm. It becomes the second film in two days to move from Lionsgate to Relativity Media. The other was Machine Gun Preacher, and that one moved because director Marc Forster wanted it released this year and Lionsgate was unable to accommodate it because of a busy fall schedule.

Haywire stars mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Bill Paxton, Antonio Banderas and Michael Angarano.

Haywire (Knockout) release date Empty Re: Haywire (Knockout) release date

Post by Admin Wed Jun 15, 2011 10:40 pm

The press release courtesy of Collider: http://collider.com/haywire-release-date-relativity/96675/
Quote
(Beverly Hills, CA) June 15, 2011 – Relativity Media announced today that it has retained North American rights to theatrically market and distribute its action-thriller Haywire, directed by Oscar® winner Steven Soderbergh (Traffic). The film is set for a January 20, 2012 wide release.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Gina Carano (American Gladiators) makes her feature film debut, starring and performing her own high-adrenaline stunts. The film’s talented cast also includes Channing Tatum (GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra), Ewan McGregor (The Ghost Writer), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Antonio Banderas (Desperado), Bill Paxton (Titanic), Michael Douglas (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps) and Michael Angarano (Almost Famous).

In Haywire, an electrifying tale of espionage and betrayal, a female covert ops specialist (Carano), who works in the deadly world of international operatives, strikes back after discovering she’s been double-crossed by someone close to her in the agency. The film is produced by Gregory Jacobs (Ocean’s Trilogy) and written by Lem Dobbs (The Limey).

The film was previously set to release through Lionsgate, a distribution partner before Relativity structured its own distribution arm. Lionsgate’s Mandate International is handling foreign rights.

“We are honored to be working with Steven Soderbergh on this project. This film is full of amazing action sequences, and with a sophistication only Soderbergh can deliver,” said Relativity’s President of Worldwide Production, Tucker Tooley. “We’re very excited to add our picture to Relativity’s 2012 slate. We’re looking forward to working with our partners at Lionsgate on the release internationally.”

Looking ahead, Relativity will release David Ellis’ Shark Night 3D on September 2, 2011 and then the highly-anticipated Immortals on November 11, 2011, starring Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas, Freida Pinto, Luke Evans and Kellan Lutz with John Hurt and Mickey Rourke. The studio is in production on its Untitled Snow White Project (in theatres March 16, 2012), starring Lily Collins as Snow White, Oscar®-winner Julia Roberts as the evil Queen, Armie Hammer as Prince Andrew Alcott, and Nathan Lane as the hapless and bungling servant to the Queen. Relativity’s expansive 2012 slate also includes its House at the End of the Street (in theatres February 3, 2012), Untitled Raven Project (in theatres March 9, 2012), Untitled Farrelly/Wessler Project (in theatres April 13, 2012), Safe Haven (in theatres June 1, 2012) and Hunter Killer (in theatres December 21, 2012). The studio recently announced the groundbreaking action-thriller Act of Valor will join its 2012 slate, with an exact date to be announced.

Release Dates For ‘Oblivion’, ‘Savages’, ‘Haywire’, & ‘Despicable Me 2′
Written by Admin on July 3, 2011 · Leave a Comment

Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained turned out to be just the first upcoming cinematic venture from a (relatively) high-profile filmmaker to secure a release date this past week. Joining in are such projects as director Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion; Oliver Stone’s literary adaptation, Savages; and Steven Soderbergh’s star-studded thriller, Haywire.

Universal also set a release date for the sequel Despicable me 2, which looks to involve the same writing and producing talent from last year’s original film about the (reformed?) super-villain Gru (voice of Steve Carrell).

Oblivion will be Kosinski’s sophomore directorial effort, following last winter’s TRON: Legacy. the futuristic sci-fi adventure takes place in a post-alien invasion Earth where a drone repairman named Jak (Tom Cruise) discovers a mysterious woman who crash-landed on the planet’s inhospitable surface. this seemingly benign act sets off (according to the official synopsis) “an unstoppable chain of events” that could affect the survival of humankind.

Kosinski’s film is now set to reach theaters on July 19, 2013, several months after Neil Blomkamp’s own original humans vs. aliens project, Elysium, is slated for release. Oblivion will actually arrive first in comic book form, which could either help or hinder the potential success of its cinematic counterpart – depending on how well the graphic novel is received, naturally.

Despicable me 2 will arrive in theaters just over two weeks before Oblivion, on July 3rd, 2013. Illumination Entertainment now has two financial hits under its belt in the forms of the first Despicable Me and this past spring’s CGI/live-action hybrid, Hop. the company is clearly hoping to go four-for-four in the area of animated hits over the next two years, between the second Despicable me flick and next year’s Dr. Seuss adaptation, The Lorax.

Gru and his minions will return in 'Despicable me 2'

On the more awards-friendly side of things: Savages is now set to hit theaters on September 28, 2012. the film is an adaptation of Don Winslow’s best-selling dramatic drug crime/thriller novel that features rising stars like Aaron Johnson and Blake Lively – as well as established names such as John Travolta, Uma Thurman, and Salma Hayek – as members of its cast. Oliver Stone fans are hoping that this will be a return to form for the multiple Academy Award-winning filmmaker, following the so-so reception for his last two pictures (Wall Street: Money never Sleeps and W.).

Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire – an espionage thriller that stars real-life Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) star Gina Carano as a covert ops agent on the run – also boasts a top notch cast that includes the likes of Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, and Antonio Banderas, among others. However, the film is set to reach theaters on January 20th, 2012, which indicates that its distributor (Relativity) doesn’t have a whole lot of confidence in the final product.

So, to reiterate (in order): Haywire will hit U.S. theaters on January 20th, 2012.

Savages is set to arrive in theaters on September 28th, 2012.

Despicable me 2 will make its way into theaters on July 3rd, 2013. Oblivion will follow just over two weeks later, on July 19th.
