Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire trailer debuts
Ryan FlemingJuly 25, 2011

Director Steven Soderbergh returns with a spy story complete with betrayals, revenge and female MMA star Gina Carano.

Over the past two decades, Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh has become one of the most sought after and highly respected filmmakers working in the industry today. So when he puts out a casting call, the results are fairly impressive. In his next film Haywire, the plot will be familiar (which is a nice way of saying that it will be unoriginal), but an all-star cast paired with Soderbergh’s style should make Haywire into a highly anticipated film.

Haywire is the story of a spy played by MMA fighter Gina Carano. If we stopped right there, you could probably guess what the film was about. Take an actor or actress that is known for action, and have them play a spy. Inevitably a betrayal, an attempt on the spy’s life, and bloody payback follow in short in order.

This marks the fourth movie Carano will appear in, but the first time that she will be the lead in it. Helping her along will be Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender and Channing Tatum.

The first trailer was released last week at Comic-Con, which you can see below. Haywire will have its debut in Ireland where it was primarily filmed, on August 5, but it won’t hit most theaters until January 20, 2012.

Trailer Park: MMA Fighter Gina Carano Turns Ass-Kicking Spy In "Haywire"
By Chad Roberts, | Jul 25, 2011 | 5:29 pm

Do we have a new female action star on our hands? It appears so.

Much like how he mainstreamed porn star Sasha Grey in his independent flick The Girlfriend Experience, prolific director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, the Ocean's 11 movies, Che) took a risk in casting MMA standout Gina Carano for his latest flick; after seeing clips of in-ring bouts, he made it his mission to turn the pint-sized fighter into an action hero. The result: Haywire, which finds the mixed martial arts fighter starring as a spy who gets double-crossed by her cohorts and goes on a vengeful war-path. And the first trailer isn't half bad.

In the preview, Carano man-handles several dudes, including co-star Channing Tatum, with a barrage of kneeing, elbowing, and arm-bars to bore you; int he way of actual acting, though, there's very little on display. Aesthetically, Haywire feels like every other spy-fights-back-against-traitors film, but the cast here is too badass to write off. Aside from Tatum, Soderbergh recruited the great Michael Fassbender (Magneto in X-Men: First Class, though it looks like he dies swiftly here) Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, and Bill Paxton.

Will Carano's first-time acting chops make or break Soderbergh's latest? We'll find out when Haywire opens on January 20, 2012.

‘Haywire’ Trailer: Another Curious Casting Decision By Steven Soderbergh
By Matt Kiebus Monday, July 25, 2011

Mixed martial artist Gina Carano makes her “acting” debut as a rogue black ops agent in a female “Jason Bourne” imitation.

This weekend Academy Award winning director Steven Soderbergh released the first trailer for his new film “Haywire” at Comic Con in San Diego. Along with “Contagion,” this is the second trailer Soderbergh has released in the past month. The “Traffic” and “Ocean’s 11” director has always been one of the best in the industry in balancing big budget studio films and smaller passion projects. For every big budget film like “Ocean’s 13” or “Erin Brockovich,” we get “Che” and ‘The Girlfriend Experience.”

Most critics consider Soderbergh to be one of the greatest directors working today and at the age of 48 he has plenty of great years ahead of him — that is of course if he doesn’t retire like he threatened to back in March.

“Haywire” appears to be Soderbergh’s attempt at a Jason Bourne film, only substituting Academy Award winner Matt Damon for MMA star Gina Carano. Yes, I said MMA star. For the second time in as many years Soderbergh is experimenting with a non-actress female lead: First porn star Sasha Grey in “The Girlfriend Experience,” and now Carano in “Haywire.”

The film is actually laden with A-List talent in Michael Fassbender, Michael Douglas, Ewen McGregor, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxon and Channing Tatum, which makes the Carano casting choice all the more confusing. Soderbergh wouldn’t simply cast her because she could do her own stunts, would he?

The trailer shows a film we’ve all seen a million times over the past decade with the Bourne trilogy, “Salt,” “Shooter” etc. And it doesn’t appear as though the A-list supporting cast can save the film from Carano’s utter lack of any acting ability.

Gina Carano To Star In Steven Soderbergh’s “Haywire” (Trailer)

Gina Carano is set to make her big screen debut in a Steven Soderbergh film titled “Haywire,” and if you thought this movie would be a success solely because men would flock to the theaters just to get a glimpse of the sexy former MMA star, think again.

Okay, so perhaps many men will have Carano’s gorgeous face and sexy body on their mind when they get in line to buy a ticket to “Haywire,” which is set to hit theaters on January 20, 2012. However, one look at the trailer, along with a cast that includes the likes of Channing Tatum, Ewan MacGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas, may have you believing that this movie would be watchable even if it were staring Rosie O’Donnell.

Okay, perhaps that is a bit of a stretch, but if you figured there was no way a movie staring Carano could be a success, the trailer below will probably have you thinking otherwise.

Video Trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s “Haywire” Featuring Gina Carano
by Shawn M. Smith - July 25, 2011

With her absence from Women’s MMA the last two years, a great deal of star power has been missing from the sport. Now, we’ll finally get to see just what she stepped away from the game for in this trailer for Stephen Soderbergh’s “Haywire”.

Visit the website at www.HaywireMovie.com

This dynamic action-thriller directed by Oscar® winner Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) boasts a talented cast that includes Channing Tatum (GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra), Ewan McGregor (The Ghost Writer), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Antonio Banderas (The Legend of Zoro), Bill Paxton (“Big Love”), Michael Douglas (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), Michael Angarano (Almost Famous); and introduces mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Gina Carano as Mallory Kane, in a demanding lead role that has her performing her own high-adrenaline stunts.

Mallory Kane is a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who know her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive.

Using her black-ops military training, she devises an ingenious—and dangerous—trap. But when things go haywire, Mallory realizes she’ll be killed in the blink of an eye unless she finds a way to turn the tables on her ruthless adversary.

Haywire – Official Trailer
By: J. Pines

Attractive MMA fighter, Gina Carano, makes her big screen acting debut in Steven Soderbergh’s, Haywire. She plays an extremely skilled operative, who is double crossed during a mission and becomes a target, herself. She’s, then, forced to use her particular set of skills to fight of assassins and prove her innocence.

It’s sort of a Bourne Identity meets Salt situation, only starring a person who could probably do all the things her character does in the film. It also stars Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglass, Michael Fassbender, and Antonio Banderas? Really? I can’t see him playing a character aside from Zorro or El Mariachi anymore. You can’t spend the last 10 years doing animated voice work and expect me to believe you. It’s why I can’t take Gilbert Gottfried serious anymore. What a waste of acting talent.

Watch Channing Tatum and Michael Fassbender Get Beat Up by a Girl in the Haywire Trailer

Shannon Vestal / July 25, 2011 5:02 am

Steven Soderbergh's new film Haywire (previously known as Knockout) boasts a cast of well-known actors like Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, and Channing Tatum, but its central character is virtually unknown — unless you follow the world of mixed martial arts. MMA star Gina Carano has her first film role in Haywire as Mallory Kane, a former black-ops officer who was betrayed by her colleagues and has to go on the run. In her personal mission to figure out why she was sold out, she gets to beat the living crap out of those who are trying to stop her, like Fassbender and Tatum.

The trailer is action-heavy, and though I'm not super into fight scenes, it's intense to see Carano getting to go head-to-head and best the boys. The trailer was revealed at Comic-Con, but you can get a look at it when you read more.

Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire: the first trailer

Ryan Lambie

People are punched and cars are driven in the trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s forthcoming action thriller, Haywire...

Published on Jul 24, 2011

If you’ve ever idly wondered what would happen if you took the character of Lisbeth Salander out of the Millennium mystery movies, and stuck her in a high-kicking action thriller instead, Steven Soderbergh’s forthcoming Haywire may provide the answer.

A classy-looking vehicle for former MMA star Gina Carano, and an unexpected change of pace for Soderbergh, Haywire looks very much like a revenge thriller in the mould of The Long Kiss Goodnight, or one of those Bourne films. Carano stars as some sort of indestructible black ops commando who’s betrayed by the film’s male cast, who are then systematically beaten to a pulp for the next couple of hours. Bill Paxton, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor and Michael Fassbender are among the gentlemen who end up on the wrong side of Carano’s fists and feet.

It all looks great fun, in a ridiculous, high-octane kind of way, and looks like the kind of thing we’d have rented from Blockbuster in the 90s, though back then it probably would have had Jean Claude Van Damme or Chuck Norris on the box instead. We mean this as a compliment, by the way.

Haywire’s due out on the 20th January 2012. Until then, enjoy the new trailer below.

SAN DIEGO - "Haywire" is not the sort of movie most moviegoers expect from Steven Soderbergh, but the Oscar winner has had a pretty unconventional career. He'll bring the ensemble drama "Contagion" to theaters this fall, but January will find him shepherding the big screen debut of MMA fighter Gina Carano in the new Relativity Media release.

Speaking at Comic-Con International 2011 Friday, Soderbergh says he sparked to the idea of working with Carano after catching her during an MMA fight broadcast. He recalls, "I tuned in one night just out of curiosity and I literally thought, 'Why doesn't somebody build a movie around her?' I never saw someone perform like this in a cage."

Following a face-to-face with Carano in San Diego about two years ago, Soderbergh reached out to his "Limey" screenwriter Lem Dobbs about writing a female revenge movie in a similar star. Soderbergh says, "I felt it would be interesting and unusual if you could create a female character who performed physically for real and there was no cutting away and there were no doubles. I thought that would be fun to watch."

Soderbergh put an impressive cast around Carano including Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton and Antonio Banderas. Tatum, who like many of his male co-stars got into it with Carano on screen, joked he still might have some bruises from the shoot. Carano didn't cause any injuries on screen, but Tatum revealed she knocked someone out in rehearsal. The MMA fighter joked that Tatum asked her to kick him harder during their sparring sessions. All smiles, Tatum acknowledges, "It was a challenge and I lost. I have been a fan of Gina's for a long time. I follow MMA pretty adamantly and it was just a pleasure and an honor [to work with her]."

Tatum also noted, "In the beginning of the movie I have to hit her with a ketchup bottle. [It wasn't hard enough for her] and then she called me the female p-word and I had to do it [for real]. I had to do it for my mannity. So, I hit her and she hit me back twice as hard and that was that."

As for her big screen alter ego, Carano describes Mailory Cain as a special opps agents who "she just gets the job done and people want to work with her. She works for a private contractor and she starts getting double crossed and doesn't know who to trust and has to fight to get her life back."

If that sounds cliche, well so does the whole movie. However, Soderbergh has set up the flick to take advantage of Carano's strengths which is mostly her fighting skills. Therefore, it was refreshing to see an impressive fight scene that is teased in the trailer (Soderbergh says he was inspired by a moment in Robert Clouse's 1970 action thriller "Darker by Amber"). The sequence starts with Carano and Michael Fassbender returning from dinner in a posh hotel. The intelligence operatives are supposed to be prepping for a mission where they are posing as a married couple. The second they close the hotel room door, Fassbender strikes Carano behind the head and a full out brawl between the two ensues. Soderbergh increases the intensity by removing any music and just using the natural sound of the fight. And while they insisted it was all choreographed, when Fassbender's head gets in a number of choke holds it's hard fake all that blood rushing to his face. Obviously, he dies at the end at Carano's hands. As one scene, it was pretty effective.

Carano doesn't necessarily come across as a natural thespian, but she's the first to admit she's had a lot of catching up to do.

"I got acting 101 on my first movie with Steven," Carano says. "It ruined movie for a couple of months for me because I recognized everything [that was going on]. Now I appreciate actors that much more. I don't think everyone is capable of doing it."

"Haywire" was supposed to be one of Soderbergh's last films before his expected "retirement." The "Ocean's Eleven" helmer tried to dispel that rumor insinuating he wasn't leaving the film world any time soon.

"Matt Damon apparently is about as discrete as a 14-year-old girl," Soderbergh deadpans. "I had this drunken conversation with him while we were shooting 'Contagion.' And no one wants to hear in this economy about quitting a good job. It got blown out of proportion."

And so it goes.

"Haywire" opens nationwide on Jan. 20.

First Trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire

By Mike Lee • July 23, 2011

You know there will be some pretty exciting trailers to debut at this year’s Comic-Con, but not all of them are exclusive to attendees. So Relativity has debuted the trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire. Think of Haywire as the feminine Bourne Identity with Gina Carano playing Jason Bourne. But the MMA fighter isn’t alone, she is joined by a stellar cast that consists of Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Michael Angarano and Bill Paxton. With the action designed to be grounded, you can expect the fight scenes to be brutal. It may be a January release, but it could be an unexpected hit at the box office.

Haywire is directed by Steven Soderbergh with the script written by Lem Dobbs, the film tells a tale of espionage and betrayal. Haywire will hit theaters on January 20th, 2012.

Trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire

by Liam on July 23, 2011

haywire movie The first trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire has appeared online. The movie stars Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas and Bill Paxton, however they are all in supporting roles. The lead belongs to Gina Carano, a mixed martial arts fighter who, by the looks of things, can also act.

Watch below:

Beautiful freelance covert operative Mallory Kane is hired out by her handler to various global entities to perform jobs which governments can’t authorize and heads of state would rather not know about. After a mission to rescue a hostage in Barcelona, Mallory is quickly dispatched on another mission to Dublin. When the operation goes awry and Mallory finds she has been double crossed, she needs to use all of her skills, tricks and abilities to escape an international manhunt, make it back to the United States, protect her family, and exact revenge on those that have betrayed her

It’s quite refreshing to see a female-driven action film that doesn’t involve Angelina Jolie. Hiring a relative unknown was a risk (Soderbergh discovered Carano on a random Saturday when watching an MMA fight), so surrounding her with strong (and well known) supporting actors was a good move.

Haywire will be released by Relativity Media on January 20, 2012.

New Movie Trailer from Soderbergh's 'Haywire'

As you know, this is one of the last Steven Soderbergh films you will see. He will be missed but I think he's looking to go out with a bang. The new trailer for Haywire doesn't disappoint. It definitely has a ton of action filled with some of the hottest actors. I mean, the film star Gina Carano, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Bill Paxton, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, and Michael Douglas. Phew! That's a ton of stars.

Gina Carano is in MMA so it's pretty cool to have a legitimate martial artist playing the lead role. Haywire will release in theaters January 20th.

Relativity Media Unveils Haywire Trailer by Troy Rogers

[Haywire]
Ahead of the January 20, 2012 release of Haywire, Relativity Media unveiled a trailer for the Steven Soderbergh directed action movie, which stars Gina Carano as the baddest female ass-kicker we’ve ever seen.

In the new trailer for Haywire, viewers get to see an all star cast headed by Gina Carano who goes Haywire with Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Angarano, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, and Bill Paxton. In terms of action and intensity, Haywire offers a cool spin on the traditional action formula, with Carano in the lead role of a female special ops soldier who takes out anyone who gets in her way. Judging by the new trailer for Haywire, it looks like Jason Bourne has just met his match.

Check out the new preview of Haywire below and tell us what you think.

Steven Soderbergh's 'Haywire': Director Releases Second Trailer In Two Weeks At Comic-Con

First Posted: 7/22/11 07:41 PM ET Updated: 7/22/11 08:07 PM ET

Steven Soderbergh certainly knows how to create a buzz. Just last week, he released the trailer for his upcoming sci-fi/bird flu thriller "Contagion," which left us a little wanting. But not to worry -- if you didn't like the looks of that trailer, he's tossing us another one and seeing if it sticks. At Comic-Con on Friday, the director upped the ante with "Haywire," an action film set for release Jan. 20, 2012.

Gina Carano, actress and mixed martial arts fighter extraordinaire, stars as a black ops soldier who seeks revenge after she is set up, to die it seems. The film also stars Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum, Bill Paxton and Antonio Banderas. It's too ambiguous to say what their roles are ("good" or "bad") based off the trailer -- Carano owns it as the lone woman among men trying to thwart her. Anything that involves a woman betrayed kicking ass is as close as we'll ever get to "Alias" again, so needless to say, "Haywire" gets our vote in this Soderbergh vs. Soderbergh trailer showdown.

The first official trailer for Steven Soderbergh's Haywire has been released at Comic-Con 2011.

The two-and-a-half minute long clip takes us on the run with Mallory Kane (Gina Carano), a Covert Operative determined to get even following a messy 'divorce' from those who trained her to kill.

Channelling Bourne and Salt, Kane flees her botched Barcelona mission and attempts to evade authorities around the world to get back to her family in the US, delivering an A-list ass-kicking to the likes of Channing Tatum and Ewan McGregor along the way.

The star-studded promo also teases us with glimpses of Antonio Banderas and Michael Fassbender, while Michael Douglas and Bill Paxton appear as two shady types whose motivations for betraying Kane are sure to be unravelled throughout the film.

Haywire is due for release in the US on January 20, 2012, although a UK date has yet to be set.

Watch the trailer for Haywire below.

Haywire Trailer: Steven Soderbergh Made a Bourne Movie

7/22/11 at 6:00 PM

When Angelina Jolie's Salt — a.k.a. the Bourne movie with a chick — came out last summer, Vulture dutifully noted all the other iterations that the Bourne movies have undergone. There was one iteration left off the list, though, and that was: another Bourne movie with a chick! Just revealed today at Comic-Con was the trailer for Steven Soderbergh's Haywire, which stars MMA fighter Gina Carano as some sort of lethal secret agent, betrayed and on the run and totally, utterly kicking ass (she does not, however, lose her memory). Not that there's anything wrong with that: As far as Vulture is concerned, there's always room for more movies where one person in the movie punches everyone else in the movie. More worrying: While the supporting roster (Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas, Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas) is ridiculous and the fight scenes are on point, there's something just a bit off here. Maybe it's the hokey voiceover, or the presence of that Britney Spears circa 2003 newsboy cap, but, things feel just a touch B-movie-ish. By the way, how much does Steven Soderbergh love casting non-professional female leads?

Haywire Trailer Will Beat You Silly
By Damon Houx

The story of Haywire is familiar. Government agent goes on an appointment and ends up betrayed. But the players are exciting. Steven Soderberg reteaming with The Limey screenwriter Lem Dobbs. Newcomer Gina Carano going face to face with Michael Fassbender, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor and Bill Paxton. Though the January release date doesn’t inspire confidence, it’s trying to be 2012′s Taken. And it looks to deliver. Check out the trailer…

The main question mark seems to be Carano, as she was a professional fighter in MMA, but this is the big leagues. But Soderberg is usually smart in his casting, it seems unlikely he didn’t think she could handle it. It’s also nice to see a good looking action movie that doesn’t star Jason Statham or Sylvester Stallone. So much of the summer action can also fall into the sci-fi fantasy genres, which means less actual hand to hand combat and more CGI stunts.

Soderberg’s panel at comic-con went well, so we’re in the build for the film’s release, and the first official trailer does create some excitement about the project. We’re still a ways out and Soderberg’s got Contagion in the can and ready for a September release. As Soderberg said at the con, the rumors of his retirement have been greatly exaggerated.

What do you think of this trailer?

SDCC TRAILER: First look at Soderbergh’s HAYWIRE
Jason Tabrys July 22, 2011

So I’m thinking to myself, “Jason, you don’t expect to see a talent like Steven Soderbergh direct a movie that winds up in the January dump bin do you?” And I’m like “No,” yet there HAYWIRE is.

Sure the film is a somewhat predictable concept, another BOURNE clone (hell even BOURNE is a BOURNE clone now), but the cast is stellar with Michael Fassbender, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Ewan McGregor, and Channing Tatum surrounding MMA star Gina Carano, a former American Gladiator trying to breakout as an action star. No I just couldn’t put my finger on the “why’s” of the burn off and then I saw the trailer.

Let me know what you think, but to me this is all about Carino’s wooden acting (which actually makes Tatum’s that much more noticeable), and the script by Lem Dobbs, who hasn’t written a film in 10 years (THE SCORE), and hasn’t written a good one since 1999′s LIMEY. One man’s opinion, read the synopsis, watch the trailer and give me my comeuppance in the comments section if you feel its warranted or you’re just feeling cross.

Synopsis:

‘Haywire’ Trailer: Realistic Fighting, Standard Plot
Jul 22, 2011 by Sandy Schaefer

The trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Haywire’ shows off MMA star Gina Carano’s impressive butt-kickin’ skills, but otherwise looks like a generic secret agent thriller.

Relativity Media’s Comic-Con panel offered attendees an early look at two of its upcoming action-oriented titles, including Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh’s new thriller, Haywire.

The official trailer for Haywire has emerged online, providing everyone who couldn’t make it to this year’s ‘Con with an early look at Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) star Gina Carano’s screen debut as a kick-ass government operative.

Haywire joins Contagion as one of two directorial efforts from Soderbergh (who has assured fans his retirement in NOT imminent, as was previously rumored) that will be hitting theaters over the next six months. So, does the filmmaker’s next full-fledged action romp look like a winner?

Check out the official Haywire plot synopsis and trailer below to find out:

Mallory Kane (Carano) is a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world.

Give Carano credit -- not only can she realistically pull off a variety of martial arts stunts and fighting moves like no one else on film, it’s all the more fun watching her take down powerful-looking fellows like Channing Tatum and Michael Fassbender in this trailer. There’s no indication yet that Carano will be the most expressive actress, but given the nature of her character in Soderbergh’s film, it’s not exactly a role that requires her to be anything but convincingly robotic.

Beyond scenes of Carano kickin’ some serious butt, though, there’s not a whole lot on display in this Haywire footage that really leaves a strong impression. This preview essentially makes the movie look like most deadly-government-agent-on-the-run flicks that have been made (see: Salt, The Bourne Identity, the first Mission: Impossible, etc.). Between the generic voiceover narration and the familiar plot points, this Haywire trailer feels like something we’ve seen many times before -- much like the preview for Soderbergh’s Contagion (see: Screen Rant‘s own Contagion/Outbreak trailer mashup).

Haywire does have the added benefit of great supporting stars like Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, and Bill Paxton; plus, the film was scripted by Lem Dobbs, the writer behind Soderbergh’s The Limey and Frank Oz’s The Score, two solid thrillers in their own right. It’s also rare for Soderbergh to deliver a film that’s either really conventional, bland, or straight-up bad, so maybe Haywire will ultimately prove to be more memorable than the trailer suggests.

Haywire is slated for theatrical release on January 20th, 2012.

SDCC 2011: 'Haywire' Trailer Will Make Your Mind Sizzle

So, here's what I can tell so far about Haywire...

American Gladiator/MMA fighter Gina Cararo is a walking lethal weapon who the government employs to carry out some covert opp, then tries to kill. Simple enough, right? NO WAY. Maybe it's the cinematography, the stunts, the music, the inclusion of Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor and Antonio Banderas...but something about this trailer makes this movie seem like it's going to be twisting and turning in every conceivable (and otherwise) direction, taking our brains, hearts and adrenal glands on a bumper-car dragrace through an avalanche-tornado.

Watch Trailer For Steven Soderbergh’s Actioner “Haywire” Starring MMA Star Gina Carano

No, there’s nobody black in it (at least not in any of the starring roles), but I generally like Steven Soderbergh’s work, and this is maybe one of the more intriguing films he’s done. I don’t think of him as an action-director, and this looks like an action movie - at least, from the trailer I embedded below. We all know that trailers do lie sometimes. For all we know, this could be some Ingmar Bergman-style meditative piece on life and death… but probably not! Smile

I’m curious to see what Soderbergh does with the material, and the cast is certainly nothing to sneeze at: Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Bill Paxton, Michael Douglas, and introducing Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) superstar Gina Carano in her feature film debut.

A preview of the film was screened at Comic-Con (going on right now), which reportedly wowed audiences; and the first full trailer has surfaced, which you can watch below. Haywire will in theaters next January:

Soderbergh's Haywire Trailer

Soderbergh's Haywire Trailer image

SDCC is in full swing and continues to feed us hot, fresh information direct from the source--the filmmakers. Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s 11, The Informant) arrived to show off this flashy new trailer for his upcoming action thriller Haywire. The film stars MMA powerhouse Gina Carano, or Crush from the latest iteration of American Gladiators, who is a government killing machine, betrayed by her handlers and left for dead.

Shockingly (read: obviously), she’s not dead and is out for blood against those who have wronged her. Scope out the trailer below.

The flick also stars Channing Tatum, Ewan MacGregor, Michael Fassbender, Michale Douglas, and a host of others. Soderbergh is no stranger to ensemble casts though, so expect this to be a well managed cast of characters.

Earlier this year, the Ocean’s 11 director announced on Rich Eisen’s podcast that he’d be retiring from filmmaking. At 48 years old and at the top of his game, it was hard for us to buy that he’d just walk away. In April it was announced that he’d be directing a film called Magic Mike with Channing Tatum. Taking on more work doesn’t sound like something a quitting director would do.

At the Haywire panel this afternoon, a Q&A session was held and a fan asked about his alleged retirement. Apparently Soderbergh never meant his comments to mean that he was quitting, and he was not psyched to still be hearing that the rumor was still floating around. With three films in pre-production, one in post, and one nearing release, it seems like that should be enough to prove that he’s still working, and still enjoying himself.

Haywire looks like it will be big fun when it releases January 20, 2012, and if it’s not, then well you spent $10 to look at Gina Carano for two hours, and there are worse ways to spend a Saturday afternoon.
