First Look Footage From Steve McQueen’s “Shame” + Venice Press Conference

Well, whadaya know… another Shame post. Get used to it, those who apparently are troubled by our coverage of it, ‘cause, I’ll be honest with ya, there’ll be a lot more I’m sure.

This time it’s the post-Venice Film Festival press conference (where the film made its debut yesterday), with director Steve McQueen and star Michael Fassbender on the mic. And, as the title of this post states, beginning at around the 2:30 mark, you’ll see what I believe is the very first footage of the film to show up online; not much, only about a minute’s worth.

Watch: Two Minute, Blondie-Aided Clip For Steve McQueen’s ‘Shame’ With Michael Fassbender

The best films aren’t necessarily the ones you walk out of raving about, but the ones that haunt you, lingering on your mind for the days, weeks and months afterwards. When we saw “Shame,” Steve McQueen‘s follow up to his debut “Hunger,” which reteams the director with star Michael Fassbender, we liked it very, very much indeed, but had a few issues with it that perhaps stopped it from reaching the very top tier of films we saw in Venice.

In the few weeks since, the problems haven’t gone away (and may be more glaring on a second viewing), but it’s such an immaculately made, thought-provoking picture, dealing with themes so rarely dealt with on screen in such a mature manner, that it’s been on our mind a lot, particularly after seeing some of the debate that it’s raised after screening in Telluride and Toronto. It’s the sign of a film that touches on greatness, and we look forward to more and more people seeing it and adding their thoughts too.

With Fox Searchlight picking up the film, and likely to release it before the end of the year, we should be seeing more official marketing materials soon enough, but in the meantime, hot on the heels of the first clip, another, more substantial look at the film has emerged. It’s not giving a ton away, but does showcase a little of the excellent supporting turn by “The Pacific” star James Badge Dale, as the boyishly horndog boss of Fassbender’s character Brendan, and it’s scored to Blondie‘s “Rapture,” which is never a bad thing. Watch the clip below, and keep your eyes peeled for more news of the film’s release soon.

This new clip from Shame isn't spoiler material but it does give you a good look at Michael Fassbender's character Brandon and James Badge Dale as his character's boss, David. You'll see how David is more of a frat boy type, walking around with a hard on, while Brandon is calm, cool and collected as well as quite attentive. However, what I like most is what's left unsaid in this clip and how Brandon goes from the shy mysterious type to the steely eyed Patrick Bateman type, never entirely giving much away. Had the clip continued for another 1-2 minutes you would learn even more about Brandon's sexually obsessed character, but I think this is good enough.

Shame was picked up by Fox Searchlight Pictures out of Toronto and will be hitting theaters some time in December with an expectation for a big Best Actor push for Fassbender. Check out the clip below and if you want more you can read my review out of Toronto here or check out another clip and several images from the film here.

Brandon (Fassbender) is a 30-something man living in New York who is unable to manage his sex life. After his wayward younger sister (Mulligan) moves into his apartment, Brandon's world spirals out of control. From director Steve McQueen (Hunger), Shame is a compelling and timely examination of the nature of need, how we live our lives and the experiences that shape us.

Shame: world exclusive trailer - video

Shame, directed by Steve McQueen and starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan, tells the story of Brandon (Fassbender), a single man who is addicted to sex in any form as long as it does not involve love or intimacy. His ordered lifestyle is thrown into chaos with the arrival of his needy sister (Mulligan).

Video: LFF 2011 – Steve McQueen and Michael Fassbender at Shame Press Conference
October 14, 2011 By Jon Lyus

I saw Shame this morning at the London Film Festival and it hasn’t left my mind for a moment since.

It is powerful filmmaking from a director whose deft touch and innate intelligence and understanding of how to render emotional states on screen makes this a worthy follow up to his debut film, Hunger, which also benefited from the magnetic screen presence of Michael Fassbender.

My review will be up on the site shortly, you may have seen that we posted the first trailer for the film which was released earlier today and we’ve been sent a link to edited highlights of the press conference held this morning following the screening I was at.

It’s a fascinating watch and interesting to see the considerations which went into the film. Shame is out on the 13th of January next year – make sure you have that date in your diary. Here’s the video,

Michael Fassbender trailer has little 'Shame' [Video]
October 14, 2011 | 12:48 pm

“Shame” has been a major standout on the fall festival circuit and is one of the most anticipated movies of this coming season. Steve McQueen’s auteur piece — Fox Searchlight releases it on Dec. 2 — stars Michael Fassbender as a sex addict who can’t emotionally connect with women; he tosses from the room a potential girlfriend without having sex with her, for instance, and instead calls a prostitute.

But you wouldn’t exactly know the movie is about sex addiction from a new trailer. In fact, you wouldn’t know much about it at all.

There’s the vague insinuation that Fassbender’s character has looked at some Internet porn and a sense generally of a man tortured. But there's almost no actial sex in the trailer — and what little sex there is comes off as the far more functional variety.

Instead, the emphasis is on a family relationship between Fassbender’s character and Carey Mulligan’s chanteuse, an important piece of the film but hardly its sole focus. And it's all interspersed wth unrevealing shots (in more ways than one) of Fassbender's character jogging through the New York streets.

To be fair, it is a Herculean task to cut a spot for this movie, which is all but assured an NC-17 rating.

"Man who can only have sex that’s kinky and with prostitutes" doesn’t scream Saturday night date movie. And clearly marketers don't want to exclude postings on mainstream sites (like this one). Still, it's fun to think about the people who will see the movie only off this trailer. If some "Drive" filmgoers were in for a surprise...

Check Out Michael Fassbenber In “Shame”
Filed under: Movies, Tyrell, Videos Author: Tyrell Date: Oct 14, 2011

Director Steve McQueen is ready to bring us another dark and twisted drama with his newest film, Shame. Winner of the Best Actor and Critic’s Choice at the 2011 Venice Film Festival, the film stars the sexy Michael Fassbender and Academy Award nominee, Carey Mulligan. Check out a quick synopsis below.

Brandon is a 30-something man living in New York who is unable to manage his sex life. After his wayward younger sister moves into his apartment, Brandon’s world spirals out of control. From director Steve McQueen (Hunger), Shame is a compelling and timely examination of the nature of need, how we live our lives and the experiences that shape us.

What’s got everyone talking is the fact that Fassbender goes full frontal for the film. Aside from that, the film takes a real dark look at the world of a sex addict and many are describing the scenes as being quite graphic. However, in true McQueen fashion, I’m sure the film will show that sense of realness that he’s famous for. I cannot wait to check it out. Watch the trailer for Shame below.

“SHAME” MOVIE TRAILER

“Shame” will open in the UK on January 13, 2012 but in the US, you’ll be able to catch a look at it beginning December 2nd, 2011. Will be checking out “Shame” in theaters?
