'Average' Fassbender finds acting grove
Friday, September 09, 2011 » 04:16pm
'Jane Eyre' actor Michael Fassbender said he's lucky he's had success as he was 'average' at other things.
Michael Fassbender is now one of the hottest leading actors in Hollywood - but told Sky News he feels 'lucky' things worked out as he was a 'pretty average' at everything else.
Since his breakthrough role as Bobby Sands in Steve McQueen's 2008 film Hunger, the German-Irish actor's career has exploded.
But at 34 success has come relatively late for him, and he said that at times he questioned whether it would ever happen.
'The doubts and demons creep into your head and you sort of think 'well what else could I do?'
'I went to acting school so I did not have a back up, I never went to university.'
'You hope things happen and I was lucky they did.'
This year he stars in five feature-length films - two of which have premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
A new adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's book Jane Eyre opens in cinemas this weekend, in which Fassbender plays the tortured Edward Rochester.
He admitted he was nervous after previous film adaptations featured the likes of Orson Welles and William Hurt in the role.
'There is a healthy dose of fear involved because it has been dealt with by so many proficient performers,' he told Sky News.
'But I thought why not give it a go and take on the challenge - and that is what excites me about doing jobs.'
Alice in Wonderland actress Mia Wasikowska plays Jane in director Cary Fukunaga's adaptation - which also stars Dame Judi Dench as housekeeper Mrs Fairfax
Wasikowska had nothing but praise for her co-star who she described as a 'brilliant actor'.
Fassbender said he likes to take on 'complicated' characters and will not be opting for any 'formulaic' Hollywood films.
He was recently seen on the red carpet in Venice with Keira Knightley and Viggo Mortensen promoting film A Dangerous Method in which he portrays psychologist Carl Jung.
But it is his role as a sex addict in Steve McQueen's Shame that has got people talking and led critics to tip him to get the Best Actor award at the festival.
He told Sky News the response in Venice was 'breathtaking' and to be honoured would be 'fantastic'.
He added: 'Those things make you feel very humbled and privileged.'
But even Fassbender admitted that the film, which also stars Carey Mulligan, is 'hard to watch'.
It graphically portrays the life of Brandon, a single man in his thirties who lives in New York and is addicted to sex.
Fassbender said the subject is very 'relevant'.
'It is the like elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about,' he said.
'It was amazing to see that people sort of accepted it. Sometimes when you show that to people they make a run for it, put up fences against it, do not want to face it.'
Fassbender has just finished filming Ridley Scott's prequel to the Alien films, Prometheus.
But one of his future projects could see him doing something completely different. He revealed he would like to combine his love of singing with acting.
'I was speaking to Steve , we were saying we got to do a musical at some point.
'I do enjoy singing and dancing,' he said, 'So, yes, why not.'
