The future of Greece may be in doubt these days, but its past is looking pretty good to Warner Bros. Insiders tell Vulture that the studio is entering into talks with Aussie Joel Edgerton (Warrior, Animal Kingdom) to star in 300: Battle of Artemisia, the sequel to the studio's super-stylized 2006 hit. (Noam Murro, who last made the very anti-action flick Smart People, is set to direct; original 300 director Zack Snyder is co-writing the script based on Frank Miller's upcoming graphic-novel sequel.)

If a deal is reached, Edgerton — most recently seen in the prequel to John Carpenter’s The Thing, and currently engaging in old-tyme fisticuffs with Tobey Maguire in Baz Luhrmann's Great Gatsby — would play Themosticles, the famed archon and general who led the Greeks to victory against the invading Persians in 480 BCE. So, if you're keeping score at home: Battle of Artemesia will likely star an Australian as the Greek general who brought about the defeat of the Persian navy, all under the direction of an Israeli Jew working for an American producer. World peace can’t be too far off, can it?

Rodrigo Santoro To Return As Xerxes In '300: Battle Of Artemisia'
News by Kevin Jagernauth | March 16, 2012 11:28 AM

Update: Deadline confirms that Santoro will be back as Xerxes and "300: Battle Of Artemisia" will shoot this summer. Santoro and Eva Green will pair up as the bad guys in this one.

So, that "300: Battle Of Artemisia" movie is still rolling along, with the most randomly assembled cast ever, including Sullivan Stapleton (Craig Cody from "Animal Kingdom"), some guy you never heard of named Jamie Blackley, and the gorgeous Eva Green. You know, if Warner Bros. shut down "Arthur And Lancelot" for being a big budget movie, starring nobodies, you would think this would be next. Guess not. Anyway, it continues to move along, and at least one recognizable face from the first movie may be back.

Rodrigo Santoro recently chatted with Collider, and confirmed he was circling the movie. "We are talking about it. Let’s see what happens. It’s a long story, my friend. A long story," he said. Details on the Kurt Johnstad and Zack Snyder penned script have been kept under wraps, but it seems the plot will criss-cross with the events of "300" as it takes place before and after (which certainly seems to gel with reports last year that the story would span ten years).

"The movie is set at the same time. The idea is to show another point of view. While that battle from the first '300' is taking place, there were others going on…Actually, it’s all of this and then there is an intersection point with the first movie. It goes back and then goes beyond that. That was the initial concept," he explained, seeming to suggest the story is still being worked out. But that does seem to indicate the hints that Gerard Butler and Lena Headey may reprise thier roles, essentially as cameos, are likely accurate.

No word yet on when the Noam Murro directed movie will roll, but it looks like they are slowly but surely getting the cast in place, so don't worry, greased up and sweaty men will be yelling homoerotically at a multiplex near you sometime soon.

THE NEWS BUNDLE: Eva Green Reveals Details on Her Titular Character in '300: Battle for Artemisia'
Posted by CamArruda Wednesday, May 2, 2012 11:43 AM

Details on the upcoming follow-up 300: Battle of Artemisia has been incredibly scarce so far. With one cast member dropping out, the small cast has become even smaller. Now, with Dark Shadows set for released next Friday, press junkets will undoubtedly feature one of the stars of the sequel Eva Green. Today, Green was interviewed, and actually unveiled a little bit about her character. Luckily enough, the name is all that's really needed to expand upon the details.

Speaking with MTV, Green said "Oh yeah, I’m playing Artemisia. She really existed actually. She was commander on a boat, of a whole Armada. She’s a very ballsy character, she’s almost like a man, so that’s fun. It’s my first action film, it’s going to be a challenge, [there will be] lots of training."

Now, Greek lore places Artemisia at the right hand of Xerxes (who will be played by Rodrigio Santoro), who she counseled as he went to rule most of the Greek coalition:

"The only one of his commanders to be female, Artemisia counselled the Persian king Xerxes to coordinate a joint land-sea offensive. She wanted the Persian army to march to the Isthmus of Corinth and attack the Greek coalition that was fortifying there, while moving the fleet to attack the Greek triremes. In this, Artemisia hoped that the Greek ships would scatter to their city-states, leaving them vulnerable to an intact Persian fleet. Xerxes refused this plan, instead moving to attack the assembled Greek fleet at Salamis. Artemisia participated in the Battle of Salamis in September, 480 BC as a Persian ally commanding five ships."

"Artemisia convinced Xerxes to retreat back to Asia Minor after the defeat at Salamis, contrary to the advice of Mardonius, who wanted Xerxes to stay. Xerxes then sent her to Ephesus to take care of his sons. In return, Artemisia's lands did well by their alliance with the Persians."

Now, it's unclear how this will change within the confines of the film, but hearing that Green is essentially the head villain due to the titular nature, and even somewhat pulling the strings of the antagonist from 300, it certainly places her in the main role. It's unclear how this will clash with Thermistocles, though as a Greek warrior and anti-hero, the description of Artemisia's past certainly seems to point it in the right direction.

Directed by Noam Murro, the film includes Green, Santoro, and Sullivan Stapleton, as actor Jamie Blackley was dropped from the film as Callisto with an unnamed actor stepping in. Production is scheduled to begin later this year for a release on August 2nd, 2013.
