The rise and rise of Michael Fassbender

Fassbender was until lately one of those familiar faces who pop up in television drama; you know the face but can't place him. Well we're glad to say that's no longer the case. Having come to widespread attention in last year's Hunger, Fassbender found himself with the Hollywood A list in Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and in critically acclaimed British indie Fish Tank. Having put in two of the best performances of the year, he's definitely one to watch out for in the future.

Producing is Blast! Films, who were responsible for the Bobby Sands/IRA drama Hunger that won a BAFTA and IFTA (Ireland's films awards) last year and was a career-maker for Michael Fassbender in the lead role.

Honestly, the only risk I can see with picking Fassbender for The Riddler is his relative anonymity amongst mainstream moviegoers, despite having a starring role in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" this year. Still, I think Fassbender's lack of public baggage is an asset to the actor and would only make his transformation into The Riddler all the more authentic.

Yes, he got lots of acclaim last year for playing Bobby Sands in Hunger, but, whilst that film was disappointing, he came into his own this year. A double header in the form of a brilliant job in Inglourious Basterds as a straight up English officer with a funky German accent, funny and interesting, and then playing a smooth, charismatic, yet darkly weird Irishman in Fish Tank, where he wooed a woman, then set his eyes on the 15 year old daughter, seemingly fatherly, sweet and innocent, but, of course, it being in Essex it can't last in innocence for too long, none of us do...

But he was a higherlight in both films, films swarming with highlights, and the more I watch Basterds, the more I enjoy his performance.

Also on hand were actress Amy Ryan, who presented to Waltz, James Gandolfini, who accepted the screenplay award for the movie “In the Loop,” “Basterds” actor Michael Fassbender (on the verge of being a big, big deal)

--The guy from the Gold Office or wherever who offers Bond that “rather disappointing brandy” has the coolest English accent ever. Well, until Michael Fassbender said, “Well, if this is it, old boy, I for one am going to go out speaking the King’s” in Inglourious Basterds, but records are meant to be broken.

Quentin Tarantino’s best movie since Jackie Brown was Inglorious Basterds, mostly on the strength of that incredible saloon scene with Michael Fassbender. Speaking of Michael Fassbender: Hunger, about imprisoned IRA leader Bobby Sands, was a flawed but striking feature debut for video artist Steve McQueen.

See Fish Tank ASAP
For some reasons why, check City Arts.

With 300, Hunger, Inglourious Basterds and Fish Tank behind and Jonah Hex, Centurion, Jane Eyre and Knockout straight ahead, I'm not even going out on a limb when I say Michael Fassbender is the next big thing.

http://schauspieler.suite101.de/article.cfm/der-deutsch-irische-schauspieler-michael-fassbender

translated:

Michael Fassbender divides his time acting conscientiously in an entertaining Hollywood movies and ambitious artistic films. He is versatile, attractive, profound, slightly mysterious and full of passion for his profession. With these qualities he is on the verge of stepping in the footsteps of British stars such as the already mentioned Christian Bale and Daniel Craig. His penetrating gaze that combines certain fragility, melancholy and yearning, which already accounted for James Dean, while he also emotions such as anger, determination and pride inviolable able to put into it. He proved, especially in the haunting 20-minute dialogue with the priest in "Hunger," in which he defended his plan of hunger strikes and vehemently with Insbrunst.

Certainly Michael Fassbender will soon be one of the important names in Hollywood, to those that determine the maintenance industry, and yet stand for quality. Maybe he will eventually hold an Oscar in his hands and maybe he will do in his acceptance speech, a few German words. Another time, we can be proud of the then German great actors, whose careers are at least a little bit much rooted in this country.

The only reason Love & Other Drugs isn’t a truly great film is the problem of Jake Gyllenhaal, an actor who I adored when he was younger and who has me more and more perplexed over time. On paper, he is a great choice. Young, dumb, and full of cum. But he needs to evolve in this story. And while he does okay with the role, you just never get the kind of light out of him that seeps out of Hathaway’s every pore. Ruffalo might have been the right guy, though he is a little older now. It could have been the role of Ryan Reynolds’ career, though we have never seen him quite hit this note. The one who might have turned this film into a classic would have been Michael Fassbender. The role is Jerry Maguire, in many ways. Cruise is now too iconic (and too old) to make it feel real.
