Five films that flesh out Michael Fassbender

It's not as if Michael Fassbender hasn't tried to do a comedy. "I went up for one, Dinner for Schmucks," he says, referring to a 2010 farce. "Obviously I wasn't funny enough." Or maybe not shmucky enough. But most of his films fall either in the action or dramatic category. For those who are still getting to know Fassbender, check out these titles.

Abs make the slayer in '300,' in which MIchael Fassbender stars as Stelios.

Abs make the slayer in '300,' in which MIchael Fassbender stars as Stelios.

300 (2006)
Perhaps you didn't notice Fassbender's super slayer Stelios amid all the violence and chiseled physiques. But you can catch up in a hurry on YouTube.

Hunger (2008)
A grueling, honest portrait of IRA prisoners with a devastating performance by Fassbender, who wastes away before your eyes as hunger-strike leader Bobby Sands. Directed by Shame's Steve McQueen.

REVIEW: Fassbender mesmerizes in 'Shame'

Eden Lake (2008)
A British horror film featuring Fassbender as the male half of a vacationing couple whose getaway at a remote lake turns into a nightmare when they are terrorized by a gang of teenagers.

Fish Tank (2009)
Fassbender revealed his talent for making an unappealing character sympathetic — in this case, as a seductive older man who befriends the troubled teen daughter of his latest conquest and ends up taking advantage of her.

Inglorious Basterds (2010)
Fassbender held his own with the likes of a barely recognizable Mike Myers and Brad Pitt as the veddy British Lt. Archie Hicox. The tense sequence where he goes undercover as a German officer in a bar is one of the highlights of a crowded film.
