Forget the Oscar, now Michael misses out on Kerry honour

Thursday January 26 2012

HE missed out on bagging an Oscar nomination -- now Irish actor Michael Fassbender has been beaten by a Government minister to Kerry Person of the Year.

The 34-year-old missed out on a nod for Best Actor at the Oscars despite being hotly tipped by critics to land a place in the prestigious category for his role as a sex addict in film Shame.

Now the heartthrob, who was reared in Killarney, has suffered further defeat, after Minister for Arts Jimmy Deenihan won the title of Kerry's Person of the Year for 2012.

Maura Hughes, Chairman of the Kerry Association in Dublin, told the Herald that while Fassbender is a local hero, he cannot be put forward for the gong because he wasn't born in the Kingdom.

"He has been considered in the past, but because he wasn't actually born in Kerry he can't be nominated. Voters never suggested him anyway funnily enough.

"We're always looking at our constitution to make changes so I would like to see a move that nominees don't necessarily have to be born in the county," she said.

The award, which recognises Kerry natives who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in their working and private lives, has been previously won by the likes of footballing legend Paidi O Se and RTE presenter Daithi O Se, who scooped the crown in 2010.

Michael, who got his big break in the business with a part in the movie Hunger, was born in Heidelberg in Germany, but moved to Ireland as a toddler with his parents Josef and Adele.

The actor and his older sister Catherine attended a local school in the town of Fossa and the rising superstar grew up playing football with Fossa GAA Club. He was also an altar boy in the local church and worked in his parents' restaurant.

Maura admitted that she would love to present Michael with a prize for making his home fans proud.

"We're always looking to support him and it would be nice to have an award for the Biggest Export or something for him.

"Kerry people adore Michael, for someone of his calibre to be left out of the Oscars is such a disappointment. We all thought he'd get it," she added.

Michael, who is of Irish and German parentage, has spoken about taking his mother as his date to the Oscar award ceremony at the Kodak Theatre next month.
