Michael Fassbender talks A Dangerous Method – and confirms he wants to play James Bond

Michael Fassbender, who plays Carl Jung in A Dangerous Method, has talked to STV about why his character gets involved in a torrid affair with Keira Knightley’s Sabina Spielrein – and also discussed rumours about him playing James Bond.

A Dangerous Method, which is out now in cinemas, looks at how the intense relationship between Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) gives birth to psychoanalysis, with Keira Knightley’s Sabina Spielrein caught in the middle.

So why was Michael – who has shot to fame in a string of high-profile movie roles over the past couple of years – interested in appearing in the David Cronenberg movie?

Michael told STV’s Grant Lauchlan: “I think the idea that makes Jung really interesting for me was that he said ‘How can I diagnose the patient if I don’t experience what the patient is experiencing?’ This encompasses the passion that he had.

“It was interesting for me, because I was playing him in a section of his life, so you have a young man who’s ambitious, who feels like he has got a lot to prove in this field, there’s elements of insecurity there.

“Then you see footage of Jung, which you see on YouTube, when he’s in his 60s and 70s, and you see somebody who from what I could gather was self-assured in his work, confident, at ease, charming, and still had this ego that he was on to something much more relevant than Freud.”

Michael said he found humour in the script, and added: “Viggo did explore that when we were doing scenes.

“It’s nice. I think when you’re doing quite high-brow stuff, and the world of academia and psychoanalysis, to find those moments of humour is good.”

Grant also asked him about rumours he is up for the role of James Bond should Daniel Craig depart the series. Michael said he doesn’t want to be dancing on anyone’s grave, while Daniel is shooting Skyfall, but added that “of course you’d consider it”.

He also explained that it would as with anything else depend on script and a director, but said “James Bond was a massive influence for my generation, and being a boy at that time”. Sounds like a yes to us...
