Michael Fassbender Eyes Co-Starring With Natalie Portman In Lynne Ramsay's Western 'Jane Got A Gun'
News

"Jane Got a Gun," the small-scale western starring Natalie Portman that recently attached "We Need to Talk About Kevin" filmmaker Lynne Ramsay as a director, could be getting some added firepower in the form of a white hot leading man, sex addict and occasional robot (in the movies, at least) Michael Fassbender. Vulture reports that the actor is in early talks for the film, which could start lensing early next year.

A member of the coveted Hollywood Black List, the script by Brian Duffield concerns a woman (Portman) who reaches out to a hard-ass ex-lover (the role Fassbender would play) after her outlaw husband is left for dead. The bulk of the movie would have Portman and Fassbender defending her home against her husband's marauding ex-partners as they come back to finish what they started. Even with a tiny budget (under $20 million) and Ramsay's occasionally obtusely arty directorial style, this sounds like it could be ridiculously cool.

As the Vulture report notes, the film is being financed by Portman's handsomecharlie films production shingle, which in turn is backed by 1821, an outfit that also backed the Richard Kelly/Cameron Diaz vehicle "The Box," which despite having the infamous distinction of the only movie in history to receive an F from Cinemascore, is a pretty interesting and argumentatively weird little thriller. We expect similar strangeness from "Jane Got a Gun," especially after Ramsay's triumphant return to the big screen with last year's profound (and profoundly disturbing) "We Need to Talk About Kevin." After a nearly ten year absence between 'Kevin' and her previous film "Morvern Callar," the idea that we'll be getting Ramsay films at regular intervals tickles us to no end.

While Fassbender hasn't signed on the dotted line, Vulture is reporting that he is incredibly close. The actor is currently filming Cormac McCarthy's "The Counselor" for his "Prometheus" director Ridley Scott, which recently suspended production for a week while Ridley dealt with the tragic suicide of his brother, Tony Scott. Ramsay had previously said that she wanted to tackle a sci-fi retelling of "Moby d***" next, but that will undoubtedly follow "Jane Got A Gun." Hey, if Portman could make a hit out of "Black Swan," maybe she could do it for a gritty low budget western, too, which would certainly enable Ramsay's more ambitious and complex "Moby d***" project.

Exclusive: Michael Fassbender May Be Triggerman on Natalie Portman’s Jane Got a Gun [UPDATE]

By Claude Brodesser-Akner

It may be that Jane Got a Gun, but it’s looking more and more like Michael Fassbender will be its triggerman: Our spies tell us that Fassbender is negotiating to star in the Western that’s already attracted Natalie Portman and We Need to Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay.

In Jane, Portman, who is also producing, would play a woman married to an outlaw who returns home bullet-riddled and half-dead, betrayed by criminal confederates hot on his heels. Fassbender would play the ex-lover Portman seeks out to help her defend her farm from the imminent onslaught of black hats.

The project is being made independently, with the budget well under $20 million. That’s cheap enough to be financed entirely through Portman’s handsomecharlie films, which has backing from 1821, the financing outfit run by Greek shipping heir (is there any other kind?) Paris Latsis and Terry Dougas.

And yes, while Latsis and Dougas have the dubious distinction of having executive produced the Cameron Diaz horror film The Box – one of the few films ever to receive an outright F CinemaScore — Jane Got a Gun is actually a cracklingly paced script by Brian Duffield that made Hollywood’s annual “black list” last year.

It will be interesting to see if a deal can be sealed with Fassbender, who’s currently in the midst of shooting The Counselor with his old Prometheus director Ridley Scott. If the talks continue to go as well as they have, we hear the plan is to put Jane before cameras by early next year.

UPDATE: We are told that financing entity 1821, while still producing Jane Got a Gun, will not be financing it. Instead, Jane will be wholly financed by producer Scott Steindorff's Scott Pictures.

Michael Fassbender Set for Jane Got a Gun
September 6, 2012

Michael Fassbender has officially joined the cast of Lynne Ramsey's Jane Got a Gun, ComingSoon.net has learned.

The film, set to star Natalie Portman, features a script by Brian Duffield. Set to start shooting in early 2013, Jane Got a Gun centers on a woman who must ask an ex-lover for help in order to save her outlaw husband from a gang out to kill him.

Mars picks up 'Jane Got a Gun'

Gaul’s Mars Distribution has pre-bought Lynne Ramsay’s Western “Jane Got a Gun,” which toplines Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender.

The buzzed-about project, which was unveiled at Cannes, is the first pic repped by Scott Pictures Intl., the shingle launched earlier this year by Scott Steindorff’s Scott Pictures and Exclusive Media.

Stephane Celerier, founder and topper of Mars Distribution, one Gaul’s leading indie distributors, nabbed all rights.

Penned by Brian Duffield, “Jane Got a Gun” centers on a woman who asks her ex-lover for help in order to save her outlaw husband from a gang out to kill him.

“I bought the film at Toronto after reading the script,” said Celerier. “What drew me to this project is the chemistry between the director Lynne Ramsay, who’s also co-producing; the subject of the film; and the casting of Natalie Portman, who’s in my opinion the biggest star in Hollywood today.”

It’s Ramsey’s follow up to critically-acclaimed indie “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” which competed at Cannes.

“Jane Got a Gun” is expected to start shooting early next year.

Also on Mars Distribution’s slate are Woody Allen’s untitled pic starring Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin.

Joel Edgerton in Talks for Western JANE GOT A GUN
by Dave Trumbore Posted: December 11th, 2012 at 3:47 pm

Joel Edgerton (Warrior) is setting his sights west as he is in negotiations to join Jane Got a Gun, a Western directed by Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin). Written by Brian Duffield, Jane Got a Gun centers on the titular good girl married to a very bad man who turns against his outlaw gang and gets a back full of bullets for his trouble. With the outlaws still out for revenge, Jane is forced to turn to an old flame in order to bring justice to the deadly gunslingers. Natalie Portman (Black Swan) is set to star in the lead with Michael Fassbender (Prometheus) playing the ex-lover. Edgerton is in negotiations to play the outlaw husband. Jane Got a Gun is set to begin production in February. Hit the jump for more.

joel-edgerton-jane-got-a-gunDeadline reports that Edgerton is in talks to join Jane Got a Gun as Jane’s renegade husband, Bill Hammond. Edgerton can next be seen in Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty and was reported as being on the short list for the lead in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Here’s the synopsis for Jane Got a Gun:

Young and pretty with a soul of pure steel, Jane Hammond (Natalie Portman) is a good girl married to one of the worst baddies in town. When her husband Bill turns against his own gang, the vicious Bishop Boys, and returns home barely alive with eight bullets in his back, Jane knows it’s time to ditch the dress for a pair of pants and strap on her own gun. As the relentless leader John Bishop gears up for revenge, Jane’s best hope for her family’s survival rests with her old love Dan Frost (Michael Fassbender) – a gunslinger whose hatred for Bill is only slightly overshadowed by his love for Jane. Together Jane and Dan spring clever traps, luring Bishop’s men to certain death just as their old feelings for each other resurface amidst the flying bullets.

With director Lynne Ramsay (WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN, MORVERN CALLAR) at the helm, the rich dimensions of these characters find their best ally with Jane out in front, taking her fate into her own hands with the kind of bravado legends are made of.

Michael Fassbender Exits Natalie Portman's 'Jane Got a Gun' (Exclusive)
6:39 PM PDT 3/11/2013 by Borys Kit

Jude Law now will play the villain as Joel Edgerton shifts to the hero role in the high-profile Western.
Michael Fassbender Jude Law Joel Edgerton - H 2013

Michael Fassbender, who was to have played the male lead in the Natalie Portman-led Western, has exited the movie, while Joel Edgerton, who was on board to play the villain, will step into the hero role.

Jude Law, in the meantime, has signed on for the villain, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Gun centers on a woman whose outlaw husband returns home riddled with bullet wounds and barely alive. When her husband’s gang eventually tracks him down to finish the job, she is forced to reach out to an ex-lover and ask if he will help defend her farm.

Edgerton will now play the ex-lover while Law will be the leader of the gang that lays siege to the homestead.

The moves come a week from the start of shooting in New Mexico. Sources say the actor rotation came about due to Fassbender's schedule conflict with his upcoming shoot in Montreal for X-Men: Days of Future Past. Jane has been pushed back several times and now is scheduled to begin filming in April.

Scott Steindorff, Aleen Keshishian and Terry Dougas are producing. Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin) is directing.

Edgerton, who next appears in the all-star adaptation of The Great Gatsby, is repped by CAA, Shanahan Management and Hirsch Wallerstein

Law is coming off of a starring turn in Steven Soderbergh’s Side Effects and just wrapped shooting Wes Anderson’s latest, the ensemble comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel. He is repped by WME, LBI Entertainment and Jackoway Tyerman.
