Filming location for Benedict's Twelve Years A Slave

Sorry, have not had time for a “proper” blog on this but I keep seeing so much misinformation….

Our family went on a River Road plantation tour in Vacherie, Louisiana this week and Twelve Years a Slave is NOT filming at the St Joseph plantation (which we did tour) but at the Felicity Plantation next door (And next door in the country means way down the road!). Location signs are already posted for the shoot, which is supposed to start there Monday.

(Do not think you should make a road trip out there and stalk anyone, as it’s not a place where you could get close enough to see anything anyway or even park on the road and watch people going in and out. It’s a rural area on a 2-lane highway and the location is set far off the road. They’ve built a gate to the only entrance to the site. Across the road from the site is an enormous levee holding back the Mississippi River. Around the house are trees and then all of that is set in a large open field. Behind the location is acres and acres of sugar cane fields (2500 acres in all, folks!) All you could do is disrupt filming for no advantage whatsoever, as not even the owners are allowed in while filming is going on.)

I do know from the people who rented it out that they are filming ONLY exterior shots there. The inside of that plantation is in disrepair and supposedly will not be used. I have no idea where they will shoot the interiors.

This plantation is the same one used in the film The Skeleton Key. Below is an accurate photo from google, so you can see what I mean, and better than what I was able to get on just a phone from a moving car!

One interesting tidbit, however, is that the production did borrow an old bathtub from the St Joseph interior to use for something next door. Since they are not filming interiors there, I have no idea, unless they have an outdoor bath scene. In any event, this could indicate a scene where someone bathes. Let us pray it is you know who
