Michael Fassbender is one of the most highly regarded actors of his generation – and seems to choose one quality film after another. He was part of a stunning ensemble cast in last year's 12 Years a Slave, is a fantastic addition to the X-Men films as Magneto, and can currently be seen starring alongside Domhnall Gleeson and Maggie Gyllenhaal in Frank.

Here we take a look at five stand-out performances from Fassbender. Any you'd add to the list? Let us know in the thread below.

NB: The following clips contain adult material.
Shame

Steve McQueen's story of a man battling a sex addiction was an emotional and poignant study of compulsion, and a taut exploration of human neurosis.
Fish Tank

Mia lives in an East London tower block with her mother and younger sister. Their lives are disrupted – for good and bad – when Mia's mum gets a new boyfriend, Connor (Fassbender). Shot in chronological order, the film won the Jury Prize at Cannes and is a brilliant example of gritty, realistic homegrown cinema.
A Dangerous Method

Fassbender dons circular-rimmed glasses, moustache and pocket watch to play a sleek and professional Carl Jung opposite Viggo Mortensen's Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg's adaptation of Christopher Hampton's 2002 stage play.
Hunger

Fassbender played Bobby Sands in his first collaboration with Steve McQueen, losing a huge amount of weight for the role in this stark and affecting look at the Troubles.
Inglourious Basterds

As British double agent Archie Hicox Fassbender is one of the few good things about Tarantino's patchy, frustrating war film. He gets extra points for speaking faultless German and for delivering the line, "there's a special rung in hell for people who waste good Scotch", in the smoothest possible way.
