Viggo Mortensen Replaces Christoph Waltz in David Cronenberg’s The Talking Cure

Posted on Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 by Russ Fischer

Viggo replaces Waltz Talkin10

Back in December we got word that David Cronenberg would in fact shoot The Talking Cure, an adaptation of the Christopher Hampton play about Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung that was floated as a possible Cronenberg project back in 2007. At the time, he seemed to have a fantastic cast lined up: Christoph Waltz as Freud, Michael Fassbender as Jung, and Keira Knightley as Sabina Spielrein, the patient with whom both men have a relationship of sorts.

Now, sadly, Waltz has dropped out. But Cronenberg’s recent go-to actor, Viggo Mortensen, has stepped in to replace him.

Deadline Hollywood reports on the deal, saying that Waltz had to drop out in order to do Water for Elephants, the Depression-era circus romance being directed by Francis Lawrence. (In which Waltz replaced Sean Penn.) The Talking Cure is scheduled to begin a ten-week shoot in mid-May, which will overlap with Water for Elephants.

Deadline describes Knightley’s character Sabina as “a disturbed young woman brought to see Jung by her father.” Jung and Sabina have an affair, and amid the dramatic fireworks, the article reports the film will feature “lots of spirited sex.” Hopefully it was the schedule and not the sex that put off Waltz, though it sounds like Fassbender and Knightley will do most of the physical work. So nix that worry altogether, and just focus on the sex.

The actor’s departure reportedly threatened the production entirely, but Viggo Mortensen, who has previously worked with David Cronenberg in A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, stepped in to fill his shoes. He’ll be more than able to carry off the role, I would expect, but I admit that I was really looking forward to seeing Waltz and Fassbender have scenes together. At the same time, given the cast, the story and the fact that David Cronenberg is in the director’s chair, I’ll take it, no questions asked.

*************
Wow. I can't help but thinking that Waltz is going to regret this. Consider the quality of Cronenberg's last couple. Phenomenal films. He's jumping ship to do a flick with Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon? Directed by the guy who did I Am Legend? Ehhh....I'm no Hollywood fatcat, but that doesn't seem like the best career move.

And I was really, really excited to see Waltz directed by Cronenberg too. Shucks. Hey, it's fine, Viggo is the truth. He and Cronenberg will be regarded in the same breath as great actor/director pairings like Deniro and Scorsese or Eastwood and Leone or whoever and whatever.

Waltz better hope Water for Elephants will be a winner, cause The Talking Cure sure as f&#! will be.

Mortensen In, Waltz Out Of Cronenberg’s Sigmund Freud Pic
Posted on 09 March 2010 by Dan Mecca in News

In saying yes to the villain role in Water For Elephants, Oscar winner Christoph Waltz had to turn down the opportunity to play psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud for director David Cronenberg’s adaptation of The Talking Cure, a play by Christopher Hampton (Atonement, The Quiet American).

But the bad news stops there: Waltz’s spot has been picked up by Cronenberg regular Viggo Mortensen. The play concerns Freud and his complicated relationship with young pupil Carl Jung. When a father brings his tortured daughter Sabina to Jung for psychological help. The two begin an affair, things unravel and conflict ensues. [Deadline Hollywood]

Michael Fassbender is set to play Jung and Keira Knightley’s set to play Sabina.

Shooting starts on May 17th for a little over 2 months.

Hopefully this all goes smoothly and we see this film soon. Cronenberg needs to be making as many movies as possible with casts as good as this. He’s the best we’ve got, and Freud feels right up his alley.

Are you excited to see a film about Sigmund Freud? Directed by Cronenberg no less?

Sigmund Freud Gets Cast: Christoph Waltz's Loss Is Viggo Mortensen's Gain
By TIM ADLER Tuesday March 9, 2010 @ 9:58am PST

UPDATES 'Basterd' Christoph Waltz To Play Circus Nazi

Viggo replaces Waltz Viggo_11

From Deadline|London editor Tim Adler: Remember Mike Fleming’s story last month about Christoph Waltz, who won the Best Actor Oscar on Sunday for his portrayal of a Jew-hunting Nazi, being lined up to play another psychopath in Water For Elephants? Well, it turns out that in going for that role, he dropped out of playing one of the most influential Jews in history. Waltz was going to star as Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg’s The Talking Cure, due to start filming on May 17 for 10 weeks. Based on the play by Christopher Hampton, the pic is about the conflict between Freud and his pupil Jung.

Waltz’s departure left the producers scrabbling for a replacement. There were fears they would have to scrap the German/Canadian co-production completely. “You’d have thought Waltz wouldn’t want to be typecast as a sadist,” one of the filmmakers grumbled to me. Happily, Viggo Mortensen, who worked so memorably with Cronenberg on Eastern Promises, has just replaced Waltz. Mortensen will star as Freud opposite Michael Fassbender as Jung. Keira Knightley will play Sabina, a disturbed young woman brought to see Jung by her father. Jung and Sabina have an affair, and the producers are promising me “lots of spirited sex”. (Viggo had that other spirited sex scene with Maria Bello in Cronenberg's A History Of Violence.)

If the movie’s going to be as hot as the producers hope, I can’t help but think that as a title The Talking Cure is a little flaccid. Surely the filmmakers can come up with something better?

Viggo Mortenson filling in for Christoph Waltz in David Cronenberg’s THE TALKING CURE
Joshua Brunsting
by: Joshua Brunsting
March 9th, 2010

Looking back on it, it was just a matter of time before Cronenberg went back to his muse to help with a new project.

According to Deadline Hollywood (via The Film Stage), after saying yes to a role in WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, Christoph Waltz has in turn left the cast of David Cronenberg’s upcoming Sigmund Freud film, THE TALKING CURE.

The film, based on a play by Christopher Hampton, follows “Freud and his complicated relationship with young pupil Carl Jung. When a father brings his tortured daughter Sabina to Jung for phsychological help, the two begin an affair, and things unravel and conflict ensuses.”

However sad it may be to see Waltz leave, the article is also reporting that Cronenberg’s go-to guy, Viggo Mortenson, has been cast in the role of Freud, and will join Michael Fassbender and Keira Knightley as the two lovers, Jung and Sabina. Filming is set to start in May.

Not only is Cronenberg a rather gifted filmmaker, but Mortenson is at his best when he is alongside the director. Two of his best performances came in Cronenberg films, EASTERN PROMISES and A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, and along with this rather interesting premise, this could be the makings of one hell of a film. A film featuring this cast, is about Freud, and is directed by Cronenberg is otherwise known as brilliant, so here’s to hoping it lives up to the expectations.

Viggo Mortensen Replaces Christoph Waltz As Sigmund Freud In David Cronenberg's 'The Talking Cure'

Just a few weeks ago, it was announced that Christoph Waltz had joined the Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson depression-era romance, "Water For Elephants."

What wasn't reported then, and that Deadline reports today is that by taking that role, Waltz effectively had to drop out of David Cronenberg's forthcoming "The Talking Cure" leaving producers scrambling to find a replacement for the film that is set to start shooting on May 17th.

Well, the story has a happy ending as the equally awesome Viggo Mortensen is set to team up with Cronenberg for their third collaboration, replacing the departed Waltz in the role of Sigmund Freud. The film is based on the Christopher Hampton play and follows the founding fathers of psychoanalysis, Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, and their complicated relationships with a brilliant and beautiful patient, Sabina Spielrein. Mortensen joins Keira Knightley and Michael Fassbender who will be playing Spielrein and Jung respectively.

Production was originally slated to take place in Germany, and we imagine that's still the case. The film will shoot for ten weeks, which likely means a 2011 release. Either way, the cast is top notch and we can't wait to see how Cronenberg plumbs the depths of Freud and Jung.

This sounds amazing! I can't wait to see how Cronenberg, Mortensen, Fassbender and Knightly play this. As a man as complicated as Freud, we could be looking at a Best Actor nod for Mortensen...Oscar loves a biopic..

The French distributors Mars Films on their Facebook page are reporting that Vincent Cassel has joined the cast.

If memory serves me right the role of Jung is more the male lead in the play.

I hope that Waltz didn't leave over the pay cheques involved that would be rather sad!

Viggo Mortensen Replacing Christoph Waltz in The Talking Cure
March 9th, 2010

Mortensen will reunite with his Eastern Promises director, David Cronenberg

Last month we reported that Oscar winner Christoph Waltz would be replacing Sean Penn in an upcoming film project, and now we've learned that Waltz himself had to be replaced on another film as well. Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that Viggo Mortensen will replace Christoph Waltz in The Talking Cure.

It seemed that when Waltz stepped in for Penn for the film Water for Elephants last month, he had to leave The Talking Cure, which will be directed by David Cronenberg and is set to start filming this May. Mortensen, who starred in Cronenberg's last two films, A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, has stepped in for Waltz.

The film, based off the play by Christopher Hampton, centers on the conflict between Sigmund Freud (Mortensen) and his student Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender). Keira Knightley will play Sabina, a woman who goes into be treated by Jung and ends up having an affair with him.

The film is set to start principal photography on May 17.

Mortensen as Freud seems interesting. I'm also surprised that it took this long for a movie about the relationship between Freud and Jung to be made. The schism between them basically created the two leading forms of psychology.

Hope Waltz' Head hasn't gotten big already. Some actors are better when they are hungry. When they get the royal treatment, the talent and appreciation for their own craft usually gives way to stardom. That would be a shame. He was excellent in Inglorious Basterds.

Viggo replaces Waltz Viggo-10

Viggo Mortenson Replaces Christoph Waltz as Sigmund Freud
Tuesday, March 9, 2010 12:00PM - By Krystal Clark

This past Sunday, Christoph Waltz walked away with a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as a Jew-hating Nazi in Inglourious Basterds. According to Deadline Hollywood he’s decided to leave a promising role in an upcoming film that would have had him playing one of the most influential Jewish men in history, Sigmund Freud.

Waltz was set to star in director David Cronenberg’s biopic, The Talking Cure. The shoot is scheduled to begin this May and is expected to last for 10 weeks, but the actor dropped out. He’s been replaced by the ridiculously talented Viggo Mortensen, who will star in the film about “the conflict between Freud and his pupil Jung.” Many thought that Waltz’ absence would kill the production but luckily for the director, Mortensen signed on at the last minute.

Mortensen has worked with Croenenberg before on the films, Easter Promises and A History of Violence, so they already have an established professional relationship. While he plays Freud, Michael Fassbender will star as Jung, and Keira Knightley as Sabina, a disturbed young woman brought to see Jung by her father. Both Jung and Sabina will embark on a torrid affair, which will cause for the actors to take part in plenty of “spirited sex” scenes.

I’m not sure what that means, but if their sex scenes are anything like the ones in A History of Violence, no thanks.

What do you think of Mortensen replacing Waltz? Do you think it was the right decision for him to leave the film?

Viggo Mortensen Will Take David Cronenberg's 'Talking Cure'

by Elisabeth Rappe Mar 9th 2010 // 6:02PM

When an actor wins an Oscar, all bets are off, including the ones he's made with David Cronenberg. Last December, Cronenberg revived The Talking Cure and had recruited Michael Fassbender, Keira Knightley, and Christoph Waltz to psychoanalyze one another in the name of love and medicine. But Waltz has been buried in offers, and Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that he's dropped out of the project in favor of Water For Elephants. Luckily, Cronenberg has a very good actor and friend in his contacts, and he just called him up. The result is that Viggo Mortensen has now joined The Talking Cure as Sigmund Freud.

Cure centers on a young Carl Jung who uses Sigmund Freud's "talking cure" on a young and troubled Russian woman. In the process of psychoanalyzing her, he falls in love with her. Freud comes along, marvels at his success, and anoints him his psychiatric successor. When Jung starts to develop his own ideas about therapy, Freud isn't too happy, and their professional relationship sours. DHD says that the producers have promised "lots of spirited sex" which Cronenberg has always filmed rather well, so no surprise there.

Mortensen and Cronenberg have two excellent films under their belt, and there's no reason to sneer at a third. (Or a fourth if they ever make that Eastern Promises sequel.) I'm eager to see Mortensen work with Fassbender and Knightley (who both rank among my favorites) and the two method men should really fire up the screen. It's going to be good.

Viggo Mortensen Replaces Christoph Waltz On New Cronenberg Film
By: Martyn Conterio

“Verrry interestink, ja?” In a bit of non-Freudian analysis, it appears Viggo Mortensen is joining up with his old friend, Dave “Deprave” Cronenberg, for a movie titled The Talking Cure. We reported a few months ago that Kiera Knightley, Michael Fassbender and Christoph Waltz were badgering the Canadian horror maestro for roles in his latest. Deadline Hollywood have it that Waltz has waltzed off with his Best Supporting Actor Oscar and Mortensen has waltzed in.

It’s been a while since Cronenberg bestowed a horror film on the world and has spent most of the last decade making psycho dramas and even thrillers! A History of Violence was brilliant and Eastern Promises was, well, alright.

The Talking Cure is based on a play by director, scriptwriter, playwright, tinker, tailor, soldier, spy Christopher Hampton. The film charts the splitting off of Freudian analysis and Jungian analysis over a case involving a troubled young girl (no doubt, hysterical). Jung is played by ace Irish thesp Michael Fassbender, whereasViggo Mortensen will be sporting a pointy beard, spectacles and Austrian accent as Sigmund Fraud, I mean Freud!

Cronenberg has pencilled in a May start date with a tentative release date for early next year.

Viggo Mortensen replaces Christoph Waltz in The Talking Cure with Keira Knightley

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

After winning the Oscar on Sunday night for Best Supporting Actor, it was only natural that Christoph Waltz would have so many job offers that he couldn’t possibly take them all. In this case, David Cronenberg’s THE TALKING CURE is getting denied as Christoph will move forward with WATER FOR ELEPHANTS instead. But all is not lost for Cronenberg and now he has the chance to reteam with his A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and EASTERN PROMISES star Viggo Mortensen. You get the feeling that he wanted that all along?

The film is based on the play by Christopher Hampton and is about Sigmund Freud (Mortensen) and his tumultuous relationship with his pupil Jung (Michael Fassbender). Keira Knightley plays Sabina, a young woman brought in to see Jung. Filming begins in May.

Viggo replaces Waltz 1746410

Aragorn Will Replace Hans Landa as Freud
By Doug Norrie: 2010-03-09 13:59:53

Aragorn Will Replace Hans Landa as Freud Well here’s a psychosexual development. Deadline says Viggo Mortensen will replace Christopher Waltz as Sigmund Freud in the upcoming movie The Talking Cure. Waltz left after taking a role in Water for Elephants or as I call it: The Most Overrated Book of the Decade. Mortensen will step in as the backup plan and star as the Austrian psychoanalyst.

I can’t help but think Waltz would have been perfect in this role as a dude who did cocaine while basically mapping out the subconscious. It would have offered the complete antithesis of his Oscar-winning role as “The Jew Hunter,” in Inglourious Basterds. He would have played a Jewish-Austrian who narrowly escaped the Nazi’s wrath. But alas, Waltz has moved on, leaving Mortensen to take the reins as a Freud. Mortensen is, most assuredly, an adequate replacement in the story of Freud’s relationship with his pupil Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender).

The Talking Cure, and here I totally agree with Tim Adler, is an absolutely terrible name for a movie that could explore and uncover one of the most interesting men of the 20th Century. With any luck, Viggo can bring some of his intrigue and a little je ne sais quoi to a role full of sex, drugs, and super-ego.

David Cronenberg Finds A New Freud
Viggo's in, Waltz out for Talking Cure

Christoph Waltz might have scored the “uber bingo” with his Supporting Actor win at this past weekend’s Oscars, but it’s Viggo Mortensen who has picked up the good fortune today, since Waltz’ busy schedule means he’s had to drop out of playing Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg’s The Talking Cure, leaving the way clear for Viggo & Dave: round three.

As Waltz switches instead to play a psycho in Water For Elephants, so Cronenberg has recruited Mortensen – who starred for him in A History Of Violence and Eastern Promises – to take on a less action-packed role in Cure.

Based on Christopher Hampton’s play, the story sees Freud disagreeing with his pupil, Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and Jung kicking off an affair with Sabina (Keira Knightley), an emotionally troubled young woman whose father brings her to him for treatment.

Cronenberg plans to start shooting in May, with a release date pencilled in for next year.

Viggo Mortensen replaces Christoph Waltz in THE TALKING CURE
Posted by Matt Holmes on March 10, 2010 – 1:20 am | 0 comments

The only niggle I have with David Cronenberg’s adaptation of Chris Hampton’s (Atonement) psychoanalytical play which deconstructs the relationship between Sigmund Freud and his pupil Karl Jung is the title itself; “The Talking Cure“. The drama begins shooting May 17th for 10 weeks in Germany.

For me, the title just isn’t evocative enough and I doubt it’ll attract any curiosity outside of the most elitist of cinema-going circles. Any movie with the word “Talking” appearing anywhere in it’s title and that’s not a family orientated high-concept picture (i.e. “The Talking Lizard”) – just sounds like a stuffy, dialogue heavy bore-fest.

Of course Cronenberg outside of A History of Violence, has never been a mass audience crowd-pleaser, and the tale of Freud/Jung doesn’t lend itself to this thinking – but with Keira Knightley likely to receive top billing in a cast that includes Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender, I can’t help but feel they are selling themselves short with a weak title.

Fassbender (Jung), Morstensen (Freud) play the two prof’s with Knightley as the beautiful, smart and seductive patient, Sabina Spielrein, who inspired both but eventually tore the close friends apart.

Mortensen from Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises and A History of Violence replaced Waltz today in haste according to Deadline, as the latter decided to take another villain role in three notches down helmer Francis Lawrence and his Water for Elephants instead.

Turn down Cronenberg for Lawrence? Bad career move, I’d say.

Tonight I was in the process of putting together my most anticipated performances of the year and Waltz as Freud in a Cronenberg movie was right up there but Mortensen is incomparable really, and my anticipation for the movie hasn’t soured one bit.

Vincent Cassel is also on board according to French distributor’s Mars Films’ Facebook but no word on what role yet.

Viggo Mortensen replaces Christoph Waltz as Sigmund Freud in The Talking Cure

by: Niki Stephens Mar. 9, 2010

When Christoph Waltz took the role as the psychotic wife beater in WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, he had to drop out of the role of Sigmund Freud for David Cronenberg's THE TALKING CURE.

Waltz's departure left the producers in a rush for a replacement. Well, they found it in Viggo Mortensen.

Before they locked Mortensen, they were scared production on the film would be closed indefinitely. One of the filmmakers told Deadline, “You’d have thought Waltz wouldn’t want to be typecast as a sadist." Mortensen was apparently more than happy to take the role, since he and Cronenberg had worked so well together on EASTERN PROMISES.

In the film, which is adapted from the play of the same name by Christopher Hampton, Freud (Mortensen) takes on pupil Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender). When Jung has an affair with a troubled young woman (Keira Knightley) who is also his patient, Freud disapproves. The producers informed Deadline that there would be a lot of "spirited sex scenes" between Fassbender and Knightley.

Extra Tidbit: David Cronenberg was set to direct TOTAL RECALL at one point. He even wrote a few drafts of the script before Paul Verhoeven took over.

Viggo Mortensen Replaces Christoph Waltz For Cronenberg’s THE TALKING CURE
Share Posted by Rama On March - 9 - 2010

Oscar winner Christoph Waltz. It’s really good saying that, Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, that’s uber bingo! was supposed to star along side Michael Fassbender and Keira Knightley in the adaptation THE TALKING CURE to be directed by David Cronenberg but DeadlineHollywood said Cronenberg’s go-to guy Viggo Mortensen (A History Of Violence, Eastern Promises) has replaced Waltz, the reason is because Waltz wants to focus on starring in WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, for a villainous role that might be his ticket to Oscar again, can you imagine the possibilities…

THE TALKING CURE based on the play by Christopher Hampton about Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and their complicated relationship with a Russian patient named Sabina Spielrein.
Knightly would play Spielrein, Fassbedner would play Jung and Mortensen would play Freud.

A beautiful young woman, driven mad by her past. An ambitious doctor on a mission to succeed. Anesteemed mentor with a revolutionary cure. Let the mind games begin…

You can get THE TALKING CURE on paperback at amazon, here’s the official synopsis..

“Overshadowed by portents of the coming wars, Zurich and Vienna are the setting for this tale of emotional vicissitude and intellectual debate. The Talking Cure is an intimate picture of the birth of psychoanalysis and of two intense and inextricably interwoven relationships. Carl Jung uses Sigmund Freud’s “talking cure” on Sabina, a young Russian hysteric with whom he will fall in love. Impressed with Jung’s results, Freud anoints him his successor, but when Jung develops his own theories they part ways. Sensitive and intelligent, The Talking Cure illuminates the origins of one of the twentieth century’s most influential schools of thought.

Viggo Mortensen Reteaming with Cronenberg in Talking Cure

March 9, 2010
by Ethan Anderton
David Cronenberg / Viggo Mortensen

Remember last month when we heard the recent Academy Award winning Christoph Waltz was replacing Sean Penn in Francis Lawrence's adaptation of Water for Elephants? Well, his taking on that role meant that he had to give one up, and Deadline reports that it was his forthcoming turn as the famous psychiatrist Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg's The Talking Cure that has been swapped out for another actor. Waltz was swiftly replaced with the comparable talent of Viggo Mortensen in the story, based on a play by Christopher Hampton, about the conflict between Freud and his pupil Jung, played by Michael Fassbender.

Though Fassbender's involvement in the adaptation, as well as Keira Knightly's, has been locked for awhile, apparently Waltz's departure left it in jeopardy of being shelved. But with Mortensen's involvement, there's a level of comfort since he and Cronenberg came together twice for fantastic collaborations on A History of Violence and Eastern Promises. The Playlist also learned that Vincent Cassell (Eastern Promises, Ocean's 12) has joined the cast, but his role has yet to be revealed. Though I'm fine with Mortensen taking on the role, it would've been nice to see Waltz play something other than such a dastardly character again, since that's exactly what he's doing in Water for Elephants. We'll just have to see how both of these turn out.

Mortenson and Cronenberg Teaming Up Again

Viggo Mortenson and David Cronenberg are teaming up again for their third film, in what should be expected to garner some award consideration two years from now. Both Mortenson and Cronenberg are among the most underrated professionals in the business. Their previous two collaborations A History of Violence and Eastern Promises were among the best films of the past decade. The two are teaming up again in The Talking Cure, based on a play about the relationship between Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. Mortenson is set to play Freud with Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds, Hunger) playing Jung. Given the talent involved this is sure to be a highly anticipated film of 2011 or whenever it is released. Given that Mortenson is portraying such a high profile figure of the early 20th century, Mortenson is sure to get some award attention, if everything falls into place Mortenson can find it his year to win some serious awards. Here's hoping to the best for this film -- link below to the news story

Mortensen, Cassel Are In The Talking Cure, Waltz Out

by Dan Winclechter.

Time is closing in on the production start for David Cronenberg’s next feature film, The Talking Cure. The big news from Deadline is that Christoph Waltz dropped out in order to take a role in Water for Elephants, which lead Cronenberg to now-frequent collaborator Viggo Mortensen as his replacement. Vincent Cassel, another returner from Eastern Promises, has also joined the cast according to the French distributor. I believe this will make Mortensen the most used lead actor by Cronenberg, and in three straight films to boot, beating out the two films with Jeremy Irons.

The Talking Cure is based on a play by Christopher Hampton. Here’s the premise:

Overshadowed by portents of the coming wars, Zurich and Vienna are the setting for this tale of emotional vicissitude and intellectual debate.

Mortensen will portray Sigmund Freud, with Michael Fassbender playing Carl Jung and Keira Knightley as Sabina. The nature of Vincent Cassel’s role isn’t clear. Production is scheduled to kick off on May 17th for 10 weeks in Germany.

It’s Cronenberg, so needless to say I’m psyched. I’ve got my fingers crossed for an end of the year release date.

Viggo Mortensen in talks to play Sigmund Freud

By Philippa Bourke Mar 10, 2010, 6:15 GMT

Dashing Viggo Mortensen is lining up to channel the couch dreams of beautiful women.

Or something like that. The star of the darkly intense The Road is in talks to play Sigmund Freud in The Talking Cure, according to film site buzz.

Digital Spy reports Mortensen will replace Christoph Waltz as the founding father of psychoanalysis following a scheduling conflict involving Waltz. Mortensen will again work with director David Cronenberg, who directed him in A History of Violence and Eastern Promises with Naomi Watts.

The key story line in the movie is the conflict between Freud and theorist Carl Jung, who will be played by Michael Fassbender. Their dramatic relationship, indeed, is portrayed as giving birth to psychoanalysis. Keira Knightley, according to the buzz, may just make it onto the couch as an 'unstable young woman'.

Viggo replaces Waltz Viggo-11

Viggo Mortensen Replaces Christoph Waltz as Freud

Written by Michael Dance on 3/10/10

Viggo Mortensen will play Sigmund Freud in The Talking Cure, which will mark his third collaboration with director David Cronenberg after A History of Violence and Eastern Promises.

He steps in for Christoph Waltz, who exited the movie recently to do Water for Elephants, an adaptation of the book by Sara Gruen that also has Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon attached.

The Talking Cure will center around the relationship between Freud and his student Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender), and a disturbed young woman named Sabina (Keira Knightley) who has an affair with Jung. Presumably Freud himself wasn’t interested because Sabina didn’t look like his mother. (See what I did there?)

The producers, apparently fearing people will find the movie’s concept boring, told Deadline it includes “lots of spirited sex.” It’s based on a play by Christopher Hampton.

Good to see Mortensen stepping back into the spotlight; I remember reading a few interviews with him, after he did Appaloosa, The Road, and Good all back-to-back, that sounded as though the guy never wanted to do a movie again. Hopefully he’s enjoyed some R&R since then.

Old joke time:

A. Two. One to change the lightbulb, and one to hold the breasts, I mean ladder

Christoph Waltz's Freudian Slip Is Viggo Mortensen's Casting Gain

Viggo replaces Waltz Viggof10

The producers of a new picture on Sigmund Freud are now paging Dr. Viggo Mortensen.

Mortensen will be cast as the Freud in David Cronenberg's "Talking Cure," based on the play by Christopher Hampton on the conflict between the famous doctor and his pupil Carl Jung. Michael Fassbender will play Jung, according Deadline Hollywood.

"Inglourious Basterd" Christoph Waltz had been lined up for the role of Freud, but he backed out to play another psychopath in "Water For Elephants."

The reteaming of the filmmakers has been eagerly awaited since Mortensen's Oscar-nominated effort in "Eastern Promises" and "A History of Violence."

Filming will start in May. Keira Knightley will play Sabina, a disturbed young woman brought in to see Jung by her father. The two end up having a torrid affair and the producers have promised "lots of spirited sex." Judging from "A History of Violence," Cronenberg generally delivers on those promises.

Cronenberg’s ‘The Talking Cure’ Cast Gets Shake Up

March 10, 2010 by Emily Moulder

David Cronenberg’s new film The Talking Cure has been hit with a cast shake up, with previously announced star Christoph Waltz backing out of the project.

According to DeadlineHollywood, the reason behind the change is that Waltz has also signed on to play a psychopathic animal trainer in Water For Elephants and had to choose between films.

Stepping in to Waltz’s role of Sigmund Freud will be Viggo Mortensen, reuniting him with Cronenberg who previously directed him in Eastern Promises and A History of Violence.

In addition to Mortensen, Vincent Cassel, star of Mesrine, will be joining the cast. The Playlist blog posted the translated announcement from French distributor Mars Films’ Facebook page:

The cast of THE TALKING CURE the next film by David Cronenberg has been announced Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender will play respectively Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, along with Keira Knightley and Vincent Cassel.

Luckily all of this comes before the scheduled shooting date of 17th May so as not to cause big delays. While we’re sad to see Christoph Waltz leave the project, we’re happy that he’s continuing to do big films rather than going back to strictly European cinema. But now that he’s won an Oscar, will he be struck down with the Oscar curse?

Mortensen takes on Talking Cure
Replaces Christoph Waltz in Freud drama...
BY Josh Winning Mar 10th 2010 14:14PM

You win an Oscar and everybody wants a piece of you.

Sadly, even though we’d love to wield casting power in Hollywood and draft Christoph Waltz into every single film made from this point forward (like that Seinfeld gag in 30 Rock), the actor’s only got so much time and energy to play with.

Which is why he’s had to drop out of tinkering about on-screen as Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg’s cool-looking (but boring-titled) The Talking Cure.

The flick’s set to start filming from May for a pretty extensive 10 weeks. But with Waltz signing up to play another head case in Water For Elephants, he’s had to leave Freud in the gutter.

Bad for us, great for Viggo Mortensen, who’s been called in by Cronenberg to replace him. So it’s now Mortensen as Freud, Michael Fassbender as Jung and Keira Knightley as Sabina, the disturbed woman who goes to see Jung for help.

Expect some steamy scenes between the latter, as the producers have pledged “lots of spirited sex”. And if the Mortensen-Cronenberg team-up record is anything to go by (Eastern Promises, A History Of Violence), The Talking Cure will be a punchy, impactful jaunt.

Okay, probably not so much a jaunt as a haunting, depressing examination of humanity. But hey ho!

Can Mortensen fill the thesping void left by Waltz?

Counting down the days

Also, as if the actor combo for David Cronenberg's new Jung/Freud/Sabine film, called The Talking Cure wasn't awesome enough, it turns out that even when you have Christoph Waltz pulling out, it is only followed by more EPIC WIN when he's replaced by Viggo Mortensen. Because now there will be Viggo/Michael Fassbender epic bromance, and I anticipate this is the film that will make me love Keira Knightley. Yeah, let's just recap that: a Viggo-Fassy-Keira Cronenberg film. f&#! YEAH. f&#! YEAH. I rewatched A History of Violence at the weekend and it was still awesome. It really makes me wish Maria Bello had a better career, she is simply wonderful in it. The film is so brilliant and intense and beautifully structured, and also features two of my favourite line deliveries ever - the first being Viggo's "You're naughty" (sexy boyishness ftw!), and the other William Hurt's "How do you f&#! that up?!" (never fails to make me laugh while still being scary). And I absolutely adore the scenes with Viggo and William, they give away so much about the relationship even though they haven't got much screen time.

Obligatory Christoph Waltz Discussion

So, you know how he was going to be Freud, but now he's not? Okay, 1) I am sad that he had to grow that massive beard for nothing, and 2) as much as I don't want him to end up being typecast as a villain, I am kind of happy that he chose Water for Elephants over The Talking Cure. From what I've read, The Talking Cure sounds like it's mainly a sexual romp between Michael Fassbender and Keira Knightley with a few occasional appearances by Sigmund Freud, whereas Water for Elephants sounds like it contains a more interesting role for him, and Christoph has admitted that he's more drawn to darker characters, and... well, I don't blame him for choosing the psychopath over the psychiatrist. I just don't. The thing is, The Talking Cure will probably get way more attention than Water for Elephants will. And people will roll their eyes at Water for Elephants when they learn that RPattz is the main star. *guilty* But again, August sounds like a way more interesting character than Freud, so I am very much looking forward to this. [sidenote: I totally ordered Water for Elephants from Amazon the other night, so he better not drop out of this one] Even worse? I am seriously psyched to see The Green Hornet. He was so excited about it on Leno (or Kimmel)! He kept professing his undying love for Seth Rogen! So, I am eager to see it (and he is bearded for that film, so I suppose the beard wasn't all for nothing).
