Production Starting on Jane Eyre Next Week
Source: Focus Features
March 18, 2010

Production begins next week in the U.K. on Focus Features and BBC Films' romantic drama Jane Eyre, produced by Ruby Films and based on Charlotte Brontë's classic novel. Cary Fukunaga, whose debut feature was Focus' award-winning Sin Nombre, is directing Jane Eyre, to which Focus holds worldwide rights. Focus CEO James Schamus made the announcement today.

Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) will star in the lead roles of the romantic drama. In the story, Jane Eyre (Wasikowska), flees Thornfield House, where she works as a governess for wealthy Edward Rochester (Fassbender). The isolated and imposing residence – and Mr. Rochester's coldness – have sorely tested the young woman's resilience, forged years earlier when she was orphaned. As Jane reflects upon her past and recovers her natural curiosity, she will return to Mr. Rochester – and the terrible secret that he is hiding...

The screenplay adaptation is by Moira Buffini, who for Ruby and BBC Films adapted the upcoming Tamara Drewe. Ruby's Alison Owen (an Academy Award nominee for Elizabeth) and Paul Trijbits (Fish Tank) are producing. Christine Langan, Creative Director of BBC Films, is executive-producing for the BBC. Focus senior vice president, European production Teresa Moneo is supervising the project for president of production John Lyons.

The supporting cast includes Jamie Bell (upcoming The Eagle of the Ninth), Academy Award winner Judi Dench, Holliday Grainger (upcoming Bel Ami), Golden Globe Award winner Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky), Tamzin Merchant (Pride & Prejudice), and Imogen Poots (upcoming Solitary Man). The director of photography is Adriano Goldman, reteaming with Fukunaga following their acclaimed collaboration on Sin Nombre. Will Hughes-Jones (Survivors) is the production designer; Academy Award winner Michael O'Connor (The Duchess) is the costume designer.

Schamus said, "Cary is the ideal choice to realize this unforgettable story in its traditional setting, yet with contemporary vitality and spirit. With two of today’s most promising new stars in Mia and Michael, plus an outstanding supporting cast, this will be a 'Jane Eyre' for the ages."

Langan added, "We're delighted to bring together two such fresh and impressive talents as director Cary Fukunaga and screenwriter Moira Buffini. Added to the gorgeous cast Cary has assembled, this is exactly the treatment Charlotte Brontë's evergreen classic 'Jane Eyre' deserves."

Mia Wasikowska to start filming on ‘Jane Eyre for the ages’
Filed by Jessie K Powell on: March 18th, 2010 in News

Fresh from her electric lead role in Alice In Wonderland, Mia Wasikowska will film the story of the dour Jane Eyre.

The hot young Australian actress, 20, will next week begin work on a Jane Eyre that is billed as a romantic drama and a collaboration of BBC Films and Focus. Moviegoers can expect some major on-screen chemistry between Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender, 32.

The movie that tells Charlotte Bronte’s tale of the governess hired by a darkly tempered Edward Rochester [Fassbender] will also star Dame Judi Dench, Jamie Bell, Imogen Poots and Sally Hawkins.

“With two of today’s most promising new stars in Mia and Michael, plus an outstanding supporting cast, this will be a Jane Eyre for the ages,” Focus Chief Executive Officer James Schamus said in a statement Thursday.

Filming For Jane Eyre Begins Next Week

Filming For Jane Eyre Begins Next Week I know adaptations of centuries-old novels aren't usually the things that get the movie fan community's blood pumping, but I am excited about the upcoming movie version of Jane Eyre, and you should be too. Not only is it directed by Sin Nombre up-and-comer Cary Fukunaga, not only are the likes of Judi Dench and Sally Hawkins showing up in lead roles, but it stars two of the most promising recently famous actors out there-- Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender.

Wasikowska, who you know as Tim Burton's Alice, and Fassbender, who you know as Sgt. Archie Hicox from Inglourious Basterds, will star their tortured love affair on the English heaths shortly. Focus announced this week that filming begins next week. Based on Charlotte Bronte's novel, Jane Eyre stars Wasikowska as the titular heroine, a governess hired to care for the children of the cold, imposing Mr. Rochester (Fassbender). Per the press release, "The isolated and imposing residence – and Mr. Rochester’s coldness – have sorely tested the young woman’s resilience, forged years earlier when she was orphaned. As Jane reflects upon her past and recovers her natural curiosity, she will return to Mr. Rochester – and the terrible secret that he is hiding…" Those of you who remember freshman year English can fill in the rest.

http://lookingcloser.org/2010/03/judi-dench-has-been-cast-in-a-period-piece-finally/

Judi Dench has been cast in a period piece… finally.

Judi Dench will be playing a supporting role in the costume drama Jane Eyre, the latest adaptation of the classic novel by Charlotte Brontë. So, of course, that means this is a project to be taken seriously.

I’d love to see someone do a clever mash-up of Dench’s scenes from all of the period pieces where she has curtly snapped off lines about how the social norms are being upset.

Who are the leads?

Why, the up-and-coming Mia “Gwyneth Paltrow v. 2″ Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and the ruggedly handsome (apparently) Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds, Hunger).

My first thought? Thank goodness this isn’t Tim Burton’s Jane Eyre. The film is being directed by Sin Nombre’s Cary Fukunaga.

Michael booked for Jane Eyre role

Monday March 22 2010

IRISH actor Michael Fassbender has just signed on to play one of the most iconic literary roles in an upcoming film adaptation of Jane Eyre.

The Killarney man, who made his mark as Lt Archie Hicox in Inglourious Basterds, will be playing Mr Rochester alongside Mia Wasikowska, who plays the title role in Alice in Wonderland.

Fassbender has fast become a force to be reckoned with, working with some of the movie industry's biggest names including Michael Douglas, Keira Knightley and Megan Fox.

Although he was born in Germany, the star was raised in Killarney, where his parents run a guesthouse. And in spite of his international success, the actor was in town to celebrate St Patrick's Day last week and acted as grand marshall for his hometown's parade.

Jane Eyre is not short of big names as Hollywood heavy-hitter Judi Dench and Billy Elliot's Jamie Bell are also confirmed to have taken up roles.

Filming began earlier today and is expected to last up to eight weeks in various locations throughout the English countryside, in order to stay true to the Gothic setting of Charlotte Bronte's classic.

The film is expected to be released in early 2011.

Fassbender recently returned home to film a new spy thriller alongside Ewan McGregor under the eye of Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh. Filming took place at the Docklands, Dublin Airport and various locations throughout the city centre and Co Wicklow.

The rising star has also secured another high-profile Hollywood role and will be starring in the Sigmund Freud epic, The Talking Cure, alongside Viggo Mortensen and Keira Knightley.

The Lord of the Rings star will be playing the starring role, with the Killarney man playing Freud's contemporary, Carl Jung.

He rose to fame playing IRA prisoner Bobby Sands in the harrowing Channel 4 film Hunger.

The German-born actor who grew up in Ireland will play Edward Rochester in the latest remake of the Charlotte Bronte classic Jane Eyre.

Michael Fassbender as Lt. Hicox in “Inglourious Basterds"

Irish heartthrob Michael Fassbender has signed as the romantic lead in an upcoming film adaptation of Jane Eyre.

The Kerry man will play Mr. Rochester alongside Mia Wasikowska, who can be currently seen on the big screen in “Alice in Wonderland,” in the title role.

Fassbender first shot to international fame for his role in the 2008 movie “Hunger” when he delivered as tour de force performance as hunger striker Bobby Sands.

Since then he has made a huge impression on Hollywood, playing roles such as Lt. Archie Hicox in “Inglourious Basterds.”

Filming of Jane Eyre will begin this week in Britain with stars such as Dame Judi Dench and “Billy Elliot” Jamie Bell confirmed as c0-stars.

Fassbender’s busy schedule did allow him to return to Killarney where he acted as grand marshal in the town’s parade.

Fassbender was born in Germany but grew up in the picturesque County Kerry tow, where his parents still run a guesthouse.

This Spring Fassbender will star in as Roman soldier Quintas Dias in the Neil Marshall-directed action epic “Centurion.”
