Michael Fassbender to star in “A Single Shot” with William H. Macy

German-born Kerryman Michael Fassbender’s busy year shows no sign of abating with the news that he will star with William H. Macy in the thriller “A Single Shot,” due to start filming this summer.

Thomas Hayden Church, of "Spider-Man 3" and "Sideways" fame, will also star in the David Jacobson–directed movie about a poacher (Fassbender) who makes an error and ends up with blood money and a band of killers on his tail.

Fassbender’s character has to keep the killers at bay and his family safe at the same time.

The Irish actor is working hard at the minute. “Jonah Hex” with Megan Fox and Josh Brolin is being released in June and “Centurion” will have its US release in August.

David Jacobson’s A SINGLE SHOT recruits an all-star cast
Will Schiffelbein
by: Will Schiffelbein
May 17th, 2010

Well, it’s a Monday and that means today’s news will be full of casting announcements held over from the weekend. The latest one includes several of my favorite actors working today. David Jacobson, the director of the 2005 Cannes selection DOWN IN THE VALLEY, has wrangled the likes of Michael Fassbender, William H. Macy, and Thomas Haden Church to star in his adaptation of the novel A Single Shot.

Check out the full story, after the break.

I hadn’t ever heard of this book which, for someone who reads quite regularly, was quite surprising. I perused Amazon for a synopsis and came across this:

A gritty, claustrophobic blend of Jim Thompson and James Dickey, it depicts the seven-day ordeal of a backwoods poacher who accidentally shoots a runaway girl. Set in an unnamed, seedy, mountain town, the novel opens as reclusive John Moon, whose wife and young son have recently left, hunts a buck into a canyon in the state preserve adjacent to his trailer home (which sits on farmland repossessed from his family by the bank some years before). There he fires a shot into a thicket, killing not the buck but teenage Ingrid Banes, who is hiding out with a cache of $100,000.

Not only is this synopsis incredibly intriguing, it also brings to mind a narrative style and tone that would be perfect for the big screen. The story sounds distinctly dark, and looks to expose every dark element of fate that seeks to tear this man apart. Nothing seems to be going right for this guy and things seem to only be getting worse.

These stories are often my favorite. A SERIOUS MAN has a similar plot synopsis, albeit sans homicide, and it was my favorite film from last year. There’s something about films that present huge obstacles to their characters that really interest me. This one has got me hooked as well.

All that interest has been generated without the pull of the cast, which is substantial. William H. Macy is a favorite of mine, particularly his work in FARGO and MAGNOLIA. He’s a one of a kind actor who can deftly portray a certain cynical naiveté. Given the right director and a good script, this guy is up for some long overdue praise.

And then you’ve got Fassbender. While he’s been around for a few years, Michael Fassbender really broke onto the screen last year. He played a British officer in Tarantino’s INGLORIOUS BASTERDS, which got him some mainstream support. But it was his small scale films that really hooked me. FISH TANK was an extremely well told coming of age story that featured not only amazing performance by the lead female actress, but also some keen work by Fassbender himself.

However, it was HUNGER that really made his mark on me. Holy hell. This is just one of those movies. If you’re looking to see an actor go beyond mere portrayal, this is it. It’s a performance that brings to mind Daniel Day-Lewis in THERE WILL BE BLOOD and Peter O’Toole in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. It evokes so much emotion from the viewer that it produces physical reaction. Fassbender truly is the next great actor and I’m very excited to see him work in ways that really challenge him, like A SINGLE SHOT.

Basterd Fassbender Will Star In A Single Shot

Basterd Fassbender Will Star In A Single Shot Michael Fassbender is a pretty busy guy these days. He’s followed up his turn as a British spy in Inglourious Basterds, with a lead in this summer’s Centurion and a role in Jonah Hex. Now, according to ScreenDaily, Fassbender has landed another starring role. He’ll play a poacher on the run in the thriller A Single Shot.

In the David Jacobsen (Down in the Valley)-directed flick, Fassbender will play John Moon, an illegal hunter who mistakenly shoots a teenage girl in the woods. The girl just happens to have $100K on her at the time. Moon finds himself on the run from the money’s true owners, a group of backwoods killers led by Waylon (Thomas Hayden Church). Sounds like No Country for Old Men, but more uplifting.

It’s clear Fassbender’s star has turned in the right direction after his brief, but scene-stealing role in Basterds. He’ll begin peppering the big screen with high profile movies and is currently filming Jane Eyre.

The film is based on the Matthew F. Jones novel of the same name, and Jones adapted the novel for the big screen. Shooting for A Single Shot will begin this summer.

Fassbender and Macy take A Single Shot

Michael Fassbender, William H Macy and Thomas Haden Church are confirmed for lead roles in new thriller A Single Shot.

Directed by David Jacobson (Down In The Valley), Single Shot follows the cat and mouse chase between a hunter (Fassbender) and the assassins out for his blood.

No word yet on Macy and Church’s roles, though we’re pretty intrigued by the idea of this duo as the tag-team answer to Anton Chigurh.

Leslie Mann and Forest Whittaker are already confirmed for the project, which is set to shoot in summer.

HanWay Films are selling A Single Shot at Cannes, and will produce alongside Unanimous Pictures.

Do you like the look of this ensemble?

Fassbender, Macy, Church Fire A "Shot" (400!)

Michael Fassbender, William H. Macy and Thomas Haden Church have joined the cast of the film adaptation "A Single Shot" for HanWay Films and Unanimous Pictures reports The Playlist.

According to the Playlist: Michael Fassbender, William H. Macy and Thomas Haden Church will star in David Jacobson's adaptation of Matthew F. Jones thriller "A Single Shot."

Matthew F. Jones adapted the screenplay from his own novel about a poacher (Fassbender) who accidentally kills a young runaway girl while hunting. Trying to hide the evidence, he finds a large sum of money and soon has ruthless killers on his tail while his mental state begins to quickly deteriorate.

This is another interesting role for Fassbender, who has risen to leading man status after his turn in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds” last summer. He was fantastic in that film and it will be nice to see him take on a role like this.

David Jacobson will direct and shooting kicks off this summer once Fassbender has wrapped David Cronenberg's "A Dangerous Method" which stars Viggo Mortensen, Keira Knightley and Vincent Cassell.

Chris Coen and Christine Sola are producing.

Basterd's Fassbender Joins Screen Adaptation of A Single Shot

By Paige MacGregor

Although he had an extensive career in British film and television prior to his role in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, actor Michael Fassbender gained a significant foothold in American cinema after his performance in Tarantino’s most recent release. Now Fassbender joins actors William H. Macy and Thomas Haden Church in David Jacobson’s adaptation of Matthew F. Jones’ thriller novel A Single Shot, as was first reported Monday by Screen Daily.

Fassbender, whose horror experience includes the 2008 British thriller Eden Lake and 2009 horror drama Blood Creek, is an ideal candidate to play the protagonist from Jones’ novel, a poacher named John Moon. A Single Shot follows Moon through an unfortunate series of events; after accidentally killing a runaway girl while deer hunting, Moon finds evidence that the girl may not have been alone. After uncovering a large sum of money, Moon ends up on the run from a group of hardened killers with a suitcase full of money and a bull’s-eye on his head.

The novel’s action takes place over the course of seven days, and readers watch as Moon spirals deeper and deeper into a psychological meltdown in an attempt to evade his pursuers. The role of John Moon is thus a demanding one, and it is probably safe to assume that a great deal of the movie’s action will revolve around his character. For these reasons, Michael Fassbender is a perfect choice for the role given the intensity and diversity that he can portray onscreen.

Filming for A Single Shot will begin this summer, presumably after Fassbender finishes with David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method (Viggo Mortensen, Kiera Knightley, and Vincent Cassell). For more information on Michael Fassbender, visit the actor’s official IMDb page. For details on Jones’ novel, A Single Shot, you can visit the novel’s page on Amazon.com.
