Ralph Fiennes, Colin Firth, Gary Oldman, and Michael Fassbender Lead TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY
by Brendan Bettinger Posted:July 8th, 2010 at 2:25 pm

Let the Right One In director Tomas Alfredson looks to make his English-language debut with an adaptation of the John Le Carre 1974 spy novel Tinker, Tailor, Solder, Spy. Variety reports that the Swedish director has landed an excellent starring cast of Ralph Fiennes, Colin Firth, Gary Oldman, and Michael Fassbender. Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon) scripted the adaptation, which revolves around the British Secret Intelligence Service in the aftermath of the Cold War.

The evocative atmosphere of Let the Right One In instantly made Alfredson a director to watch, and you can hardly do better Peter Morgan right now if you’re in the market for a sharp script with a political bent given his two recent Oscar nominations for Frost/Nixon and The Queen. But this is the kind of cast that makes you stand up and take notice. Fiennes and Oldman have been reliably great for decades now, and Firth arrives fresh off his acclaimed turn in A Single Man. Meanwhile all the major players in Hollywood are trying to get in on the Fassbender business (most notably X-Men: First Class) after recent breakout roles in Inglourious Basterds, Fish Tank, and Hunger.

In accordance with the setting, most of the parties involved (Fiennes, Firth, Oldman, Morgan) hail from Old Blighty. Throw in a Swedish Alfredson and the German-Irish Fassbender, and that’s quite the roster of international filmmaking talent. Don’t know that there’s another film in production that could top it in that respect.

Le Carre’s source novel was previously adapted into a 1979 seven-episode British series starring Obi-Wan Kenobi himself, Alec Guinness. Here’s the literary plot synopsis via Amazon:

It is now beyond doubt that a mole, implanted decades ago by Moscow Centre, has burrowed his way into the highest echelons of British Intelligence. His treachery has already blown some of its most vital operations and its best networks. It is clear that the double agent is one of its own kind. But which one? George Smiley is assigned to identify him. And once identified, the traitor must be destroyed.

Ralph Fiennes, Colin Firth and Gary Oldman set to star in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Ralph Fiennes, Colin Firth, Gary Oldman and Michael Fassbender have all signed on to star in Tomas Alfredson’s TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY. Alfredson, as you may recall, directed the incredible LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. His latest effort is based on John Le Carre’s novel and is set at the height of the cold war and deals with a spy hunt within British intelligence. The old timers might remember a British TV show of the same name that starred the original Obi Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness).

Despite the useless nuggets of information, I’m not that familiar with the actual story, but I love the cast and I love spy thrillers. We’ve had several attempts lately, but we haven’t really had a good spy thriller come out in a while. I also like the idea of setting this in the late 70′s or early 80′s, where the Russian-USA spy threat was real. Unlike today, where there aren’t any Russian spies in America…oh wait.

Ralph Fiennes Cast In Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy; Fassbender And Firth Confirmed
By Eric Eisenberg: 2010-07-08 18:02:12

Ralph Fiennes Cast In Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy; Fassbender And Firth Confirmed It was reported in early June that Gary Oldman had signed on to play the lead in an adaptation of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, based on the novel by John Le Carré. At the time, Michael Fassbender, Colin Firth and David Thewlis were all in talks to join the project, which will be directed by Let The Right One In's Tomas Alfredson. While only two out of three of those actors made the cut, the film's newest addition is making the film sounds too good to be true.

Variety is reporting that Ralph Fiennes has joined the cast of the spy thriller, and has confirmed that Fassbender and Firth will also be in the fold (though no details have been given about who the three actors will play). In the movie, Oldman will play George Smiley, an aging former intelligence agent brought back in to service when suspicions are raised about a Soviet spy in their midst. The film is set to start production this October in London.

Just from the cast alone this is turning into a must-see movie. Add in the fact that it's based on terrific source material, has a fantastic man at the helm in Alfredson, and has already been successfully adapted with fantastic results back in 1979, what could possibly go wrong to make this film not work?

Ralph Fiennes Joines Tomas Alfredson’s ‘Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy’; Firth, Oldman and Fassbender Confirmed

Posted on Thursday, July 8th, 2010 by Russ Fischer

Let the Right One In director Tomas Alfredson has been at work assembling an adaptation of the novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy from author John Le Carre. A month ago we heard that Gary Oldman was set to star, with possible co-stars Michael Fassbender, Colin Firth and David Thewlis.

Sadly, David Thewlis won’t be part of the lineup, but the other three names are now confirmed along with a new addition: Ralph Fiennes.

Variety says the film will shoot in London in October, but at this point we don’t have any new info about the script by Peter Morgan or the characters that will be associated with the cast.

Tomas Alfredson Nabs An Amazing Cast For 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy'

by Elisabeth Rappe Jul 8th 2010 // 4:32PM

There's nothing like a really good spy movie, and I'm inclined to think that no genre supports a really good ensemble cast half as well as a tight thriller. (Think back to the glory days of the 1970s casts for just a moment. See what I mean?) So this tiny bit in Variety should have every cinema fan drooling, as they're reporting that Ralph Fiennes, Colin Firth, Gary Oldman, and Michael Fassbender have signed onto Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. If the cast isn't enough to whet your appetite, think about them all being directed by Tomas Alfredson of Let the Right One In. Oh, and Peter Morgan wrote the screenplay.

Focus, now. Tinker also has one hell of a pedigree. Those who know their John le Carre recognize that it's based on his 1974 bestseller, and if you know your British television, you know the book also inspired a television show starring Alec Guinness. This is classic, classic stuff. It's unclear whether Tinker will be done as a period piece. The original centered on a British spy hunt for a Soviet mole. Variety implies it's been updated, saying that it's set in the aftermath of the Cold War. So it could be set in the uncertain period of the 1990s, or it could be present day. After all, Salt isn't dispensing with Russian spies. If you've been following your current events, you know they're apparently hanging around, making all our 1980s fears seem crazily relevant again.

I'd go into who is probably playing who, but I've never actually read Tinker and I don't want to spoil the plot for myself or for you. This is going to be a film that will be a joy to watch unfold. Even though filming doesn't begin until October, let's try to wait it out.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy Signs Up an Impressive Cast
Thursday July 8, 2010

The more I read about Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, the more pumped up I get over this film. Variety reports Michael Fassbender, Ralph Fiennes, Colin Firth, and Gary Oldman have just joined the cast of the thriller with Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In - the Swedish version) set to direct from a script by Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon). Any two of the aforementioned elements would have elevated my interest in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, but Oldman, Fassbender, Fiennes and Firth together in one movie makes this one a must-see in my book.

The Working Title film is based on John Le Carre's novel and revolves around a spy hunt inside British Intelligence. Filming is expected to begin in October.

Cast Confirmed For Tinker, Tailor
Oldman, Firth, Fiennes and more set
Source: Variety

We were already primed to be excited for the new film version of John Le Carré’s classic espionage novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy, but now that a chunk of the main cast is locked on place, we’re even more eager to see this one come to life. Why? Try Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Ralph Fiennes and Michael Fassbender all jumping aboard.

Oldman, Firth and Fassbender were all touted as likely stars last month, and now Variety reports that they’ve all signed on, the film is just that much more enticing.

And while David Thewlis appears to have dropped out of the running, Fiennes is hardly a second-rate replacement. Plus, there are likely more announcements to come, and it’s always possible that Thewlis is still haggling over a deal to appear.

Let the Right One in director Thomas Alfredson is the man charged with getting the story on to the big screen, with The Queen’s Peter Morgan writing the script.

Le Carré’s novel is the first of his Karla trilogy (anyone else hoping for a franchise if the first movie is a success?) and follows the hunt for a mole within MI6. Smiley (which Oldman is likely to be playing) is among those suspected, but his keen mind and quick wits soon help him dig his way out of trouble.

Tinker, Tailor was last adapted by the BBC back in 1979, with Alec Guinness as Smiley. With Alfredson set to kick off shooting in October, we could well see a big screen version that lives up to the reputation of that TV adaptation…

Fassbender, Firth, and Fiennes join Gary Oldman in Tomas Alfredsson’s TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY

Confirming a rumor over a month old, Tomas Alfredsson’s next film, an adaptation of John Le Carre’s spy novel, TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY, has just built one hell of a cast.

According to Variety, Michael Fassbender, Colin Firth, and Ralph Fiennes (the former two actors were connected to the film one month prior), have been confirmed for roles in the hotly-anticipated project from the director of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN.

The film is being penned by Peter Morgan, and follows an operative who must take out a Soviet spy in the British Intelligence Service. Personally, while this premise and cast would be stuff to really get interested in, the real selling point here is Alfredsson himself. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is a stunning film and one that, while not really pointing towards the mind of a man behind a spy film, does have the sense of atmosphere that could make for a very interesting project, similar to a film like this year’s upcoming George Clooney film, THE AMERICAN. I see direct parallels between the two projects, which makes me think this is going to be one hell of a sought after film.

I'm sorry, let's repeat that greatness again. You've got the likes of Fiennes, Oldman, Firth and Fassbender all on the same feature. The Peter Morgan script, based off the novel by John le Carré, is set after the Cold war where a former British spy is requested to find a Russian spy within his previous work place.Principal photography for the Working Title Films production will begin this October over in London.

Fassbender recently appeared in the highly underperforming "Jonah Hex", but you can see him kick the hell out of other people in "Centurion", out on VOD this July 30th. Colin Firth recently appeared in Tom Ford's "A Single Man".

‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’ Snags Impressive Cast

Ralph Fiennes, Colin Firth, Gary Oldman and Michael Fassbender have all joined Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, an espionage thriller from the director of Let the Right One In.

Just because a novel has been adapted once before doesn’t mean that it should never be adapted again. Such is the case with Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, a 1974 best-selling novel by John le Carré (The Constant Gardener). It’s already been adapted into a 1970s British TV series starring Alec Guinness but another adaptation is on the way.

Variety reports that an impressive foursome of actors have joined the cast of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy: Ralph Fiennes, Colin Firth, Gary Oldman and Michael Fassbender.

Although nothing should be assumed at this point, we can speculate that the actors will play the roles in the order their names are listed – i.e. Fiennes as the Tinker, Firth as the Tailor, Oldman as the Soldier and Fassbender as the Spy. However, it’s PURE SPECULATION until we hear official word about who is playing what role.

The actors are the last crucial pieces to fall into place, as Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In) is already confirmed as the director and the script was written by Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon). I don’t know about you, but this film has my money already.

In case you’re wondering, here’s the plot of the source material:

Based on John Le Carre’s 1974 bestseller, story is set in the aftermath of the Cold War and involves a spy hunt within the highest echelons of the British Secret Intelligence Service.

Normally I’m not overly enthused about these types of films but with that list of talent I don’t know how anyone could possibly resist this one. Perhaps it will fill the void that the in-limbo Bond 23 has left, which Morgan also wrote written the script for, coincidentally. Funny how the movie business works, isn’t it?

What do you think of the cast Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy has snagged? Would you be interested if those actors and filmmakers weren’t involved?

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy will start shooting this October in London but it doesn’t yet have a release date.

I Am Actually Properly Excited About This One.

Ben and I adore George Smiley. If you haven’t seen the BBC TV series ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ and ‘Smiley’s People’, you should. It’s how we wish TV was still made. Alec Guinness in the role of his life as a retired British spy being brought back to find a mole in the British Secret Intelligence Service, the story takes its time, with lengthy scenes of dialogue pulsating with tension for their entirety. It is quite simply brilliant, as indeed are the books by John Le Carré.

So to hear they’re going to make a film of it? Ooh. Bad. Must be bad. Surely. It’s going to be bad. And then I read (again via the good folks of Slash Film) that it’s being directed by Tomas Alfredson, who made the brilliant ‘Let The Right One In’, which tonally is great for ‘Tinker, Tailor…’. And it’s going to star Gary Oldman as Smiley. f&#! Yeah. Gary Oldman back being a f#%@#&! brilliant actor in a f#%@#&! brilliant role. And the supporting cast includes Ralph Fiennes, Michael Fassbender and Colin Firth, who I presume will be the other three main chaps at ‘the circus’, as they used to call the SIS (which if the TV series is a guide, is because it was based at Cambridge Circus in London, which is ironic, what with the Cambridge Spies scandal, which is what Le Carré was riffing on with ‘Tinker, Tailor…’). Oh and it’s been written by Peter Morgan wot did ‘The Queen’ (and also ‘The Damned Utd’, which is an enjoyable film but a bloody amazing book*), which is the smallest “yes!” from me about the whole thing, but it’s still a yes.

Gary f#%@#&! Oldman. Smiley. Brilliant director and supporting cast. This better be bloody brilliant. I want to buy a ticket already.

* (When it first came out I read it, loved it, showed it to Ben and Barrington. They loved it. “F*****’ Leeds” – a phrase much-used in the book, not once in the film. Anyway. We loved it. We tried to option it. Surprisingly they went with the team wot made ‘The Queen’ rather than three unknown film-makers then making a film about wanking off a bear. Don’t know why.)

Ralph Fiennes Cast In Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy; Fassbender And Firth Confirmed

It was reported in early June that Gary Oldman had signed on to play the lead in an adaptation of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, based on the novel by John Le Carré. At the time, Michael Fassbender, Colin Firth and David Thewlis were all in talks to join the project, which will be directed by Let The Right One In’s Tomas Alfredson. While only two out of three of those actors made the cut, the film’s newest addition is making the film sounds too good to be true.

Add in the fact that it’s based on terrific source material, has a fantastic man at the helm in Alfredson, and has already been successfully adapted with fantastic results back in 1979, what could possibly go wrong to make this film not work?

Gary Oldman starts filming as George Smiley

The Cold War ended decades ago, but it’s being cranked up again in London as Gary Oldman flies in to play George Smiley, the small, podgy spy charged with unearthing a mole who has embedded himself in the highest echelons of the secret service. Tomas Alfredson will begin filming Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in the next few weeks for Working Title Films. Joining Oldman will be Ciaran

Hinds, Jared Harris, Colin Firth and Benedict Cumberatch as British operatives, and Tom Hardy, who will play tricky Ricky Tarr, who helps Smiley put the pieces of the jigsaw together. Michael Fassbender was at one point going to play Tarr, but he’s busy on Matthew Vaughn’s film X-Men: First Class, which started shooting this week out at Pinewood.
