Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien’ Prequel Reportedly Titled ‘Paradise,’ Filming Not Delayed

Posted on Wednesday, December 8th, 2010 by Russ Fischer

There’s some big news on Ridley Scott‘s two-part prequel to his 1979 film Alien. First up, time to kill off the rumor that the project has been delayed: Fox says that there is no delay. (The interesting reason for the rumor is after the break.)

But more important, a report says that the first film is called Paradise, and that cast sought by Ridley Scott includes Michael Fassbender and Michelle Yeoh. More info on the character details and plot of the film are also after the break. And note that there are possible spoilers in the info that follows.

First up: the title. Vulture does not explain any context for the title, but doesn’t refer to the film as Alien: Paradise or anything like that. Just Paradise. But the report does say,

We’re told that Paradise reboots the original Alien franchise, in that the story follows a group of space travelers who encounter a monstrous alien creature that picks them off, one-by-one.

That’s less than inspiring, but could be a broad generalization. I hope it is a broad generalization. Because while I was nervous about a film that explored the ‘space jockey’ from Alien (pictured above), I’m far more nervous about something that boils down to a reboot. The news that Damon Lindelof‘s script revisions were well-received was good, but now…

So let’s talk about casting. Vulture reports that Leonardo DiCaprio was sought for the lead role at one point, and efforts to work out a schedule that would see this film shot after Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar are what resulted in the rumored shooting delay. But Mr. DiCaprio hasn’t been cast, and the schedule remains as it was before the rumor. The idea that Ridley Scott would look for someone like Leonardo DiCaprio is interesting — what part in the film would be well-suited for him? Even when he’s part of an ensemble cast (The Departed) he has a tendency to stand out. I don’t see it, but then I haven’t read the script.

There’s also word that the director wanted Michael Fassbender for a character called David, who is an android and precursor to the Ash and Bishop characters from Alien and Aliens. But Mr. Fassbender’s quote has risen astronomically, and he may be out of the running for now. Too bad if so — I’d love to see Robo-Fassbender.

There’s also a character called Vickers, “a 40-something, tough-but-sexy woman,” for which Michelle Yeoh is being sought. If you read the spoilerish script details we posted a while back, you might guess, as I do, that this is the Vasquez-like character mentioned there, assuming those details were correct.

Other characters:

* Elizabeth Shaw: the main female lead, for which Noomi Rapace remains a front-runner.
* An unnamed ‘older businessman along for the ride’. Shades of Burke from Aliens?
* Engineer 1: a character to be played by a very tall actor who will be repalced by CGI, a la Gollum in Lord of the Rings. Will Doug Jones be hired?

Alien Prequel Gets A Title, Michael Fassbender And Michelle Yeoh Being Sought For Roles

It looks like the news that Ridley Scott's Alien prequel being delayed might have been premature. There is also news that the film has received a proper title. And, we have possible story and character details along with word that Scott is looking to cast Fassbender and Yeoh in key roles..

Vulture(Ny Mag) have an exclusive on the Alien prequel, and the article is packed with information. Firstly the reckon that production on the movie will not be delayed at all. Originally Scott wanted Leonardo Dicaprio for the lead role and was going to push back the release dates to accommodate him. But that's not happening now and things are back on schedule.

Next up, we no longer have to refer to the project as "untitled Ridley Scott Alien prequel", apparently it will be called simply: Paradise

Story wise..

We're told that Paradise reboots the original Alien franchise, in that the story follows a group of space travelers who encounter a monstrous alien creature that picks them off, one by one. Since there's no working budget yet on the film, formal offers have not gone out to actors, but our spies tell us that several are at the top of Scott's list for leading roles.

Sounds very similar to the first Alien to me. And no mention of The Space Jockey? Anyway, some of the names associated with those lead roles; Apparently Michael Fassbender is being looked at for the role of David the android, an early version of Bishop from the previous films. Vulture report that there have been problems because of high fee demands from Fassbender's reps but that the talks may sort themselves out. Scott is also keen to give the role of “Vickers” — a fortysomething, tough-but-sexy woman — to crouching tigress Michelle Yeoh.. The site also reports that Noomi Rapace is still the front runner for the female lead of Elizabeth Shaw.

And finally..

There are other interesting roles, including an older businessman along for the ride, but we’re most curious about the part of Engineer 1, who we’re told is to be "played" by a six-foot-five-inch actor, but will actually be entirely CGI, à la Gollum in The Lord of the Rings films.

A lot to take in there. And there is more! Be sure to click the link back to Vulture below for the full story. Lets hope this is on the level and Fassbender and Yeoh get those roles. Along with Rapace we would have a hell of a cast for this one.

Prequel To Be Called Alien Paradise, Shoot In February
December 8th, 2010 by Brendon Connelly

There’s probably more misinformation out there online regarding Ridley Scott’s imminent Alien prequel* than there is genuine, solid fact. Stories have bubbled up in the last few days that the film was both being delayed for a year or so, and that the reason for these delays were dispute over the film’s rating. Better still, one of these tall tales reported that Fox and Scott had now settled their disagreement by settling on an R-rating for the film, but a 3D only release, bypassing 2D cinema screens altogether.

Please pass the salt.

We’ve heard a few things about the production ourselves, and now a report has turned up at Vulture that echoes – in large – the version of events as we understood them.

Here’s how they put it:

We’re told that Paradise reboots the original Alien franchise, in that the story follows a group of space travelers who encounter a monstrous alien creature that picks them off, one by one. Since there’s no working budget yet on the film, formal offers have not gone out to actors, but our spies tell us that several are at the top of Scott’s list for leading roles.

These actors, they say, are Noomi Rapace for the lead heroine; Michael Fassbender for an android called David; and Michelle Yeoh for Vickers, another tough chick. Any of those may or may not appear while, despite having been in talks for a role, Leonardo Di Caprio now certainly won’t be joining the film.

And, frankly, I’m glad about that.

Vulture also report on a character called Engineer 1 which they say will be a full CG motion-capture creation. We knew that motion capture was going to be employed in the film, but had no idea how. Our sources did seem to be suggesting that there’d be more than one mo-cap character, however, so I’m checking in with them again to see what else we can find out now Vulture have blown the lid off the story.

Where our info clashes with the Vulture piece is over the shoot date. They’re saying March, and we’re thinking February, possibly early February, on the basis of a pair of e-mail tip-offs. We may all be singing from the same hymn sheet and not know it, however, as second-unit and FX plate work might start in February, with the principal shoot set for kick-off in March.

Everybody who has spoken to me about this film is claiming that Ridley really has fire in his belly and wants to make it quite incredible. Fingers crossed for him – for all of us.

*There might not be two. I’m going single for now, will go plural when the second one is given a greenlight.

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/archives/as_you_were_alien_prequel_not_called_paradise_doesnt_have_a_cast_only_one_m/

As You Were: ‘Alien’ Prequel Not Called ‘Paradise,’ Doesn’t Have A Cast, Only One Movie

So, rumors started flying at the end of last week that the “Alien” prequel, or prequels, which has been set for most of the year to be Ridley Scott‘s next film, would possibly be delayed for as much as a year, despite talk that the film would be getting under way shortly. As we reported yesterday, the reports of a delay were inaccurate, particularly as the film is yet to be officially green-lit.

Vulture, however, had a different take, reporting a series of rumors that, if they turned out to be true, would have been pretty intriguing. Firstly, they suggest that reports of a delay came only from the brief possibility that Leonardo DiCaprio, who previously worked with Scott on “Body of Lies,” could have been cast in the film, and was considering following up Clint Eastwood‘s “J. Edgar” with the sci-fi epic.

DiCaprio is supposedly ruled out, but Vulture did name a couple of other possibilities—Noomi Rapace has long been thought to be the front-runner for the lead role, who the site name as ‘Elizabeth Shaw,’ but also suggest that Michelle Yeoh has been linked to the role of ‘Vickers,’ and that Scott had been interested in Michael Fassbender to play an android named ‘David,’ but the “Hunger” star had priced himself out of the job.

Vulture also suggested that the film had a title, “Paradise,” that it served as a ‘reboot’ of the franchise, and that it was closer to the original film, featuring a group of space travelers (also including Engineer 1, a character who would be created entirely through CGI), being picked off one by one by a space beastie. The only problem? Little, if any, of this appears to be true.

Chris Petrikin, the Senior Vice-President for Corporate Communication at 20th Century Fox, took to his Twitter account, saying that “I don’t know where to begin to correct what is being written about a certain Ridley Scott project,” as well as categorically denying that the title was “Paradise”—as if the fact that the studio would never release the film without the word “Alien” in the title wasn’t enough of a clue. At the very best, “Paradise” is the alias for the production, much as, say, “The Dark Knight” shot under the title “Rory’s First Kiss.” Perhaps the biggest clarification is that only one prequel is planned—while it’s reported for some time that Scott was planning a pair of back-to-back films, this seems to have been a case of a game of Telephone.

We’ve also been told by a source close to the production that ‘some’ of the casting thoughts reported by Vulture were “just plain wrong,” so don’t hold your breath for Michelle Yeoh or Michael Fassbender appearing in the final product. It’s possible that there’s some basis of truth to Vulture‘s report—we wouldn’t be surprised if Scott Free is trying to get a package together with key talent on board to present to Fox in order to get a green light—but with much of what they reported being denied (and, yes, while studios do sometimes deny accurate reports, this one seems fairly categorical), it’s to be taken with a giant heap of salt.

All this said, the film is in development and with any luck, we’ll get some actual concrete news on the project soon.

Charlize Theron Out Of Eastwood’s J.EDGAR May Star In ALIEN Prequel

Published on: 10th January, 2011

Charlize Theron will not be starring in Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar. Instead, she may be starring in Ridley Scott‘s Alien prequel.

According to Vulture, Theron was not as interested in starring in the biopic as her agents at Endeavor led on. She was attached to star as Hoover’s longtime personal secretary Helen Gandy. Now she has the task of apologizing to Eastwood for opting out of the film which technically she was never really interested in.

Her departure has freed and 20th Century Fox is hoping to nab Theron to star in a role the Alien prequel. The big question is will she star in the lead or in the role of Vickers previously thought to be going to Michelle Yeoh. Ridley Scott has been dead set on Noomi Rapace (Swedish version of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trilogy) starring in the lead as Elizabeth Shaw.

Vulture has stated that insiders close to the project have said that Fox execs are concerned with putting Rapace as the lead in the big budget film. Fox is reportedly currently rewriting the role making it a meater role to attract Theron or someone else of her stature. The new version of the Alien script is expected to arrive later this week for Theron to make a final decision.

I am happy to know that the Alien prequel is getting off the ground. Theron is a better fit for this type of film. I would rather see Rapace in a role over Yeoh personally. If Theron takes the lead perhaps, Rapace could play the part of Vickers. The movie is shaping up to be better with each bit of breaking news. Michael Fassbender is likely to be signed to star as an Android, I just wonder if there will be any bad ass knife play like in Aliens.

Either way I am happy about Theron’s choice whatever the final decision is. What are your thoughts on this news?

Do we have a female lead for the Alien prequel?
by "Caffeinated" Clint (Tuesday, January 11th, 2011 at 3:39 am)

First things first, we do – contrary to reports – have an “Alien” prequel. Maybe even two. Rumours that the Ridley Scott directed Space-jockey yarn has been either delayed or shut down didn’t register too high on the truth meter.

A couple of hours back Alicia wrote that Charlize Theron has pulled out of Eastwood’s “J.Edgar” in favour of playing the female lead in Uni’s “Snow White and the Huntsman”. But over at Vulture, they say otherwise; according to the New York based outfit, Theron’s actually considering the “Alien” prequel – and that’s why she’s unable to play in the Hoover biopic.

Scribe Damon Lindelof is said to have written the film’s lead female character so that it’s ”larger and befitting”. Theron will receive the script next week and will soon after decide whether she wants to do the pic.

The only person seemingly against the hiring of Theron is director Scott. Scott, as we’ve heard in the past, is keen to have Swede Noomi Rapace (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”) play the female lead – with Michael Fassbender and Michelle Yeoh also in there – but Fox, understandably, want a bigger name to drive the craft into orbit.

Charlize Theron Joining Alien Prequel?
While casting and auditions should be underway for Ridley Scott's Alien Prequel nothing official has been announced. We know that Ridley's choice for the lead role of Elizabeth Shaw is Noomi Rapace but Fox doesn't seem sold yet. Michael Fassbender (X-Men First Class, Inglourious Basterds) is up for the role of David an early version of the Bishop android. Ridley wanted Michelle Yeoh in the role of Vikers but Vulture is reporting the studio is looking at Charlize Theron instead. Fox is going as far as rewriting the role to make it larger, I expect to attract Theron to commit to the film/films. Charlize just dropped out of Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar Hover bio-pic which could allow her to make the movies.

I believe having Theron in the cast would help the studio agree to hire Noomi. Having two excellent award caliber actresses could reel in more big names to round out the cast. I think Michelle Yeoh is a great actress but has already played a similar role in Danny Boyle's Sunshine.

Charlize Theron may fight aliens instead of joining Clint Eastwood’s Hoover biopic

by Liam on January 11, 2011

charlize theron 2011 Last week Clint Eastwood said that he expected Charlize Theron would join his John Edgar Hoover biopic J. Edgar alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer and Judi Dench. The actress was said to be playing Helen Gandy, a Justice Department file clerk Hoover selected as his personal secretary at the age of 21, and who wound up working for him for over 54 years.

However according to a new report Theron may not be joining the film after all, and 20th Century Fox are after her for Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel.

From Vulture:

Apparently, Theron’s reps at William Morris Endeavor were a bit ahead of the curve on their client’s willingness to star as Hoover’s longtime personal secretary Helen Gandy, putting the Oscar winner in the slightly awkward position of having to apologize to Eastwood for backing away from a role she never actually planned on accepting. All has since been smoothed over with Eastwood, but it’s also opened the door for 20th Century Fox. The studio is hoping the newly-available Theron can solve one of its more pressing problems: Casting its Alien prequel.

The site says Ridley Scott wants Noomi Rapace (Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) as his leading lady, but the studio wants an actress who is more well known. The role of Elizabeth Shaw is apparently being beefed up for Theron, who will get the new version of the Alien script sometime this week and make her decision soon.

Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class) and Michelle Yeoh (Memoirs of a Geish) are also thought to be up for roles as crew members, but nothing is official yet.

Update: Deadline says that Naomi Watts and Amy Adams are being looked at to replace Theron, and the actress may be about to sign on for Snow White and the Huntsman so Fox may have to make that Alien script a bit beefier.

Seem Keen To Secure Charlize Theron For Ridley Scott’s Alien Prequel

January 11th, 2011 by Brendon Connelly
So keen are 20th Century Fox to land Charlize Theron for a key role in the upcoming Alien prequel that they’re having the script rewritten to make the part beefier and, supposedly, more attractive. This is, at least, according to Vulture. Last time they reported on the film they drew some fire from Fox honchos and cheeses, calling them out on apparent inaccuracy, but did have a lot of details right.

The long and the short of their new story is this: Ridley Scott is dead set on casting some actors who happen to be less bankable names and has Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Michelle Yeoh in mind for three of the key characters. Fox want somebody more starry in there, so it seems that the role Scott would have given to Yeoh will instead be given to Theron.

Well, if she takes it. Vulture say:

Fox is having the role rewritten so that it?s larger and befitting, if not of Theron, than at least of someone of Theron?s stature. We’re also told that the South African beauty should get the new version of theAlien script sometime this week and make her decision soon.

In the meantime, she’s already passed on Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar.

The second-tier of implication in this story is that Fox have given Scott the go-ahead to cast Noomi Rapace. Now let’s sit back and see how many of these three actors actually sign up.

Rumor: Fox Wants Charlize Theron For Alien Prequel
by Robert Saucedo - January 11, 2011

Charlize Theron, who recently dropped out of the running for Clint Eastwood’s biopic about J. Edger Hoover, is reportedly being sought to star in Ridley Scott’s upcoming prequel to Alien.

For the film’s main character, Scott is still seeking to cast Scandinavian actress Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) but Fox is hoping to offer to Theron a role that had Scott had originally had Michelle Yeoh in mind for. The role is being rewritten this week to beef up the part and make it more attractive to somebody of Theron’s acting stature.

Michael Fassbender is still in negotiations to join the cast as one of the series’ trademark androids.

There’s been a lot of rumors floating around the internet as to what, exactly, Scott’s prequels will be about. Some of the rumors, including new aliens who use humans in the same way humans use cows, make me hopeful that this film will not only rejuvenate the Alien franchise but also rejuvenate Scott’s directing career. Theron is a fine actress and, if she should join, will be great alongside Rapace and Fassbender.

Charlize Theron In For The Alien Prequel?
Tuesday, January 11th, 2011 at 8:00am

* by Josh Wigler

Director Ridley Scott’s search for the leading lady in his Alien prequel is ongoing, and a new name has emerged in the rumor mill: Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron.

But before we continue, a note. Today’s Alien update comes courtesy of Vulture, and while the site has gotten plenty of scoops right in the past, they received significant backlash for their last Alien-related news item that suggested actors Michael Fassbender and Michelle Yeoh were circling roles, that the movie would center on a space crew ala Scott’s first film, that it would be called Paradise and a whole bunch of other items that were publicly denied by one of the film’s producers.

Still, in their latest update — which suggests that Fox executives want Theron or an actress with a similar pedigree to take on the expanded role of Vickers, because they’re nervous about Scott’s desire to cast Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Noomi Rapace in the lead role of Elizabeth Shaw — there is absolutely no denial of the previous report. In fact, aspects of that report are mentioned as though they are still completely true. Sounds like Vulture is sticking to their story while adding the new Theron wrinkle. With any luck, we’ll start learning some real answers fairly soon.

Charlize Theron Rules Out ‘Hoover’ Movie, But May Star in ‘Alien’ Prequel
By Gig Patta on January 10, 2011

It’s one or the other.

Actress Charlize Theron will not star in Clint Eastwood-directed "J. Edgar" biopic. According to rumors, she was considered to play J. Edgar Hoover’s longtime personal secretary Helen Gandy.

According to Vulture’s unnamed sources, she is trying to arrange a schedule for join the cast for Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel.

Vulture wrote that “Fox execs are nervous about pinning Scott’s costly CGI movie on such lesser-known actors like [Noomi] Rapace and, should a deal be made with him Michael Fassbender or [Michelle] Yeoh.”

Last month, the site reported Fassbender was in negotiations to play an android crewman and Yeoh to play Vickers, a forty-something, tough-but-sexy crewmember.

Truthfully, it’s hard to pinpoint the truth from these rumors. Vulture was also the same site that reported the title of this movie would be “Paradise,” which was completely false. So for now, let’s file this under rumors.

Charlize Theron To Star In Alien Prequel?

G4 TV - TheFeed

Could Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien prequel have its new sexy, ass-kicking heroine in Charlize Theron? Perhaps, if the recent report from New York Magazine’s Vulture is correct. (This time.) According to the rumors we’ve been reading for the past few months, Sweedish actress Noomi Rapace was said to be the front-runner for the role. The star of the original Sweedish language versions of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and its sequels, the alleged role in Scott’s return to the franchise would have been her big breakthrough into the US market. However, according to Vulture, 20th Century Fox (whose creative difficulties with Scott on this film are already legendary,) are of the mindset that this film, whose budget (according to previous reports,) could exceed $250 million, will need a bankable star. If true, then Theron could be leading what is described as a more multicultural space crew with names like future Magneto, Michael Fassbender, Asian femme fatale Michelle Yeoh, and a CGI Android character called Engineer 1, among others. However, the report is far from confirmed, and the source, Vulture did recently get taken to the woodshed by Fox Senior VP Chris Petrikin after they reported some bad info about the film’s supposed title. So, where does that leave the film?

Theron is said to have dropped out of appearing in an upcoming Clint Eastwood-directed biopic about notorious FBI Director J. Edgar Hooover and apparently 20th Century Fox has viewed this sudden vacancy as a huge opportunity for the somewhat stalled Alien prequel. While Theron’s work has been primarily in drama, she does have some action films on her resume such as 2005′s Æon Flux, the adaptation of the cult animated series that appeared on MTV. The beautiful Oscar-winning actress’ billing on the marquee would undoubtedly raise the profile of the film and help justify its budget. Interestingly enough, Theron was also just confirmed to play the Evil Queen in the upcoming live-action Snow White and the Huntsman, a film which may be joined by would-be Alien cast-mate Michael Fassbender.

However, the real story still remains the conflict of interests between Ridley Scott and Fox. It was clear from Scott’s initial (likely unfiltered) interviews about the prequel project, which has already been cut down to one film from his original vision of two, that his artistic vision was in direct conflict with the realities of the costs and viability of the franchise itself. The franchise had been quite watered-down with the recent Alien vs. Predator films, yet in his excitement, Scott believed that he could bring it back in such a way that its box-office gross would challenge Avatar. Yet, Scott (along with any respectable fan,) wanted a film with hard-R rating, but as many know, that severely limits an audience, and as evidenced by the last less-than-stellar outing in 2007′s Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, which did go with an R-rating, the film found itself without much of an audience. It will be interesting to see where this behind-the-scenes battle takes the direction of the film.

How is Charlize Theron sounding as your new (possibly) Ripley-like heroine?

Ridley Scott Argues with Studio Over Lead Actors for Alien Prequel

* January 12, 2011
* |
* By: Tim Reeves

Legendary director Ridley Scott is bashing heads with his bosses at 20th Century Fox over who should be given lead roles in his forthcoming Alien prequel.

Scott has expressed an interest in securing Noomi Rapace (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) for the prequels lead character, Elizabeth Shaw. He's also close to signing Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) as an android and Michelle Yeoh as tough ("but sexy") crew member, Vickers.

However, Scott's desire for a lesser known, more multicultural crew is sending the Fox execs into a panic, forcing them to insist that the Vickers role go to a far mar well-known actress. In this instance, they're approaching Charlize Theron and are even rewriting the script to expand the part, as befitting an actress of her stature.

Theron has already turned down a lead role in Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar Hoover biopic (alongside Leonardo DiCaprio) which has lead to the studio putting more pressure on her to take the Alien prequel role and soothe their furrowed brows.

What we do know about the prequel (or prequels) is that it is set around the year 2085 - 30 years before the events in the first film - and will be filmed in face-hugging 3D.

Scott has stated that the design of the Alien would be re-envisioned and the theme of the movie is based on "gods and [...] engineers of space". Let's hope he and Fox can shake hands and agree on the cast, so he can actually go ahead and make the movie.

Ridley Scott Cancels ALIEN Prequel – Announces PROMETHEUS Starring Noomi Rapace

* January 15, 2011 12:15 am

Huge news breaking out of Deadline tonight…

Ridley Scott has cancelled the Alien Prequel he has been working on for the past year. Well… kind of.

It seems somewhere down the pre-production line Scott and 20th Century Fox decided to go in a different direction with their sci-project and have today boldly announced Prometheus, an ORIGINAL SCI-FI PROJECT but one that’s based on the same Damon Lindelof script, same basic idea as mapped out by Jon Spaihts and it’ll be a similar film to Alien but it won’t have any connections at all to the franchise.

Noomi Rapace (long-time Scott’s first choice) will lead the five role ensemble as scientist Elisabeth Shaw with Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron both circling the other big feminine role, the tough but mega-hot Vickers. There’s no word on Michelle Yeoh or Michael Fassbender who Scott wished to cast previously for two of the other roles but it’s being reported that there’s three major male parts, so maybe Yeoh is out?

Prometheus has been set a March 9th, 2012 release date. Scott says;

While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the singular tale I’d been searching for, and finally return to this genre that’s so close to my heart.

In classic Greek mythology Prometheus was an intelligent Titan who stole fire from Zeus and give it to the Mortals but was punished for doing so by being bound to a rock whilst an eagle ate his liver, only for it to be grown back and eaten the next day and so on and so on. He is also of course blamed for creating man from clay, or something. It’s been a while since I was at school but clearly there’s a clue in the title of how the new movie will go.

Lindelof says;

“In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots, I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley’s vision was for this movie. It’s daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects. When I sat in a movie theater as a kid, feet raised off the floor for fear that something might grab my ankles, I never dreamed in my wildest imagination I would one day get to collaborate with the man responsible for it. Working alongside him has been nothing short of a dream come true.”

All the pieces for Prometheus should now quickly fall into place (so expect casting soon) as it will need to film this spring to meet it’s March release date next year. Dariusz Wolski (Alice in Wonderland, POTC 4) will shoot in 3D using the RED Epic cameras and legendary Alien creature designer H.R. Ginger is rumoured to be on board.

So a lot to take in here…. breathe. I would love to hear your reactions to this news… surely we all think this is a pretty awesome turn of events?

Ridley Scott no longer needs to worry about making continuity work with a film he made three decades ago (!) and the sequels that came after it and I imagine a huge weight has left his shoulders… he now has the freedom to take his story in any direction he wishes. And of course, characters can survive where they previously couldn’t and he can build this into a franchise that could be a 21st century version of Alien rather than re-tread old ground.

Michael Fassbender joins Ridley Scott’s Prometheus

Starring opposite Noomi Rapace

By Josh Winning | Jan 27th 2011

Michael Fassbender has jumped on board Ridley Scott’s mysterious new sci-fi Prometheus.

The actor has reportedly been involved in negotiations since way back when the film was being touted as an Alien prequel, but has only just been able to sign on.

He will apparently play an android, which could be one of those links to the "DNA" of Alien that Ridley Scott has hinted at.

Previously, Swedish Girl With The Dragon Tattoo star Noomi Rapace signed to play the film’s lead, while (rumour alert) Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie are reportedly both interested in the second female lead, Vickers.

Prometheus’ release date has now changed from March to 8 June, 2012, meaning Fox are now viewing this is something of a summer tentpole. Could it be a sci-fi brain fry to rival even Inception?

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus put back, Michael Fassbender linked

The film that was once the Alien prequel, Prometheus, will be arriving a few months later than originally thought. Plus: new casting news…

Published on Jan 27, 2011

Once upon a time, as you probably know, the project that has now become Prometheus was mooted to be the long-in-gestation prequel to Alien. However, earlier this month, the project migrated into a standalone science fiction film, still to be directed by Ridley Scott.

It was scheduled, at that point, for a release in March 2012, but 20th Century Fox has now confirmed that the movie has been put back to the summer.

That, you have to say, is a bold move. Prometheus has a new release date of June 8th 2012, and that puts in slap bang in the middle of one of the most competitive summer movie seasons on record.

While there's no other movie thus far that is coming out on the same day, Prometheus will be arriving in the same month as the sequel to the Star Trek reboot, horror-thriller Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Pixar's Brave. At the end of May, meanwhile, is Battleship and Men In Black 3, with the Spider-Man reboot likely to still be doing business, too.

Meanwhile, on the casting side, the latest addition to the line-up is the excellent Michael Fassbender. According to Heat Vision, he's down to play an android. He'll be starring in the film alongside the already cast Noomi Rapace.

Alien Prequel Prometheus Finds its Male Lead

Let's face it. Sharing the screen with an actor as talented as Dragon Tattoo's Noomi Rapace is no easy task. She needs a co-star who's not only up to the challenge, but has the acting chops to pull it off. Director Ridley Scott has found his choice for just such a co-star.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Michael Fassbender (pictured right; 300, Eden Lake, Jonah Hex, X-Men: First Class) will star opposite Rapace in Prometheus, Fox's sci-fi project that was once an Alien prequel.

Fox will be giving the film a a high-profile summer release of June 8th, 2012.

The initial draft of the script was written by Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour) from Ridley’s idea. Damon Lindelof ("Lost", Star Trek) and Scott have since been working together on the current version, which has expanded the story into new directions. We hear they were instructed to "go off and come up with what they want" using the 'Alien DNA'. Though story details are being closely guarded, Ridley explained the outlines of the film and its genesis as follows: "While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn't be more pleased to have found the singular tale I'd been searching for, and finally return to this genre that's so close to my heart."

Look for more soon!

Michael Fassbender has reportedly signed on for the film.

Ridley Scott has taken the reigns for the Alien “prequel.” However, he recently admitted that though the film would definitely be influenced and have traces of Alien, it is definitely going to be an original work, which he has titled Prometheus.

Originally, the film was scheduled for a March 2012 release date, but now Scott has reportedly shifted the released date to have a summer 2012 opening date.

Michael Fassbender has recently signed on to star in the film. Fassbender appeared in last year’s Quentin Tarantino film, Inglourious Basterds. He is also set to star as Mr. Rochester in the upcoming adaptation of Jane Eyre, and he will appear as a young Magneto in X-Men: First Class.

Also co-starring in Prometheus with Fassbender is Noomi Rapace. Rapace made headlines for playing Lisbeth Salander, the main character in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the two other films in the series of Swedish films. She will also appear in the sequel to Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law.

Fassbender channeling his inner android in Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus'

* January 26th, 2011 10:18 pm ET

Only a couple of weeks ago, Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' was an entirely different film altogether. It was to work as a prequel to 'Alien,' Scott's first in the venerable series, but with very little warning, it became what it is today, a sci-fi film with its plot shrouded in mystery. Scott has promised, however, that it will have "'Alien' DNA."

Michael Fassbender, who is finishing up work on 'X-Men: First Class,' has joined the cast of Scott's film alongside the previously announced, Noomi Rapace. (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) Rapace is said to be playing a scientist, Elizabeth Shaw. All that's known about Fassbender's role is that he'll be playing an android.

When the film was first announced, it was said that it would have five major roles available. With Rapace and Fassbender in two of them, that leaves three.

In addition to the news of Fassbender joining the cast, the release date for 'Prometheus' was changed today. It was at first scheduled to come out in March, 2012, but has opted for a summer release of June 8, 2012.

Having been speculated about for moths, THR reports that Michael Fassbender has officially signed on to star in Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus”, an original sci-fi epic that sprung out of discussions of an “Alien” prequel. Fassbender will play an android. Noomi Rapace was recently announced as the female lead of the film, a character named Elizabeth Shaw, after a long period of speculation as well. No word yet on whether Charlize Theron or Angelina Jolie will be jumping on board as the character of Vickers.

This also takes Fassbender, one of our 20 faces to watch in 2011, out of the running of “Snow White and the Huntsman”, a role that he was reportedly a front-runner for. He also recently made his debut as Erik Lensshr aka Magneto in the first set of stills from “X-Men: First Class”, which comes out on June 3rd. Before that he will star as the equally iconic Mr. Rochester in a new adaptation of “Jane Eyre” opposite Mia Wasikowska in the title role.

Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' Gets Michael Fassbender and New Release Date

The 'Inglourious Basterds' actor is tapped to star opposite Noomi Rapace as Android in the sci-fi project that was once an 'Alien' prequel.

Ridley Scott is moving forward with his newly announced film "Prometheus" by adding a cast member. Michael Fassbender has been tapped to portray an android, starring opposite Noomi Rapace who had signed up before the project morphed from an "Alien" prequel to an original sci-fi tentpole.

At almost the same time, 20th Century Fox decides to give a new and high-profile release date for "Prometheus". Previously vacating March 9, 2012 slot, the forthcoming film is now slated for June 8, 2012 release.

This way, the movie swaps place with Disney's "John Carter of Mars". The action fantasy movie was previously scheduled for June 2012 release, but it was later moved up to March 9 of the same year after Disney pushed Tim Burton's 3-D stop-motion feature "Frankenweenie" back to October 5, 2012 from the old March slot.

Ridley Scott is now working together with Damon Lindelof to write the script. The plot is kept under wraps but Scott said the movie will have "alien DNA". He is additionally set to direct the film.

Michael Fassbender is one of the most sought actors lately after his performances in "Hunger", "Fish Tank" and "Inglourious Basterds". He scores a lead role of Magneto in "X-Men: First Class", stars as psychologist Carl Jung in David Cronenberg's "A Dangerous Method", and lands parts in "Jane Eyre" as well as Steven Soderbergh's "Haywire".

Michael Fassbender Is An Android In Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS

* January 27, 2011 2:27 am
* Matt Holmes

He’s been long desired for the project and now Sir. Ridley Scott has finally got his man – the German/Irish actor Michael Fassbender has tonight officially joined the cast of his science fiction film Prometheus, which incidentally was also today given a highly lucrative June 8th 2012 release date from it’s previous March 2012 opening.

Fassbender will play an android in the film in what we presume will be a character similar to Ian Holm’s Ash in the original Alien and there’s certainly something cold, detached and untrustworthy about Fassbender’s eyes and demeanor that excites for the role. The soon to be Magneto joins lead Noomi Rapace as the protagonist Elizabeth Shaw – with Charlize Theron still in talks for a secondary female part.

Ironically, Theron and Fassbender were due to star together in Universal’s fairytale actioner Snow White and the Huntsmen, where Theron was to play the Evil Queen and Fassbender, the co-titled Huntsman. Fassbender, who was second choice to Batman 3′s Bane Tom Hardy for that movie, dropped out a little while ago, probably around the same time Ridley Scott first called him about this movie.

We guess Theron will now need to decide which of the two films she herself will want to shoot this Spring.

Ian Holm As Android In Alien

Prometheus then was announced as an original sci-fi project from 20th Century Fox two weeks ago but one that’s still based on the same Alien prequel Damon Lindelof script, same basic idea as mapped out by Jon Spaihts and it’ll be a similar film to Ridley Scott’s 1979 film but it won’t have any connections at all to the franchise. Scott said two weeks ago;

“While ‘Alien’ [the original film] was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of ‘Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative,”

We are big fans of Fassbender at OWF, the actor really coming to our attention in Hunger and Inglourious Basterds, before starring in a couple of stinkers (Centurion, Jonah Hex). We expect much more from his 2011 slate though with his co-leading role in X-Men: First Class & A Dangerous Method and his appearance in Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire to come.

We've recently been nominated for Sky Movies Blog of the Year. Hit the like button below if you think we deserve to win.

Michael Fassbender Up For Prometheus
And the movie has a new release date...

27 January 2011 | Source: Heat Vision Blog

Michael Fassbender Up For Prometheus

It’s a busy day for news about Prometheus, the new film that grew from Ridley Scott’s original intent to craft a prequel to Alien. And the biggest half of the new announcements is also the most welcome: Michael Fassbender has snagged one of the lead roles.

Long rumoured as part of the film even back when everyone still thought it was going to be an Alien prequel or a pair of films, Fassbender is now officially part of Scott’s team, the second actor to enter negotiations following Noomi Rapace, who was announced earlier this month.

Details on what the film is actually going to be about are scarce, though the title would suggest mankind meddling in interstellar things about which it has no true understanding and coming off badly. Rapace is playing scientist Elizabeth Shaw, and Fassbender will be an android, possibly related to the Bishop series. Why might that be? Scott’s statement when Prometheus was first unveiled: “The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative.”

It’s just the latest big job for Fassbender, who showed off real chops in Hunger and Fish Tank and has gone on to the likes of Inglourious Basterds, Centurion and Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming Haywire. Plus he’s finishing up throwing metal things around and arguing with James McAvoy in the role of Magneto in X-Men: First Class. The only people likely to be unhappy about this casting situation are the producers of Snow White and the Huntsman, which he’d been considering.

Now, though, he has the Sir Ridders seal of approval and hopefully it’ll push him even further. In related Prometheus news, the movie itself is on the move, shifting release dates from its original March 9, 2012 slot to a summer berth on June 8, 2012.

Michael Fassbender Joins Noomi Rapace in Prometheus
Jan 26, 2011 - By Krystal Clark

michael fassbender 26 1 11 kc Michael Fassbender Joins Noomi Rapace in Prometheus

Ridley Scott is pulling out all the stops for the cast of his “not-so-Alien prequel” Prometheus. Earlier today we learned that the film’s release date had been pushed back to June 8, 2012, making it another one of the many blockbusters to expect that summer. Now THR, is reporting that a U.K. actor is set to play the male lead in Prometheus opposite Noomi Rapace and it’s Michael Fassbender.

Even though we have no idea what the script for Prometheus entials, we hear it will have some “Alien DNA.” Fassbender’s character is said to be an android, so if he’s a love interest for Rapace that relationship can’t really go anywhere — or can it? He was initially asked to join the film last year when it was still being shopped as the Alien prequel, but talks never solidified until now.

Fassbender is really making a name for himself in Hollywood. He has a headlining role in Fox’s X-Men First Class, which comes out this summer (June 3), and next year he’ll follow that up with Prometheus. That’s not a bad schedule to have. Fassbender and Rapace are a great combination and we can’t wait to see them together on the big screen!

What do you think of Fassbender joining Prometheus?
