Michael Fassbender Joins Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’

Posted on Wednesday, January 26th, 2011 by Peter Sciretta

Michael Fassbender has signed on to star opposite Noomi Rapace in Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus. The science fiction project set-up at 20th Century Fox, was originally developed as an Alien prequel. Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) will play Elizabeth Shaw, and Fassbender will be playing an android.

Heat Vision reports that Fassbender was originally offered the role last year when the project was still the Alien prequel. There is another big female role in the film, which is being circled by Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie. two other major male roles have to be cast, too.

Previously:

Much of the story is being kept under wraps, but Scott has said the movie will have the”Alien DNA”, whatever that means. The project has become something “more original,” an the Jon Spaihts draft has been reworked by Scott and Damon Lindelof. Scott says Prometheus has “a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place” and “the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative.” Damon Lindelof has called the project “daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects.”

The common usage of “Prometheus” is a character in Greek mythology, a Titan, “a champion of mankind, known for his wily intelligence, who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mortals” according to Wikipedia. That notion of taking from the more fortunate to help the less fortunate fits in perfectly with what the guys at ScriptFlags think Prometheus is in the new Scott film. Apparently, in one of Spaihts’s other scripts called Shadow 19, there’s a terraforming ship that’s called…you guessed it, Prometheus. Terraforming is the idea of physically making other planets habitable because of Earth’s decline which has become a regular theme in modern science fiction.

Ridley Scott is directing the movie, which will be released on June 8th, 2012.

Michael Fassbender In Talks For ‘Prometheus’
Published on January 26, 2011 by Nick Newman

Back when we thought Ridley Scott‘s upcoming Prometheus was actually a prequel to Alien, one of the stories we reported on it was that Michael Fassbender was in talks to star (well, that story was technically not true, but I don’t feel like getting into inside baseball). Now, Variety tells us that he is actually in talks to star.

Not much was given away in the report, other than the fact that he’s got some other projects in negotiations right now, such as Snow White and the Huntsman. That movie recently stole Charlize Theron away from Clint Eastwood‘s J. Edgar, and she’s also in talks to star in Prometheus — talk about Hollywood connections.

Not much else could really be said here, other than the fact that Fassbender is an incredible actor (if you haven’t seen Hunger, please do so as soon as you can), and the combination of him and Noomi Rapace would only add to the prestige this movie has to ride on. This is one of those times that I would like to see a “smaller” actor take on a big movie, and in this case I’d like it quite a bit.

Prometheus opens in theaters on its new date of June 9, 2012.

What do you think of Fassbender joining the cast of Prometheus?

Michael Fassbender to Play an Android in Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus'

January 26, 2011

Michael Fassbender

We've got a double-dose of exciting news regarding Ridley Scott's Prometheus today, so let's get right into it. Heat Vision reports that rising star and extremely talented actor Michael Fassbender has landed a role in Ridley's return to sci-fi, the former Alien prequel turned original sci-fi. They don't have any details on his character, but do say that he will play an android. The other news is that Fox has rescheduled the film from its March release to June 8th, 2012, taking a strong early summer spot that Disney's John Carter of Mars originally had before it moved up to March 2012. This seems like it will be an epic return to sci-fi for Ridley.

Fassbender has been on the rise since appearing in Hunger, Fish Tank and Inglourious Basterds. He plays Magneto in X-Men: First Class, stars in Cary Fukunaga's Jane Eyre, Steven Soderbergh's Haywire, David Cronenberg's The Dangerous Method as psychologist Carl Jung, and was also considering a role in Tarsem's Snow White and the Huntsman, but now with this role booked he's not joining that project. Fassbender has been in the running for a role in the Alien prequel for a while (we mentioned him late last year) but I'm still happy to see him on-board in its new iteration, which you can read more about here. And as an android, nonetheless! Looks like Ian Holm could get a run for his money? We will keep you updated on Prometheus!

Fassbender in talks for 'Prometheus'
Actor in negotiations to star opposite Rapace in sci-fier
By Rachel Abrams, Justin Kroll

Looking more and more like a summer tentpole, 20th Century Fox's 2012 pic "Prometheus" has moved from March 9 release date to June 8. Fox is negotiating with Michael Fassbender to star as David.

Pic, to be directed by Ridley Scott (who will also produce), will also star Noomi Rapace. Damon Lindelof is rewriting a script penned by Jon Spaihts from an original idea by Scott.

David Giler, Walter Hill and Tony Scott will produce.

Project was first rumored to be an "Aliens" prequel before Fox gave it the "Prometheus" title earlier this month.

"The keen fan will recognize strands of 'Alien's' DNA, so to speak," the helmer said previously in a statement. "But the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative."

Plot details are being kept under wraps.

In the last week, Fox has made the project one of its top priorities for the next year.

In addition to Fassbender and Rapace, studio is planning to cast one major lead, with Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron circling.

Fassbender has a clutch of pics slated for release this year, including Fox's "X-Men: First Class."

Fassbender has been considering several upcoming roles, including Universal's "Snow White and the Huntsman."

He's repped by CAA.

'Prometheus' Plot Rumors Surface with Further Talk of the 'Space Jockey'
Tiny pieces begin to come together

Sky.com has a source claiming they have some insider details on Ridley Scott's upcoming sci-fi feature Prometheus that alleges the film may have more than just the "strands of Alien's DNA" Scott claimed earlier as much as it may have an actual character of sorts. Sky's source said, "They've built the 'space jockey' cockpit at Pinewood [Studios] as seen in the original Alien film, so it definitely takes place in the same world as Alien."

The "space jockey" they are referring to can be seen in the above image as it originally appeared in Alien and it is no surprise he would be a part of the story as his character was the genesis for the whole idea of the Alien prequel that Prometheus became. When the film was described as an Alien prequel Scott told Empire, "It's set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney [Weaver's character Ellen Ripley]. It's fundamentally about going out to find out 'Who the hell was that Space Jockey?'"

When the story first hit the Internet I went back and listened to Ridley Scott's Alien commentary during the scene with the "Space Jockey" and he revealed they didn't have a specific story for him at the time, but Scott had his own ideas saying, "I think the 'space jockey' is somehow the pilot and he's part of a military operation – if that's the word you want to apply to his world – and therefore this is probably some kind of carrier, a weapon carrier, a biological or biomechanoid carrier of lethal eggs; inside of which are these small creatures that will actually, fundamentally integrate in a very aggressive way into any society or any place it's dropped."

From all of that comes Prometheus and if Sky's report has any truth to it, Scott along with screenwriters Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour) and Damon Lindelof ("Lost," Star Trek) have come up with a story that goes into deeper corners of unexplored space. The Sky report continues:

"Part of the film will be shot in Morocco. I've heard that some sort of archaeological dig where they discover alien DNA takes place there and that DNA gives them the coordinates for an alien world. I’ve also heard Morocco is being used for alien planet landscapes so I’m not sure if it's an archaeological dig on another planet," they revealed. [...]

"The main spaceship in the film will be piloted by an enormous head which I assume will be CGI. Yep, sounds weird but I assume some of the technology will be sort of biomechanical."

All of this news seems to weave itself together in some way or another, but the final product still remains unclear.

What is known for sure to this point is Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) will play a scientist named Elizabeth Shaw, Michael Fassbender will play an android and Charlize Theron appears to be the front-runner to play a character known only as Vickers. The film is expected to begin shooting later this year for a June 8, 2012 release.

More on (the Alien Prequel?) Prometheus

Okay. We officially have a headache. Is Prometheus an Alien prequel? Is it an entirely different beast altogether? Or is it both? There's certainly a lot of confusion surrounding the Ridley Scott film, and no one on the inside is talking. Although ...

More on (the Alien Prequel?) PrometheusAccording to Sky Movies, who credit an "exclusive source", the movie will feature an alien designed by H.R. Giger, and even the famed space jockey will be recreated.

"Part of the film will be shot in Morocco," says Sky Movies. "I've heard that some sort of archaeological dig where they discover alien DNA takes place there, and that DNA gives them the coordinates for an alien world. I've also heard Morocco is being used for alien planet landscapes so I'm not sure if it's an archaeological dig on another planet."

Legit? Ramblings? We don't really know, but hey it's a glimmer of hope, no?

Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender. Look for it in theatres on June 8th, 2012.

EXCLUSIVE: Prometheus Plot Reveal - Aliens ARE In It

It turns out that Ridley Scott's recent comments that Prometheus would be a departure from the Aliens series are somewhat misleading.

An exclusive source has told us that not only are HR Giger's classic aliens in it, but that they're integral to the plot.

Mere hours after the announcement that Michael Fassbender is locked in to play an android with rumoured links to Aliens' Bishop series, our insider sources have revealed that he's not the only one with strong links to the series' past.

Alien 27This is back too...."They’ve built the ‘space jockey’ cockpit at Pinewood as seen in the original Alien film, so it definitely takes place in the same world as Alien", they told us.

"Despite that press release that seemed to indicate there were no aliens in the movie, the familiar HR Giger-style aliens do appear. Big ones apparently."

And as for Scott's comments noting that "keen fans will recognise strands of Alien's DNA"?

It turns out there was the slightest hint of misdirection - apparently the actual DNA of the xenomorphs is integral to the plot - and will see the cast jet off to the alien homeworld itself.

"Part of the film will be shot in Morocco. I’ve heard that some sort of archaeological dig where they discover alien DNA takes place there and that DNA gives them the coordinates for an alien world. I’ve also heard Morocco is being used for alien planet landscapes so I’m not sure if it’s an archaeological dig on another planet," they revealed.

It gets weirder too, with Damon Lindelof's script set to crank up the sci-fi angle to maximum effect.

"The main spaceship in the film will be piloted by an enormous head which I assume will be CGI. Yep, sounds weird but I assume some of the technology will be sort of biomechanical."

Happy to see Aliens are still a part of the plot? Excited to see what they could do on the alien's homeworld itself? Let us know on our Facebook page and Twitter stream.

Prometheus To Take Place In The Alien Universe?
Baxter
Posted 1 hour 13 mins ago - By Joseph Baxter

Studio Issues To Stall Upcoming Alien Prequel?

Will Prometheus still feature Aliens? After being salvaged from the supposedly-canned Alien prequel project, Ridley Scott's Prometheus continues to baffle the Internet rumor mills regarding exactly what it will become. According to a report from Sky, their "exclusive sources" tell them that despite earlier reports, Prometheus will indeed take place in the same universe in which the iconic, vicious, acidic-sanguinary Xenomorph Aliens roam. While it was believed that Prometheus would emerge as a re-contextualized version of the original Alien prequel script penned by Lost mastermind Damon Lindelof, the report alleges that there will, in fact, be Aliens-a-plenty in the film. The film, which has its sights locked on Noomi Rapace as main character, Elizabeth Shaw, has recently confirmed rumors that Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class, 300) will join the cast to play a Bishop-like Android character. So, will we get a straight story about what this thing will be anytime in the near future?

According to Sky's sources:

"Despite that press release that seemed to indicate there were no aliens in the movie, the familiar HR Giger-style aliens do appear. Big ones apparently." Also: "They’ve built the ‘space jockey’ cockpit at Pinewood as seen in the original Alien film, so it definitely takes place in the same world as Alien."

In the initial announcement of the Alien prequel's metamorphosis into Prometheus, Ridley Scott made the comment that "keen fans" would recognize what he referred to as "strands of Alien’s DNA” in the film. The comment seemed designed to assure fans of the Alien films that it would maintain their spirit. However, if the news from Sky's sources turns out to be accurate, then Scott may have made literal comments that were misconstrued as figurative. Their report indicates that Alien DNA will play quite a role in the film.

"Part of the film will be shot in Morocco. I’ve heard that some sort of archaeological dig where they discover alien DNA takes place there and that DNA gives them the coordinates for an alien world. I’ve also heard Morocco is being used for alien planet landscapes so I’m not sure if it’s an archaeological dig on another planet."

This is indeed an odd situation. We were never really given a clear reason for the supposed demise of the Alien prequel project and it was generally assumed that the issues of money and artistic direction that surrounded the infamously contentious relationship between Scott and Fox Studio was the culprit. Now, it could very well be that the prequel project may have simply got a new coat of paint (in other words, just a title.)

However, what may put some doubts into the validity of this report, may be the comments made by Damon Lindelof upon the Prometheus announcement. It essentially complimented the originality of Scott's project, while decrying the array of "prequels, sequels, and reboots." While it may have been a declaration of how this "prequel" would manage to transcend all the tired gimmicks we've been seeing in similar brand revival attempts, it still sounded like it was in the context of complete liberation from the Alien franchise. Additionally, in Ridley Scott's "DNA" comment, he made reference to what he described as a "new, grand mythology and universe."

It is a possibility, therefore, that all of these details from the report could be accurate, but dated. So, for now, I'd more likely put this tidbit in the "grain of salt" file.

What do you think of the possibility of Prometheus still having direct connection to the Alien franchise? Is it a good thing? Or should it just cut all ties, already?

Could Ridley Scott's Prometheus steal the prequel machine's thunder?

Hollywood has been stuck on reboots since The Dark Knight, but Scott's Alien-related 'new universe' could usher in an age of risks

Spaced out ... Ridley Scott's original Alien film, with which Prometheus will share only 'DNA'. Relatively different ... Ridley Scott's original Alien film, with which Prometheus will share only 'DNA'. Photograph: Allstar/Cinetext/20th Century Fox

This week's news that Michael Fassbender is to join Ridley Scott's Prometheus adds to the sense that there's a certain air of quality to the project that wasn't so apparent back when it was merely an Alien prequel. Since being virtually strongarmed by 20th Century Fox into stepping up from producer to director, Scott seems to have been treating the prospect of his first science fiction film in more than 30 years with some degree of gravity. As well as tapping up The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo's Noomi Rapace to play one of the female leads, he's brought Lost's Damon Lindelof in to work on the script and apparently spent a great deal of time working to reroute the screenplay via Lindelof and Jon Spaihts.

Somewhere along the way the movie morphed into Prometheus, based according to Scott on "a new, grand mythology and universe", but with "Alien's DNA". This rather suggests that all bets are off: the new film could take place after the events of the first Alien series just as easily as before it. Or the link could be even less tangible.

There are hints, however, that the project will still count as a reboot of sorts, not least in that intriguing title. Prometheus was the Greek god who gave mankind fire and otherwise helped the fledgling human race move towards a civilised state. Early reports about Scott's film suggested it would reveal the origins of the "space jockey" whose fossilised remains are passed by the crew of the Nostromo as they investigate the doomed planetoid in Alien. Were these extraterrestrials using the xenormorphs to terraform the planet by killing off all indigenous lifeforms in advance of colonisation? Was their creation of the monstrous creatures the Promethean moment of madness which unleashed the most destructive lifeform ever seen in the universe?

It sounds like a lot of speculation, but a recent Script Flags piece uncovered the fact that a previous unfilmed Spaihts screenplay going by the name of Shadow19 featured a terraforming ship named Prometheus. Coincidence? I suspect not. The new film might just be a fusion of that storyline with a smattering of detail from the Alien universe.

Fassbender will play an android in Prometheus, so already we have a connection to the original films. Ash in Alien (played by Ian Holm) and Bishop from James Cameron's Aliens (Lance Henriksen) were both pivotal robotic figures in their respective movies. Then you have the focus on female protagonists, with Rapace clearly set for a prominent turn amid reports that Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron are both in talks to play Vickers.

Then again, one never knows quite what to expect with Scott, who has a habit of letting titbits of detail about his films drift into the public arena before his screenplay has been finalised. Last year's Robin Hood was originally supposed to be titled Nottingham, and would have been about a decent Sheriff of Nottingham who battles an evil Hood. A while later and the two characters were supposed to be the same man. In the end, the movie ended up being a rather orthodox origins tale with very little of the detail which the director himself had revealed in early interviews. So Prometheus could easily end up jettisoning all that space jockey stuff (which Scott revealed to MTV in April last year) by the time it hits the big screen.

What is intriguing about the movie, however it turns out, is the fact that bloggers and fans seem to be more excited about the prospect of an original film with links to an older, popular franchise than they might have been about a straight-up prequel. The constant slew of sequels and "origins" movies in recent years is obviously indicative of Hollywood's determination to guarantee interest in a project before handing over the greenbacks. Might Prometheus, if it proves successful, offer an exciting new third way for genre films to get financed?

Remember that after The Dark Knight's success (and to a lesser extent the financially successful but critically reviled second Star Wars trilogy) we suddenly saw a number of prequel and reboot movies getting the green light. If Scott does pull this one off, I imagine we'll see a whole host of new films being announced in 2013 and 2014 that are not quite prequels to older franchises, but that ... y'know ... work with strands of their "DNA". Such an outcome would surely be a move in the right direction, wouldn't you say?

Michael Fassbender To Star In 'Prometheus'
Share

By Daniel Hubschman , Hollywood.com Staff | Thursday, January 27, 2011

Michael FassbenderI wouldn't mind being Michael Fassbender. Not only is he a handsome devil, but his future is looking brighter everyday. He's already worked with a visual genius on Zack Snyder's 300 and an evil genius on Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds; that's something to be envious about. And even though his 2010 releases were significantly less stellar (Jonah Hex and Centurion - ouch), 2011 and beyond will be spectacular. This year, he appears in kick-ass flicks like Haywire and X-Men: First Class in addition to art-house fare like Jane Eyre and A Dangerous Method, but he's just booked a huge gig that will make 2012 standout for him.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Fassbender will star in Ridley Scott's new science fiction opus Prometheus, which is set up at 20th Century Fox. You may remember this project as the untitled Alien prequel that put many fanboy's in a frenzy. After Damon Lindelof (Star Trek, LOST) got involved as screenwriter, however, the film took an original turn and was spun-off into a fresh idea for a brand new movie.

Fassbender flirted with the idea of joining the monster-sized production when it was still an official Alien prequel, but now he's locked. He'll star opposite Noomi Rapace, who took Hollywood by storm with her role as Lisbeth Salander in the original, foreign Millennium Trilogy (which Sony is currently remaking with Oscar nominee David Fincher). There are other male and female roles to cast, so I'm very interested to see who else signs up for this potentially amazing project. Scott hasn't done sci-fi since 1982's triumphant Blade Runner; his return to a genre he helped redefine is alone reason enough to put Prometheus on my "most anticipated of 2012" list.

Prometheus is set for a June 8th, 2010 release.

Fassbender to join Rapace in Scott's Prometheus

Michael Fassbender

Another update on Prometheus, Ridley Scott's next film, which is to be set in the universe of the Alien movies. Michael Fassbender is in negotiations for a role as an android crew member. According to THR, it's all but a done deal.

What's particularly interesting about this – apart from the excellent news that sole confirmed cast member Noomi Rapace is to be joined by another sterling actor – is that it allows us to trace an internet rumour that began back in December. At the time, we reported that Fassbender was Scott's choice for the role but that negotiations had stalled over his fee. Then Fox's Chris Petrikin denied that Fassbender had been offered a role altogether. Funny that of all the actors in the world, Fassbender is again attached to the same role. If we didn't know better, we'd say that sometimes studio spokesmen don't always tell us the complete truth and are perhaps somewhat more concerned with plugging leaks before deals are done.

Anyway, according to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog, Fassbender has booked the gig. Prometheus has apparently switched release dates from March 2012 to the much higher-profile June 8th, good news for those of us hoping for something pretty spectacular.

Here's a recap on the information on the roles that was leaked way back in December. Two characters (and the actors originally linked to the roles) have been confirmed. Are the others accurate?

Elizabeth Shaw – this is to be the film's protagonist, a young woman roughly 25-30 years old. Noomi Rapace is to play Shaw. She is already in training for the role and told EW: "I want to turn my body into something like a cat or a lion. They can be still and relaxed, and then explode."

Vickers – a key supporting character, Vickers (we presume this is her surname) is a tough, 40-something crew member who's already been compared to Aliens' Marine Vasquez. In December, Michelle Yeaoh's name was linked to the role. Since then, Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie's names have been mentioned. But, realistically, would either of them play second fiddle to the girl with the dragon tattoo?

David – David is an android crew member. He will be some sort of forebear of the Bishop 341-B character, played by Lance Henriksen in Aliens and Alien3. As the character has been compared to Bishop and not the traitorous Ash, played by Ian Holm, we are presuming that the other crew members will be aware of his origins. This is the role that Fassbender has signed up for.

Engineer One – Rumours from way-back-when also said that the ship's first engineer is to be a six-foot-five alien. It was thought that the character would be created in CGI and mapped over an actor's performance, much like Andy Serkis' Gollum. Will we still see an alien (not Xenomorph) crew member? We hope so, as long as it's a long way from a duff character like Jar-Jar Binks.

The businessman – The crew has some kind of tag-along, in the form of a business traveller. We are guessing that this individual will have something to do with the nascent Weyland-Yutani Corp. It could even be one of the two founders and is likely to be played by an older actor. There was a suggestion that Lance Henriksen had been approached at one stage, since in Alien vs Predator, Henriksen played Weyland CEO Charles Bishop Weyland, but it's been all quiet on the casting front for this role – if the character will even be involved.

Fingers crossed for more quality acting talent signing up. Damon Lindelof is apparently completing the script now, after he and Scott decided to take an original screenplay by Jon Spaihts in a new direction. I think it's shaping up to be pretty exciting. What say you?

Fassbender Lands High Profile Role In Prometheus… But Is It Actually A New Alien Movie Afterall?
January 27th, 2011 by Brendon Connelly

Josh Hylton writes for Bleeding Cool:

News about Ridley Scott’s two Alien prequels have been floating around for some time. First it was one standalone prequel, then it was announced he was planning two films, then one again, and now it appears that one of those prequels has metamorphosed into a "seemingly" separate science fiction project called Prometheus (more on that in a second). Well, some casting news has just trickled in for it and if your interest in these movies hasn’t already dissipated, read on.

The Hollywood Reporter has just confirmed that Michael Fassbender, best known for his roles in 300 and Inglourious Basterds, will be starring opposite Noomi Rapace, otherwise known as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, in Scott’s ever changing sci-fi film. This news officially takes Fassbender out of the running for a key role in Universal’s upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman, presumably due to conflicting shooting schedules.

Of interest, however, is that Prometheus may not be a total departure from the Alien series, as Sky Movies is reporting that the classic alien creatures actually play a major role in the film’s plot. A source close to them even went so far as to say that the film "definitely takes place in the same world as Alien." How the two mix into each other remains to be seen.

Fassbender in Prometheus?

Ridley Scott's Alien prequel transmorphed a few weeks ago into Prometheus. Noomi Rapace, the films lead remained, and... well, I'm not actually sure other then that. There have been rumors that Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron want to play the 2nd lead. Now comes word that Centurion star Michael Fassbender is in talks to play an android. Fassbender was German film expert in Inglorious Basterds and will play Magneto in X-Men: First Class. After watching him in b-movie epic Centurion he's become one of my favorite newish actors. So for me the only problem with his casting in Prometheus is that he's an android meaning he'll probably be a bit more restrained then he would be if he were human.

Michael Fassbender Getting All Our Best Nerd Roles: He's in 'Prometheus' Now

Fox must have sorted out the issue of Michael Fassbender wanting too much scratch to be in Ridley Scott's Alien prequel, because the actor is now reportedly signed on to star opposite Noomi Rapace in the movie, titled Prometheus now that Ridley Scott decided it's not officially an Alien prequel anymore. Fassbender, who we'll soon see wearing a plastic cap and straps in X-Men: First Class, will play an android in the film--a character described as an early-model Lance Henriksen-bot back when this was still a proper prequel. Now that the plot is free from the constraints of prequel-dom, perhaps he'll be free of any comparisons to future models--a real independent android. An android can always dream, right? Or can they? I don't remember Philip K. Dick's ruling on that.

’300′ & ‘X-Men: First Class’ Star Michael Fassbender Joins Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’

The Movie God Posted by The Movie God | January 27th, 2011 at 6:13 pm

A new actor has been added to the cast of director Ridley Scott‘s upcoming return to science fiction, Prometheus.

The movie, as you’ll recall, was much-anticipated for a long while as being a prequel to Scott’s 1979 horror classic, Alien. It was only when the above title was announced that we discovered that the movie had grown out of its prequel status, and had evolved into a unique standalone film.

Joining the cast of Prometheus is Michael Fassbender, who’s quickly rising as top young star. Fassbender first caught a lot of eyes as the cocky and humorous member of Leonidas’s Spartans in 300, and has gone on to give memorable performances in Inglourious Basterds and Centurion. He’s currently working on Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, where he’s playing the younger Magneto.

The interesting thing about this casting is that it’s being reported that Fassbender will in fact be playing an android in the movie. This of course will immediately latch itself to the fact that androids played a crucial role in the Alien franchise mythos, leading one to wonder if we still have a prequel fused deep within Prometheus.

Fassbender joins Noomi Rapace, the star of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and its sequels, who was already cast in the lead female role. The script is written by Lost writer/producer Damon Lindelof.

Michael Fassbender To Star Opposite Noomi Repace In PROMETHEUS

Michael Fassbender, of Inglourious Basterds and 300 fame, has just been tapped to star opposite Noomi Repace (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) in Ridley Scott’s PROMETHUS. Fassbender will play an Android in the film, which will be directed by Scott and has been slated for a high-profile summer release date of June 8, 2012. The film was to originally supposed to be an Alien prequel slated for a release date of March 2012. Although details of the film remain secret, there are rumors from Scott that it will involve “alien DNA.”

In addition to Fox’s X-Men: First Class, Fassbender has several other films in the works, including Jane Eyre and A Dangerous Method. He was offered the role of Prometheus last year, and remained in talks with the project throughout the summer and fall. The actor was also in involved in talks to star in Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, a role that ultimately ended up going to his Dangerous Method co-star Viggo Mortensen once he officially booked his role in Prometheus.

Michael Fassbender has been one of my favorite actors since 300, and I’m really excited for all the film opportunities he’s been getting. Prometheus should be a really good film! Are you looking forward to it?

Space Jockey and Xenomorphs will be in Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS
AuthorVenkman

As you know, Ridley Scott's Alien prequel film project ended up turning into an original idea. Fox announced in a previous report that Scott's new sci-fi film would be called Prometheus, and that it would steer away from the original Alien film mythology. It looks like this may not be the case, it's recently been revealed that the Alien mythology will actually play a big role in the film, and it includes the Space Jocky and Xenomorphs.

The news comes from Sky.com who released the following rumored plot points for the upcoming film:

"They’ve built the ‘space jockey’ cockpit at Pinewood as seen in the original Alien film, so it definitely takes place in the same world as Alien", they told us.

"The main spaceship in the film will be piloted by an enormous head which I assume will be CGI. Yep, sounds weird but I assume some of the technology will be sort of biomechanical."

Sounds good to me! I'm happy to here that they may end up sticking to the mythology... if this is true. We have yet to receive confirmation, but once we have it we'll let you know!

Previously reported:

Noomi Rapace will play Elizabeth Shaw in the film, and yesterday it was announced that Michael Fassbender has joined the production, and will be taking on an android role. In addition, it has been reported that Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron are both circling the other big female role of "Vickers".

Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour) wrote the first draft of the script from Ridley’s idea. Since then, Damon Lindelof (Lost, Star Trek) and Scott have worked together on the current version which has expanded the story into new directions. Lindelof and Scott were only asked to use the 'Alien DNA' as the basis for the script. As you would expect the details are being closely guarded. Scott did reveal the outlines of the film and its genesis as follows:

“While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn't be more pleased to have found the singular tale I'd been searching for, and finally return to this genre that's so close to my heart.”

Here is what Lindelof had to say:

"In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots, I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley's vision was for this movie. It's daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects. When I sat in a movie theater as a kid, feet raised off the floor for fear that something might grab my ankles, I never dreamed in my wildest imagination I would one day get to collaborate with the man responsible for it. Working alongside him has been nothing short of a dream come true."

PROMETHEUS

Young Magneto Michael Fassbender is set to star in the "Alien" quasi-prequel, according to Heat Vision. The actor will reportedly play an android. "He was offered the 'Prometheus' role last year (when it was still the 'Alien' prequel), with talks on and off throughout the fall," they write. I guess it's still standard operating procedure to have a synthetic on board. Just make sure Fassbender isn't the Hyperdyne Systems model 120 A/2. Yes, I did have to look that up. Meanwhile, Blastr has the amazing story of the Nostromo model, how it sat in a driveway in Burbank for twenty years, and how a group of dedicated special effects artists restored it.

Fassbender on board for "Prometheus"

Michael Fassbender has been really busy lately! After his breakout with QT's "Inglourious Basterds" he starred in "Centurion", then... "Jonah Hex" and immediately afterwards took the role of Magneto for the upcoming "X-men:First Class". Now he is going to star along Noomi Rapace in Ridley Scott's ex-alien prequel "Prometheus". Curious how this one turns out since i am a huge fan of both Rapace and Fassbender.

Michael Fassbender joins Ridley Scott's Prometheus
Michael Fassbender in Hunger

Story by Jack Foley

MICHAEL Fassbender has joined the cast of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus alongside Noomi Rapace.

The film is otherwise known as the new incarnation of Fox’s Alien prequel, which still contains a lot of that movie’s DNA.

Such is the distributor’s confidence in the story, however, that it has now also moved from a March 2012 opening slot in the US to a more high-profile summer release of June 8, 2012.

Much of the storyline remains shrouded in secrecy, but Scott maintains that it will contain elements of Alien, just using a much broader scope. Fassbender is playing an android.

Fassbender is currently one of the UK’s most in-demand actors, having shot to prominence with back-to-back turns in Inglourious Basterds and Hunger.

He will also shortly be seen as Magneto in Fox’s X-Men: First Class. See photos

He was offered the Prometheus role last year but has finally been lured onto the project by a director who is keen to work with him.

Michael Fassbender Joins Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus'

Ireland's own Michael Fassbender has just been confirmed as the male lead and will star opposite Noomi Rapace in Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus,' the sci-fi project that was once an Alien prequel incarnation, but is now an original movie that Scott has described as having traces of 'Alien' DNA.

The Kerry man is to play an android, and has been in talks for the role since the project was green lit. Further casting announcements are expected to be announced soon with a large significant role to be played by an actress expected to be either Charlize Theron or Angelina Jolie still to be announced, as well as further male cast additions.

Michael Fassbender Joins Ridley Scott's "Prometheus"
One of my favorite up and coming actors is without a doubt Michael Fassbender. He hasn't landed a lead role yet except for Centurion, every role he is in he does the best he can do with that role. Even when it's small roles like in 300 or Inglourious Basterds, he really knows how to become the character and bring a lot of charm to it. And hell he's even starring in X-Men: First Class, which could definitely get his name bigger in Hollywood.

Now we all know that a few weeks back, Ridley Scott announced that he would morph his Alien prequel into a movie called Prometheus, a "Alien DNA" movie, whatever the hell that is. I'm of course a big fan of Ridley Scott even though his last movie "Robin Hood" really let me down, I'm hoping this will be a huge comeback from that movie. Plus it's starring Noomi Rapace, and who doesn't love that? And now joining the cast is Michael Fassbender, who, according to Heat Vision, "was offered the role back when the project was still the Alien Prequel" and "will play an Android."

The director is still searching for a second female lead, which is now revolving around choices such as Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron (who would be my personal pick). The film is set for a June 2012 release date, and I'm looking very much forward to it. I'm hoping it will be quite an epic Sci-Fi film and will be on par with many of Ridley Scott's other films. And if that doesn't working out...well, he can just release the director's cut the next year and all will be fine.

Michael Fassbender Gets Fired Up For PROMETHEUS
By Devin Faraci | January 26, 2011

It’s been a good couple of years for Michael Fassbender. A truly gifted actor (see Hunger if you don’t believe me), he’s become something of a hot commodity with casting directors. He’s had some hits – Centurion, Inglourious Basterds – and some misses – Jonah Hex (where he was the best thing in the film). He also has some intriguing films coming; he’s shooting X-Men: First Class right now, where he plays a young Magneto, and he has Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method, where he plays Jung, in the can.

And now he’s signed on to star in one of the biggest movies of 2012, Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. The film, which began as a prequel to Alien but morphed into something new, shoots this year for a summer 2012 release (moved back from March). Fassbender will be starring opposite Noomi Rapace, star of the original The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Fassbender will be playing an android; he was first offered the part last year when it was still an Alien film.

I’m very much looking forward to this movie; hopefully Prometheus is a great original piece of scifi and a return to form for Ridley Scott, a director whose recent output has been uneven. And hopefully it’s the next step in Fassbender’s exploding career!

Prometheus

Ridley Scott’s not an Alien Prequel but still sorta an Alien Prequel Prometheus is said to have Michael Fassbender in negotiations to play opposite Noomi Rapace in the film, which will now be released on June 8, 2012. Fassbender is about to become a household name in this summer’s X-Men: First Class as Magneto. Totally neato. Get it?
