Michael Fassbender Being Eyed for Robocop Remake

By Uncle Creepy
September 24th, 2011

Michael Fassbender Being Eyed for Robocop RemakeJust a couple of days ago we brought you a story about José Padilha's Robocop remake and the direction in which he wants to take it. On tap for you today we have who he wants to take it with!

According to Bleeding Cool Padilha confirms that he plans on shooting in spring of 2012, with dreams of landing Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class, Prometheus) as the new Officer Alex J. Murphy.

Let's face it; whoever takes the role will be covered in lots of make-up and armor, but a good actor is needed to bring all that to life. Fassbender, like Peter Weller before him (we'll just forget about Robocop 3, okay?), brings a lot to the table. Tell us what you think of this choice below or who YOU would recommend for the part.

Look for more on this one soon.

Director Jose Padilha likes Michael Fassbender for Robocop remake

In March of 2011, Brazilian writer and director Jose Padilha signed on to direct the remake of the 1987 film Robocop, but there hasn't been much news since then. Padilha even said there was no deadline for the script he's writing for the film and says it will shoot when it is "good enough." But that doesn't mean he's not already thinking of leads and Michael Fassbender seems to be at the top of his list.

A new draft of the film was turned in by Padilha and his co-writer Joshua Zetumer just this week so that was why he threw out the name of the X-Men: First Class star.

“I can’t say anything yet. It’s too early. But there are some actors I am considering. I like [Michael] Fassbender a lot. I’m going to meet him—it’s a possibility. There are great actors who could play RoboCop.”

There has been no actual casting done yet for the remake, but Fassbender certainly is an interesting choice and one that wouldn't be bad either. For those that have never seen the original film, a synopsis and trailer link are below.

Check out the trailer for the original Robocop from 1987

Official synopsis:

Set in Detroit sometime in the near future, the film is about a policeman killed in the line of duty whom the department decides to resurrect as a half-human, half-robot supercop. The RoboCop is indestructible, and within a matter of weeks he has removed crime from the streets of Detroit. However, his human side is tortured by his past, and he wants revenge on the thugs who killed him.

Those in the New Orleans area will be able to order their tickets here for the film and check it out at the Chalmette Movies, the Palace at Elmwood, and the Palace at the Clearview Mall once an official release date for Robocop to protect and serve is announced.

ROBOCOP Reboot Director Wants Michael Fassbender for Title Role
By Pietro Filipponi
Published: September 24, 2011 - 8:50am

Though it was recently rumored MGM was scouting several popular actors for the lead role of the Detroit police officer who was resurrected as a cybernetic enforcer of the law, Robocop director José Padilha has another name in mind.

In a dystopic & crime ridden Detroit, a terminally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg with submerged memories haunting him. His directives are clear: serve the public trust, protect the innocent and uphold the law. He is Robocop.

Robocop and his human counterpart Officer Alex J. Murphy, portrayed in the 1987 film by Peter Weller, will be brought back to the silver screen with director José Padilha, best known for his Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad) action film series. Josh Zetumer (Quantum of Solace, Untitled 4th Entry to the Bourne franchise) has written the script, and many popular actors including Chris Pine, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves have been unofficially linked to the project.

During a recent interview, Padilha shared his vision of the film and how it would differ from the cult classic 80's version:

"I will not repeat what [Paul] Verhoeven has done so clearly and strongly. Instead I try to make a film that will address topics that Verhoeven untreated. If you are a man changes into a robot, how do you do that? What is the difference between humans and robots developed? What is free will? What does it mean to lose your free will? Those are the issues that I think."

The director went on to say that he would like to see Prometheus and X-Men: First Class star Michael Fassbender in the film's title role, though there is no word whether the studio will officially pursue him.
