EXCLUSIVE: See Shortlist for Lead in Universal's 'Snow White'

There's big movement on Snow White and the Huntsman, Universal's take on the suddenly hot fairy tale, which is the subject of several competing movie projects.

The studio, clearly angling to beat Relativity's version, is in talks with Charlize Theron to play the evil queen and is having conversations with Michael Fassbender's reps to take on the titular huntsman.

But who will nab the starring role of Snow White?

The studio initially thought of going with name actresses in that age bracket, making entreaties toward Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning and Saoirse Ronan, but is nowleaning toward going with a relative unknown and is holding screen tests in the next few days to find its leading lady. The stakes are high because, similar to Disney's recent Alice in Wonderland adaptation, there will be stars in key roles, but the main pillar is going to be whoever ends up as the orphaned girl on the run.

Sources caution that depending on how the tests go, the studio can still reverse course and continue reaching out a bigger name. But for now, the actresses who have made Universal's shortlist are:

-- Riley Keough, the granddaughter of Elvis Presley and daughter of
Lisa-Marie Presley. She made her film debut playing Marie Currie in The
Runaways and recently wrapped a vampire flick with Kylie Minogue titled Jack
& Diane.

-- Felicity Jones, an English actress currently seen as Miranda in Julie
Taymor's The Tempest. She also played Margot Frank in BBC's 2009 miniseries
The Diary of Anne Frank.

-- Bella Heathcoat, whose major credit is the Australian soap opera
Neighbours.

-- Alicia Vikander, a Swedish actress with mostly TV work under her hood.

[Pictured clockwise from top left: Keough, Jones, Heathcoat and Vikander.]

Apart from Keough, who is tethered to WME, none of the girls is known to
have American representation. So get to it, agents and managers!

Dueling Snow White Films Target Charlize Theron And Julia Roberts As Mean Queens
By MIKE FLEMING | Monday December 13, 2010 @ 7:44pm
Mike Fleming

EXCLUSIVE: An intriguing tale of rival Snow White is unfolding between Universal Pictures and Relativity Media. I'm told that Charlize Theron is hot and heavy in negotiations to play the Evil Queen in Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman (with Michael Fassbender the front-runner to play the woodsman). For its rival project The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, Relativity Media is courting Julia Roberts to play the Evil Queen. That film will be directed by Tarsem from a script by Melisa Wallack.

Universal is negotiating with Theron at the same time that she is reading the script for a key role in J. Edgar, the Clint Eastwood-directed film that will star Leonardo DiCaprio as FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover. The studio is moving quickly after paying $1.5 million against $3 million for the Evan Daughtery spec script that will be directed by Rupert Sanders.

The projects are very different, and both films are on the fastest possible track. It will be interesting to see if both fairy tales have happy endings.

Charlize Theron & Julia Roberts Both Might Poison SNOW WHITE

* December 14, 2010 2:56 am

I didn’t happen to like Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland but there’s a fair few of you who did. After all, you don’t get to $1 billion box office receipts without making a few friends along the way but I’d like to hope that better things are on the way from the countless sheep-mentality rip-offs that are being greenlit now to capitialise on Disney’s mega success story of this year.

Right now… Universal are gearing up to cast Snow White and The Huntsmen – their live-action revisionist adventure film based on the classic fairytale which Charlize Theron is now officially in talks to play the heartless Evil Queen and Michael Fassbender (and not his Brit rival Tom Hardy… seriously, those guys must spot each other day at casting offices) being chased for the Huntsmen role.

That one is being worked on by commercials director Rupert Sanders for filming to begin early 2011 for a release Christmas 2012, which probably means Theron will have to choose between a high-profile, high-camp Evil Queen in a Snow White movie OR a supporting gig in a Clint Eastwood political biopic. I know which I’d rather see her in but I also know which one is likely to be more appealing.

The project…

…takes a revisionist buddy movie spin on the tale, seeing the titular huntsman being hired by the evil queen to track down her runaway stepdaughter, the fairest in all the land. When he realizes that the queen intends to kill Snow White, he helps her escape, and the pair go on the run.

At the very same time, Relativity Media are courting Julia Roberts for the very same villainous role in a rival studio project, the much darker sounding The Brothers Grimm: Snow White from the visually spectacular helmer Tarsem Singh and producer Brett Ratner. That one might actually be interesting. It supposedly begins with Snow White’s step-mother killing her father and it pulls no punches in it’s R-Rated, ‘edgy’ horror. Though with Julia Roberts being courted and the title now rumoured to just be Snow White (again… taking the Alice in Wonderland route), things have probably changed since then.

I’d like to think that both productions won’t just be Alice in Wonderland’s with different characters but I’d also like to think that sweet old lady who offers me an apple isn’t trying to poison me.

Julia Roberts And Charlize Theron Each Wants To Play The Evil Queen In 2 Separate Competing SNOW WHITE Projects
Share Posted by Rama On December - 13 - 2010

As you know, there are 2 competing SNOW WHITE projects. And Deadline reported that 2 Oscar winning ladies are circling the evil queen roles..
Julia Roberts wants to play the evil queen in Relativity’s THE BROTHERS GRIMM: SNOW WHITE to be directed by Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fallen, THE IMMORTALS)
Written by Melissa Wallack, production is expected to start in March. Brett Ratner will produce the project along with Bernie Goldmann
The story “begins with the evil stepmother kills Snow White’s father and destroying the kingdom. Our heroine then bands together with a gang of seven quarrelsome dwarves to reclaim what is rightly hers”

You’ve heard about this project back in June, when Ratner described it like this..

“This is not your grandfather’s Snow White,”
“Melisa went back to the 500 year old folk tale and put in some of the things that were missing from Walt Disney’s film. His dwarves were miners, and here they are robbers. There is also a dragon that was in the original folk tale. Walt made one of the great movies of all time, but ours is edgy and there is more comedy. The original, made for its time, was soft compared to what we’re going to do.”

On the other corner of the ring is Charlize Theron is currently in talks to play The Evil Queen in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, the new take from scribe Evan Daugherty (HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, SHRAPNEL), directorial feature of Rupert Sanders and producer Joe Roth.
Universal Pictures picked up the project..here’s basically the plot..
It’s about the huntsman who’s ordered to take Snow White into the woods and kill her but he chooses to let her go. They both get chained together and they both escape.
Now, they don’t fall in love, make no mistake, the huntsman is not Snow White’s love interest in this story, there’s still going to be a prince for that but the huntsman becomes her mentor, teaching her how to fight and survive.

The character The huntsman would have more depth and pervasive sadness that makes his life feel quite real because in the script, the huntsman is haunted by a white wolf that killed his wife. So this isn’t just a fun blockbuster movie, whoever gets this role wold have to have great acting chops. He’ll be chained to Snow White as the duo make their escape from a pair of bounty hunters and then he teaches Snow White how to fight against her evil step-mother Ravenna.

Names like Tom Hardy and Johnny Depp were previously rumored to play the role of the huntsman but Hardy obviously is going to be busy with THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and Depp will be busy with a gazillion other projects including DARK SHADOWS and THE LONE RANGER. And so word has it the latest front runner name to take on this role is Michael Fassbender. No confirmation yet at this point.

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN opens December 21st, 2012

Felicity Jones Testing For Snow White & The Huntsman
Deadline reported today that Charlize Theron is still pursuing the role of the evil Queen in Rupert Sanders' Snow White & The Huntsman. They also mention Michael Fassbender is now up for the role of the Huntsman which had been rumored for Johnny Depp and Tom Hardy.

HeatVision adds to the story by releasing Universal's shortlist of actresses they'll be testing for the lead role of Snow White. The group includes mostly unknowns like Riley Keough, Bella Heathcoat and Alicia Vikander. Felicity Jones is best known actress on the list who has starred in The Tempest and Cemetery Junction. Jones is my favorite of the bunch and this could be her breakout performance.

This is director Rupert Sanders' debut film and is mostly known for his commercial work. Which includes the impressive live-action trailer for Halo ODST. He also made a short film entitled Black Hole which I assume is based on the comic book by Charles Burns.

SNOW WHITE Casting: Julia Roberts, Michael Fassbender, and Shortlist to Play Snow White
by Ramses Flores Posted:December 13th, 2010 at 7:38 pm

Two competing Snow White re-imaginings — Relativity Media’s The Brothers Grimm: Snow White and Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman — have sparked casting rumors for a few months now. Back in October, Tom Hardy (Inception) was rumored to play Eric the Huntsman in Snow White and the Huntsman with Charlize Theron set to star as the Snow White’s evil stepmother. Meanwhile, Relativity was circling Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, and Anne Hathaway for The Brothers Grimm: Snow White.

New casting rumors have surfaced for both films tonight. One links Julia Roberts to The Brothers Grimm. The other links Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) to Huntsman and reveals Universal’s shortlist to play Snow White: Riley Keough (The Runaways), Felicity Jones (The Tempest), Bella Heathcoat (Neighbours), and Alicia Vikander (Beloved). Details after the jump.

Deadline is reporting that Julia Roberts is being courted to play the Evil Queen in The Brothers Grimm: Snow White. The report is brief, and there is no reference to just how much she returns the interest.

Meanwhile, Heat Vision reports that Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) is the front-runner to play the woodsman in Snow White and the Hunstsman. Universal is continuing talks with Theron to star in the film, and considering their options for the lead role. The studio first leaned toward a name actress, like Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning or Saoirse Ronan. But now the unknowns — Keough, Jones, Heathcoat, and Vikander — are gaining favor. Screen tests will be held over the next few days.

Here is a recap of the three Snow White films in development:

Snow White and the Seven

* housed at Disney
* the dwarves are repurposed as “Shaolin fighting monks”
* appears to be the furthest along the pipeline

Snow White and the Huntsman

* housed at Universal
* Joe Roth will produce; Rupert Sanders is attached to direct
* Evan Daugherty’s screenplay gives the Huntsman an expanded role where he becomes chained to Snow White for part of the story and acts as a mentor figure, teaching the teen girl how to fight and survive

The Brothers Grimm: Snow White

* housed at Relativity Media
* Brett Ratner will produce the Melisa Wallack script; Tarsem Singh has been offered the director’s chair
* intended to be in 3D
We haven’t heard much about Snow White and the Seven, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it got put on hold after news of The Brothers Grimm: Snow White and Snow White and the Huntsman being so close to starting production got out. What will be interesting now to see is if one of these two films backs down after the other one beats it to a starting date, or if production on both films will actually go through since they both seem ready to start filming soon.

This news follows the latest trend of similar films in Hollywood competing with each other for the earlier release date. Earlier this year, we reported on the news that Doug Liman (Mr. and Ms. Smith) planned adaptation of The Three Musketeers was put on indefinite hold after Paul W.S. Anderson’s competing adaptation started production. As of right now, Disney and David Fincher are working on a adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, though Fox also has an adaptation of the classic Jules Verne novel in the works with Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) attached to direct. Then, we also have various Wizard of Oz projects in the works at different studios, led by Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful; the film is set to start filming this summer.

I will say that I’m personally rooting for and I’m more excited about The Brothers Grimm: Snow White purely because of Tarsem’s involvement. The extremely visual director taking on the classic fairy-tale just sounds like a perfect fit to me.

http://www.obsessedwithfilm.com/movie-news/judi-dench-joins-eastwoods-j-edgar.php

Australian actor Damon Herriman (from the show ‘Justified’) is Bruno Hauptmann, the man who kidnapped and killed the Linderbergh baby and Charlize Theron has been in talks for the part of Helen Gandy, Edgar’s loyal secretary. Now we can add Judi Dench to the cast, with Eastwood hinting that he is winning the battle for Theron’s signature…

“We think she will be in the film [with a smile.] And Judi Dench is definitely in the film and there we are.”

Eastwood is trying to convince Theron to appear in his film over the fairytale tentpole Snow White and The Huntsmen where she was due to play the Evil Queen but with the Huntsmen role being vacated by Tom Hardy and then later Michael Fassbender over scheduling, that one looks like an easy film for Theron to drop.

Hey, Hollywood -- Get These 11 In-Development Movies Made By The End Of 2011, OK?!

Posted 1/6/11 5:09 pm ET by Terri Schwartz in Commentary

11 movies to make in 2011

Another year is in the can, and we've seen some exciting new projects get picked up and some other promising films fall by the wayside. But what we're really sick of is so many super geekily awesome flicks spending ages languishing in production hell. So here's your New Year's resolution, Hollywood: Get these 11 films through the production process by the end of 2011 so we can have them in theaters by 2012. No more excuses and no more horsing around!

"Pride and Prejudice and Zombies"
Pretty much every young actress in Hollywood has been rumored to be attached to "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies." First it was Natalie Portman, then it was Scarlett Johansson, and now it apparently might be Anne Hathaway. Enough is enough! Now that director Mike White is on board, nail down your Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy, and let us see some classic Jane Austen characters deal with the zombie apocalypse!

"Gravity"
First "Gravity" had Angelina Jolie, then it had Robert Downey Jr., then it lost Jolie AND Downey and gained Sandra Bullock and George Clooney instead. Now that director Alfonso Cuaron has his leading lady and man, we think he should start filming immediately so that neither of them has a chance to back out.

"Snow White and the Huntsman"
Here's another one that's been juggling too many actors recently. Let's start with the Huntsman: First Tom Hardy was interested, then Johnny Depp, and now Michael Fassbender is looking at the role. And let's not even get started on the casting of Snow White, since Universal isn't sure whether they're going to go for an unknown or big name actress. At least Charlize Theron is still set as the evil queen Ravenna, though we're starting to worry that she's going to drop "Snow White and The Huntsman" since it's taking so long to get through production.

"Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter"
"Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" has such an all-star pedigree and awesome premise, we aren't sure why Hollywood actors aren't jumping all over this film. It's been placed on the Black List of screenplays this year, which automatically gives it a seal of approval, but we must admit that we were a little disappointed that Daniel Day-Lewis took another Lincoln project over this one. Still, there are plenty of other options, and Eric Bana is allegedly interested in the lead. Considering "Wanted"'s Timur Bekmambetov is still at the helm and the film has a June 22, 2012, release date, we're hoping that a casting announcement is made pretty soon.

"Oz: The Great and Powerful"
At least "Oz: The Great and Powerful" is in a relatively good state. It has Sam Raimi promising that this is going to be the next film that he makes, while Robert Downey Jr. (wow he's been in and out of a lot of movies on this list) is set for the title role of the Wizard of Oz. There are still the roles of three witches that need to be cast (Glinda, Evanora and Theodora), but that's the least of our worries. We just want filming to be finished before Downey gets torn away from this film by one of the many other projects he's attached to.

"Jack the Giant-Killer"
This is yet another film that's so close yet so far away from nailing down it's leading man. It had long been rumored that Aaron Johnson would play the title character in "Jack the Giant-Killer," but recently that opened up to him and two other actors battling out for the lead role. Similarly, there are three actresses being looked at for the female lead, but we think that must be down to two now that Lily Collins has been tapped as the lead in the "Mortal Instruments" franchise. Bryan Singer said that this would be his next film way back in September 2009, but considering it was supposed to start filming over the summer, things aren't looking so hot for "Jack."

"Dark Shadows"
Johnny Depp bought the rights for "Dark Shadows" back in 2007, and fans have been waiting and waiting and waiting since then for he and Tim Burton to get their acts together and film the project. In 2008, Burton promised they'd start filming in summer 2009, and in summer 2009 Burton promised cameras would roll in 2010, but this year has come and gone and no footage has been filmed. Depp did confirm to MTV last year that things were "very active" and, with "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" author Seth Grahame-Smith penning the script, it seems like wheels might actually be turning. But hey, we'll believe it when we see it.

"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close"
"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" is a film that hasn't languished in production hell for too long, but with the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks fast approaching, we think that it's about time this film his the screen. Director Stephen Daldry has been attached to the film since April, and just recently he found his main character, Oskar Schell, in the form of "Teen Jeopardy!" winner Thomas Horn. So it sounds like the film might be heading under the lens soon. But with busy actors Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks also attached to the film as Oskar's parents, we're worried that they might either bow out or delay filming if shooting doesn't get under way soon.

Untitled Will Ferrell/Zach Galifianakis Comedy
Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis's untitled political comedy satirizing the 2008 presidential election was only announced this month, but we have a feeling that this is a film that could be delayed and pushed back for years before it finally hits theaters. Unfortunately that wouldn't work out too well because the film is supposed to be released to coincide with the 2012 presidential elections. The film has a director (Jay Roach) and two screenwriters (Chris Henchy and Shawn Harwell), so give this movie a title and get it in front of cameras before Ferrell, Galifianakis and the 2008 drama become completely irrelevant.

"Ghostbusters 3"
It was, but then it didn't, and then it was, but then it didn't again. Then Ivan Reitman came on board, and it was still pushed back and things really weren't looking so good. Now Reitman is guaranteeing a Christmas 2012 release date and Dan Aykroyd is throwing out potential new cast members left and right. Well, that would be nice if he actually told the cast members that they were cast. Someone get their act together on this movie, please.

"Arrested Development"
Don't even get us started. Either get this movie made or drop it for good. And by that we mean: Get this movie made now!

What in-development movies do you definitely want to see filmed by the end of 2011?

Viggo Mortensen & Kristen Stewart For ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’
Jan 26, 2011 by Rob Keyes

Kristen Stewart joins the shortlist of talent for the role of Snow White opposite Viggo Mortensen’s Huntsman in Universal Pictures’ take on the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale.

While Viggo Mortensen may have lost out to Javier Bardem (and maybe Christian Bale too) for the lead role in The Dark Tower adaptation, that’s not going to stop him from getting his deserved starring gig.

Johnny Depp and Michael Fassbender were previously rumored to take on the title character of the Huntsman in the more romantic version of the classic fairy tale Snow White, but Viggo Mortensen was chosen for the part and is now in negotiations to star in Snow White and the Huntsman. The latest reports also indicate that Twilight star Kristen Stewart is a contender to co-star as the other title character.

Universal is sold on who they want to play the Huntsman but are still testing actresses for the part of Snow White. Stewart joins a list which also includes Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) who screen-tested last week for the part. Should the studio sign Stewart as Snow White, I have no doubt that some will scoff at the casting choice. I however, can picture her on screen alongside the friendly mentor of Mortensen’s much older Huntsman character, whose role in the film is an expansion of the character’s minor part in the original story of Snow White.

Stewart’s casting in this retelling of The Brothers Grimm story would mark her first major studio lead role outside of the Twilight franchise since it began and a departure from her less-mainstream indie fare as of late. Snow White and the Huntsman is one of three different Snow White movies in development and its cast may also include Charlize Theron as the evil queen.

Should all three actors sign, Universal’s take on Snow White would boast a strong cast of A-list talent. You can never go wrong with Viggo as your star so it sounds like director Rupert Sanders has a lot of potential to play with in bringing Evan Daugherty’s screenplay to life.

Viggo Mortensen won’t appear in Snow White and the Huntsman

by Liam on March 26, 2011 · View Comments

viggo mortensen After months of negotiations with Universal Viggo Mortensen has decided not to appear in Snow White and the Huntsman. No reason was given, although Variety speculate that he may have dropped out to play the villain in Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot. Both intend to start shooting in the second half of the year, so Viggo may have decided to appear in his first comic book movie.

This telling of Snow White focuses on the Huntsman who is hired by the evil queen (Charlize Theron) to track down her runaway stepdaughter (Kristen Stewart). After realizing the queen intends to kill Snow White, he helps her escape, and the pair go on the run. Johnny Depp, Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender have all been linked to the role of the Huntsman over the pasts few months, so it looks like Universal will have to find another in-demand actor who isn’t busy elsewhere.

Lily Collins Joins 'Snow White,' And Here's Everyone Else Involved In The Competing Fairy Tales

Posted 5 hrs ago by Katie Calautti in Casting Call, News

Lily CollinsMove over, vampire genre – on the heels of “Red Riding Hood,” it seems that fairy tale flicks are the next big thing.

Case in point: the battle between Relativity Media and Universal to add A-list pedigrees to their respective reimaginings of Snow White. We already know that Kristen Stewart nabbed the lead role in Universal’s “Snow White and the Huntsman,” but Relativity hadn’t found their girl until recently – this past Friday, to be exact, when it was announced that Lily Collins has signed on for the role of Snow White.

The latest casting leads to the big question, as our friends at Hollywood Crush so astutely point out: which Snow are you looking forward to more, Lily or Kristen's? No matter your preference, if you’re anything like us, the giddiness ushered by the prospect of a new spin on a beloved classic dwarfs (ha!) our confusion over the ever-breaking casting news for the separate movies. In an effort to put all our excitement into one poison apple-free basket, we’ve created a handy rundown of the celebrities on board for each production.

RELATIVITY’S (YET UNTITLED) SNOW WHITE:
Lily Collins (Snow White): Collins’ filmography is limited, but we loved what we saw of her in “The Blind Side.” Her ability to play strong, spunky and compassionate – along with her innocent, pure visage – will serve her well in the role.

Julia Roberts (the Evil Queen): Sure, Roberts has broken out of her image as “America’s Sweetheart” with layered and edgy turns in films like “Closer,” “Erin Brokovich,” and “Charlie Wilson’s War,” but she has yet to play a purely malevolent character – we think she’ll have a lot of fun with this.

Armie Hammer (Prince Andrew Alcott): The “Social Network” hottie is pitch-perfect for the part of the handsome prince – he’s tall, built, blonde, and he’s got a winning smile. Too bad they’ll only need one of him in this flick!

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN:
Kristen Stewart (Snow White): Thanks to “Twilight,” KStew already has a massive following with this movie’s core audience – built-in box office success, right there. Aside from that, though, Kristen’s proven that she can play the vulnerable card – a key aspect of the fairy tale heroine’s arc.

Charlize Theron (the Evil Queen): The fable’s antagonist is generally translated as an old, haggard woman, so it’s hard to imagine Theron’s stunning, statuesque blonde and blue-eyed physique transformed into an icy, menacing antagonist. Then again, she did win an Oscar for her ability to inhabit a character with a polar opposite appearance (2003’s “Monster”), so perhaps this role will be a cakewalk in comparison.

No longer Viggo Mortensen (The Huntsman): As THR mentioned, Mortensen was in talks to play the role of Snow White’s assassin-turned-guardian, but the deal fell through – so the role has yet to be filled. We recently ruminated on our top picks for his replacement, and – not to play favorites – we'd love to see Michael Fassbender land the job. After seeing him in the gruff-yet-intriguing role of Edward Rochester in “Jane Eyre,” we think he’d positively bring it as The Huntsman.

Tell us which "Snow White" cast you're more excited by in the comments section and on Twitter!
