Soderbergh to film in Santa Fe
New Mexico Business Weekly

One of the independent film world’s biggest names will shoot part of a movie in New Mexico this spring.

Steven Soderbergh, the producer behind “Syriana” and director of “Oceans 11,” “Traffic” and “Sex, Lies and Videotape,” will film “Knockout” for about 30 days in Santa Fe during March and April.

The production will hire about 100 New Mexicans for the cast and crew. The star is mixed-martial artist Gina Carano. The cast includes Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum and Michael Angarano.

The film was written by Lem Dobbs and is the story of a spy, played by Carano, who works for a private security company similar to the former Blackwater firm and is betrayed by one of her colleagues. The production is currently shooting in Europe.

Gov. Bill Richardson used the announcement of the film shoot here to reiterate his support for the industry and the argument that it’s providing revenue and jobs for the state.

More than 130 major film and television productions have been produced here since 2003, the year Richardson took office. The state Film Office said the estimated economic impact has been $3 billion.

Governor Bill Richardson Announces Steven Soderbergh, All-Star Cast to Film "Knockout" inNew Mexico

SANTA FE-Governor Bill Richardson today announced that the Steven Soderbergh film "Knockout", from Relativity Media and Lionsgate, will shoot inNew Mexico for approximately 30 days during March and April. The movie will shoot in the Santa Fe area and is expected to hire about 100 New Mexicans for the cast and crew.

"I am a big fan of Steven Soderbergh's work and I am excited he is bringing this project to New Mexico," said Governor Richardson. "I commend my film and media advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff Eric Witt, as well as Director of the New Mexico Film Office Lisa Strout and her staff for continuing to recruit major film and television productions to the state. This not only provides revenue for the state and jobs for our citizens, it encourages our young people who are training for a career in film, and helps build a sustainable industry."

"We've had great experiences working in New Mexico and we are thrilled to partner with Steven Soderbergh on this film", said Relativity Media president of production, Tucker Tooley.

Steven Soderbergh ("Ocean's 11", "The Informant!") is directing "Knockout", which stars mixed-martial artist Gina Carano. The star-studded cast includes Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum and Michael Angarano.

"Knockout", written by Lem Dobbs, is the story of a spy (Carano) who works for a Blackwater-style security contractor and is betrayed by one of her teammates. The production is currently shooting in Europe.

Since Governor Richardson took office in 2003 more than 130 major film and television productions have been made in New Mexico, with an estimated economic impact of $3-billion. There are 10,000 direct and indirect film-related jobs in the state, and more than 250 businesses and services directly related to the industry.
