Soderbergh to film in Santa Fe
New Mexico Business Weekly
One of the independent film world’s biggest names will shoot part of a movie in New Mexico this spring.
Steven Soderbergh, the producer behind “Syriana” and director of “Oceans 11,” “Traffic” and “Sex, Lies and Videotape,” will film “Knockout” for about 30 days in Santa Fe during March and April.
The production will hire about 100 New Mexicans for the cast and crew. The star is mixed-martial artist Gina Carano. The cast includes Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum and Michael Angarano.
The film was written by Lem Dobbs and is the story of a spy, played by Carano, who works for a private security company similar to the former Blackwater firm and is betrayed by one of her colleagues. The production is currently shooting in Europe.
Gov. Bill Richardson used the announcement of the film shoot here to reiterate his support for the industry and the argument that it’s providing revenue and jobs for the state.
More than 130 major film and television productions have been produced here since 2003, the year Richardson took office. The state Film Office said the estimated economic impact has been $3 billion.
