Michael Fassbender, Tom Hardy and Andrew Garfield: The new A-list
Move over Brad Pitt and George Clooney, there’s a new breed of actors queueing in the A-list wings. From Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy to Andrew Garfield and Jeremy Renner, we talk you through the latest big stars...

Jeremy Renner… is the next Matt Damon

After a breakthrough with 2008 Oscar-winner The Hurt Locker and backing up Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, the actor has replaced Damon in the new Bourne movie, out this summer. He’s also got two more action films in 2012, The Avengers and Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters.

Andrew Garfield… is the next Leonardo DiCaprio

The English star of The Social Network is not an obvious heartthrob but a starring role as an angst-ridden superhero in this summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man should cement his place as the ‘emo’ Leo.

Michael Fassbender… is the next George Clooney

A year ago, this may have sounded like a long shot but after five prominent roles in 12 months, including a comic book villain and a sex addict, the German/Irish actor is on a roll. And he has Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel Prometheus to come. There’s a reason Clooney made a gag about the size of Fassbender’s equipment at the Golden Globes – he’s scared.

Alexander Skarsgård… is the next Brad Pitt

The True Blood actor bears some resemblance to Pitt and oozes similar sex appeal. The Swedish son of Stellan Skarsgård can also compete with Pitt’s range, working with European film-makers such as Lars Von Trier for Melancholia, before taking the lead in the silly summer blockbuster Battleship.

Tom Hardy… is the next Sean Penn

If you want brooding menace, the London-born actor is your new go-to man. The 34-year-old can also bulk up to provide a hulking physical presence, as seen in Warrior and this summer’s The Dark Knight Rises, in which he plays Batman baddie Bane. A mooted role as Al Capone for a gangster trilogy would undoubtedly seal his position as the A-list anti-hero.
