Michael Fassbender Finds his ‘Jane Eyre’

12 Mar 2010 |

Michael Fassbender
Production will commence shortly on the set of ‘Jane Eyre’. The new interpretation of the Charlotte Brontë novel from ‘Sin Nombre’ director Cary Fukunaga will see Irish actor Michael Fassbender take on the role of the ominous Mr. Rochester opposite Mia Wasikowska, Judi Dench and Jamie Bell.

Michael Fassbender, lauded with an IFTA for his portrayal of hunger striker Bobby Sands in ‘Hunger’, will take on a very different role in the shape of the portentous Mr Rochester who both terrifies and captivates his timorous new governess, Jane Eyre. As mentioned above Jane will be played by Mia Wasikowska who is currently appearing in Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ as the title character. The other cast members involved with the project are Judi Dench (Notes on a Scandal) as Mrs. Fairfax; Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) as St. John Eyre Rivers and Sally Hawkins (Happy Ever Afters) as Mrs. Reed.

Cameras will start rolling on the film’s set on Monday, March 22nd and the shoot will last for eight weeks. The film will shoot on location in London and Derbyshire. The film is a co-production between BBC Films, Focus Features and Ruby Films and is expected to be released in early 2011.

‘Jane Eyre’ tells the story of the title character’s harsh upbringing as an orphan and eventual employment as governess in Mr Rochester’s household. Though afraid of her new employer Jane finds herself falling in love with him. When it seems that Jane can, for once, be happy it transpires that Mr. Rochester has kept a terrible secret from her.

Charlotte Brontë’s novel has been adapted for the big screen by Moira Buffini (The Enlightenment) and is produced by Alison Owen (Elizabeth) and Paul Trijbits (executive producer, The Wind that Shakes the Barley). The director of photography is Adriano Goldman (City of Men).

Michael Fassbender Excited By Rochester Role

Michael Fassbender has admitted that he is excited about taking on the role of Rochester is a new movie adaptation of Jane Eyre.

The Inglourious Basterds star is all set to appear alongside Alice In Wonderland actress Mia Wasikowska in the Cary Joji Fukunaga directed movie.

In an interview with Empire Fassbender said: "I was close to doing Wuthering Heights a couple of years ago, And you don't get Heathcliff, Rochester has got to be second on the list.

"It's a great role, there are so many layers to him. He's been hurt, and there's cruelty to him which I look for ward to exploring.

"And Mia is such a great talent; she's going to be a big star."

Fassbender has really mixed and matched his roles over the last twelve months moving from the war movie Inglourious Basterds to Andrea Arnold British movie Fish Tank, which won rave reviews.

His first venture onto the big screen this year comes in the form of Centurion, which is directed by Neil Marshall, and follows the Ninth legion's battle with the Picts.

The actor is also set to team up with Josh Brolin and Megan Fox for Johan Hex.
