Fish Tank to possibly released in the US

The same company that released Hunger is looking at Fish Tank

Criterion to possibly release Fish Tank in the US. (whoo-hoo!)

First Look At Fish Tank In The Criterion Collection [Rumor?]
By Ryan Gallagher on April 15, 2010, 9:26 pm

This past February, Criterion sent out their monthly newsletter, talking about where they’ve been and where they’re going. This particular newsletter also mentioned Fish Tank director Andrea Arnold by name, indicating that we’d see something from her this year.

Well let’s look at what we know:

* IFC has the rights to Fish Tank
* Criterion and IFC have their deal
* Criterion tweeted out the image below, as part of their cryptic Twitter / Rumor strategy.

Well, that sounds like an open and shut case, right? Over the past few weeks we’ve seen Criterion tweet out images from The Thin Red Line and Antichrist, so it just makes sense that this image seals the deal.

Here is the synopsis of the film from IFC:

FISH TANK is the story of Mia (Katie Jarvis) a volatile 15-year-old who has become excluded from school and ostracized by her friends. One hot summer’s day her mother (Kiertson Wareing) brings home a mysterious stranger called Connor (Michael Fassbender) who promises to change everything and bring love into all their lives.

Below I’ve included the image that Criterion tweeted out, as well as a screen capture of the film, for comparison.

What do you think of Fish Tank as a possible Criterion release? Is there such a thing as too much Michael Fassbender?

(DUH! NO!)

Ten Criterion Collection Releases We’re Still Waiting For

With yesterdays announcement of the October releases, I thought it was about time to evaluate what has been hinted at over the past several months, in order to see what is still theoretically due for a 2010 Criterion Collection release.

I went through and picked ten releases, not always individual titles, that I think we should expect as a release in November / December of this year. Now it is certainly probable that a few of these titles might not surface until 2011, due to any number of conflicting circumstances, but I think they’re all safe bets.

A few months back I went through the “Cryptic New Years Drawing” that Criterion posted back in January, hinting at a dozen or so titles that we all came to expect releases for. As far as I can tell, most have been announced, save one or two, depending on how you read the imagery.

With Criterion’s constant teasing at future releases, either on Twitter, Facebook, or in their e-mail newsletter, there is certainly a well to draw from, so if I forgot to mention one that you are particularly interested in seeing, leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

4. Fish Tank

Another IFC title that has been teased at in newsletters and in cryptic images tweeted out by Criterion, Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank is certainly due for a proper DVD/Blu-ray release. This release would also see another appearance by Michael Fassbender into the Collection.

We’ve discussed this possibility on past episodes of the podcast, as well as in this post, in which I compare the image tweeted out, to a screen capture of the UK DVD.

Criterion Collection Announces February 2011 release slate

November 15th, 2010

With 2010 drawing ever so close to its final days, those at the Criterion Collection are already looking forward to what they will be releasing come the second month of 2011.

And boy, oh boy, it’s one hell of a lineup. After the break, check out the full listing of the Criterion Collection’s February 2011 releases, and some of my thoughts on these exciting picks.

Now, onto the new releases, and it’s a foursome that Criterion geeks havebeen waiting for withbaited breath.

First off, the big announcement – Andrea Arnold’s 2009 masterpiece, FISH TANK. This writer’s secondfavorite film of last year (right behind WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE), FISH TANK follows a 15 year old girl named Mia, who “is in a constant state of war with her family andthe world around her, without any creative outlet for her considerable energies save a secret loveof hip-hop dance. When she meets her party-girl mother’s charming new boyfriend Connor (Michael Fassbender), she is amazed to find he returns her attention, and believes he might help her start to make sense of her life.”

The film is a stunning, kitchen sink style drama that takes the now popular neo-neo-realist style of filmmakers like Ramin Bahrani, and uses a truly moving andpowerful narrative as the canvas on which to paint with those verite-like colors. It’s got top notch performances from top to bottom, and is easily one of my 20 favorite films from the past decade. Yes, it’s that good. And so is this release.

Criterion February 2011 Slate Includes ‘Sweet Smell Of Success,’ ‘Fish Tank,’ ‘Senso’

It looks like Criterion‘s February 2011 slate is primed to bankrupt us so we’ll definitely be socking away the money Grandma sent with her Christmas card this year so we can snag some of these. Split between two classics and two celebrated contemporary films, the February slate is a strong one.

On the contemporary side of things, The Criterion Collection’s relationship with IFC continues to bear fruit as Andrea Arnold‘s breakout “Fish Tank” will get some special attention. The film, a breakout for director Arnold and for the film’s star Katie Jarvis, follows the coming-of-age of a teenage girl in the housing projects of Essex. The film will feature all three of Arnold’s shorts to date “Milk,” “Dog,” and “Wasp” in addition to an interview with Michael Fassbender, audition footage and more. This one will arrive both on DVD and BluRay.
