Universal is pushing for The Bourne Legacy to be released in 2012 no matter what. I know what you are thinking. How the hell could they pull it off without Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass?! I’m with you, but here at TFS we want to consider the possibilities of this franchise. Here are twenty choices that wouldn’t (completely) screw up the franchise.

10. Zac Efron

Efron’s got the acting chops for something like this. With a few push-ups and maybe a haircut, this young stud could fill the Bourne void just as quickly as if he were 17…again. – Dan M.

9. Ryan Phillipe

The general consensus around the block seems to be that Mr. Phillippe’s career is on the permanent down slope. Even a co-starring job (MacGruber) looks like a failed comeback. But a comeback from what? The young thespian’s been grinding out solid performances in less solid flicks (Franklyn, Stop-Loss, Flags of Our Fathers) over the last few years. And let us not forget his best performance was playing a man who stopped a spy (Breach). – Dan M.

8. James MacAvoy

MacAvoy has been a star on the rise in the US since his breakthrough performance in The Last King of Scotland but has yet to reach a significant level of stardom. His association with Wanted gave his career a significant boost and taking on the Bourne series could turn him into a household name. – John L.

7. Mads Mikkelsen

By far the most “out there” casting suggestion on the list. Mikkelsen is a brute force of cinema, be he a good guy, bad guy or “good but kind of bad” guy. A straightforward choice he is not, but then neither were Michael Keaton as Batman or RDJ as Iron Man, and look how they turned out. Mikkelsen as Bourne would be strange, hard to explain and exciting to watch. - Dan M.

6. Chiwetel Ejiofor

Ejiofor is one of the greatest actors that no one is paying much attention to. He’s proven his versatility in films such as Kinky Boots, Talk To Me and Redbelt. It would be great to see the producers of Bourne 4 think outside the box and cast Ejiofor. – John L.

5. Clive Owen

Clive Owen has cemented himself as the go-to guy for mediocre actioneers but has also been effective in films like Children of Men. Taking over the role of Jason Bourne could work either way for the actor as the character has potential for greatness but the recasting of the character for a 4th film could result in a sea of mediocrity. – John L.

4. Chris Pine

This one’s a stretch, considering Mr. Pine’s now-beloved turn as the franchise-friendly Captain Kirk. But then Pine’s the right age, has the right look and has yet to disappoint. After all, Ryan Reynolds’ playing Deadpool and Green Lantern. Anything can happen. – Dan M.

3. Ryan Gosling

Gosling’s certainly one of the most talented actors on this list, and one of the most versatile. As he currently preps the actioner Drive with Nicholas Winding Refn, one has to wonder if this fits in with the actor’s new studio-friendly direction. – Dan M.

2. Michael Fassbender

Fassbender has had a strange, dream-like rise to fame. He co-starred in an action epic (300), then backed it up with acting chops in a critical darling (Fish Tank) and a high-budget art film (Inglourious Basterds). The man can do no wrong right now. Updating a successful franchise actually seems like a logical choice, provided he can still take art house sabbaticals from time to time. – Dan M.

1. Jeremy Renner

Though it feels like a strange choice at first glance, Renner’s perfect for Jason Bourne. An agent who’s isolated, cynical, fearless and precise. Remind you of any recent Renner performance in particular? - Dan M.

Matt Damon claims ‘nobody bothered to call’ him about THE BOURNE LEGACY

* October 25, 2010 6:28 pm
* Matt Holmes

I’m guessing you would need two hands to count how many times Matt Damon turned down Universal’s lucrative advances for him to return for a fourth ‘Bourne’ movie.

Bearing that in mind, his cynical and bitter comments about ‘The Bourne Legacy’ which Tony Gilroy shoots next year without Jason Bourne involved as a character, just seems so unnecessary.

“I found out they’re making another when somebody saw it on the Internet. Nobody bothered to call me. I’m not in it, but even so, they’ll work ‘Bourne’ into the title I guess. Universal just wants to call everything the Bourne something. So I guess they are trying to make another franchise and as they say, ‘It isn’t over until it’s over.’”

The truth is Damon gave up his right to complain about this series when he said the franchise was done in his eyes. And honestly, he’s getting off lightly compared to other franchise leads and their beloved creations. They haven’t re-cast his role and they have left it completely open for him to return further down the road, whenever he wants.

Speaking of ‘The Bourne Legacy’; I’m seeing a lot of fans call out for Chris Pine and Tom Hardy to take up the mantle and yes I would love to see either lead ‘The Bourne Legacy’ but the chances of either being cast are slim to non-existent.

‘The Bourne Legacy’ already has a August 2012 release date set, and Pine (Jack Ryan reboot, followed by ‘Star Trek 2′) and Hardy (‘Batman 3′ followed by ‘Mad Max’) are simply actors out of reach for Universal on this one. You’ll have to think a wider net for who it could be, though the way he is being courted for everything, I guess the next rumour will be Michael Fassbender.

Who Could Lead The Bourne Legacy?
Gyllenhaal, Maguire and more considered

25 February 2011

One by one, the list of hot projects that half the actors in Hollywood (and elsewhere) are chasing has been ticked off as high-profile roles such as Captain America, Jack the Giant Killer and Spider-Man have been filled. But there always seem to be new ones cropping up to replace them, and the latest part generating some hefty buzz is Tony Gilroy’s Bourne series spin-off, The Bourne Legacy.

According to Deadline, the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer, Taylor Kitsch and Benjamin Walker have all either taken meetings with the writer/director or are being considered.

That’s certainly a long list, and though it’s understandable why just about every young actor would want a crack at it, several of those names above are the repeat offenders who get linked to every role under the sun these days (we’re looking at you Pettyfer. And you, Kitsch). So even if they’re chasing the part, chances are they’ll fall out due to scheduling issues.

Plus, there’s the issue of carrying the Bourne-free Bourne entry in the franchise, since Matt Damon won't be back this time. The work done by Damon and Paul Greengrass in the last couple of outings will be tough acts to follow, and no one wants to be the person who besmirched the legacy of the franchise (see what we did there, eh? Eh?)

Variety reports that Gilroy apparently has his list of top picks, and Universal’s executives have also been suggesting names, which explains the rather long list above. Expect that to be trimmed quickly, as Gilroy wants to get shooting the thing by the autumn ready for a planned release in August next year.

Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Garrett Hedlund, Others Up For ‘The Bourne Legacy’

Posted on Thursday, February 24th, 2011 by Germain Lussier

Oscar-nominated writer/director Tony Gilroy is looking for an assassin to replace Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne in The Bourne Legacy, the fourth Bourne film, scheduled for release August 3, 2012. According to Variety, his list includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch and Kellan Lutz. Deadline is reporting a much longer list though, which includes those names as well as Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer, and Benjamin Walker, though several might have scheduling conflicts. Read more about how Gilroy will come to a decision, and the film itself, after the jump.

In the Variety story, it says that Gilroy – who wrote the first three films – has a very good idea of what kind of actor he wants but that Universal also gave him their own set of names. The aforementioned list is reportedly little of column A and a little of column B. (And, if I had to guess, I’d say actors like Edgerton, Gyllenhaal, Maguire and are Gilroy’s choices while people like Hartnett, Hedlund, Kitsch and Lutz are Universal’s – just a guess.)

Variety also makes a point to say there’s no guarantee that the role will go to one of those actors. Gilroy reportedly wants everyone to screen test (a deal breaker for some actors) and isn’t opposed to casting an unknown, especially since the franchise title sells itself at this point.

No matter who gets cast though, the biggest hurdle for Gilroy will be winning over audiences who will be expecting Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in a movie called The Bourne Legacy. According to Gilroy’s most recent comments though, this film will leave the door open for his return and take place in the same world as the other films. Bourne just won’t be the focus this time around.

I’m not going to get into the plot, but you saw the other three films, you know everything that happened, and it’s not a dream sequence. What I can say is, you thought that was the whole world, but it was a small piece of what was going on. Ultimatum exploded at the end with people arrested. We deal with that as a reality, it has ramifications that echo out into the larger world. And of course, Jason Bourne is still alive and out there in the world.

Out of the people on that list, who do you think most fits the role of a deadly, ass-kicking assassin? Also remember that, when The Bourne Identity came out, no one would have answered that question with the name “Matt Damon.”

Tony Gilroy Casts Net For 'Bourne' Spinoff
By MIKE FLEMING | Thursday February 24, 2011 @ 10:48pm

The hot role for young actors right now is the lead in The Bourne Identity spinoff that will start production this fall with Tony Gilroy directing his script for Universal. Here are the names I've heard have met with Gilroy or are otherwise in the mix: Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer, Taylor Kitsch, Benjamin Walker. Gilroy will pare the list quickly. Several of the actors might have availability issues. Stay tuned.

'Bourne Legacy' could star Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, or...Paul Dano?! A casting agent weighs in.
by Chris Nashawaty

Who will be the next Jason Bourne? That’s the question that’s got Hollywood buzzing today after a bunch of names were floated online as possible stars of summer 2012′s The Bourne Legacy. Ever since Matt Damon said that he wouldn’t be returning for a fourth installment in the action-packed, amnesiac spy franchise, fans of the series — and its creators — have wondered who would fill his sizable shoes. Tony Gilroy, who wrote the first three chapters and who will direct Legacy instead of Paul Greengrass, is now reportedly in the process of meeting several young Hollywood actors for the spin-off film. It should be noted that none of these actors would be playing Damon’s character, Jason Bourne, but rather another assassin on the run a la Bourne. The list is a mix of Who’s Who and Who’s That?

While neither Universal nor Gilroy’s reps will confirm the names being floated, others have told EW that this list is neither full nor accurate. Still, there’s no reason not to take a look at some of the contenders vying to keep Damon’s seat warm until he hopefully decides to return. We asked one veteran Hollywood casting agent to weigh in on the list. Trust me, you’ll want to read what the agent had to say:

Jake Gyllenhaal: “I love Jake Gyllenhaal and he’s certainly in shape, but all of his movies have bombed. Price of Persia, or whatever it was called, my teenage daughter didn’t go to it.”

Tobey Maguire: “Why would he want to do this? He’s already been Spider-Man. He’s smart enough to be a Jason Bourne type and he’s an intelligent actor, but I can’t imagine he’d want to do this.”

Garrett Hedlund: “He was in TRON: Legacy, but I still don’t think people know who he is. I guess it depends what kind of audience they’re going for. Is it just teenagers? Because that’s not what the other Bourne films were. They appealed to older audiences too, and they were smart. My mother doesn’t know who Garrett Hedlund is.”

Taylor Kitsch: “There’s another one who I just don’t think is well known enough. He’s all-American-looking and he’s going to be in Battleship, but I don’t know if he can carry a movie. They may want to wait until Battleship comes out before they decide to cast him. I mean, he’s up-and-coming, but I don’t know if you want to hang a franchise on someone who’s up-and-coming.”

Kellan Lutz: “People know him because of the Twilight movies. But again, who is the audience for this movie? Where’s James Franco’s name? Because he’s the first person I would have thought of.”

Joel Edgerton: “He was terrific in Animal Kingdom and he’s going to be in The Thing. I like him and he’s got the right look. He’s Australian and he’s a wonderful actor. I saw him onstage in A Streetcar Named Desire. That might be an interesting choice.”

Josh Hartnett: “If you’d asked me five years ago, I might say yes. He’s a wonderful person. But I don’t know. Who knows, this could be the thing that puts him back on the map.”

Paul Dano: “What?! He’s the oddest name on the list, but he is super-talented. Maybe if they got him into shape.”

Michael Pitt: “Again, if you’d asked me before Boardwalk Empire, I would have laughed at you. But he was terrific in that. It could be an interesting choice. A really interesting choice.”

Oscar Isaac: “Oscar Isaac? Where are you getting these names? NO!”

Michael Fassbender: “Before you told me any of these names, two people came to mind who would be perfect for this: James Franco and Michael Fassbender. Yes. He’s got the acting ability and the sex appeal…for men and women. He’s hot stuff.”

Luke Evans: “Yeah, he’s good. He’s going to be in The Three Musketeers, but I don’t think people know who he is.”

Alex Pettyfer: “He’s in I Am Number Four. He’s fine. People are high on him right now. But I think he might not be ready yet.”

Benjamin Walker: “I like him. I saw him onstage in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. He’s terrific and people are interested in him because he’s with Meryl Streep’s daughter, Mamie Gummer. But is he known enough? Can you hang a series on him?”

So that’s what the pro has to say. Who do you think should star in the next Bourne movie?

Ten Actors and Ten Directors That Could Take Over ‘Bourne 4’ Empty Re: Ten Actors and Ten Directors That Could Take Over ‘Bourne 4’

http://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/popcornbiz/Bourne-Again-Looking-for-New-Hero-116908233.html

They're Looking for a "Bourne" Again

It's actually happening--they're actually moving forward in the "Bourne" universe without Jason Bourne himself, Matt Damon.

Tony Gilroy, writer of the three previous "Bourne" films, has written a spin-off, "The Bourne Legacy," featuring a different hero, which he will also be directing. And now the search has begun for the film's lead.

Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Kellan Lutz, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer, Taylor Kitsch, Benjamin Walker are on the "short list" of actors that Gilroy is considering, reported Deadline and Variety. The list is expected to be trimmed in short order.

Gilroy is obviously a talented writer, and he did a great job directing "Michael Clayton," and even "Duplicity" was better than most of us remember it. If they're determined to continue the Bourne franchise without Damon, it's at least in the hands of the right guy, but we're still not happy.

Without getting into their schedules/availability, let's break each of the candidates down in 5 words or less:

Joel Edgerton: Great choice

Josh Hartnett: No

Jake Gyllenhaal: Good in "Source Code," maybe

Tobey Maguire: Already helped kill one franchise

Paul Dano: Love him, can't see it

Michael Pitt: Too pretty

Oscar Isaac: Never happen

Garrett Hedlund: Only if "Tron" dies

Michael Fassbender: Hell to the yes

Luke Evans: Interesting...

Alex Pettyfer: We'd prefer Hartnett

Taylor Kitsch: You sank my Battleship!

Benjamin Walker: Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Kellan Lutz: Can he act?

‘Bourne Legacy’ Lead Up For Grabs

Jason Bourne Matt Damon

Matt Damon is a tough act to follow, and I wouldn’t like to be the person chosen to attempt to do in the Bourne series. Not that there is any chance of that, obviously, but it appears I’m one of the few 30-something males not vying for the lead role in The Bourne Legacy.

The lead role in The Bourne Legacy isn’t actually Jason Bourne, portrayed so well by Matt Damon in the previous three films. As previously explained (as reported by Dark Horizons) by director Tony Gilroy:

[The Bourne Legacy is not a] reboot or a recast or a prequel. [Instead] there will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter…this is a stand-alone project. Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive…We’re going to show you the bigger picture, the bigger canvas. When you see what we’re going and see what we’re doing it’ll be pretty obvious….but Jason Bourne’s activities in the first three films is the immediate trigger.”

With that in mind, the list of names being bandied about to play this new character is exhaustive. Take a deep breath: Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Josh Hartnett, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Paul Dano, Joel Edgerton, Alex Pettyfer, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Luke Evans, Taylor Kitsch, Kellan Lutz, and Benjamin Walker.

This is a clever way of continuing with the Bourne franchise while not blowing the chances of Damon (and possibly Paul Greengrass) coming back into the fold further down the line. But I’d still like to see the right man given the job. My personal preference would be Michael Fassbender.

The LONG List Of ‘Bourne’s

Morning all,

So with Matt Damon becoming like this gigantic mega star with flicks like Invictus, True Grit and the upcoming Adjustment Bureau I guess it’s only fair to let him off the hook when he decided not to reprise his role of Jason Bourne in the Bourne saga. I mean, he did do three action packed Bond-like flicks that saw him beat up on some pretty badass dudes. Whether or not it was Damon’s decision to leave Jason Bourne behind or if the story just progressed that way, one thing is for sure, we’re going to get a new Bourne. The 4th Bourne will take just the name of the series and that’s pretty much it as director Tony Gilroy has decided to go with a completely new story line to continue the saga of secretly trained CIA super-spies.

So who’s going to play the lead? Good question and according to unconfirmed reports from around the unreliable Interwebs, the list is LONG! Now, some of the names on this list are complete longshots, meaning I think I’d abandon the series if they were cast as the new lead. This bunch includes Kellen Lutz from Twilight, Alex Pettyfer from I Am Number 4, Toby McGuire from old Spiderman, Taylor Kitsch from Wolverine, Michael Pitt from Boardwalk Empire, Joel Edgardton from the Star Wars prequels, Josh Hartnett from Pearl Harbour, Oscar Isaac from Robin Hood and Shia LeBouf from Transformers. Now that’s a long list and for all it’s worth, it’s basically just a list of names that people have strung together. I know what you’re probably thinking, there’s no way any of these guys can pull off a Bourne flick and to be honest, you’re probably right. So it’s a good thing Gilroy is also looking at the following:

jake The LONG List Of Bournes

Jake Gyllenhaal – Although I’m not the biggest fan of the guy who played Donnie Darko, he definitely fits the part of a Bourne-type a lot more than the group mentioned above.

hudland The LONG List Of Bournes

Garret Hudland – So far the only really huge part this guy has taken on has been Tron: Legacy and he wasn’t terrible so I’d stick him in a group of possibilities.

dano The LONG List Of Bournes

Paul Dano – Sure he’s kind of a skinny guy, but he’s high on talent especially compared to most of the guys in this list. You’ll remember his role from Little Miss Sunshine and his unforgettable part in There Will Be Blood. You’ll also see him in Cowboys & Aliens later on this year.

evans The LONG List Of Bournes

Luke Evans – He’s a bit of an unknown to most, but you’ll see him in the new Three Musketeers later on this year. I think if Gilroy wasn’t going to use a gigantic name, Evans would be a good choice.

Benjamin Walker The LONG List Of Bournes

Benjamin Walker – Another relatively unknown, but again, if Gilroy wanted to use someone new, Walker has the chops as he’s shown in Flags Of Our Fathers. He’ll also be playing Abe in the upcoming Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

fassbender The LONG List Of Bournes

Michael Fassbender – Easily the best choice of all of the names released thus far. Fassbender is making a big name for himself by playing great characters in flicks like Inglorious Basterds, 300 and I’m sure you’ll remember him most as Erik Lehnsherr in the upcoming X-Men: First Class flick.

So that’s the list so far and as you can tell, this is already getting out of hand. My two cents, for what it’s worth, would be to either go the completely unknown route with Evans or Walker or use someone who would be a sure-thing, like Fassbender. We’ll have to wait and see!

Shia LaBeouf Rumored for ‘The Bourne Legacy’
Published on March 1, 2011 by Nick Newman

I don’t hate Shia LaBeouf. While he might not be a “great” actor, he’s shown in past work that he can deliver a solid performance when it’s called upon him. But that doesn’t mean he should get every role suggested for him.

This is certainly a case of being rumored for a role that probably won’t fit him. And that happens to be (drum roll, please)…the lead role in The Bourne Legacy. LatinoReview tells us that just like all the other rumored actors, he’s met with writer and director Tony Gilroy in Los Angeles, and is “in the mix.” What that basically means is that he’s being considered along with all the other actors who are rumored to take on the new, unnamed character in the series’ fourth movie. Gilroy already said that while Matt Damon could return in the future, we shouldn’t expect him in this movie. This is also, like the other movies, not directly based on the books they take their title from, and are only inspired by them.

The many other actors rumored for the part include Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch, Kellan Lutz, Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer, and Benjamin Walker. Going by that list, I’ll just say this: the worst choice is Dano or Pettyfer, while the best is probably Fassbender. Because he is, frankly, just the man.

Universal is planning to shoot later this year for a summer 2012 release.

What do you think of LaBeouf in the lead for The Bourne Legacy? If he’s not your top choice, who do you like the most for the role? The least?

The Search for "Bourne" Continues
3/25/2011 5:10 PM EST

Finding a replacement for Matt Damon won't be easy, but creators of the "Bourne Identity" franchise are certainly trying their best to fill his shoes.

The list is now narrowed down to four possibilities. All four actors will be doing screen tests in April for the role. Said actors are Luke Evans, Joel Edgerton, Dominic Cooper and Garrett Hedlund.

Currently out of the running are Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Fassbender and Kellan Lutz.

Jeremy Renner cast in The Bourne Legacy

by Liam on April 22, 2011

Jeremy Renner After considering actors such as Joel Edgerton, Tobey Maguire, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Taylor Kitsch, Benjamin Walker and Kellan Lutz Universal Pictures has formally offered Jeremy Renner the lead role in The Bourne Legacy.

Latino Review actually got word of Renner’s offer on April 1st (not a good day for getting scoops), and now Deadline has confirmed Renner is expected to sign on for the role.

Renner, who received two Oscar nominations in the last two years for The Hurt Locker and The Town, is already familiar with the spy genre having already completed filming Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which is due for release in December. There was speculation that Paramount hired Renner so he could take over from Tom Cruise in future films, but it’s unlikely he’ll be able to lead two spy franchises at once.

Renner recently worked on Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters with Gemma Arterton and will play Hawkeye in The Avengers when cameras roll next month.

Last year director Tony Gilroy (Duplicity, Michael Clayton, writer of previous Bourne films) explained what The Bourne Legacy was actually about and insisted it won’t prevent Matt Damon from returning in the future.

“It’s a completely original screenplay.” Secondly, “This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter…this is a stand-alone project.

“The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal,” Gilroy says. “Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy…the world we’re making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne’s return [down the road].

Universal is targeting an August 2012 release for The Bourne Legacy with filming expected to begin in September. What do you think of Renner being the new face of the Bourne franchise?
