SECRET IDENTITY: Casting General Zod In Zack Snyder’s ‘Superman’

Published on: 5th October, 2010

General Zod“Superman” reboot director Zack Snyder has a lot of work ahead of him as he prepares to launch into the Man of Steel’s next cinematic voyage. Specifically, there’s casting to consider — who should star as the Last Son of Krypton in the “Watchmen” director’s forthcoming reboot?

But that’s not the only piece of casting to consider; in addition to Metropolis regulars like Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, Snyder also has to find the right actor to play his villian, rumored to be General Zod, the “Superman II” antagonist played by Terence Stamp.

So, who should play General Zod? As is the Secret Identity custom, we have a few picks in mind.

Jude LawJude Law
The Oscar-nominated actor has been linked to Zod in the past, and it’s not hard to understand why, as Law shares a striking resemblance to Stamp’s youthful portrayal of the Kryptonian extremist.

Law is not only an accomplished actor in various genres, he’s also a comic book enthusiast and a noted fan of “Watchmen,” making his potential partnership with Snyder a match made in comic book heaven.

Michael FassbenderMichael Fassbender
Since playing Stelios in Snyder’s “300,” Michael Fassbender has come a long way with roles in “Inglourious Basterds,” “Centurion” and “Jonah Hex.”

An expert at playing malicious menaces, Fassbender would make for a fabulous Zod. The only rub — he’s already fulfilling his comic book bad guy requirements as Magneto in “X-Men: First Class.” Does he have room on his plate for two comic roles? Ryan Reynolds would probably say yes!

Patrick WilsonPatrick Wilson
Another Snyder veteran, the former Nite Owl has the face and spirit of a good guy… which is exactly why it’s so fun to watch him go bad.

Patrick Wilson was an excellent, if ineffective, villain in “The A-Team,” but with the extra firepower that comes with Kryptonian heritage, he could do some real damage in a one-on-one battle against Snyder’s Superman.

Tom Hardy
After his performance in “Inception,” it’s clear that Tom Hardy can play devious rogues with little difficulty, but it’s his chilling turn in “Bronson” that cements his ability to play a ruthless villain like Zod.

Already mentioned as a solid pick for Brainiac in a previous Secret Identity column — a choice that I stand by — Hardy could do equally well as General Zod.

Terence StampTerence Stamp
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Terence Stamp is General Zod, and as long as the man is still alive and kicking, I don’t see why he can’t return to the role. Sure, Zod would have to be in his twilight years for Snyder’s “Superman,” but maybe that’s for the best — give him a cameo role and shine the spotlight on a different villain like Brainiac or Metallo.

To modify the famous words of Internet celebrity Chris Crocker, perhaps it’s simply best to leave Zod alone.

Tell us who you would like to see as Zod in the comments and on Twitter!

If not Michael, then Jude Law would be great, or an unknown.

Movie News

Biggest news of the moment really has to be the announcement that 300 and Watchmen director Zack Snyder has signed on to direct Superman: Man of Steel. A film produced by the legend that is Christopher Nolan from a script by the go to comic book guy David Goyer (he wrote Blade and Batman Begins). Out went the likes of Ben Affleck, Darren Aronofsky and Duncan Jones and in came Snyder; Snyder already has a solid working relationship with Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures the studios behind the project after directing Watchmen and the forthcoming Sucker Punch. The film is likely to be released in time for summer 2012 and has to be in production in 2011 before the rights lapse and turn over to the heirs of Superman’s creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Frankly, this is awesome news, Snyder is a fantastic director and can really handle a huge epic special effects driven film. But did you honestly expect Chris Nolan to hire a ropey director? Of course not.

If you thought that was the only Superman: Man of Steel related piece of news then I’m afraid you are mistaken because straight from The Hollywood Reporter comes news of Superman’s adversary in Man of Steel… Wait for it… It’s only going to be General Zod. You may remember Zod from Superman II, he was played by Terence Stamp, but who do you think is ready to take his place? Personally, if they were going to base it on who resembles Stamp, I would have to go for Jude Law. But if they were going to go all out bad ass I would love to see Michael Fassbender pull on the shiny black jumpsuit. But with Villainy commitments already to 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: First Class would he do double duty? But this is early days and this is only my opinion.

Finally from the news surrounding Man of Steel, the LA Times Hero Complex caught up with Snyder and he had this to say “I think he is viable, yes,” Snyder said.”He endures. We all want to know, ‘How will he come to us now?’ He is the biggest and baddest of them all. The greatest of them all, right? We all want to know how the next chapter takes shape. I want to know how it will take shape.” Well one way for it to really take shape is to re-hire Brandon Routh; he is Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman through and through. He was the best thing in Superman Returns by a mile. Please Zack and Chris, give him the job.

Jon Hamm Confirms He’s Been Aged Out of Being ‘Superman’

via /Film by Germain Lussier on 1/17/11

The instant it was announced that Zack Snyder would be directing a new Superman film, fans everywhere started screaming for Jon Hamm. The award-winning Mad Men actor certainly looks the part, plus he’d been working with Snyder on his latest film Sucker Punch. But though it initially seemed Snyder was looking for someone middle-aged, eventually it was revealed that Hamm, who’ll be 40 in March, was too old for the role.

In a recent interview with MTV, Hamm commented on this, confirming he’d talked to Snyder about it in passing but has been aged out of the roll, calling it a “young man’s game.” See video of the comment and do a little speculating after the jump.

Thanks to MTV for asking Hamm point blank. Here’s what he had to say.

So where does that leave the casting of Superman? Snyder’s Sucker Punch will be released in two months so chances are he’ll have to have more information when he starts doing press for that. Star of The Social Network Armie Hammer has inquired about the role but recently he was on Sirius XM’s Opie and Anthony show and admitted he didn’t think he was going to get it. Matthew Goode, who worked with Snyder on Watchmen, has also been rumored to be in contention to don the tights.

At the end of the day, here’s what it comes down to. I trust Zack Snyder. He’s never been one to make easy casting decisions but with his last two live-action films, he’s basically taken good actors and made them stars. Gerald Butler and Michael Fassbender in 300 as well as Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Jackie Earle Haley in Watchmen come to mind. Though they were known, even award-nominated, none of those guys were really considered stars before they worked with Snyder. Say what you want about his ability to direct, but the guy can definitely cast.

Who is your dream Superman? Does seeing Hamm talk about the role kind of make you wish he would have gotten it?

* Joe Manganiello will likely be cast as the new Superman: good choice?

* 28 Jan 2011

Some of you ladies are big fans of Joe Manganiello. To me, he seems like dumb, interchangeable beefcake, and a dude who wears his shirts (blouses) much too tight. But I “get” why he’s appealing – he’s pretty, he seems nice, and he doesn’t seem too complicated. Michael Fassbender would be complicated – you would crush on him for a long time, and then finally he would invite you to dinner, and then he would screw you and write poetry for you and break your heart, and you would never be able to love again. Joe Manganiello is the dude you meet at a bar who smells like beer and Axe Body Spray, and when you get drunk enough, you fool around with him in the bathroom because you don’t even want to take him home with you. Just my thoughts.

Anyway, Joe is rumored to be taking over the most neutered of all superheroes, Superman. Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder have been searching for an actor for a long time to take over the cape, and they think they’ve found their Clack Kent in Joe.

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… a werewolf? As ‘Batman’ chief Christopher Nolan and ‘The 300′ director Zack Snyder look to produce a series reboot for the ‘Superman’ franchise, his team is looking for a new Man of Steel — and they may have one in ‘True Blood’ star Joe Manganiello.

Manganiello, who plays a werewolf on the show, is the hot name to play Superman in the film, according to the LA Times.

The actor spoke to Extra, saying, “It’s out there in the ether, we’ll see. I would be honored, I love Zack Snyder, I love Christopher Nolan, I’m a huge fan of both of them.”

He already has some experience with superhero films, having played Flash Thompson in the ‘Spiderman’ films.

Previously, Jon Hamm had been thought to be under consideration for the role, but said at the Golden Globes that he was too old for the part.

Manganiello is at least one person’s Superman: he got engaged to actress/model Audra Marie in September.

[From The Huffington Post]

Yes, I’ve heard that The Hamm was being “considered” as was Matt Bomer, best known as Neal from White Collar. Although I love both Hamm and Bomer, both of them would have sucked as Superman. Superman isn’t angst-y and deep like The Hamm. Nor is he too pretty for words and able to wear the hell out of a suit, like Bomer. No, I have to admit, Joe is the right actor for Clark Kent/Superman. Beefcake, good body, vague. Incapable of angst. Good pick!
