‘Haywire’ Promo Posters Tease Arthouse Action From Steven Soderbergh

Posted on Friday, May 6th, 2011 by Russ Fischer

Steven Soderbergh has two big pictures coming down the pipe for 2011: Contagion, which he recently finished shooting, and Haywire, the thriller in which MMA fighter Gina Carano makes her big acting debut as a double-crossed black ops soldier who is out for revenge. We haven’t seen very much at all from Haywire, despite the fact that the film is finished and test-screening, but now there are some great concept posters floating around.

These aren’t likely to be final — more than likely when the movie actually hits theaters the one-sheet art will foreground much of the strong supporting cast. (Like Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas and Antonio Banderas.) So take a look at this art now — there are some excellent images here.

The art is evidently by Neil Kellerhouse, who also designed the poster for The Girlfriend Experience. These sheets foreground Gina Carano, but not in the obvious way. (Hell, many of them look like they could be Warp Records single covers.) That one where she’s standing behind a broken door is magnificent, as is the image where she’s fighting Michael Fassbender on a bed. And the hand-scrawled one reminds me of the promo imagery for Olivier Assayas’ film, Irma Vep.

This film was written by Lem Dobbs, who also wrote The Limey for Steven Soderbergh. That film was a big Point Blank homage in some ways, and I get a similar vibe from these posters, too — if this is even vaguely a spiritual successor to The Limey/Point Blank I’ll be thrilled. There’s no solid release date yet for Haywire, but we’ll keep you posted.

Promo Art For Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Haywire’ Features a Ruthless Gina Carano
Published on May 6, 2011 by Jordan Raup · View Comments

What’s exactly going on with Steven Soderbergh‘s gritty action thriller Haywire? After a rumored April release has come and gone, the film now eyes a late summer release, but one would think we’d have seen a trailer, announcement, or simply an official photo. Soderbergh has said he had a little extra cash, so he went back and did some work on the film written by Lem Dobbs (The Limey). Now we have a little something.

A fansite (via The Playlist) dedicated to the star of the film, MMA Fighter Gina Carano, has posted some new promo art from The Girlfriend Experience poster designer Neil Kellerhouse. It is indeed pretty nice and even features a peek at Michael Fassbender. Check it out below for the film about “a black ops super soldier seeking payback after she is betrayed and set up during a mission.” Haywire also stars Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton, Michael Angarano, Matthieu Kassovitz and Antonio Banderas.

Impressive Promo Art for Steven Soderbergh’s HAYWIRE Starring Gina Carano
by Matt Goldberg Posted:May 6th, 2011 at 6:25 am

Director Steven Soderbergh is setting up audiences for a one-two punch this year with the action film Haywire and the epidemic drama Contagion. While Contagion will likely receive more attention due to its A-list cast (Damon, Paltrow, Winslet, Cotillard, and Law), Haywire is no slouch either. The film stars Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton, and in the lead role, MMA fighter Gina Carano as a spy who is double-crossed on a mission and comes home to protect her family and get revenge.

The aptly name Gina Carano fan site, “Gina Carano Fan Site” has come across some promo art for the film done by artist Neil Kellerhouse and it’s the kind of eye-catching work you will never see on a real poster because it doesn’t use floating heads or the standard blue-orange template. No official materials have been released, but I highly encourage the studio behind the film to use the poster where Carano is running across the title. Hit the jump to check out the promo art. Haywire currently doesn’t have a release date, but it’s looking to hit theaters in August.

Intense Promo Art For ‘Haywire’ Lands A Solid Punch

A crop of some pretty amazing concept posters and other art from Steven Soderbergh‘s forthcoming “Haywire” has hit and they’re pretty damn great. Featuring an all-star cast including Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton, Michael Angarano, Matthieu Kassovitz and Antonio Banderas, the picture is a gritty spy thriller written by Lem Dobbs (”The Limey”) and stars MMA fighter Gina Carano as a black ops soldier on a mission of revenge after she’s double crossed by one of her teammates. And while we have yet to see the film, the artwork at least points to something a bit more artful than your standard actioner like say, “Colombiana.”

The Gina Carano fansite where these all cropped up suggests that this looks to be the work of designer Neil Kellerhouse and that’s not a bad guess at all as we were told last year he would be doing work on the film (he also designed the poster for “The Girlfriend Experience”).

Though not yet firmly set, we’ve been told the film is now eyeing an August date (Soderbergh recently corroborated by saying the film comes out “this summer”), marking the first of two punches from Soderbergh this year, with his virus thriller “Contagion” coming in October. Check out the pics below.

Haywire

We've yet to see trailers or even a poster for Steven Soderbergh's action thriller Haywire (formerly known as Knockout). However, some cool promo art that may or not be predecessors to official posters have just surfaced and they're pretty damn great. The film stars MMA fighter Gina Carano in her first feature film and these pieces of promo art showed up at one of her fansites (via The Playlist). They're pretty unique, and while it'd be great to see a couple of them in theaters, only one seems like a viable option as it highlights the cast including Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas and many more. See below!

Here's the cool promo art which The Playlist brought to our attention:

Incredible Promo Art by Neil Kellerhouse emerges for Soderbergh's 'Haywire'

by Ryland Aldrich, May 6, 2011 7:43 PM

You probably remember artist Neil Kellerhouse from his jaw-droppingly gorgeous poster for Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience. He is also the man responsible for the memorable posters for The Social Network and I'm Still Here. Well the World Wide Web was taken by storm this morning when a series of gorgeous images emerged attributed to him for Soderbergh's upcoming film Haywire.

The film, rumored to hit theaters this August (ahead of his likely October release of Contagion), stars MMA fighter GIna Carano as a super spy alongside a great ensemble cast lead by Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, and more. Hopes are high for the film with a script penned by Lem Dobbs who wrote Soderbergh's The Limey and co-wrote the Alex Proyas classic Dark City. With artwork this good, the film has a lot to live up to.

Haywire – August 2011
Starring: Gina Carano, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton, Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Michael Angarano
Directed by: Steven Soderbergh (all the Ocean’s # movies, The Informant!)
Written by: Lem Dobbs (The Score)

“A black ops super soldier seeks payback after she is betrayed and set up during a mission.” – IMDB

My thoughts: There isn’t a ton of information available about this film and the casting is…kind of crazy and confusing but ultimately awesome. I’m a mega-feminist so I love any opportunity to see a movie about a female kicking ass. The fact that Carano is an MMA fighter helps. She’ll probably do most of her own stunts and will actually fit the role (I’m looking at you Angeline Jolie). There hasn’t been a trailer released, but Soderbergh just released some art for the movie which I’ll gladly share with you.

First Official Still Image from Steven Soderbergh's Haywire
Posted 07.03.11 by BrentJS

We got our first look at mixed martial artist-turned-actress Gina Carano as the lead character in Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh's (Erin Brockovich) new spy thriller, Haywire (formerly Knockout), several months ago, thanks to some leaked photos from the set showing the Muay Thai-trained Carano laying into co-star Ewan McGregor. Now, the first official still image from the movie has finally been released and it shows that Carano is just as adept at handling firearms as she is at manhandling former Jedis.

Haywire was written by Lem Dobbs (The Limey). The story revolves around Mallory Kane (Carano), a freelance covert operative who is betrayed on a mission in Barcelona and must fight her way back to the States to protect her family and track down those who double-crossed her (think The Bourne Identity with estrogen and no memory loss). The cast includes Michael Douglas, Bill Paxton, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Michael Angarano and Antonio Banderas.
Next Showing: Haywire opens Jan. 20, 2012

SDCC11: Teaser Poster and Stills from Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Haywire’

by Nat Almirall, Jul 22 2011
With Soderbergh announcing his plans to retire from directing, fans and admirers of his commercial and personal projects alike should savor his recent offerings all the more.

The latest, Haywire, features mixed martial-arts star Gina Carano as a highly skilled operative for a state security contractor, “in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world” (my kitchen after chili-night Thursdays). After a successful rescue mission, she’s double-crossed by someone in her agency and made the target of several nasty-sounding assassins. As she struggles to uncover the truth and stay alive, “she devises an ingenious–and dangerous–trap,” and that’s where the haywire comes in.

Joining Carano is a cast that rivals Soderbergh’s Ocean’s 11 films, including Channing Tatum (GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra), Ewan McGregor (the Star Wars prequels), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Antonio Banderas (The Legend of Zorro), Bill Paxton (Big Love), Michael Douglas (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), and Michael Angarano (Almost Famous).

We’ve got stills and the teaser poster for you under the fold.

New Photos From Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire

Written by: Christopher Smith

New photos from Steven Soderbergh‘s Haywire have been released. They consist of two quick action shots that give us a glimpse of MMA star Gina Carano and actor Channing Tatum. The film follows Carano’s character, Mallory Kanye. Kane is a clandestine super operative seeking payback after she has been set up and betrayed by her former company.

Haywire looks to be an intense action thriller with a very strong cast. While Carano and Tatum may lead, they are backed by names like Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas, among others. With Soderbergh behind the camera for this action pic, I think it’d be safe to assume this one will turn out fine. The director proved to us that he can make exciting thrillers with the Ocean 11 movies and hopefully he’ll bring that same excitement to Haywire.

Haywire will open in theaters on January 20, 2012. Check out the full plot summary below.

Mallory Kane is a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who know her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive.

Using her black-ops military training, she devises an ingenious—and dangerous—trap. But when things go haywire, Mallory realizes she’ll be killed in the blink of an eye unless she finds a way to turn the tables on her ruthless adversary.

New Teaser Poster for Steven Soderbergh's 'Haywire' with Gina Carano

Haywire

A few of you may remember we featured a set of stylish, artistic posters for Steven Soderbergh's action flick Haywire back in May, but had to pull them down. We finally have the first official teaser poster and it's definitely artistic, but not as good as the others. This is apparently just a Comic-Con-specific teaser poster in connection with their big presentation later today. Gina Carano stars in the movie as a "black ops super soldier" and she's going to kick some serious ass. Early word on the Haywire action is great, just look at Edgar Wright's tweet: "[Saw] an extended fight scene from Haywire... I'll call it. Best Fight Scene of 2012."

Haywire Poster

Haywire is directed by Oscar winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, following up The Informant and The Girlfriend Experience, from a script by Lem Dobbs, of Soderbergh's The Limey, as well as Dark City and Kafka. In Haywire, an electrifying tale of espionage and betrayal, a female covert ops specialist (Carano), who works in the deadly world of international operatives, strikes back after discovering she's been double-crossed by someone in the agency. The cast includes Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton. Relativity is releasing Haywire on January 20, 2012.

Exclusive: Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Haywire’ Teaser Poster Debuts & We Talk To Designer Neil Kellerhouse

With only five films left to go before self-imposed retirement, each of Steven Soderbergh‘s remaining projects promises to bring at the very least, a super interesting twist on several genres the director has yet to fully tackle (”Liberace” likely being part musical, etc.).

Though his next film scheduled to be released is September’s outbreak thriller/horror “Contagion,” he’s already got another film in the can, the Bourne-like spy actioner “Haywire.” The film stars MMA fighter Gina Carano as a covert ops specialist who discovers she’s been double-crossed and takes revenge on her own company. An impressive ensemble of Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton, Michael Douglas and Michael Angarano have been rounded up for the film that reunites the director with ”The Limey” screenwriter Lem Dobbs and composer David Holmes (the ‘Oceans’ Trilogy, “Out of Sight”). With the planned release date of January 20, 2012 coming up in about five months, the marketing campaign for the film is heating up and will truly get started with a panel this weekend at Comic-Con, where Soderbergh and Carano will be presenting the first footage from the picture.

Additionally, they’ve released the first official poster for the film that they’ll be bringing along to San Diego, and you can get a peek at it below. It’s another beauty from designer Neil Kellerhouse who has previously worked with Soderbergh on posters for “The Girlfriend Experience,” “The Informant!” and his Spalding Gray doc “And Everything Is Going Fine,” among others. You may also recognize his already iconic “The Social Network” art, his recent striking piece for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” or his many covers for The Criterion Collection. We got a chance to speak to the graphic artist about the inspiration for his latest one-sheet, what it’s like to work with Soderbergh and a details on a few of his other projects as well. Read on for his thoughts on “Haywire” and look out for a more in-depth interview with Kellerhouse a bit later.

“In advertising I don’t think you can be disingenuous at all. You have to be really honest and up front and be true to the story,” Kellerhouse said about his approach to creating a strong impression with a poster. The designer was doing work for the Criterion Collection when Soderbergh first called him directly and asked him to work on the key art for “Bubble.” For their next project, “The Girlfriend Experience,” Kellerhouse estimates he produced around 40 or 50 pieces before they settled on the final artwork and the two have become mutual admirers and collaborators on the artwork for several films since. He says Soderbergh doesn’t give him much direction up front nor does he art direct the concepts heavily after they’re presented, instead he lets Kellerhouse explore a number of ideas before deciding on a direction that he’s happy with. “He’s sharp, he knows what he likes, he’s got great taste and an amazing visual sensibility,” he said of the director.

While sometimes Kellerhouse will only have the script and some production stills to go on, in certain cases he’s able to look at the nearly-completed film, which was the case for “Haywire.” Kellerhouse described the film, which was shot all over the world, as “hypertopical” and “transportive” and used that as inspiration for his artwork. He worked on numerous pieces for this film as well and described this first poster as being “day glow” and “cautionary.” “[The film] feels so forward and modern that I wanted to get something that feels modern and takes you to another place like the film,” he said. He also confirmed he was working on the final poster art as well, which he described as “the payoff” and said though the first poster wasn’t necessarily a new visual language, the final poster would be much more “adventurous.” “It needed [to be] like something you’ve never seen before,” he added. You can check out the Comic-Con poster below and look out for a lot more from our chat with Kellerhouse very soon.

Fandango, who delivers the poster, also has a quote from the director himself.

“When we were working on BUBBLE, I wanted to make sure we came up with a one-sheet that was…well, as odd as the movie. Or as ‘distinctive.’ Whatever. So I was looking at some of the Criterion Collection dvds which had really striking artwork, and I called Kim Hendrickson and asked who did the design for the titles I thought were particularly cool. She said, oh, those were done by Neil Kellerhouse. So Neil did BUBBLE for us, then THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE and THE INFORMANT!, and in the mean time I turned him on to David Fincher, and Neil did THE SOCIAL NETWORK and is now working on DRAGON TATTOO, in addition to working on HAYWIRE and CONTAGION. Busy guy. The only problem with Neil is that he generates too much good stuff; the images that end up being discarded are often every bit as good as the final choice. Repeatedly I’ve begged the distributor to come up with a way to post Neil’s ‘kills’ online as a way of rewarding fans of the films and creating chatter and buzz and s$#!. They’ve always said, yeah, yeah, that would be cool, but they’ve never done it. And they won’t unless a lot of you ask them to. So get involved if you want to see more cool stuff from Neil. But until then, check out this teaser for HAYWIRE…”

New Photos: Channing Tatum & Gina Carano In Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Haywire’

Following the first official look at star Gina Carano firing a machine gun in Steven Soderbergh‘s long-awaited spy thriller “Haywire,” two new images from the film have now arrived featuring the MMA star in action alongside co-star Channing Tatum.

The duo lead a star-studded cast which includes Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton, Michael Douglas and Michael Angarano for what promises to be a taut actioner that will follow Carano’s covert ops specialist as she discovers she’s been double-crossed and aims to take revenge on her own company. The film was written by Lem Dobbs (”The Limey”) with Soderbergh regular David Holmes (the ‘Oceans’ trilogy, “Out of Sight”) returning to write the score.

Interestingly, after announcing that she would return to MMA fighting after completing the pic, Carano was mysteriously pulled from a comeback bout on June 18th for what are still unknown reasons. Her first return in the public eye since then? The glamour that is Comic-Con, which begins this week. Here’s a lengthier synopsis for the flick:

After a complicated road to distribution, “Haywire” hits theaters January 20th next year.

New Images from Haywire + Your Michael Fassbender Fix on the Side!
November 19th, 2011 at 8:30 am by Sheri

UK Trailer for Steven Soderbergh's Haywire!

Rise and shine my little junkies! It’s Saturday morning and time for your Daily Fassbender! First we have some shiny new images from Steven Soderbergh’s cinematic version of Redbull and Vodka, Haywire, starring MMA fighter Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum-tot, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas and Michael Fassbender. At least Fassy only gets his ass handed to him by Carano’s Mallory in one of these stills.

There’s the official synopsis for Haywire, just in case you missed it: This dynamic action-thriller …introduces mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Gina Carano as Mallory Kane, in a demanding lead role that has her performing her own high-adrenaline stunts.

Yeah baby! I can’t wait. Haywire opens January 20 in the US, Canada and the UK.

Now, back to Michael Fassbender…

Remember we told you he was GQ Magazine’s “Breakout Man of the Year”? Well, Thursday night in LA, the mag threw a party for all of the honorees at that den of iniquity, the Chateau Marmont. So naturally, the man of the moment made an appearance and we have some pics. Not sure what he’s doing with Rose McGowan (and whatever it is, I’m not sure I like it), but I love the cigar.

I realize it seems like I’m cheating on my other boyfriend *coughGerardButlercough* but I’m really not. Fassy’s had a piece of my heart since ’07 and 2011 is his year. Attention must be paid.

Enjoy the pics!
