FIVE – Centurion (dir. Neil Marshall) – Aug 27th
I know this is probably one of those that I’ll hate my theatre for because they won’t bring it out I’m sure but I’m still psyched for it. I’m a huge fan of Michael Fassbender after seeing him in films like Hunger, Inglorious Basterds and Fish Tank I’ll watch anything he’s in. Let’s hope he smacks a bitch in this one too.

Michael Fassbender will fast become a star going off his performances in this and things like Inglourious Basterds. He really is the star of the film and its central heart. His performance is more subtle than most of the others, shows more emotion and he has a confidence that carries the film. Certainly leading man material.

Michael Fassbender gives a wonderful performance as centurion Quintus Dias, thrust by fate into the unenviable task of leading his fellow soldiers back to safety.

Protagonist Michael Fassbender is always sensational, even if he does not get to do much.
Neil Marshall has looked well at Russel Crowe in Gladiator, and saw in Michael Fassbender an aristocratic but human titular centurion

This is the first time the audience gets to see Michael Fassbender giving life to a character that puts his acting skills to the maximum usage. The character he plays in the movie is a challenging one that requires amounts and amounts of hard work put in to it. The movie sees him playing the role of a lone warrior with the utmost ease and grandeur. The way he brings out the emotions in the movie is a thing to marvel at because it gives him the edge that is necessary for a serious bit of acting. It is a commendable out put that is given by him.

Leading this small squad of survivors is Quintus Dias (Michael Fassbender). Fassbender himself – who’s recently been turning out brilliant performance after brilliant performance – has the film pretty much rest on his shoulders. Unsurprisingly, he’s as solid as you’d expect him to be.

The first highlight in the film is the casting. Marshall has assembled a magnificent cast, led by the great Fassbender. The Irish actor has been on a great run during the last few years, delivering stellar work in Inglourious Basterds, Hunger and Fish Tank. He is clearly an actor to keep an eye on, and in Centurion he delivers a strong and charismatic performance.

I'm not sure if its is because of 'Inglorious Basterds' that we are seeing more films with Michael Fassbender or I notice him more. He is an excellent actor and caries this film really well. I'm sure we'll see him as the leading man more often now.

Michael Fassbender is about to be something. He's a great actor and he seems to be in that part of his career where the studios are trying to see where he fits best. He played a thumbnail sketch of Errol Flynn in Inglourious Basterds, was fantastic in Hunger a couple years ago, and passed the time in Jonah Hex, a more difficult accomplishment than it might sound. He will be seen next summer as Magneto before he's Magneto in the X-Men prequel, which might be the one that unlocks the door.
You can see, even with very little of consequence to say and an unwaveringly narrow course of action to undertake, how much Fassbender invests in his character. Movie stars should watch this guy, both because he's a prime example of how to work even when you're supporting average stuff and because he'll be breathing down their necks sooner than later.

Rising star Michael Fassbender gives an incredible performance as Centurion Quintus Dias. He makes you care for his character almost instantly and although Hunger gave him more to work with, he does a great job with the material he has here.

And he gives the great Fassbender a chance to flex his sensitive yet still ruthless sword ’n’ sandal muscles. Quintus is the kind of guy you’d unquestioningly follow to hell and back—and what hell his band of macho men must face after their legion is nearly destroyed by the savage Pict tribe and they attempt to return to Rome.

The movie finds time for a quasi-love story, although its inclusion seems a little forced. Still, it works within its context by providing a plausible reason for the pace to briefly slow. One could argue there's a lesson here about tolerance and trust, but that might be looking too deeply into things. What it unquestionably illustrates, however, is the chemistry between Michael Fassbender and Imogen Poots (who plays an exiled Pict "witch") - these two will be reunited in a new adaptation of Jayne Eyre. In fact, Fassbender is a hot property these days. Not too long ago, he was appearing in small indie productions like Fish Tank. Soon, he'll be Magneto in the next X-Men movie, X-Men: First Class. He's a convincing hero, substituting decency and honor for the uncouth braggadocio of Dominic West, whose portrayal of General Virilus is scene-stealing.

There are ambushes, flaming arrows and huge rolling fireballs bringing death and disaster, but none of the arena fights or massive fields of combat that usually come with Roman epics. Instead the filmmaker counts on a handful of rich characters to carry the day, with Quintus at the core. Fassbender is a chameleon of an actor who suffuses his leading men with great character traits. As Quintus, he plays broad in the big scenes and is movingly specific in the small ones — an outsider who never aimed to lead, yet picking up the mantle when it's called for, he's the kind of hero we look for in movies like this.

"Centurion" brings him together with Irish actor Michael Fassbender (of "Hunger" and "Fish Tank"), a tremendously good-looking rogue who's going to become a huge star if his intelligence and good taste don't get in the way. Fassbender fills the Crowe-Gibson role here as Quintus Dias, a Roman centurion who leads a small group of comrades deep into the Scottish wilderness after their legion has been ambushed and shredded by a band of bloodthirsty Pictish barbarians.

Fassbender gives a strong and believable performance as a man trying to hold onto some sense of moral intuition when his enemies have stopped making sense to him.

Michael Fassbender is the steely, resourceful leader of a Roman troupe taken apart by the marauding Picts, forced to fend for himself in a performance that’s more physical than anything else. Fassbender, a handsome, square-jawed sort, makes a fitting modern update to Cornel Wilde in “The Naked Prey,” all sinewy limbs and taut chest. As the leader of a near-supernatural cult on his trail, Olga Kurylenko is the latest in an already-impressive lineup of terrifying, vengeful females in Marshall films, her thousand-mile stare equipped with a few handy skills with weaponry.

However, Quintus appears to be an honorable man and the performance by Michael Fassbender drives home that point. Fassbender is very genuine in his portrayal of a Roman soldier who is tired of war and really just wants to go home.

Fassbender and West make for a great pair on screen, though their time together is limited. West seems to be enjoying playing roles where his character is a bit of a blowhard, but still quite efficient given the task at hand. He’s fun to watch. Fassbender is simply a fascinating actor; in the last few years he has played a demonic Nazi (“Blood Creek”), IRA hunger strike leader Bobby Sands (“Hunger”), a puffed-up, too-articulate British Lieutenant and former film critic (“Inglourious Basterds”), and a poetic, tattooed madman (the otherwise miserable “Jonah Hex”). In “Centurion” he provides some welcome dramatic heft to the proceedings, while in more serious films he is a blistering presence, and someone to watch over the coming years.

Fassbender carries the weight of the movie with his character, and the other characters are only vehicles for Quintus Dias to seem wiser, graver, and manlier. Fassbender personifies these qualities well, but protagonists are only as good as their secondary characters. The supporting cast is talented enough, and realistic.

The acting is pretty strong, all around. I haven’t seen much of Michael Fassbender before now, but I really liked him in the lead role of Quintus Dias, perhaps the most admirable character in the movie.

Michael Fassbender, who I don’t recall ever seeing in any role of significance before this, is excellent as the lead. He’s also playing Magneto in the new X-Men movie.

There is a caveat to all this: Whether intended or not, Fassbender is just so great as Quintus at a certain point he ends up taking the movie over, and while Etain (sinisterly yet seductively portrayed by Kurylenko) can't help but fascinate, my allegiance slipped the Centurion's way all the same. There is something about his emotional journey that makes him not so much a heroic figure, but one I just wanted to find something akin to happiness. After all he goes through, after all he puts on the line while many others (with two big exceptions) just continue to look out for themselves, after those he has sworn allegiance to threaten to betray him, Quintus retains both his dignity and his honor - and if those aren't qualities worthy of respect, then I'm not sure what else would be.
