Michael Fassbender is outstanding as Sands, but the cast maintains a uniform verisimilitude.

Full of beautiful camera work, intense moments, and some incredible work by Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterd’s British film critic spy)

Michael Fassbender (who also played, excellently, the movie critic in 'Basterds') is one to keep your eye on. An actor with seemingly no holes in his game, he nails the lead with conviction. Amazing work ethic in starving himself ridiculously skinny to shoot some of the tougher to watch scenes.

The acting (when highlighted) is across-the-board great. Characters who are in the film for 12 seconds show just as much range as Michael Fassbender (playing Bobby Sands). Fassbender only gets one scene of actual dialogue — every thing else is mostly screaming or wasting away with only his eyes to produce emotion. His entire performance is phenomenal though. He puts on a clinic in terms of passion displayed. Most notably during his extended scene. It’s about 20 minutes of him rationalizing his decision to strike to everyone: to God, to himself, to a priest, to his younger self. It’s profoundly affecting and (not to diminish McQueen’s work) the highlight of the film.

Much is to be said about Michael Fassbender’s performance; his near silent presence after his discussion with the priest spoke volumes through his facial expressions and body language.

The one thing that truly saves Hunger is Michael Fassbender's jaw-dropping performance. Like Emile Hirsch in Into The Wild, Fassbender lost vast amounts of body weight to take on the role, and his final moments as Bobby Sands are among the most troubling and uncomfortable that you'll see on film. It's an incredible achievement, echoing his subject's own dedication, and you can't help wishing that Fassbender had been on our screens from the start.

Criterion also released a DVD of Steve McQueen’s “Hunger,” which looks at another group of militants, this time members of the Irish Republican Army imprisoned by the British. The first part of the film looks at the constant state of war between the defiant inmates and the sadistic guards, while the second half follows a hunger striker, played by Michael Fassbender (“Inglourious Basterds”) in a raw and fearless performance. It’s amazing that a film that features such cruelty is somehow so beautifully shot.

There are performances, rare though they may be, that come in and grab you by the short and curlies. There is no denying Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood, Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, and David Thewlis in Naked. In Steve McQueen’s Hunger, Michael Fassbender gives one of those performances that you have to genuflect in awe. It’s not because for the last section of the film he drops more weight than Christian Bale did for The Machinist. That’s a great commitment, for sure, and shows a dedicated performer. But it’s a scene in the middle of the film that plays out in three shots over twenty minutes that shows the man has the gift to command - he makes it impossible to take you eyes off of him. Playing the real-life Bobby Sands, in one scene Fassbender lays out his plan for a hunger strike, and how and why he can commit to doing it.

Fassbender, after his small but awesome role in Inglourious Basterds and now this, has shot up the the top of my list of actors to look out for.

Michael Fassbender is excellent. Since he is a screen actor who is new to me. He disappears into his role making it seem more realistic.

Fassbender gives a performance that was completely overlooked during awards season; unfortunate considering the depths he went to achieve physical and emotional realism.

Third, you’ve got to see the dedicated and unnerving performance by Michael Fassbender, who, after Inglourious Basterds and Fish Tank, is fast making his name as one of the most gifted and versatile actors of his generation.

As beautiful and meticulously framed as the film is, it all would have fallen completely flat without believable acting. Fortunately great acting is in no short supply. The physicality and sheer unpleasantness which the movie demands it put its actors through is a testament to the talent of the actors for pulling it off. Given that there isn't much dialog, the actors had to show great subtlety resulting in powerful performances, led by Michael Fassbender. His physical acting and the emotional range he can show without uttering a word was stunning. There was nothing easy about the acting in this film. This point is no more evident than in the 17 minute, uncut, all dialog conversation which carries pivotal information about the motivation of the strikers. Without this scene being delivered perfectly by Liam Cunningham and Michael Fassbender, the movie would lose its purpose.

I don’t want to come down on this movie too hard, because it did have a lot going for it, especially in the performance of Michael Fassbender, an actor that just has “it”. I have not seen much of his work, but count me in as one of the first (and you will hear this again) to say, one of the best actors of his generation. It’s not just the starving himself that was impressive, (although lets not pretend that isn’t) it was the dedication and determination you read in his face. Some actors have an umbilical chord that is attached directly to the camera, and they can feed us everything they want us to ingest, Fassbender is one of those actors.

The main character, who is introduced about thirty minutes into the film, is played by Michael Fassbender. People who don’t know his name are going to be learning it very soon. He’s signed on to star in a variety of projects and has multiple movies set for release. His success can be traced back primarily to his performance in Hunger (and later Fish Tank). It’s not simply that it’s a great performance. It’s a rare performance. It’s not about big dramatic moments or even when he’s starving himself to death as he begins a hunger strike.
