The hottest film tickets of the year
Centurion
One of two films about the Ninth Roman Legion, which marched north in AD120 to obliterate the Picts and was never seen again. This one stars Dominic West, Michael Fassbender and Bond girl Olga Kurylenko as a mute local warrior (does she need to talk?). Awaiting a release date is Kevin McDonald’s version of Rosemary Sutcliff’s novel The Eagle of the Ninth. May 21

Top 5 Fridays – Great Expectations
Posted by: Steve, on January 29, 2010, at 8:08 am
Coming up with a list of the 5 films I’m most looking forward to for 2010 turned out to be a little harder than I thought… cause there’s so many to choose from. Buoyed by a very successful year at the box office, and by figuring out that a film doesn’t have to be mass market schlock to be successful, Hollywood has cranked up the awesome factor for this year. Below you’ll find the cream of the crop from what was a series of agonising decisions about which movies get me more excited. Get out your bibs, ’cause it’s time to start drooling!
4. Centurion(release date TBC) – I hadn’t even heard about this movie until a few days ago, but as a huge fan of Neil Marshall, I am so psyched to see how this plays out. It’s supposed to tell the story of the legendary 9thLegion, back in the last days of the Roman Empire, who cross Hadrian’s Wall into Scotland to do battle with the Picts (the barbarians behind the crazy face paint William Wallace and his cronies were wearing in Braveheart). For those unfamiliar with Neil Marshall, he directed cult favourites The Descent and Doomsday, and will now be working with Dominic West (The Wire’s Jimmy McNulty) and Michael Fassbender (Archie Hicox from Inglourious Basterds). Should be a great opportunity for some visceral swordplay and bloodshed, as well as some top notch acting from two actors right on the cusp of greatness.

Antici---pation: Upcoming Movies to Be Excited About
I used to do a regular feature on here where I'd highlight a few of the films coming out that I was personally anticipating very, very much. I've decided to try again to bring you this column, and hope that the YouTube vids I put on here hold out a bit longer. I know, I should just download and post them myself, but whatever. Embedding is easier and I'm lazy. Today, some (somewhat) historically-based movies that I think should be a blast, or that I hope are in any case.
1) CENTURION
Writer/Director Neil Marshall's (THE DESCENT) follow-up to DOOMSDAY tells a fictionalized account of the struggle between the Roman Empire's Ninth Legion and the ancient Picts in Britain, circa 117 AD. This looks pretty hot. I am a fan of Marshall's stuff, and I'm finally stoked to see a historical action film that doesn't feature (at least not from the trailer) a ton of slo-mo and 300 cribbing. The cast is stellar: Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, and Olga Kurylenko. If the battle showcased in the trailer, where the legion is ambushed, is anything like the historical Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, it will be amazing. I choose this over Ridley Scott's ROBIN HOOD any day.

Filmstalker's Most Anticipated of 2010
I've been sitting on the list of upcoming films for the year for some time now, I did complete it but I never managed to publish it, until now. Here's the list of films that Filmstalker (that's me) recommends that you should watch this year, and it's a bumper of a list. It's not complete either, but it's everything that has a UK or US release date, with a few that are still waiting for a date.
All in all it's a pretty comprehensive list, so sit back, scroll through it, and enjoy. Frankly I'm glad it's over, there's a hell of a lot of work gone into it.
Have I missed anything? Any films you think need to be on here?
Centurion
23rd April UK
I'm so hopeful that Neil Marshall can come back from Doomsday and deliver a strong film, and Centurion sounds like it could be, a dramatisation of the story of the last Roman soldiers to enter Scotland before leaving the country of barbarians. The story is they were never seen again, although the were either massacred or defected to the Pictish armies. There's a great cast as well including Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, Noel Clarke, David Morrissey, Ulrich Thomsen, Olga Kurylenko, and more. I'm hopeful.

The movie which could possibly be the dark horse in terms of box office and fan appreciation is “Centurion” which stars hottest-actor-of-the-moment Michael Fassbender as a member of a Roman battalion who go to do bloody battle behind enemy lines. The movie appears to be a cross between “Gladiator” and “300” without the over-the-top visual effects. With a talent like Fassbender leading the group of soldiers, “Centurion” is likely to be at least a solid action movie with at least one good performance.
