Magnet Releasing, genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today that it has acquired U.S. rights to “Centurion,” an “epic sword and sandal thrill ride” from filmmaker Neil Marshall (“The Descent”), starring Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, David Morrissey, and Olga Kurylenko.

Magnet is launching “Centurion” as the sixth entry in the second “Six Shooter Film Series,” a collection of “the most exciting contemporary worldwide action films” which has so far also included “Bronson,” “Red Cliff,” “Ong Bak 2,” “District 13: Ultimatum” and “The Warlords.” A summer 2010 theatrical release is planned.

“‘Centurion’ is a blood drenched masterpiece,” said Magnolia/Magnet SVP Tom Quinn in a statement. “Neil has made an action movie that delivers on every level, and fans are going to go wild for it. There couldn’t be a better film to wrap up the ‘Six Shooter’ series.”

Director Marshall added: “I’m incredibly happy that ‘Centurion’ has found a home of such quality and prestige, and amongst such high caliber company too! I look forward to collaborating with Tom and everyone at Magnolia on the forthcoming US release. If history is written in blood, then ‘Centurion’ is hardcore history - bloody and brutal!”

The film is set during the war between Roman soldiers and Pict tribesmen during the 2nd century Roman conquest of Britain, with Fassbender starring as Quintus Dias, Roman centurion and son of a legendary gladiator who leads a group of soldiers on a raid of a Pict camp to rescue a captured general (West). It is a Pathe Productions presentation in association with the UK Film Council of a Celador Films Production of A Film by Neil Marshall.

The deal was negotiated by Magnolia/Magnet’s Quinn with Mike Runagall of Pathe International.

Neil Marshall’s CENTURION to Stand Guard This Summer
by Christopher Gilbreth Posted:February 24th, 2010 at 3:16 pm

Neil Marshall’s Centurion has been picked up by Magnolia Pictures. The film will be distributed through Magnolia’s genre division, Magnet. Centurion will star Michael Fassbender (Inglorious Basterds), Dominic West (The Wire, 300) and Olga Kurylenko (Hitman, Quantam of Solace).

Neil Marshall has quietly been building himself an impressive action resume. While Doomsday was no earth shattering hit, both it and the Decent sported grimy cinematography and slick action sequences. Marshall knows how to craft a tense film, and his gritty style should mesh well with the given setting and plot. Whatever happened to Outpost? Now that sounded like a fun movie. Zombies swarming an oil rig? Get that one in the pipeline (pun intended) stat Neil! Hit the jump for the synopsis of Centurion.

For those just tuning in, here’s the official synopsis for Centurion

Boasting savagely violent battle scenes and an adrenaline fueled chase through the breathtaking Scottish highlands, CENTURION is set during the war between Roman soldiers and Pict tribesmen during the 2nd century Roman conquest of Britain. Michael Fassbender stars as Quintus Dias, Roman centurion and son of a legendary gladiator who leads a group of soldiers on a raid of a Pict camp to rescue a captured general (Dominic West). The son of the Pict leader is murdered during the raid, and the Romans find themselves hunted by a seemingly unstoppable group of the Pict’s most vicious and skilled warriors, led by a beautiful and deadly tracker (Olga Kurylenko), who are hell bent on revenge.

Magnolia Plans Summer Release For ‘Centurion’
Posted on 24 February 2010 by Jordan Raup in News

The trailer for Neil Marshall’s (Dog Soldiers, The Descent, Doomsday) Centurion premiered last week. The film, which stars Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, and Olga Kurylenko has been picked up by Magnolia. Variety reports they plan a summer release for the violent medieval action flick. They have a great line-up for their second Six Shooter Film Series. Centurion rounds out the list which includes Bronson, Red Cliff, Ong Bak 2, District 13: Ultimatum, and The Warlords.

Marshall’s film is set in Britain, A.D. 117. and follows Quintus Dias, the sole survivor of a Pictish raid on a Roman frontier fort, marches north with General Virilus’ legendary Ninth Legion, under orders to wipe the Picts from the face of the Earth and destroy their leader, Gorlacon.

Are you looking forward to Centurion?

Magnet Picks up Neil Marshall’s Centurion for US Release

Posted on Wednesday, February 24th, 2010 by Russ Fischer

centurion-poster-slice

Neil Marshall’s upcoming film Centurion has generated a good bit of excitement based on Marshall’s reputation and the bloody, grimy trailer released not long ago. That was an international trailer, because at the time the clips was released the film did not have US distribution. Now it has been picked up by Magnet, the genre arm of Magnolia, which will release Centurion later this year.

The film is now the sixth film in the second ‘Six-Shooter Film Series’, which has also been the label for Ong Bak 2, Bronson, Red Cliff, The Warlords and District 13: Ultimatum. The sixth film in the series has been kept a mystery, and now we know one reason: Magnet didn’t have own it yet. Indeed, the Six-Shooter series website hasn’t yet been updated with info about Centurion. The film will get a theatrical release at some point this summer. Don’t necessarily expect a huge release, though. While Magnet has put the Six-Shooter films in theatres, most of the releases have been ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ quick. That’s the reality of the niche genre marketplace these days. Keep your eyes open.

Magnolia/Magnet senior vice-president Tom Quinn calls the film “a blood-drenched masterpiece.” He adds, “Neil has made an action movie that delivers on every level, and fans are going to go wild for it. There couldn’t be a better film to wrap up the Six Shooter series.” That ‘masterpiece’ tag will be an interesting one to evaluate, but if the movie is as bloody and fun as Marshall’s Doomsday often was, most will probably be satisfied.

Screen Daily reports the pickup, and synopsizes the film as follows:

Centurion stars Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, David Morrissey and Olga Kurylenko and takes place during the second century Roman occupation of Britain. Fassbender plays a Roman centurion who leads a rescue mission into a Pict camp in Scotland that leaves the son of a tribal leader dead and sparks a murderous chase.

Neil Marshall's CENTURION Gets US Distributor
AuthorVenkman CategoryMovie Share ArticleShare Article

I'm happy to report that Neil Marshall's new film Centurion got itself a US Distributor. I knew it eventually would, the movie looks pretty damn awesome. Magnet Releasing is the lucky distributor that paid a good seven figures for the US rights.

Magnet plans on releasing the film as part of their Six Shooter Film Series, this is the sixth entry in the collection of action films which also includes Bronson, Red Cliff, Ong Bak 2, District 13: Ultimatum and The Warlords. Centurion will most likely get a summer theatrical release.

Here's a little description offered by Screendaily:

Centurion stars Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, David Morrissey and Olga Kurylenko and takes place during the second century Roman occupation of Britain. Fassbender plays a Roman centurion who leads a rescue mission into a Pict camp in Scotland that leaves the son of a tribal leader dead and sparks a murderous chase.

I really liked what I saw in the trailer for this film, and it sounds like the film is going to live up to my expectations. Magnolia/Magnet senior vice-president Tom Quinn had this to say,

Centurion is a blood-drenched masterpiece. Neil has made an action movie that delivers on every level, and fans are going to go wild for it. There couldn’t be a better film to wrap up the Six Shooter series.

This film should make a perfect fit in Magnets Six Shooter series.

Neil Marshall's 'Centurion' Gets Picked Up By Magnet For Stateside Release

The small but vocal fan base of Neil Marshall are celebrating today as the overrated director's latest offering, "Centurion," has been picked up by Magnet for a stateside release.

The film is the last entry of Magnet's second (and fairly random) "Six Shooter Film" series which is "a collection of six of the most exciting contemporary worldwide action films." The other titles in the series are "Bronson," "Red Cliff," "Ong Bak 2," "District 13: Ultimatum" and "The Warlords," and judging by those that have hit theaters already, don't hold your breath for a wide release.

Here's the official synopsis from the press release:

Boasting savagely violent battle scenes and an adrenaline fueled chase through the breathtaking Scottish highlands, "Centurion" is set during the war between Roman soldiers and Pict tribesmen during the 2nd century Roman conquest of Britain.

As you might recall, the trailer landed a couple of weeks ago and we thought it played like "Kingdom Of Heaven"-lite. Some people disagreed, but they will be able to see for themselves when the film is released this summer (or, if they're in the UK, on April 23rd) in, again, what will very likely be a small, limited release.

Magnet Releasing Bringing Neil Marshall’s Centurion to America
Centurion (2010) Movie — By Nix on February 24, 2010

Neil Marshall likes his plasma, so you can basically count on the man bringing the red stuff in his Roman legionnaires movie “Centurion”. After all, you’ve got Romans and Barbarians and swords and spears. You would have to go out of your way not to indulge in the red stuff with those elements in your movie, and Marshall has never been one to shy away as previous films like “The Descent” and “Doomsday” can attest. Now Stateside fans won’t have to wait too long to see Marshall’s “Centurion”, because Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, has announced that they’ve acquired “Centurion” for U.S. distribution.

CENTURION is set during the war between Roman soldiers and Pict tribesmen during the 2nd century Roman conquest of Britain. Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds, 300) stars as Quintus Dias, Roman centurion and son of a legendary gladiator who leads a group of soldiers on a raid of a Pict camp to rescue a captured general (The Wire’s Dominic West). The son of the Pict leader is murdered during the raid, and the Romans find themselves hunted by a seemingly unstoppable group of the Pict’s most vicious and skilled warriors, led by a beautiful and deadly tracker (Olga Kurylenko from Quantum of Solace), who are hell bent on revenge.

Starring Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, Olga Kurylenko, Noel Clarke, David Morrissey, JJ Feild, Axelle Carolyn, Riz Ahmed, Dave Legeno, Ulrich Thomsen, and directed by Neil Marshall.

The UK gets it first April 23, 2010, and Stateside fans should get it sometime in the Summer care of Magnet.

Magnet is Bringing Neil Marshall's Centurion to US Theaters

Centurion

It was announced yesterday that Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, has acquired rights to distribute Neil Marshall's Centurion in the US. The film will be the sixth in Magnet's newest Six Shooter Film Series, which originally kicked off with Ong Bak 2: The Beginning and also includes Bronson, John Woo's Red Cliff, District 13: Ultimatum, and The Warlords. Magnet is planning a limited theatrical release of Centurion this summer in US theaters. We also featured the totally awesome trailer for Centurion a few weeks back when it was originally debuted in the UK. I can't wait to see this - glad to know it'll be here soon!

"Centurion is a blood drenched masterpiece," Magnolia SVP Tom Quinn said. "Neil has made an action movie that delivers on every level, and fans are going to go wild for it. There couldn't be a better film to wrap up the Six Shooter series." Director Neil Marshall himself also adds that, "if history is written in blood, then Centurion is hardcore history - bloody and brutal!" That's all anyone needed to say to furhter convince me to see this. Centurion stars Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, David Morrissey, and Olga Kurylenko. It's an epic action adventure set in 117 AD about a group of Roman soldiers who must fight for their lives behind enemy lines after their entire legion is decimated in a devastating guerrilla attack. We'll keep you updated!

Neil Marshall's New Film 'Centurion'
Click To View the Fullsize Image/s

Geordie film director Neil Marshall is the John Carpenter of our times. Producing spare, on budget, sometimes humorous, always inventive, thoroughly effective horror movies.

His first outing ‘Dog Soldiers’ was a unusual werewolf movie starring Kevin McKidd and Sean Pertwee. Some of the special effects were a bit ropey but it was a debut possessed of unquestionable style and wit. ‘The Descent’ was a good follow up, a genuinely creepy claustrophobic potholing nightmare. His last offering, ‘Doomsday’ whilst well intentioned was ultimately misguided; muddled, miscast and an opportunity missed. So now he’s got his teeth into ‘Centurion’ will all be forgiven?

Set during the 2nd century Roman conquest of Britain ‘Centurion’ tells the mythic story of the Ninth Legion, a group of soldiers who legend has it marched into Scotland…never to be seen again (presumably massacred). This has been widely disputed by academics for many years but no matter…it’s not really meant to be historically accurate. It does however look like a good deal of brutal, bloody fun.

Michael Fassbender stars as centurion Quintus Dias, whom after his legion is ambushed and slain, leads a raid on a Pict camp in order to rescue general Virilus (Dominic West). Fassbender is an actor worth watching. He turned in an extraordinary performance as Bobby Sands in last years ‘Hunger’ and got the nod from Tarantino in Inglorious Basterds. He also starred alongside Dominic West previously in ‘300’. West may not quite share the same level of acting chops but then he is McNulty (lead character in HBO’s incendiary The Wire) so can be forgiven almost anything. Oh and there’s some ass kicking mute eye candy for the boys in the form of Bond girl Olga Kurylenko, so everyone’s happy.

The talented Scottish director and documentary filmmaker Kevin McDonald is also set to release a film later this year entitled ‘Eagle of the Ninth’ based on the popular children’s book, which deals with the same subject. It’s the cliched double bus analogy; commission one movie about Roman centurions fighting Picts, get two.

Centurion is set for release 23rd April 2010

News – Magnet Scores Neil Marshall’s “Centurion”

Posted by Dark Horizons on February 25th, 2010 at 08:41am

Magnet Releasing, genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, has acquired U.S. rights to "The Descent" helmer Neil Marshall's bloody sword-and-sandal action thriller "Centurion".

Boasting savagely violent battle scenes and an adrenaline fueled chase through the breathtaking Scottish highlands, "Centurion" is set during the war between Roman soldiers and Pict tribesmen during the 2nd century Roman conquest of Britain.

A release is planned sometime in the Summer, how wide though is unsure. The film is the first of two rival pictures dealing with events surrounding the famed lost Roman Ninth Legion. The other being Kevin MacDonald's "Eagle of the Ninth" which Focus Features is releasing late September.

"Centurion" will be the sixth and final entry in the company's second round of its 'Six Shooter Film Series'. The other five in the most recent batch were "Brosnon," "Red Cliff," "Ong Bak 2," "District 13: Ultimatum" and "Warlords".

Neil Marshall's Centurion comes to America

by: Dave Davis Feb. 25, 2010

For a while there, the medieval action flick CENTURION from Neil Marshall (THE DESCENT, DOG SOLDIERS) was languishing without US distribution.

Magnet Releasing owner Mark Cuban reached into his impossibly deep pockets to fix that problem, and now the flick is being planned for theatrical release this summer. Magnet (who describes the flick as "a blood drenched masterpiece" - sample such badassery below) is known for giving a North American home to international genre films like ONG BAK 2, RED CLIFF, BRONSON and DISTRICT 13: ULTIMATUM.

Details: Boasting savagely violent battle scenes and an adrenaline fueled chase through the breathtaking Scottish highlands, CENTURION is set during the war between Roman soldiers and Pict tribesmen during the 2nd century Roman conquest of Britain. Magnet Releasing buys Neil Marshall’s CENTURION
Rusty Gordon
by: Rusty Gordon
February 25th, 2010

Neil Marshall created a lot of deranged fun with his previous three features: DOG SOLDIERS, THE DESCENT, and DOOMSDAY. Marshall’s upcoming film CENTURION is set during the 2nd century, and is about a group Roman soldiers being hunted by dangerous tribesmen that desire revenge. I have a feeling things will get bloody, and probably awesome. And I know there is some very cool recent CENTURION related news, which you can read after the jump.

It is now known how and when we will be able to see Marshall’s CENTURION. Magnet Releasing has bought the U.S. rights to the film, and a summer release date is planned for CENTURION.

I’m very excited with the idea of being able to spend a couple of summer hours with Neil Marshall. It is a time for cinematic excitement, and Marshall is great at creating violent fun. THE DESCENT also came out during the summer and that turned out well, hopefully Neil Marshall plus another summer release will again equal a positive result.

Paper Spaceships

Centurion Gets Magnet-ized!
Film Previews, NEWSby James

I was about to go to bed until I just read the good news that Magnet just announced they were distributing the new Neil Marshall film Centurion.

The news comes from http://www.screendaily.com/news/distribution/neil-marshalls-centurion-finds-us-home-after-efm-premiere/5011288.article

We here at Paper Spaceships love Neil Marshall’s previous 3 films, which are genre nuts wet dream. Dog Soldiers, The Descent and Doomsday would be amazing if made by three separate directors, but that the same man did them all makes it even more amazing.

Part of the wonderful Six-Shooter Films series, Magnet didn’t announce this sixth film because it wasn’t official yet. So I can’t wait to see some second century Romans invading Britain type of action.

Neil Marshall’s ‘Centurion’ Snags A U.S. Distributor

by Chris Ullrich, Feb 25 2010 // 2:00 PM

In what is surely great news for fans of director Neil Marshall and those who love movies where armored gladiators kick lots of ass (I count myself in that group, btw), Magnet Releasing has acquired the U.S. rights to Marshall’s latest film Centurion. The film, which features Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds, 300), Dominic West (300, The Wire), David Morrissey (Red Riding Trilogy), and super hot Bond-girl Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) tells the story of Roman soldiers and Pict teribesmen who battle for control of Britain.

Fassbender stars as Quintus Dias, a fearsome gladiator who leads a group of soldiers on a raid to rescue a captured general (West). The son of the Pict leader is killed during the raid, and the Romans find themselves hunted by a seemingly unstoppable group of the Pict’s most vicious and skilled warriors. The group, led by a beautiful and deadly tracker (Kurylenko), are hell bent on revenge and will stop at nothing to see it done.

And yes, along the way a lot of blood is spilled and there are fight scenes galore. Sound awesome. As someone who’s a huge fan of Marshall’s work, particularly Dog Soldiers, I couldn’t be more interested in this film.

Magnet is launching Centurion as the 6th entry in the second “Six Shooter Film Series,” a collection of six worldwide action films which also includes Bronson, Red Cliff, Ong Bak 2, District 13: Ultimatum and The Warlords. A summer theatrical release for Centurion is planned. Rest assured, I’ll be there.

Magnet Picks Up Neil Marshall's CENTURION

by Kurt Halfyard, February 24, 2010 2:51 PM

Action, UK, Ireland, Australia & New Zealand
It is press release time - but it is a good one. Magnolia has picked up Neil Marshall's Centurion for their second round of "6 Shooter Series" for their genre arm, Magnet. If you recall the first series ranged from cult hit Dainipponjin to popular success Let The Right One In to the criminally underrated 'non-super' hero movie (and apparently from the likes of Defendor and Kick-Ass, much copied) Special. Expect a limited North American release of Centurion on the big screen (at least in the larger markets) at some point this summer. Sweet.

By: MrDisgusting

Fans of Dog Soldiers, The Descent and Doomsday get ready for Neil Marshall's violent period piece Centurion, which was acquired today by Magnet Releasing (Magnolia Pictures) for release this summer via their second “Six Shooter Film Series." While the film is mostly action-oriented, we'll do a little coverage here and there until we can find out just how bloody and disgusting it is. Check out some new stills below.

Neil Marshall’s CENTURION to Stand Guard This Summer
