Fassbender To Officially Bend Metal As Magneto
Posted on 25 June 2010 by Dan Mecca in News

After weeks of rumors, Michael Fassbender has officially signed on to play Erik Lehnsherr (a.k.a. Magneto) against James McAvoy‘s Charles Xavier in Matthew Vaughn‘s upcoming X-Men: First Class. [The Playlist]

The film, produced by Fox, will deal with the close friendship the two mutants had before their conflicting ideals rendered them enemies. Certainly one of the most complex, interesting relationships in the comic book canon (the two are not-so-subtly modeled after Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X), it’s reassuring to see two young talents like McAvoy and Fassbender taking on the roles. The evaporation of their friendship should make for some scene-chewing dialogue.

Many will recall that the first X-Men opened with a surprisingly powerful flashback to Lehnserr as a child being separated from his parents in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany. Assuming Vaughn and co. maintain that arc, Fassbender will have a lot to work with, just as Sir Ian McKellen did in the original trilogy.

Are you excited to see Fassbender and McAvoy face off?

Michael Fassbender to Play Magneto
Added by inferiorego on June 25, 2010

Lots of X-Men: First Class news is flying around the web recently, and most of it is casting news, and according to Showbiz411, Michael Fassbender will be playing Magneto in the upcoming film. Fassbender has appeared in the recently released Jonah Hex, Inglorious Basterds, and 300. The last time Magneto was portrayed on the big screen was back in 2006 by Sir Ian McKellen.

Showbiz411 also reported that Fassbender had to choose between roles in X-Men: First Class and the upcoming Spider-Man reboot. He'll be joining James McAvoy who will be playing his rival Professor Charles Xavier.

There's still a lot of casting rumors flying around, when it comes to this film, and while we can't say this is 100% accurate, it seems more substantial than many of the rumors, like Benjamin Walker as Beast, Rosamund Pike as Emma Frost or Moira MacTaggert, or Amber Heard as Mystique.

I've never really noticed this guy before, but I've seen a ton of stuff he's been in. At this point, though, I really don't care who they cast, just as long as the actor isn't a "big name" just so they can bring in more people. With a film like this, I'd rather see no name actors step into the role rather than have someone like Brad Pitt play Cyclops to make sure more women watch the film, and that's why I'm a little happy to hear that Michael Fassbender was cast. All I want is a good X-Men film that isn't over-saturated with non-essential characters, which is what ruined Wolverine: Origins. Just give the fans and the mass audiences a simple story with the five original X-Men and no surprises. Adding in extra characters mucks everything up.

Inglourious Basterds‘ Lt. Archie Hicox is Magneto in X-Men: First Class
by Michael Suen | 12:01 pm, June 25th, 2010

X-Men: First Class has reeled in someone exceptional: Showbiz 411 reports that Michael Fassbender, perhaps better known as the German-speaking British Lieutenant Archie Hicox from Inglourious Basterds and Spartan warrior Stēlios (You remember: “Then we will fight in the shade.”) from 300, has officially signed on to play Erik Lensherr a.k.a. the mutant supervillain Magneto in Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming origin film story.

Fassbender’s presence was already a welcome sight in those two films, but if you’ve seen his performance in the 2008 Irish film Hunger, in which he plays IRA hunger strike leader Bobby Sands, you’ll know just how good he is, and what exciting news this is for the X-Men film.

The cast now features Fassbender, James McAvoy as Charles Xavier a.k.a. Professor X, and Broadway actor Benjamin Walker as Dr. Hank McCoy a.k.a. Beast. It’s an impressive trio to have on board, considering the movie’s dubious concept of depicting the X-Men as young’uns. Hopefully, this testifies to a good script, penned by Thor writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz. According to The Film Stage, the synopsis is as follows:

“Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.”

Magneto, with his embittered history as a Holocaust survivor, occupies an ambiguous moral position as a defender of mutants he believes could potentially suffer the same genocidal persecution Jews did during the Second World War. This could make for a rich story, and Vaughn is known not to shy away from brutal narrative, but then again, Kick-Ass is a self-parody and can afford to be dark to points of comic excess. Fox, don’t screw us over on this one!

The whispers now say that hottie Amber Heard is being pursued for the role of chamelon Mystique, and ex-Bond girl Rosamund Pike may play supergenius Moira MacTaggert.

The movie is based on the original 2006-2007 eight-issue limited series penned by Jeff Parker and penciled by Roger Cruz, which then spun off into other titles and one-shots. Production will begin September 2010 in London.

Fassbender Opts for Magneto in "X-Men: First Class

Forced to choose between playing an as-yet-undetermined villain in the "Spider-Man" reboot or Magneto in "X-Men" reboot, Michael Fassbender has finally decided to pick up the mantle of Ian McKellen.

Fassbender will play opposite James McAvoy in "X-Men: First Class," according to Showbiz 411. The movie is being helmed by "Kick-Ass" director Matthew Vaughn, and the cast includes Benjamin Walker as Dr. Hank McCoy/Beast, with Amber Heard and Rosamund Pike rumored for Mystique and Emma Frost, respectively.

"X-Men: First Class," due June 3, 2011, goes back to the team's origins and a time when Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr were still close friends coming to grips with their newfound powers.

It would appear that Fassbender made the smart choice. Vaughn has shown a gift for action, while "Spider-Man" director Marc Webb has yet to do anything even close to a super-hero movie. Also, as bad as "X-Men 3" was, the franchise seems to be in better shape than Spidey. The only possible loser is McAvoy, who had better hope that Fassbender doesn't swallow him whole.

Fassbender is one of the hottest actors this side of Sam Worthington, getting scripts thrown at him from all directions. Why it is that Worthington, a middling actor at best, gets offered leads while Fassbender, a true talent, gets offered supporting role is a mystery for another day.

Since his roles last year in "Inglourious Basterds" and "Fish Tank," Fassbender has been seen in "Jonah Hex," and has a number of films on the way, including "Centurion" (Aug. 27), "Jane Eyre" (March 11), "Haywire" (Jan. 2011) and is currently shooting "A Dangerous Method," about the relationship between Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung that's being directed by David Cronenberg and co-starring Viggo Mortensen, Keira Knightley and Vincent Cassel.

Michael Fassbender Is Officially Magneto In "X-Men: First Class"!

If Showbiz 411 is to be believed (and they were with the initial scoop), we all have a reason to see X-Men: First Class now. Michael Fassbender has officially signed to be Erik "Magneto" Lensherr in Matthew Vaughn's prequel / reboot / origin story. This means he won't, unless he possesses a Time Turner and an incredible contract negotiator, appear in Sony's Spider-Man reboot.

The combination of Fassbender, James McAvoy (as Professor Charles Xavier) and Benjamin Walker (as Dr. Hank McCoy) definitely gives this misguided idea a lot of class, and speaks to how good the script must actually be. Fassbender told us during the Jonah Hex junket at ComicCon last year that he doesn't actually read comic books, and seemed perplexed as to how he ends up in so many adaptations. He just likes the scripts. (Again, further proof Jonah Hex had a fun one at some point during its troubled production. Fassbender was pretty enthusiastic about his role -- and he was one of the highlights of the film for sure.)

It must help that Magneto is a meaty character any way you write him. A survivor of concentration camps, Lensherr has always seen the persecution of mutants as another Holocaust waiting to happen. You sympathize with him. Occasionally, the X-Men have found his initial "They're out to get us!" theory is the right one. The sad thing is that his mutant loyalty turns him into the fascist figure he claims to despise. Should Vaughn take this into darker territory (and I'm concerned Fox won't let him), Fassbender and McAvoy's performances could be ones we all point to as proof comic books are rich with character material. Or it could be another "Well ... Fassbender was good." Let's hope it's the former.

Michael Fassbender Chooses X-Men: First Class Over Spider-Man Reboot
June 25th, 2010

We reported earlier this month that actor Michael Fassbender was trying to decide between two villain roles in upcoming superhero movies and now it seems he has made his decision. Showbiz 411, the site that broke the original story, is reporting that Fassbender has signed on for X-Men: First Class.

The Inglourious Basterds actor will play a young Magneto in the film insted of an unspecified villain role in the upcoming Untitled Spider-Man Reboot. Our earlier report indicated that both Fox and Columbia were pursuing him for their films, although his schedule would only allow him to appear in one of the films.

We'll be sure to keep you posted on any further news regarding X-Men: First Class as soon as we have more information.

X-Men: First Class comes to theaters June 3rd, 2011 and stars Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Benjamin Walker. The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn.

Michael Fassbender joins the X Men

(UKPA) – 7 hours ago

Michael Fassbender has accepted the role of the young Magneto in X Men: First Class.

The Inglourious Basterds star was reportedly spoilt for choice when he was offered both the chance to play a younger version of Sir Ian McKellen's X-Men character Magneto in the new X Men prequel and the role of the villain in Marc Webb's Spider Man 4.

Now Fassbender has made his mind up and signed up to star alongside James McAvoy and Benjamin Walker in X Men: First Class, Showbiz411.com reports.

The film is being directed by Kick Ass's Matthew Vaughn and tells the story of how Professer X and Magneto met as young friends discovering their mutant powers, before they became deadly enemies.

Wanted star McAvoy will play the younger version of Sir Patrick Stewart's character Professor X/Charles Xavier.

Fassbender, 33, is currently filming David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method with Viggo Mortensen and Keira Knightley.

He will appear in several films later this year including Jane Eyre in which he plays the dashing Mr Rochester, opposite Mia Wasikowska in the title role, and comic book movie Jonah Hex with Megan Fox and Josh Brolin.

Michael Fassbender Signs Up To X-Men: First Class
By: Martyn Conterio

Michael Fassbender must have tossed a coin to decide whether to take the role of Magneto in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class or the lead villain in the new Spider-Man. He definitely chose wisely. Showbiz 411 report he’s definitely, one hundred per cent and a bit signed up to play the young Magneto alongside James McAvoy’s Professor X.

Things are moving into gear on this production. Benjamin Walker has signed up to play The Beast, Rosamund Pike will be Emma Frost and there’s rumour afoot Amber Heard may well end up donning the blue body paint to be Mystique.

Where does this leave the potential casting of Fassbender in James Watkins’s Woman in Black, which shoots this autumn? It’d be a tough stretch to imagine he’d play the role of the haunted solicitor in the big screen adaptation of Susan Hill’s chilling classic.

X-Men: First Class will be in our cinemas 3rd June, 2011. X-cited? Most definitely. And while we’re at it, maybe we can finally forget the travesty that was X-Men 3.

Michael Fassbender Reportedly Accepts Magneto Role in 'First Class'

June 25, 2010 07:54:42 GMT

The actor has been said choosing the role in the 'X-Men' spin-off over the role in upcoming 'Spider-Man' reboot.

Michael Fassbender was recently reported to have been offered two roles in different movies, "X-Men: First Class" and an untitled Spider-Man reboot. And now the actor has made a decision to take the role of Erik Lensherr aka Magneto in the film about the mutants, Showbiz411 claims.

If the news is true, Fassbender then will star opposite James McAvoy who has been tapped to play Charles Xavier, aka Professor X. The film itself will chart the epic beginning of the "X-Men" saga and follow Xavier and Lensherr when they were still close friends who worked together with other Mutants to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known.

"First Class" has Matthew Vaughn on board to helm the film when it starts production this summer. As of late, it was reported that Benjamin Walker has been cast as Beast, a large intellectually gifted blue mutant, in this action sci-fi which is slated for June 3, 2011 U.S. release.

http://screenrant.com/michael-fassbender-magneto-x-men-first-class-cast-rob-66085/

Michael Fassbender Is Magneto in X-Men: First Class

Michael Fassbender has accepted the offer to play the pivotal role of Magneto opposite James McAvoy’s Professor X in Matthew Vaughn and Bryan Singer’s X-Men: First Class.

With Matthew Vaughn directing and Bryan Singer overseeing the project, X-Men: First Class is well on its way towards bringing moviegoers back to the origins of the superheroes known as the X-Men, kickstarting the franchise in a new direction with some new characters and an entirely different cast. We already know that the man responsible for creating the X-Men, Professor Charles Xavier, will be played by James McAvoy, but now we know who will play his counterpart.

Showbiz411, the folks who exclusively broke the initial report that Fassbender was in the running for both the part of Professor X in X-Men: First Class, but also for the primary villain role in Sony’s 3D Spider-Man reboot, now have confirmation that the German actor has sided with the X-Men.

Fassbender has demonstrated an incredible show of force in recent years which began with his memorable role in 300, leading to key roles in Inglourious Basterds and Centurion among many others. He has 7 projects currently in the works and many more to come. Adding him to the cast, alongside McAvoy, emphasizes the direction that Fox wants to take the X-Men franchise in, a higher quality one.

Of the four X-Men films that have debuted since 2000, two of them (the most recent) have left a bad taste in many a mouth and we hope the negative feedback is helping force a change in the quality of product. By bringing Bryan Singer back in the loop, the director who made the only two good X-Men films, hopefully we’ll get a return to form.
xmen first class magneto michael fassbender

Will Fassbender's Magneto sport any sort of superhero/supervillain costume?

Now that we’ve got the two leaders of X-Men: First Class cast, it’s time to move on with the selection of the actual X-Men team members. This has been a sticky point for fans as we all know that the roster of mutants of Charles Xavier’s first students will differ significantly from the X-Men comics history, due to a broken film universe continuity and the film not acting as a reboot, but as a prequel.

Here’s where we stand with the X-Men: First Class cast so far:

* Michael Fassbender as Magneto
* James McAvoy as Professor X
* Ben Walker as Beast
* Amber Heard for Mystique
* Rosamund Pike as Moira MacTaggert

Fassbender is a perfect choice to stand in the shoes of Ian McKellen for the role of young Magneto and an actor everyone can get behind. With X-Men: First Class seemingly including large elements of the story that would have been presented in the not-happening-anymore X-Men Origins: Magneto, Fassbender is the right fit to play the friend and eventual nemesis of Xavier.

We know director Matthew Vaughn and producer Bryan Singer are hard at work testing for the key roles of Cyclops and Jean Grey, so we can expect more announcements very soon with the film set to begin its UK shoot in the coming weeks.

What do you think the casting of Professor X and Magneto?

Follow me on Twitter @rob_keyes so we can talk X-Men and be sure to follow us all @screenrant.

X-Men: First Class opens June 3, 2011.

Michael Fassbender Chooses X-MEN: FIRST CLASS over SPIDER-MAN Reboot
by Jason Barr Posted:June 24th, 2010 at 6:14 pm

A couple of weeks ago, we reported that Michael Fassbender (Inglorious Bastards) was destined to enter the Marvel universe one way or another: either as a young Magneto in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, or as an unnamed villain in Marc Webb’s upcoming Spider-Man reboot. Quite a stretch from my day-to-day decisions which normally center around debating the age-old question of Subway or Chipotle. In spite of my bitterness, however, Showbiz 411 is reporting that Fassbender has made his choice and will play Magneto in X-Men: First Class.

Hit the jump for a refresher on who else is confirmed to join Fassbender in the film which is tentatively set for a June 3, 2011 release.

As of now, confirmed to star alongside Fassbender in X-Men: First Class is James McAvoy (Wanted) as Professor Charles Xavier, Benjamin Walker (Flags of our Fathers) in the dual-role of Dr. Hank McCoy / Beast, and Rosamund Pike (An Education) as Emma Frost. Currently, rumors are swirling around Amber Heard (Pineapple Express) reprising Rebecca Romijn’s turn as the shapeshifting, yet sexy (aren’t the two synonymous?), Mystique. Stay tuned for an official word on that role and many others as the cast for First Class is sure to fill up in the near future.

Michael Fassbender Chooses X-Men Over Spider-Man
June 24, 2010

Back on June 10 we reported that actor Michael Fassbender was being considered by Sony to star in the Spider-Man reboot and by Fox to play a young Magneto in X-Men: First Class. That scoop came from Roger Friedman whom has since returned with Fassbender's final decision.

Whether lured by the opportunity to play a younger version of Ian McKellen, act alongside James McAvoy, work under Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) or enjoy a bigger paycheck, Fassbender has chosen to go the way of the mutant rather than up against a young webslinger. He joins Benjamin Walker as well as McAvoy on the still burgeoning cast list.

Fox is likely holding off on officially announcing any cast members until Comic-Con next month, at which time they can either parade the ensemble cast on stage or via telecast. In addition to definitely confirming the cast, the convention should also confirm the final roster of mutants that will appear in the film alongside Xavier and Charles.

Michael Fassbender (Reportedly) Accepts The Role Of Magneto
I say reportedly because nothing has been officially confirmed by Fox, but Showbiz411 who originally reported the rumor of his talks to star as Magneto in X-Men: First Class reckon its a done deal..

It was rumored first that Fassbender had his pick of super hero movie roles, after being sought after by both Mathew Vaughn and Marc Webb for Magneto in First Class and the as yet unrevealed villain in Webb's Spider-Man reboot. Speculation led to confirmation that he was indeed in talks with Fox for the role of Magneto, and now Showbiz411 reports..

I told you some time ago — exclusively–that Michael Fassbender, hot as a pistol, had to choose between roles in the new “X Men” and “Spider Man.” I am told he has made his choice, and will appear in “X Men: First Class.”

I should point out that although Showbiz411 broke the news that the talks were underway, it was Bleeding Cool that first reported the rumor that Fassbender was being sought after for the villainous roles. Anyway, most people figure this was a done deal anyway, this is just confirmation..almost! Fassbender(allegedly:) joins James McAvoy(Charles Xavier) and Benjamin Walker(Beast) in Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming look back at the early years of The Uncanny X-Men. Apparently Vaughn is looking to fast track this for a release early next year so expect more casting details very soon. We already have a couple of lovely ladies in Amber Heard and Rosamund Pike rumored to be up for the roles of Mystique and Moria McTaggert.

Michael Fassbender accepts Magneto role in X-Men: First Class

by Liam on June 24, 2010

Michael Fassbender Magneto X Men Late last week 20th Century Fox formally offered Michael Fassbender the role of Magneto following his screen test for the part the previous week. It was reported that Sony were also after the actor to play the villain in the Spider-Man reboot, but it appears they may have to look for someone else as according to Roger Friedman Fassbender has decided to play the Master of Magnetism.

Finding someone to step into the shoes of one of Britain’s best actors, Ian McKellen, can’t have been easy, although I think Matthew Vaughn has made a great choice with Fassbender.

Fassbender’s casting brings the confirmed cast up to 3, with James McAvoy playing Xavier and Benjamin Walker playing Beast. Rosamund Pike and Amber Heard are rumored to be in talks to play Dr. Moira MacTaggert and Mystique, although nothing has been officially announced.

This just leaves Vaughn and the team to find their Jean, Cyclops, Storm and their villain (whoever that will be). Filming is expected to begin in August with sets currently being built at Pinewood Studios in the UK.

Michael Fassbender to be Magento in X-Men: First Class movie

From Showbiz 411:

I told you some time ago — exclusively–that Michael Fassbender, hot as a pistol, had to choose between roles in the new “X Men” and “Spider Man.” I am told he has made his choice, and will appear in “X Men: First Class.” James McAvoy and Benjamin Walker are also cast in Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming blockbuster. All this news makes me want to see this movie before it’s even made!…

It's getting to the point where so many actors have been cast in two or more comic-to-film adaptations. This will be Fassbender third comic book film, he was in 300 and Jonah Hex. James McAvoy was in Wanted.

It’s Official Michael Fassbender will Play Magneto in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

Earlier this month Michael Fassbender ( Inglorious Basterds and 300) had a decision to make. Would he play Magneto in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, or would he take on the role of a unknown villain in Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot? Well, he’s made his choice, and he chose X-Men!

His casting in X-Men: First Class only ups the value of the film, and gives us another reason to be excited for it. I hoped that Fassbender would choose the Magneto role, I think it will be a better role for him in the long run. Plus he’ll do an awesome job as Magneto, he’s a great actor.

He will join the only two other actors that have official been cast in the film so far James McAvoy who is playing Professor X, and Benjamin Walker who will be playing Beast.

The film will be about the formation of The X-Men and show us the relationship origin story of a young Xavier and a young Magneto. Here’s the official Plot synopsis:

X-Men: First Class, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.

What are your thought on Fassbender taking on the role of Magneto?

Fassbender Offically Signs on to X-men: First Class
Stumble This Add to Technorati Faves DiggIt! Posted by Travis Hopson on Friday, June 25, 2010

I feel like I've written about this story a half dozen times. Oh yeah, that's because I have. As was basically confirmed but not made official until today, Michael Fassbender has decided to take on the role of the master of magnetism, Magneto, in X-Men: First Class. He had been doggedly pursued by both Sony and Fox for two different roles in Marvel films, the other being the villain in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot. With rumors being that the villain will be The Lizard, it was sortof a no-brainer which one he'd choose.

Fassbener joins James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier, and Benjamin Walker as The Beast in Matthew Vaughn's superhero prequel.

Thank goodness that's finally over.

Michael Fassbender Confirmed For ‘X-Men: First Class’?

Near the beginning of the month, rumors began to fly that Michael Fassbender was a leading contender to appear in “X-Men: First Class” or the villain in the “Spider-Man” reboot. And while Fassbender was later confirmed to be in talks to portray Magneto in “X-Men: First Class,” there has been no official news since.

However, Fassbender is now rumored to have officially accepted the role of Magneto, according to Showbiz411 (which was the source of the original rumor linking Fassbender to “First Class”). If confirmed, Fassbender will appear opposite James McAvoy as Professor Xavier and Benjamin Walker as the Beast.

Fassbender’s most recent role was in “Jonah Hex,” which was released in theaters last week. He has also previously appeared in “300,” “Inglourious Bastards” and “Band of Brothers.”

Previously, Rosamund Pike has also been rumored to be up for the role of Emma Frost. “Kick-Ass” star Aaron Johnson and Andrew Garfield (“The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”) were also reportedly under consideration for “First Class” roles as well.

“X-Men: First Class” is primarily expected to be about the relationship between Professor Xavier and Magneto during the earliest days of the “X-Men,” while also chronicling their eventual conflict that transforms them into mortal enemies.

The film is also being developed under “accelerated development” in order to meet its June 3, 2011 release date.

Matthew Vaughn signed on to direct the film last month. Screenwriter Jane Goldman — who worked with Vaughn on “Kick-Ass” and “Stardust” — is also reportedly working on the script for “X-Men: First Class.”

What are your thoughts on Michael Fassbender potentially stepping in to the role of Magneto? Do you think “X-Men: First Class” will be finished in time for its release date? Let us know what you’re thinking in the comment section or on Twitter!

Michael Fassbender is Young Magneto

Magneto

X-Men: The First Class has landed itself a leading man for Magneto – and yep, Michael Fassbender will be the one donning the tin can helmet.

A few weeks back, Fassbender was reportedly considering whether or not to join First Class as Magneto, or take on other Marvel franchise Spider-Man in an unspecified villain role.

Well, it seems he’s made the right decision, opting to work with hot ticket Matthew Vaughn on his prequel comic book movie, which will dig into the past of our favourite X-Men to establish their origins – y’know, before Bryan Singer’s origins movies, that is.

Fassbender was no doubt enticed by the prospect of working with Vaughn, as well as James McAvoy, who will be sharing time with him as a younger version of Professor X.

Other actors who have recently signed on are Benjamin Walker as Beast, Rosamund Pike as Emma Frost, and rumours abound that Amber Heard could be the new Mystique.

X-Men: First Class is set to hit cinemas on 3 June, 2011.

Michael Fassbender To Master Magnetism: Officially Cast As Magneto In 'X-Men: First Class'

An offer's been on the table, and it looks like Michael Fassbender will take the money and run. The Irish thesp is reportedly signed, sealed and delivered for next summer's "X-Men: First Class" as metal-manipulating mutant villain Erik Lehnsherr, aka Magneto. The Fox synopsis seems to reflect the film's story dealing with the early friendship between Magneto and Professor Xavier (James McAvoy) and the formation of Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters. If that's so, this is the first of many possible huge lead roles for the "Hunger" and "Centurion" star.

Magneto's history, as told in the first three "X-Men" films, depict the villain as a Holocaust survivor, but with Fox forging ahead using a new mythology, it looks like that backstory might be scuttled, a necessary concession to realism (as modern-day Magneto would then be over 70). We were also fans of Ian McKellan's performance, as he seemed to make the idea of mutants being terrorists a nearly appealing one, particularly in the third film when the questionable heroism of the X-Men was countered by McKellan flashing a Holocaust tattoo, declaring, "No needle shall ever touch my skin again!"

Fassbender joins the cast which has Rosamund Pike, Ben Walker, Aaron Johnson and Amber Heard among the names rumored to be drawing interest at Fox offices for a variety of roles. Filming beings in August for a June 3, 2011 release under director Matthew Vaughn. Fassbender's involvement is honestly the first news item about this film to perk our interest; while we like him a lot, we also hope he gives an original spin to the material. Not that there's anything wrong with a good Ian McKellan impersonation.

Michael Fassbender to appear in “X Men: First Class”
By: Roger Friedman

HollywoodNews.com: I told you some time ago — exclusively–that Michael Fassbender, hot as a pistol, had to choose between roles in the new “X Men” and “Spider Man.” I am told he has made his choice, and will appear in “X Men: First Class.” James McAvoy and Benjamin Walker are also cast in Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming blockbuster. All this news makes me want to see this movie before it’s even made!…

….Jake Paltrow, blue eyed younger brother of Gwyneth, has a secret. Shhhh. Paltrow, an accomplished director, is making a hush hush secret documentary with “Fantastic Mr. Fox” writer-director Noah Baumbach. They’re shooting in Los Angeles this week, after having shot in New York. Paltrow was spotted by yours truly this week at LAX touting a camera tripod off the baggage carousel. He won’t say what the film is about, or even if it’s got a script or a narrator. And what about big Sis, since I know you wanted me to ask? Sad for the tabloids, lovely Gwyneth is still married, living in London, raising her kids. She is not working this summer. That’s all I got! I tried!…Hey–rent Noah’s film, “Mr. Jealousy.” It’s a little gem…

Michael Fassbender a lock for X-Men : The First Class
by Clint Morris (Friday, June 25th, 2010 at 10:31 pm )

In-demand thespian Michael Fassbenger has officially signed on to play a young Magneto in Fox's "X-Men : The First Class", Heat Vision reports.

News of Fassbender's courting leaked a few weeks back. At the time it was said that the "Inglourious Basterds" actor had been offered roles in both "X-Men" and "Spider-Man", but due to the two films shooting at roughly the same time would have to decide which one he wanted.

Fassbender joins James MvAvoy, recently cast as Professor Xavier, in the Matthew Vaughn-directed project.

It may be a while before we hear any more casting news on "X-Men" - seems the production lost it's casting director, Mindy Marin this week, with Joseph Middleton just anointed her replacement.

Does X-Men: First Class Have Any Class?
Posted by Gia Manry on Jun 26, 2010 in Cinema, Comic Books |

X-Men: First Class

Having managed to run the most popular X-Men characters into the ground in a mere four films (”mere” given the sheer volume of characters to make use of), Fox’s X-Men: First Class is starting to look like one of those movies that’s the fourth or fifth flick in a popular movie franchise, where the movie gets released directly to DVD and stars an entirely different (and cheaper) cast than the original.

X-Men First Class Producer Bryan Singer

So let’s take a look at what we’ve got. The current producer for the film is Bryan Singer, who did the good X-Men (the first) and the semi-okay one (X2). The man directed(/wrote/produced) stinkeroo Superman Returns. So where we started at a grade “0″ I’m going to drop this out to a “-20.”

X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn

Matthew Vaughn, who helmed Kick-Ass reasonably well but rather missed the mark in the 2007 Neil Gaiman novel adaptation Stardust, is set to helm the movie. In spite of producing Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, I’m forced to drop us another 20 points. -40.

X-Men First Class's Magneto: Michael Fassbender

Word’s out that Michael Fassbender is in talks to take over Magneto from the esteemed Sir Ian McKellen. I don’t know what it means to bend fasses (and it sounds vaguely dirty), but the guy was in Inglorious Bastards, 300, and Band of Brothers. So we know he can do military. I also understand he went on a crash diet to lose weight for a flick called Hunger. Still and all, it’s tough to follow up McKellen. The Fass, as I’m going to call him from now on, nudges us back up to a -20.

X-Men: First Class's Professor Xavier: James McAvoy

And then we have Professor X. Everyone knew that no one could play ol’ Xavier better than Sir Patrick Stewart (woh was knighted this very year!). But young Xavier is being handed off to one James McAvoy. Now, I don’t care that he was in Atonement (I never liked the book myself)– the man played the most boring superhero-ish-guy ever in Wanted. NO THANK YOU! Minus fifty for a total of -70.

Writer Jamie Moss, whose only past credit I can find includes the widely-panned Keanu Reeves vehicle Street Kings (which even Hugh Laurie couldn’t save), drops us down to an even -100 points.

It’ll take some pretty amazing casting and word-of-mouth to make me optimistic about X-Men: First Class again.

Its Official: Michael Fassbender to play Magneto in X-Men: First Class

According to Heat Vision Blog, Michael Fassbender has signed on the dotted line and has officially joined X-Men: First Class as the X-Men's arch-nemesis Magneto. He had also been courted as playing a villain in the Spider-Man movie relaunch.

Fassbender will join the previously announced James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier, and Benjamin Walker in the role of Beast.

Michael Fassbender has gotten his big break in the recent Quentin Tarentino movie Inglorious Basterds, and he has shown that he can be quite charismatic. My question is could he be as good a Magneto as Sir Ian McKellen, or could he be even better?
