Box office amounts:

TAKERS (Not THE LAST EXORCISM) on Top; AVATAR: SPECIAL EDITION Fails to Crack $5K Average: Box Office

Further down the North American box-office chart for Aug. 27-29, among the top 25 movies M. Night Shyamalan‘s The Last Airbender and Bruce Beresford‘s Mao’s Last Dancer were the only two to post gains in relation to the previous weekend, as per figures found at Box Office Mojo.

The Last Airbender grossed $418k at 306 theaters, a 122% increase following the addition of 83 sites. Total to date: $130.5m.

Mao’s Last Dancer took in $299k at 75 theaters, a 50% increase following the addition of 42 sites. Total to date: $1.193m.

Starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, David Slade‘s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse had the lowest drop-off rate, -9.2%, despite the loss of 81 venues.

Eclipse pulled in $514k at 476 theaters. Total after nine weekends: $298.02m.

Aaron Schneider‘s Get Low, starring Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, and Bill Murray, collected $1.64m at 570 sites. Total to date: $3.63m.

Jean-François Richet‘s Mesrine: Killer Instinct, which some have called "the French The Godfather," pulled in $152k at 28 locations (average $5,460). The crime drama stars Vincent Cassel, Cécile De France, and Gérard Depardieu.

Another new entry, Neil Marshall‘s Centurion, fared less well, earning $42k at 12 locations (average $3,659). The period war drama set in Britain during the Roman conquest stars Michael Fassbender.

Actually, I don't think that's bad. I didn't even think it would make that much, considering the other indie releases did. And the fact that Centurion got extremely mixed reviews.

I do think it's funny about Avatar. Think it's overdone?

Arthouse Audit: 'Get Low' Rises Higher
by Ray Subers
Get Low

August 31, 2010

After expanding in to a nearly-wide 570 theaters, Get Low easily topped all limited releases for the third straight weekend. Mao's Last Dancer also added a handful of theaters and cruised in to second, while The Girl Who Played with Fire slowed a bit but maintained a solid pace. The top new release this weekend was documentary Nick Saban: Gamechanger, while French gangster movie Mesrine: Killer Instinct also had a fine debut.

Get Low was up 130 percent to $1.64 million, making this the biggest weekend for a Sony Pictures Classics release since The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus grossed $1.76 million back in January. It's per theater average of $2,878 didn't inspire much excitement, though, and it's unlikely that Get Low will see any further expansion of consequence. The Robert Duvall-Bill Murray comedy has earned $3.6 million through its fifth weekend.

Mao's Last Dancer more than doubled its theater count to 75 and grossed $299,691, representing a 50 percent improvement over last weekend. Including back grosses from Canada, it has made $1.19 million.

The Girl Who Played with Fire dipped 21 percent to $296,518. The second part in the Millennium trilogy has made $6.18 million through its eighth weekend and still leads predecessor The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by just under $1 million through the same point.

Nick Saban: Gamechanger opened at 26 theaters throughout the Southeast, grossing $188,786. This translates to a decent per theater average of $7,261 for the documentary focusing on the titular Alabama football head coach.

Cairo Time added 17 theaters for a total of 49, and was up 38 percent to $182,409. The Middle East-set romance starring Patricia Clarkson has made $604,738 through its fourth weekend.

Mesrine: Killer Instinct debuted to $152,873 at 28 locations, averaging $5,460 per site. The biographical epic has already made over $30 million overseas, and its sequel, Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1, is set to open next weekend.

Neil Marshall's period action movie Centurion opened at 12 theaters and grossed a measly $42,826. The movie, which stars Michael Fassbender, Dominic West and Olga Kurylenko, has already been available for rental on Video on Demand services for a month or so. Foreign comedy Change of Plans had the best per theater average of all limited releases, debuting to $15,378 at two locations. Horror thriller Circle earned $3,926 at two theaters, while The Milk of Sorrow and Daniel & Ana each launched at a single location and earned $1,914 and $1,400, respectively.
