L'INSTINCT DE SURVIE

Bête de guerre (Inglourious Basterds) ou bête de sexe (Fish Tank), MICHAEL FASSBENDER instille une présence animale à ses rôles, qui se manifeste par un instinct de préservation forcené. Amputés (Angel), torturés (Eden Lake) ou amaigris (Hunger), ses personnages livrent toujours une lutte acharnée, avant la capitulation. Des rôles qui emblématisent la volonté de fer de l’acteur irlandais, qui s’est hissé à la hauteur des plus grands d’Hollywood. Une bête de somme dont le talent éclate de nouveau dans Fish Tank, où il campe un amant ambigu. Interview.

Vous incarnez souvent des personnages qui tombent le masque. Dans Inglourious Basterds, Archie Hicox se trahit par un geste de la main. Dans Angel, on apprend qu’Esmé était adultère. Dans Fish Tank enfin, on découvre que Connor, l’amant rêvé, est en fait père de famille. Qu’est-ce qui vous attire dans ces rôles ambigus ?

J’aime beaucoup interpréter des personnages doubles ou m’impliquer dans des films très équivoques. En tant que spectateur, je trouve ça plus intéressant quand le film m’interroge, plutôt que quand toutes les réponses me sont données.

D’Hunger à Fish Tank, vos personnages sont souvent tiraillés par des problèmes moraux. Considérez-vous Connor comme quelqu’un de mauvais ?

Je n’aime pas l’adjectif « mauvais » et ne suis pas certain de le comprendre. Plus exactement, je ne pourrais pas approcher un personnage qui aurait pour caractéristique d’être « mauvais », parce je ne pourrais pas du tout me le représenter. Je prends en compte ses motivations et les moyens à sa disposition. Dans Fish Tank, Connor est quelqu’un qui n’a pas le sens des responsabilités et qui fuit les difficultés. Il est inconséquent, ce qui pourrait le faire passer pour un lâche. Cependant, je ne le considère pas comme quelqu’un de malveillant, ses intentions sont louables. Selon moi, son comportement vis-à-vis de Mia est amoral quand il tire avantage de son statut d’homme idéal, comme un professeur avec son élève. C’est un homme profondément faible.

Dans la majorité de vos films, vous utilisez votre corps d’une façon remarquable. Pourquoi les cinéastes aiment-ils tant vous malmener, d’après-vous ?

Peut-être les metteurs en scène aiment-ils tous crucifier leurs acteurs ! La dimension corporelle a toujours été très importante pour moi. La manière dont un personnage bouge et se tient me permet de découvrir ce qu’il est. Avec le corps, vous pouvez véhiculer un tas de choses : la confiance qu’a le personnage en lui, le métier qu’il exerce, ses origines sociales, son état d’esprit, ses intentions...

Il y a un vrai bestiaire dans Fish Tank. Pensez-vous qu’il souligne les penchants primaires de votre personnage ?

Je n’ai jamais perçu Connor comme un prédateur. Il n’est pas si calculateur. Je n’ai reçu que la partie du scénario qui concernait mon personnage, aussi je n’étais pas au courant qu’il y avait tous ces animaux dans l’histoire. Après avoir vu le film, je pense que le cheval est l’animal le plus emblématique. Mia veut libérer cette bête pleine d’entrain de ses chaînes.

Dans Inglourious Basterds, Archie Hicox parle un allemand presque parfait. Dans quelle mesure vos origines mixtes vous aident-elles à aborder des rôles multiculturels ?

Je me sens très européen [de père allemand et de mère irlandaise, Michael est né à Heidelberg, en Allemagne, mais a grandi à Killarney, en Irlande, ndlr]. Nous avons une histoire dont la diversité et les échanges font qu’on apprend beaucoup les uns des autres. Nous avons appris à cohabiter de manière unique et à apprécier une variété de cultures dans un espace très concentré. Je puise beaucoup dans cette richesse. Plus spécifiquement, pour le film de Tarantino, j’avais l’avantage de savoir parler allemand. Mais j’étais un peu rouillé. J’ai travaillé avec un répétiteur germanique et je n’avais plus qu’à pratiquer la langue, encore et encore. C’est aussi simple et ennuyeux que cela.

Le film 300 vous a ouvert les portes d’Hollywood. Regrettez-vous parfois vos débuts de comédien amateur ?

Une grande part de moi admire et regrette cette période où l’on se bat pour travailler. Cela vous donne une avidité, une force et une exigence qui peuvent se dissoudre dans le succès. Si l’on compare ce parcours à l’ascension d’une montagne, le plus important réside-t-il dans la progression ou dans l’arrivée au sommet ? Ceci étant dit, je ne voudrais pas revenir à la période où je prenais des cours de comédie, sachant ce qui m’est arrivé par la suite…

Comment vous sentez-vous à Hollywood ?

J’occupe une position privilégiée, que je ne considère pas comme acquise. Il y a beaucoup de réalisateurs que j’admire et avec qui j’aimerais travailler. Je suis le plus heureux des hommes car je travaille, alors que j’ai passé des années à me languir après des rôles. Pas le droit de se plaindre!

Quels sont vos projets ?

Je viens d’achever le tournage d’un western, intitulé Jonah Hex de Jimmy Hayward, avec Josh Brolin, John Malkovich et Megan Fox. Je me suis beaucoup amusé. Là encore, je m’estime heureux de m’être mesuré à de telles pointures. Blockbusters ou films d’auteur, je ne vois pas la différence à part le nombre de personnes impliquées dans le processus. Après, je fais mes devoirs de la même manière !

You often incarnate characters who fall the mask. In Inglourious Basterds, archie Hicox is betrayed by an epic of the hand. In Angel, one learns that Esmé was adulterous. In Fish Tank finally, one discovers that Connor, the dreamed lover, is in fact father. What attracts you in these ambiguous roles?

I like much to interpret double characters or to imply in films ambiguities very. As a spectator rather, I find that more interesting when the film questions me, than when all the answers are given to me.

D' Hunger with Fish Tank, your characters are often pulled about by moral problems. Do you regard Connor as somebody of bad?

I do not like the “bad” adjective and am not certain to include/understand it. More exactly, I could not approach a character who would have as a characteristic to be “bad”, parce I could not represent it at all to me. I take into account his motivations and the means at his disposal. In Fish Tank, Connor is somebody who does not have the direction of the responsibilities and which flees the difficulties. It is inconsistent, which could make it pass for a coward. However, I do not regard it as somebody of malevolent, his intentions are creditable. In my opinion, its behavior with respect to Mia is amoral when it draws advantage from its statute of ideal man, as a professor with his pupil. It is a deeply weak man.

In the majority of your films, you use your body in a remarkable way. Why the scenario writers like do so much to abuse you, of after you?

Perhaps the directors love all crucifier their actors! Body dimension was always very important for me. The way in which a character moves and is held enables me to discover what it is. With the body, you can convey a heap of things: the confidence which the character in him has, the trade which he exerts, its social origins, its frame of mind, its intentions…

There is a true bestiary in Fish Tank. Do you think that it underlines the primary education inclinations of your character?

I never perceived Connor like a predator. It is not if calculator. I received only the part of the scenario which concerned my character, as I were not with the current as there were all these animals in the history. After having seen film, I think that the horse is the animal emblématique. Mia wants to release this animal full with spirit of its chains.

In Inglourious Basterds, archie Hicox speaks almost perfect German. Up to what point do your mixed origins help you to approach multicultural roles?

I feel very European [from German father and Irish mother, Michael was born in Heidelberg, in Germany, but grew in Killarney, in Ireland, note]. We have a history whose diversity and exchanges make that one learns much from/to each other. We learned how to cohabit in a single way and to appreciate a variety of cultures in a very concentrated space. I draw much from this richness. More specifically, for film of Tarantino, I had the advantage of knowing to speak German. But I was rusted a little. I worked with a Germanic repeater and I did not have any more but to practise the language, still and still. They is also simple and tedious which that.

Film 300 opened the doors of Hollywood to you. Do you regret sometimes your beginnings of actor amateur?

A great part of me admires and regrets this period when one fights to work. That gives you a greed, a force and a requirement which can dissolve in success. If one compares this course with the rise of a mountain, most important do reside in the progression or the arrival at the top? This being said, I would not like to return at the period when I took run of comedy, knowing what arrived to me thereafter…

How do you feel in Hollywood?

I occupy a privileged position, which I do not regard as not acquired. There are many realizers whom I admire and with which I would like to work. I am happiest of the men because I work, whereas I spent the years to languish me for roles. Not right to complain!

Which are your projects?

I have just completed the turning of a western, heading Jonah Hex de Jimmy Hayward, with Josh Brolin, John Malkovich and Megan Fox. I had fun much. There still, I estimate myself happy to be myself measured with such sizes. Blockbusters or films of author, I do not see the difference with share the number of people implied in the process. Afterwards, I make my duties in the same way!
