Ridley Scott’s Prometheus Already Breaking UK Records for IMAX Pre-Sales
May 4, 2012 By Kenji Lloyd

Prometheus PosterRidley Scott’s highly anticipated return to the sci-fi genre this year with Prometheus is set to take the summer box office by storm.

Released at the start of June – going head-to-head with Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman – Scott’s film has already been breaking records* a month in advance, with ticket pre-sales at the BFI IMAX in London surging to almost $500,000.

“Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.”

Co-written by Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts, the film stars Logan Marshall-Green, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, and Patrick Wilson – essentially, the cast is amazing – and has already sold more than eighteen thousand tickets at time of writing, taking £293,312 ($474,687). And we’ve still got four weeks until its release, so that number will only be going in one direction!

Tickets are on sale now via the BFI’s official website, and there are still plenty of seats available throughout its three-week run there, from 1st to 21st June, kicking things off with a midnight screening at 00:01 in the wee hours of that first Friday morning. The first day alone has also taken a record-breaking £137,000 ($221,717) so far in pre-sales, completely selling out the two evening showings.

The figures are even better than other films that have played at the BFI IMAX, including The Dark Knight, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, and Avatar, and I have a feeling that the only things that might be beating it this year will be The Dark Knight Rises as the first instalment of The Hobbit. Time will tell.

In all honesty, I had my money on Snow White and the Huntsman taking the number one spot in the first weekend of June, but it looks like I could definitely be wrong about that.

Prometheus will be released on 1st June in the UK, and 8th June in the US, and you can catch all our coverage of the film so far by clicking here.

*It’s worth remembering that Joss Whedon’s The Avengers (released as ‘Avengers Assemble’ here) didn’t play at the BFI IMAX because it’s distributed as a digital 3D film, rather than a print. It certainly would have been interesting to see the figures it could have taken if it had been playing in London.

Box Office Report: 'Prometheus' Lands in North America With $3.6 Mil in Midnight Grosses

The strong performance included a stellar $1 million from 294 IMAX locations.

From director Ridley Scott, Prometheus headlines Noomi Repace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron.

Prometheus did notably better in its midnight performance than several recent event pics.

Last weekend, Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman -- also starring Theron alongside Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth -- grossed $1.4 million in midnight runs on its way to a $56.2 million weekend. And two weeks ago, Sony's Men in Black 3 took in $1.6 million in midnight grosses.

Box office observers are divided as to how much Prometheus will open to at the domestic box office, with estimates ranging from $35 million to north of $55 million. The highly anticipated tentpole does have the advantage of playing in 3D -- meaning higher ticket prices -- as well as playing in IMAX theaters.

At the same time, Prometheus is rated R, unlike many of its fellow tentpoles. There's also the question of how many females will turn out to see the movie.

Fox and Scott are hoping that Prometheus launches a new franchise, similar to Scott's blockbuster Alien series.

Ridley Scott's Prometheus might have featured an outer space struggle against killer aliens. But there were some serious fireworks in its box-office battle against the wisecracking creatures of Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted.

Madagascar 3 pulled away with the weekend crown with an estimated $60 million weekend take over a $50 million draw from Prometheus.

But both films added serious voltage to the weekend box office as they led a surge of moviegoers back to the theaters. Receipts were up nearly 30% over last year's box office.

"This was a huge weekend for the movie industry," says Paul Dergarabedian, Hollywood.com's box-office analyst. "With the animated Madagascar and the R-rated Prometheus leading the way, there was literally something for every age group at the theaters. And audiences responded."

Last weekend's box-office champ, Snow White and the Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, continued to perform well. It took third place with $23 million, bringing its worldwide total to $182 million. Men in Black 3 placed fourth with $13.5 million in its third weekend.

The Avengers continued to cement its status as the most successful superhero movie of all time, earning a respectable $10.8 million in its sixth week of release.

Even mature audience members were well represented at theaters, with TheBest Exotic Marigold Hotel earning $3.2 million over the weekend in its sixth weekend of release. Fox reported that its audience is mostly Baby Boomers and other viewers over 45. The comedy about British retirees moving to India stars Dame Judi Dench and Tom Wilkinson.

Independent moviegoers also responded to Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, which took the 10th spot as it continues to open across the country. The quirky teenage love story (which also features Bruce Willis and Bill Murray) brought in $1.6 million.

Prometheus had jumped to the weekend lead with a strong showing on Friday of $21.4 million. But Madagascar— featuring the voices of Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett Smith and David Schwimmer— pulled ahead as the weekend progressed.

Dergarabedian was equally impressed with both films, especially considering that Prometheus was working with a challenging R rating.

"Both of these film really exceeded expectations," he says. "This is a case of both kids and aliens taking the weekend."
