Hollywood's newest star Mia Wasikowska wows in ruffles at the première of Jane Eyre
By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 6:16 AM on 10th March 2011
She may not look as at home on the red carpet as some of Hollywood's bigger stars, but any movie with Mia Wasikowska is sure to be a hit.
While not yet a household name, Mia was the highest grossing female star of last year, with her movies bringing in more than $1.03 billion.
The Alice In Wonderland star looked stylish yet understated as she walked the red carpet last night for her new film.

Dressed in a chic ruffled black dress and black peep toe pumps, the 21-year-old star looked demure as she arrived at the New York première of Jane Eyre held at the Tribeca Grand Hotel.
Mia was joined by her co-star Michael Fassbender and the film's director Cary Fukunaga.
Jane Eyre, in which Mia plays the title character, is a re-imagination of the Victoria era novel by Charlotte Bronte about a mousy governess who softens the heart of her employer and soon discovers that he's hiding a terrible secret.

Glenn Close and Mia Wasikowska at the Jane Eyre premiere
Might as well get used to seeing Wasikowska: The Times' Amy Kaufman reports the "Alice in Wonderland" actress' upcoming slate includes "Restless," directed by Gus Van Sant; "The Wettest County in the World" with Shia LaBeouf; "Stoker" with Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman; and "Albert Nobbs," a drama co-written by Glenn Close.
Close made it to the premiere -- as did her "Damages" co-star Rose Byrne -- and chatted up the "Jane Eyre" lead later during the after-party.
Also spotted: Debra Winger and actor-husband Arliss Howard, Zoe Kravitz, and Sebastian Stan of "Gossip Girl." Click the pics for more photos from the premiere.

New and Improved: ‘Jane Eyre’
By Lauren Jensen / March 10, 2011 1:15 pm
There is only one word when you see the trailer for the upcoming film, Jane Eyre; WOW. Your jaw will drop as you are invited into the wondrous mystery of the age-old classic. How could something so well known feel so new and different? The cast for one thing. Starring as Jane is Tim Burton‘s Alice in Wonderland, Mia Wasikowska. At her side playing the part of her employer/love interest is new star Michael Fassbender as Mr. Rochester.
PHOTOS: Mia Wasikowska at the 2010 Independent Spirit Awards
He created a name for himself in Inglorious Basterds and is sure to be seen a lot more in the upcoming future. While he may be the perfect Mr. Rochester for the 2011 version of Jane Eyre, he is decidedly better looking than the original book had intended but I doubt you will hear too many complaints about this casting decision. Seen above at the film’s premiere at the Tribeca Grand Hotel last night, the pair make quite the lovely couple even in today’s garb. However, the suspenseful and dark take on the classic, which is set to hit select theaters March 11, truly highlights the angst of love in eras past and present. I for one will be running to the theaters for this one. Video trailer after the jump.

Mia Wasikowska and Rose Byrne: 'Jane Eyre' Premiere Style
March 10, 2011 09:00 PM EST
"Jane Eyre," Michael Fassbender's latest film, held its New York premiere at the Tribeca Grand Hotel on Wednesday, March 9. Mia Wasikowska, who plays the title role, attended the premiere in a precious, couture dress by Elie Saab.
Mia chose a black, boat neck dress which had floral appliques and sequins, as spotted by Just Jared. The wider neckline showed off Mia’s small waist, as did the a-line skirt. It truly was a beautiful dress. However, that mid-calf length was not the best look for Mia. It seemed like the dress either had to have a shorter hem or a higher waist in order for it to work. What did work were her simple updo and gorgeous, dewy make-up.
Joining Mia at the premiere was "Damages" actress Rose Byrne. Rose went for a more modern approach with her formal shorts. Her long-sleeved, ruffled, vintage blouse kept with the movie’s romantic theme. Black tights and black, patent Miu Miu pumps completed her look. There’s something about shorts for a film premiere, just like shorts during winter, that just doesn’t seem right. But, Rose somehow pulled it off. Maybe it was that sassy, shoulder-length hair with those long bangs and those bold, red lips that made it all work.

From 'Alice' to 'Jane'
By DIANA SCHOLL
This weekend, the 21-year-old Australian actress Mia Wasikowska tackles yet another 19th-century literary heroine: Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre in Focus Features's new adaptation of the novel.
'Jane Eyre' co-stars Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender
"After 'Alice in Wonderland,' there was thought that things might change for me, but they didn't really," Ms. Wasikowska said at Wednesday's "Jane Eyre" premiere at the Tribeca Grand. "I think I'm too boring for the paparazzi."
Not too boring for Glenn Close. "Mia is a complete joyous original," Ms. Close said. "I loved the movie, and that's a toughie. Did you know she filmed the rainy scene at the beginning of filming and was basically sick for the rest of the shoot?"
Michael Fassbender, who stars opposite Ms. Wasikowska in the film, is also poised to break out this year in a handful of films, including an "X-Men" prequel. On Wednesday, he was so busy he went straight from the red carpet to the shoot of an upcoming feature co-starring Carey Mulligan. "I still haven't seen 'Jane Eyre,'" he joked.

Jane Eyre Premieres at the Tribeca Grand Hotel
Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender
Mia Wasikowska was the first to hit the red carpet last night at the Tribeca Grand Hotel for the Jane Eyre premiere (hitting theaters Friday, March 11th). Her striking black structured-yet-soft Elie Saab dress and (seemingly makeup-free) face was perfectly emblematic of her mix of old-soul poise and fresh-faced youth that has so charmed Hollywood and audiences.
Though even with her aura of innocence, after some initial nervousness, the 21-year-old said she had no difficulty playing the love interest of a man 12 years her senior, “The first thing I said when I found out that Michael [Fassbender] was [playing Edward Rochester] was, ‘He’s a man!’ ‘I’ve only acted with boys before, but he’s a man!’” Though when he arrived on the red carpet a few minutes later she remarked, “Now, he feels just like a kid to me.”
Indeed, Fassbender lit up the red carpet, constantly joking with director Cary Fukunaga. When asked why he was attracted to the role, he responded, “Well,” (throwing Fukunaga a sideways glance) “He kind of attracted me a little bit.” Then, as if on queue, Fukunaga pulled out a letter bearing a Valentines-y design from the inside pocket of his impeccably sharp suit. “It’s a love letter,” he said, handing it to Fassbender. Does he do this for all of his stars? “No, just the ones I like,” he replied. Unfortunately, both refused to divulge its contents.
Jokes aside, Fassbender was all business at the premiere, seeing the complete film for the first time and then rushing off to continue work on his upcoming project, Shame, directed by Steve McQueen (the pair also teamed up for 2008’s Hunger).
The screening room was packed to the gills (with everyone from producers to Zoe Kravitz—Fassbender’s rumored girlfriend) when James Schamus, CEO of Focus Features introduced the movie and addressed the myriad screen adaptations of Jane Eyre, joking, “If the Academy has proved anything, it’s that people never get tired of English accents.”
The film opens to a long, visually stunning stretch as Jane wanders the countryside alone—a real testament to her ability to hold the screen without any dialogue. The audience also gets a first look at Wasikowska’s corseted costumes, “I kept complaining about the corset with Alice [in Wonderland] and I didn’t realize how unnecessary that was until I got into the Jane corset, which was absolutely painful,” she says. Though with a waist as impossibly tiny as hers, it’s hard to imagine what was left to nip in.
The story moves back and forth in time, (special commendation should also be given to the Amelia Clarkson, who is every bit as captivating as the young Jane) and it is clear from the beginning that this is going to be a dark film—both in coloration and in tone. Fassbender is appropriately tormented-yet-vulnerable and manages scene-stealing intensity even in the more tender moments with Jane.
There were a few points of levity (many delivered by the wonderful, but under-utilized Dame Judi Dench), though there were more than a few tense instances where a sudden horror-movie-style surprise made the audience jump (some mid-sip of Moet).
To lighten the mood on set, Wasikowska, a former ballet dancer, was overheard mentioning that she would tap dance with Fassbender between takes; though he insists that he doesn’t have anywhere near her amount of rhythm.
After the screening, the party moved upstairs to the Tribeca Grand bar—a quick location switch from the SoHo Grand where the roof apparently sprang a leak during the evening’s rain—and Wasikowska (who was overheard mentioning that she forgoes the Hollywood party scene) refreshingly (and somewhat surprisingly) opted for a bottle of Stella rather than a dainty glass of champagne.

Mia Wasikowska hit red carpet at the New York premiere of her new film ‘Jane Eyre’ hels at the Tribeca Grand Hotel. 21-year-old Alice In Wonderland star was positively glowing in a ruffled dress teamed with chic heels.
Hollywood’s newest star looked demure in a chic ruffled black dress by Elie Saab couture teamed with black patent leather “Wagner” pumps from Brian Atwood. She looked every bit the Hollywood movie star in tea length frock that featured a boat neck, defined waist and full skirt.
She kept her makeup dewy, sported minimal jewelry and opted for a simple yet chic updo. Mia was joined by her costar Michael Fassbender and the film’s director Cary Fukunaga on the Jane Eyre red carpet premiere event, sponsored by W magazine, Saab and Focus Features.
Jane Eyre is a dark re-imagination of the classic story about a mousy governess (played by Mia Wasikowska) who softens the heart of her employer and discovers that he’s hiding a terrible secret.

Water leak puts a damper on Jane Eyre party
by Shazy | 12:52 PM
The Alice In Wonderland star takes on the title role in the new adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's classic novel, opposite Michael Fassbender and Dame Judi Dench.
The film was screened for a celebrity-packed audience, including Glenn Close and Zoe Kravitz, at Manhattan's Tribeca Grand Hotel and guests were invited to enjoy an afterparty at the Soho Grand.
But plans were thrown into chaos when it was revealed the bar at the Soho Grand had been flooded by a burst water pipe.
A source tells New York Post gossip column Page Six that the banquet manager at the Soho Grand, Victor Ryan, ran down the street to break the bad news to studio press agents, telling them, "You cannot have your party at the Soho... there's a waterfall from the ceiling showering the entire bar. The room is now under two inches of water."
Organisers had to switch venues at the last minute and ended up hosting the bash at the Tribeca Grand instead.

Talk carpet: Jane Eyre⦠and Sebastian Stan?
Fassy, Mia and Cary Fukunaga at the NYC premiere
I MUST get to this movie this weekend. If Michael Fassbender as Mr Rochester and Mia Wasikowska as Jane Eyre weren't enough impetus, there are the fine reviews to consider, and Cary Fukunaga in the director's chair. (About that expression: How often do directors actually sit down? I always picture them walking around shouting orders and talking with their hands.) His debut feature Sin Nombre suggested that he was one to watch and he'd also have to go on the imaginary Calendar of Hottest Movie Directors ...though that's neither here nor there.
Did you see Jane Eyre (2011) last night or do you have to wait it out a bit? If not, what did you see / are you going to see this weekend?
These celebrities were also at the premiere to soak in the 29th film version of Charlotte Brontë's classic.
I always wonder why certain celebrities show up at certain things. What's the connection here? None of these people were in Cary Fukunaga's movie or this one. But here's what we imagine as connections: Alan Cumming is also, like Fassy, an X-Man, albeit not in the same installment; Debra Winger and Glenn Close came out to present themselves as cautionary tales for Mia, saying 'Gargantuan talent isn't everything. Win your Oscar* early early early or it never comes"; Rose Byrne is Fassbender's co-star in X-Men: First Class and she goes everywhere Glenn Close goes (at least in the public imagination now thanks to Damages); Sebastian Stan just came out to confuse us since he looks like so many other people.
About Sebs, I know it's probably not the role I'm supposed to associate with him but I have fondness because of his amusing Hathaway-Hate in Rachel Getting Married (2008).
"Walter" just couldn't play nice with others!
His bit in Black Swan was also incisively wrought. Loved that tetchy 'I can't be bothered to disguise my boredom. It's ballet! I'm just here to get laid' look when the ballerina's day jobs came up. Maybe he's a great actor disguised as an interchangeably good-looking up-and-comer? He is from Romania and they do make good cinema. Yeah, yeah, I know he's also on TV but I can't watch everything.
Captain America and Bucky
Is he good on his TV shows? You tell me. We'll see him next as "Bucky" Robin to Captain America: The First Avenger's Batman as it were.
*I've said this before but it's always worth repeating: The Eighties were BRUTAL for great actresses. Isn't it the single decade (post silent films obvs) with the most never-won-the-Oscar important female stars?
Great classic films, best all time movies

'Eyre' heads to New York
Cold weather won't keep stars away
By Peggy Truong
Maybe Charlotte Bronte ordered up the weather. Right in character, Mia Wasikowska braved the cold and windy New York weather for a special Mar. 9 screening of "Jane Eyre."
The evening played out at the Tribeca Grand Hotel, where the 21-year-old actress was joined by director Cary Fukunaga, producers Alison Owen and Paul Trijbits and co-star Michael Fassbender, who plays the dashing Mr. Rochester in the new Focus Features pic.
"We countered the intensity of the material with a lot of goofing around," said Wasikowska. "There was a lot of tap dancing and other things I can't even remember. It was just that kind of punch-drunk fun."
Still, Fukunaga made sure his cast kept it together once the cameras rolled. "You've got to bring them back in," he said. "But we're all a bunch of kids just running around with a 160-year-old text, pretending we're adults."
While Judi Dench, who portrays the loveable Mrs. Fairfax in the film, didn't make it to the screening, she was definitely a popular subject on the red carpet. "She's not a diva, by any means. She's so chill," said Fukunaga. "Completely disarming. She makes jokes, sometimes dirty. But she was a complete pro."
Fassbender, who's been in town filming "Shame" with Carey Mulligan and Nicole Beharie, took a quick break from that pic to attend the festivities.
"I didn't read 'Jane Eyre' for school but my sister and mum were big fans," said Fassbender. "They would always talk about it and I was never really into it to be honest."
The screening and party, also at the Tribeca Grand, brought out guests that included Alan Cumming, Zoe Kravitz, Focus Features' Andrew Karpen and James Schamus, Glenn Close and Rose Byrne, who stars with Fassbender in the upcoming "X-Men" prequel.
"I'm really curious to see his Rochester," said Byrne. "I'll just be gushing the whole time!"
