Inglourious Basterds

The rest of the cast gave very good performances especially Michael Fassbender, Diane Kruger and Daniel Brühl. See, the best performers are European and most speak their original language and easily -and very credibly in the story- switch to English. I like this as to me reflects real life in Europe.

But nonetheless, the cast is terrific including Diane Kruger, Eli Roth, Mike Myers, B.J. Novak, the wonderful Melanie Laurent and the always magnificent Michael Fassbender.

Pitt is neither as amazing as some sources have suggested, nor as terrible as others have claimed. Perhaps he hams it up a bit too much, and, while he certainly has his fair share of hilarious moments, he’s upstaged as soon as Michael Fassbender arrives on the scene. Fassbender isn’t known for his comic acting, but he is brilliant as the film-critic-cum-SAS-commando Archie Hicox. One of my few reservations about the film is that he doesn’t get the screen time he deserves.

Michael Fassbender is going to turn me into a big wreck every time I see him now. If that man does not get the power of the scene to cut right into a person, I resign.

The rest of the cast all do sterling work but special praise must go to Michael Fassbender and Mike Myers for their only scene together – a wonderfully played military briefing which is hilarious, although it could be a litmus test for those who love or hate this film.

Those expecting guns and shootouts and whatnot will be disappointed, as it’s not as violent as we’re led to believe, but that’s okay too because the movie works better in its quieter moments. These moments usually star Christoph Waltz but there’s one stonker of scene where he’s absent - just wait for the tavern scene - where Michael Fassbender’s tally-ho English officer poses as a German officer.

Pitt might be the marquee name but he’s part of an ensemble cast. If Fassbender was given more screen time he might have outshone Waltz, but the Austrian actor makes the film his own.

You'll watch this movie for one of three reasons, I'm sure:

3) You've heard about the fine performances. Eli Roth is slightly miscast, though he has so much fun in his role, it's forgivable. Michael Fassbender is so smooth and cool, you'll wish there was more of him.

4. Michael Fassbender At first I barely recognized Fassbender since he wasn't emaciated and making me cringe with every shallow breath he took like he did in Hunger. But once I got over that initial shock, I was impressed by just how funny he was riffing on the stereotypical British "stiff upper lip" humour. Talk about doing it all--I'm excited to see what he does next.

I’m compelled to throw in props to Michael Fassbender for doing such a great job channelling David Niven and George Sanders with his tally-ho, cheerio and well-met German film critic-slash-British commando spy.

I wanted his scenes to keep on going – he’s that compelling to watch. His performance as Bobby Sands in Hunger was outstanding. Mike Myers as the veddy-English general was fun, too. Not exactly someone you’d expect to see in a Tarantino flick, huh?

Quentin Tarantino is also back with his first exploration of the war genre, and if the trailer is anything to go by, it promises to be as irreverent, funny and explosive as the rest of his career. In fact, the director describes “Inglorious Basterds” as a spaghetti western with war iconography. Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Daniel Brühl’s careers could experience a big push after it.

The cast was excellent with Michael Fassbender as a particular standout with his British army captain looking and sounding uncannily like a young Laurence Olivier, top notch.

Another actor worth mentioning is Michael Fassbender, whose appearance is brief (in Tarantino terms, a solid half hour of screen-time is brief), but commands the viewers attention the entire time he is present.

The real piece to chew on is the rendezvous in the tavern basement. Lt. Archie Hicox (Michael Fassbender) could be seen as an additional character just thrown into the mix because Brad Pitt’s Lt. Aldo Raine is a boorish backwater slob.

Fassbender, to his credit, is cool, collected, charming and almost Wolf-like (Tarantino fans will get the reference). He’s the perfect spy and talks his way out of brilliant pickle until he makes that one final mistake.

Now Tarantino has helped us all embrace the brilliance of Michael Fassbender, Mélanie Laurent, Daniel Brühl and, if there is any justice, the next Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz.

The titular Basterds occupy just one storyline of the film, and it’s easily the least compelling. Brad Pitt gets top billing as a redneck commander of a squad whose only goal is to kill Nazis and take as many scalps along the way as possible, but it’s Michael Fassbender as Lt. Archie Hicox and Eli Roth as a fearsome baseball bat-wielding slaughterer known as the Bear Jew who make the biggest impression.

Also, I would like to thank you for introducing me to Michael Fassbender who played Lt. Hicox. Fassbender was great in his ten minutes of time and since I’ve never experienced this fine actor before, I say thank you.

Inglourious Basterds: For two hours, including brilliantly paced moments with Christoph Waltz and Michael Fassbender, Quentin Tarantino built scene upon tense scene.

I think the Best Supporting could go instead to Michael Fassbender, whose performance as Lieutenant Archie Hicox was exquisitely entertaining.

However, it should be noted that in addition to the inimitable Christoph Waltz, Melanie Laurent (all sad eyes and vengeance as Shoshanna), Michael Fassbender (dapper as Lt. Archie Hicox) and Brad Pitt (in a just world, his work as Lt. Aldo Raine would be getting some Best Actor consideration) all turn in exemplary work

Another performance, which I think was a bit overlooked, that I enjoyed was that of Michael Fassbender as Lt. Archie Hicox. A lieutenant working for the Brits, a former film critic as well. He does a wonderful job in portraying this character even though he isn't around for much time.
