Jane Eyre grabs four more

Judi Dench, Sally Hawkins, Jamie Bell and Imogen Poots are all in the middle of negotiations to be part of the growing cast for the novel adaptation of Jane Eyre. The feature stars Mia Wasikowska as the young governess Jane Eyre who falls in love with her employer, Edward Rochester (Michael Fassbender), but discovers he harbors a dark secret.

The BBC Films and Focus Features flick is being directed by Cary Fukunaga, while the adapted screenplay from the novel done by Charlotte Bronte is written by Moira Buffini. Here’s a little more information below on what each of the actors will be playing within the feature.

Bell will play St. John, a clergyman who turns out to be Eyre’s cousin. Dench will play Mrs. Fairfax, the housekeeper of Thornfield Manor, who disapproves of Eyre’s engagement with Rochester. Hawkins is Mrs. Reed, Eyre’s aunt, who adopts her but abuses and neglects her until death (THR).

Cary Fukunaga's 'Jane Eyre' Attracts Jamie Bell, Judi Dench, Sally Hawkins & Imogen Poots

What a great line up this is turning out to be. Jamie Bell, Dame Judi Dench, Sally Hawkins and Imogen Poots are all in talks to join the cast of Cary Fukunaga's "Jane Eyre," according to THR.

The talented quartet will star alongside Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska who will lead Fukunaga's take on Charlotte Bronte's classic tale of the titular young governess (Wasikowska) who falls in love with her employer (Fassbender) but discovers he harbors a dark secret.

Bell will play St. John Rivers, Eyre's clergyman cousin; Dench will play Mrs. Fairfax, the housekeeper of Thornfield Manor who disapproves of Eyre's engagement with Rochester; Hawkins will portray Eyre's aunt Mrs. Reed who adopts her but abuses and neglects her; while Poots' role is currently unknown.

Fukunaga has some serious talent at his disposal here with his version apparently playing up the gothic qualities of the novel from a script by playwright Moira Buffini — who's also behind Stephen Frears' graphic novel adaptation of "Tamara Drewe." Ellen Page was once attached to the project before Fukunaga came on board, but quite frankly, Wasikowska and Fassbender make a much better duo than any one we could imagine Page with.

Alison Owen and Paul Trijbits of Ruby Films are producing 'Eyre' with BBC Films and Focus, who handled Fukunaga's 2009 effort "Sin Nombre." The picture is set to begin shooting in March and it seems like potential 2010 Oscar-bait if they can turn it around fast enough.

Cary Fukunaga’s ‘Jane Eyre’ Adaptation Adds To Cast
Posted on 11 February 2010 by Kristen Coates in News

Ever since Cary Fukunaga (writer/director of Sin Nombre) announced that he would be directing an adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Erye, many have been anxiously awaiting to see the project take form.

In November, it was announced that Mia Wasikowska (Amelia, Alice in Wonderland) would be playing the role of Jane Eyre, and Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds, Fish Tank) would be playing the role of Rochester. In the novel, Jane is a young, plain governess, who falls for her older employer, only to discover he is harboring a dark secret.

Now it appears that Judi Dench, Jamie Bell, Sally Hawkins and Imogen Poots are in negotiations to join the cast. Dench (Nine, Quantum of Solace) will play Mrs. Fairfax, the housekeeper of Thornfield Manor who hires Jane, and disproves of Jane’s relationship with Rochester. Bell (Defiance, Billy Elliot) will play St. John, a young clergyman who helps Jane in a time of need, and turns out to be connected to her by blood. Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky, An Education) will play Mrs. Reed, Jane’s terrible aunt, who terrorizes and abuses Jane as a orphaned child. Poots’ (Me and Orson Welles, V for Vendetta) role is currently unknown.

Jane Eyre has been the subject of several film adaptations including most recently by Franco Zeffirelli in 1996 starring Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Alison Owen and Paul Trijbits of Ruby Films are producing ‘Eyre’ with BBC Films and Focus Features. Shooting is set to begin in March, with a release most likely in 2011.

What do you think of these new cast additions?

Jane Eyre 2011 cast continues to take shape. . .

*Hat-tip to BronteBlog*.

Several new names have been reported in connection with Jane Eyre 2011 in the Hollywood Reporter:
Cranford

Dame Judi Dench as Mrs. Fairfax;

Jamie Bell as St John Rivers;

Sally Hawkins as Mrs. Reed;

and Imogen Poots - probably as Blanche Ingram.

My thoughts: Judi Dench as Mrs. Fairfax - awesome! :-D

I don't know much about Jamie Bell, but he looks about right for the part of St John - his blond, boyish looks should contrast well with Michael Fassbender's darker, rougher features.

Sally Hawkins as Mrs. Reed is an interesting choice, to say the least! Sally is a great actress, and will no doubt pull it off, but I have to say my first thoughts were that she seems way too young, thin, and attractive to play Mrs. Reed!

Imogen Poots - pleeeease, not another blonde Blanche Ingram!! Blanche is described in the book as being dark, exotic, and very tall. In almost all of the movie adaptations I have seen, she is portrayed as the stereotypical mean, dumb, blonde villainess. *Heavy sigh*. Let's hope that Miss Poots has actually been cast as Rosamund Oliver, NOT Blanche Ingram.

Classic Casting: "Jane Eyre" Ensemble Growing

Just say the name "Jane Eyre" and you can feel eyes rolling and hear deep, huffy sighs. This is Hollywood, people, not tenth grade English class. So when we heard Charlotte Bronte's classic novel was being adapted for the screen--again--we were less than enthused.

But now that we know Cary Fukunaga is directing, we're all in.

Fukunaga’s first film, "Sin Nombre," which he wrote and directed, was one of the best, most tragically ignored movies of 2009. In fact, we can't think of a more impressive debut by a filmmaker in the last decade. If Fukunaga's on the job, this adaptation of "Jane Eyre," part of a multi-picture deal he was signed to by Focus Features when the studio picked up his stunning first feature at Sundance in 2009, is going to be outstanding.

"Alice in Wonderland" star Mia Wasikowska has already been cast as Jane Eyre and Michael Fassbender as the employer she falls in love with only to discover he harbors a dark secret. And yesterday THR announced that Jamie Bell, Dame Judi Dench and Sally Hawkins are in negotiations to join the cast as well.

Bell will play St. John, a clergyman who turns out to be Eyre's cousin, Dench will play Mrs. Fairfax, the housekeeper of Thornfield Manor, who disapproves of Eyre's engagement with Rochester, and Hawkins is Mrs. Reed, Eyre's aunt, who adopts her but abuses and neglects her until death.

Billy Elliott, multiple Oscar winners, Alice, an Inglorious Basterd and the man who directed a movie so beautiful we wept; these are the makings of a truly great cinematic experience. High School English never sounded so good.

Four Actors Circle Jane Eyre Adaptation
February 11th, 2010

Jamie Bell and Imogen Poots are in talks to join the Jane Eyre adaption
A new adaptation of a Charlotte Bronte classic could have four new additions to the cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jamie Bell, Judi Dench, Sally Hawkins and Imogen Poots are in negotiations to join the cast of Jane Eyre.

If they join the cast, Bell would portray St. John, a clergyman cousin of Eyre, Dench will play Mrs. Fairfax, Thornfield Manor's housekeeper, Hawkins will play Mrs. Reed, Eyre's abusive aunt and it wasn't clear what role Poots would play.

Cary Fukunaga is directing and Mia Wasikowska will play the title character and Michael Fassbender has also been cast as Edward Rochester, Eyre's employer who she falls in love with but later discovers is hiding a dark secret.

It wasn't clear when production would start on the film.

New casting adds:

http://theplaylist.blogspot.com/2010/03/rob-cohen-remakes-monster-squad.html

Holliday Grainger (of the upcoming film, "Bel Ami" starring Robert Pattinson) and Tamzin Merchant ("Pride & Prejudice") have joined the cast of Cary Fukunaga's "Jane Eyre" adaptation. The film already boasts a stellar cast; Mia Wasikowska ("Alice in Wonderland") and Michael Fassbender ("Inglourious Basterds") and the rest of the cast is filled out by fantastic U.K. actors like Judi Dench, Sally Hawkins ("Happy Go-Lucky"), Jamie Bell and up-and-comer Imogen Poots ("Cracked"). Funkunaga will again use his "Sin Nombre" cinematographer Adriano Goldman and the film will begin shooting on next week in the U.K.
