Soderbergh’s Knockout Retitled Haywire, Release Possibly Set For January 2011

haywire-new-cast
Steven Soderbergh’s action thriller Knockout, starring MMA fighter Gina Carano and a hell of a supporting cast, has evidently been given a new title. The picture is now called Haywire, and looks to be set for release in January 2011 by LionsGate.
The Playlist collated a set of tweets (from Soderbergh’s wife Jules Asner and Rich Eisen) that talk about one of the first screenings of the film. In attendance were Asner, Eisen and seemingly Sasha Grey, who was in Soderbergh’s The Girlfriend Experience. They mention Haywire as the title, and Eisen says the film hits in January. The latter detail in particular may be subject to change, but whenever we do see the film, expect it to be called Haywire.
One other point about the film that we didn’t report when it took place: while Dennis Quaid was set to play a role, he ended up having to drop out at the last minute and was replaced by Bill Paxton. I can deal with that just fine; given the type of movie I expect this to be, Paxton probably fits right in.
That makes the supporting cast look like this: Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Michael Angarano, Mathieu Kassovitz and Paxton. That is one hell of a lineup for an action-based spy thriller that centers on a performance by an actress with no real prior feature experience.
In the film Carano plays a black ops soldier who is betrayed during a mission, but survives to seek revenge. Lem Dobbs (The Limey) wrote the script, in which the cast listed above play a variety of friendly and antagonistic roles, from members of Carano’s team to her betrayers and higher-ups. Most of that detail can pretty easily be found online, but I’ll leave it out here. If you want the spoilers you can track them down pretty easily.
More than anything else, I’m looking forward to seeing what sort of action is in the picture. Most of the big studio action films have been dull and boring of late, edited to withing an inch of breathing room and too shaky to appreciate whatever skills might be on display. With Carano as the centerpiece, hopefully Soderbergh has clearly captured some action worth watching.

Steven Soderbergh’s KNOCKOUT Gets a New Title and a Release Date
The title to Steven Soderberg’s new action thriller Knockout, has been changed to Haywire, and the film is set to be released by Lionsgate in January 2011. Haywire stars female MMA fighter Cina Carano and has a incredible cast of actors that is sure to make this one hell of a great film.
The supporting cast of this film includes Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Michael Angarano, Mathieu Kassovitz and Bill Paxton.
The movie is basically going to be a bad-ass action-spy thriller. The character that Carano plays is named Mallory Kane, a black ops soldier that is double crossed by a member of her team. Kane then goes on a mission to uncover who has set her up to take the fall for a job that goes bad and involves a murder.
Michael Douglas plays a government official in the film. Fassbender plays a member of Kane’s commando spy unit. The role for Fassbender was actually written with him in mind. And McGregor plays the owner of a Blackwater private military company.
I’m looking forward to this movie. Steven Soderbergh is a great director, and I think he is going to give us something very fun and very unique with his next film.

Steven Soderbergh's Spy Thriller, 'Knockout,' Becomes 'Haywire' & Now Set For A January 2011 Release
When we first reported about Steven Soderbergh's spy thriller, "Knockout" starring mixed martial arts champion Gina Carano, we did say the title of the film was a working one and would probably change, did we not?
And change it has. According to tweets by Jules Asner, Soderbergh's wife, and other tweets and message board reports at a recent screening, the film is now titled, "Haywire" and has been set for a January 2011 release.
The film has an incredible supporting cast including Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender ("Inglourious Basterds," "Hunger"), Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton (who made a last minute sub-in for Dennis Quaid who had to drop out), Michael Angarano, French actor and director Mathieu Kassovitz ("Amelie," Spielberg's "Munich").
The film centers on a black ops soldier (Carano) who seeks revenge after she is betrayed and set up during a mission. We read the Lem Dobbs-penned script earlier this year and it is no frills, taut and lean to the bone at just over 90 pages; a riveting and sharp read.
If the picture is screening, has a title and is scheduled, it sounds like it's basically done and awaiting its release by Lionsgate. The action thriller was shot all over the world including Barcelona, New Mexico and Dublin.
Next up for Soderbergh is the Scott Z. Burns-written virus thriller "Contagion" which is scheduled to shoot this fall in 3D and features an amazing all-star cast that includes Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard and Laurence Fishburne. Warner Bros. has already given it a October 21, 2011 release date.

Well, with the news, it's now pushed from August of this year, to January.
I didn't think they'd have the film ready by August, anyways.
But it could play in festivals, and I know there are a few in Ireland that run during the fall.

Soderbergh’s KNOCKOUT Is Now Titled HAYWIRE, Scheduled To Arrive In January 2011

I don’t know producers or studios or filmmakers sometimes decide on changing their title from something that sounds cool to something that sound any less. Cause to me, there’s nothing wrong with the word KNOCKOUT, it’s appropriate for action or thriller flicks but alas, according to ThePlaylist, that director Steven Soderbergh’s highly anticipated project starring MMA star Gina Carano, now has a new title,.. HAYWIRE, which will be released by Lionsgate in January 2011. That’s ground for concerns to me, it’s a Soderbergh’s movie for pete’s sake, what the hell is it doing in the month of January where crappy movies are dumped. Unless the intention is to have it open in limited theaters nearing the end of the year and it would expand in January…
Gina Carano plays Mallory Kane, a tough girl a solid background and was raised around military honor and academia. She leaves the military to go to work for a Blackwater-esque company to make better money and then is eventually betrayed by one of her teammates. She seeks to uncover who has set her up to take the fall for a job that goes bad and involves a murder.
Michael Douglas plays a government figure who ultimately proves to be an ally
Ewan McGregor plays the owner of the Blackwater-type special ops team (and once a romantic interest to the lead) is involved in making Kane take the fall
Michael Fassbender plays a member of Kane’s commando spy unit, an untrustworthy teammate.
Bill Paxton plays Kane’s father.
Channing Tatum will play one of the elite specialists on Carano’s team named Aaron, “a military gearhead-type who’s sent to try and bring her back in once she’s been double-crossed and gone rogue; trying to figure out who exactly is setting her up”.
Antonio Banderas will play the head of a Black-ops European unit.
The composer of Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven movies, David Holmes, will be writing the score.
Here’s a funny fact that the website discovered.. turns out, all those male supporting roles were initially offered to several Action movie stars but guess what.. “they were not very comfortable in a supporting role where a woman beats them senseless” Damn those action stars go too much pride.

Knockout has changed to Haywire
Posted on 13. Jun, 2010 by John in Featured, Movie News
Steven Sodrebergh is hard at work on his next film starring MMA fighter Gina Carano and a great supporting cast. The film has been titled once again as Haywire. The film is expected to hit theaters on January 2011 by Lionsgate.
There have been several screenings of the film and it has got a good vibe from distributors. The film will be hitting in January. Dennis Quaid was part of the cast. But he dropped out in the last minute. Now the cast is filled with some great faces.
Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Michael Angarano, Mathieu Kassovitz and Bill Paxton are all part of this beautiful cast. This is going to be a major showdown. It is an action based spy thriller that centers on a performance by an actress with no real prior feature experience. But she can really pack a punch.
Carano plays a black ops soldier who is betrayed during a mission, but survives to seek revenge. The film is written by the man behind who wrote The Limey. So the huge cast will be mix of people who are friendly with her or antagonists.
But what will matter in this film it will be the action that will play the most important role. Now with Carano in the center of the film it is surely going to be an action extravaganza.

The face of woman’s MMA, Gina Carano’s movie debut in Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Haywire’ (formerly known as ‘Knockout’) is now complete and is expected to be released in January, 2011.
The spy thriller features Carano in the lead role with an all-star cast including Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum and Bill Paxton.
The finished movie was shown to a select group of people recently, one of whom was American TV journalist Rich Eisen who appeared impressed with what he saw.
“Saw the new Soderbergh movie “Haywire” the other night. Comes out in January. Already can’t wait to see it again. It’s THAT good,” he said on his twitter account.
While that’s certainly positive news for the MMA superstar, it’s worth noting that in the movie world January is generally seen as the dumping ground for bad movies and future box-office flops.
Meanwhile there is still no word on if and when Carano might return to mixed martial arts competition. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker recently admitted that he had not heard from her since she left to shoot the movie and could not pinpoint when she may return.
In this instance I fear that no news is bad news. Since her loss to Cris Cyborg back in August of last year the star has given no indication that she will return to the sport that made her famous.

Knockout Gets A New Name And Release Date
15 June 2010
The Steven Soderbergh helmed, Dublin shot action film previously titled Knockout, has had a name change; it will now be called Haywire, and will be released in America in January, via Lionsgate. According to The Playlist, Soderbergh is apparently locked on the film, and has been screening it in LA.
Starring Mixed Martial Artist, Gina Carano as a former special ops solider, who seeks revenge after she is screwed over in the middle of a mission. Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Bill Paxton, Michael Fassbender and Mathieu Kassovitz offer incredibly starry support, in what sounds like a really fun flick.
The Playlist have read the script, and have raved about it. Throw in an Oscar winning director, a fledging action star and THAT supporting cast and we should really be in for a treat.

Knockout Goes Haywire
The Playlist reports (via Dark Horizons) that Steven Soderbergh's all-star spy thriller Knockout, starring mixed martial arts sensation Gina Carano, has undergone a title change. Instead of being known by the undeniably cool (and appropriate) title of Knockout, it will now be known by the decidedly forgetable and generic title of Haywire, for reasons presumably known only to the director and the studio, Lionsgate. Oh well; I'm still looking forward to it. To compensate for his star's lack of acting experience, Soderbergh has stocked the supporting cast with top-tier talent including Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton and Mathieu Kassovitz. If those names alone weren't already enough to get spy fans excited, there are also the requisite exotic locations, which include Barcelona, Dublin and New Mexico... all of which (entirely coincidentally, I'm sure) offer significant tax breaks for filming... but are still cool settings! Knockout, er, Haywire (ugh), is set to bow in January, with an eye to that post-Oscar season Taken money.
