Michael Fassbender: Choice Between Spider Man and X Men
By: Roger Friedman in Movies // June 8th, 2010 at 12:07 AM EDT

Michael Fassbender had a hot year last year, in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds,” and in Steve McQueen’s “The Hunger.”

He also proved himself a good dancer in Cannes with Robin Wright Penn at the big “Basterds” party.

Now Fassbender is in–as his “Basterds” David Nivenish character might say, a bit of a pickle.

He’s being pursued, I hear, for two different Marvel comics movies. Matthew Vaughn is said to want him for “X Men: First Class.” Fassbender would play young Professor X, played in the first three films by Ian McKellen.

At the same time, Fassbender is being pursued to play the villain in “Spider Man 4,” aka “No Toby Maguire Here.”

Two different movies from Marvel, but two different studios: Fox for the first, and Columbia for the second. He can’t do both.

Either way, Fassbender can’t lose. He’s got four films coming out in 2010 alone including “Jonah Hex.” By the time he’s a supercomic villain, he’ll be a bona fide movie star.

Michael Fassbender Deciding Between The Reboots: ‘X-Men: First Class’ or ‘Spider-Man’
Posted on 08 June 2010 by Jordan Raup in News

Showbiz is reporting that breakout star Michael Fassbender (Hunger, Inglourious Basterds, Jonah Hex, Fish Tank, Centurion) has to decide between two roles: young Magneto in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class or the villain in Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot. Not a bad place to be stuck in.

I think Showbiz has their facts wrong as they say Professor X, but James McAvoy has been signed on to play the role in First Class. I can only assume they mean young Magneto or Eric Lehnsherr, previously played by Ian McKellen. I absolutely love Fassbender’s work and I’m so glad he is getting these major opportunities. They are both projects helmed by great directors so I’m excited to see what he picks.

X-Men: First Class starts production this summer in London for a June 3rd, 2011 release.

Spider-Man will start production later this year for a July 3, 2012 release.

What should Fassbender choose?

Could Michael Fassbender Steal Professor X From James McAvoy?
By Josh Tyler: 2010-06-07 23:29:04

Could Michael Fassbender Steal Professor X From James McAvoy? About a year ago a Fox entertainment reporter named Roger Friedman actively encouraged his readers to pirate Fox’s new movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Fox (wisely) fired him and, somehow, this has resulted in some sort of direct pipeline into the inner workings of all Fox’s X-Men movies for Friedman. Yep, Roger Friedman, has another X-Men scoop. Suspicious? You bet.

Friedman says Michael Fassbender, whom you probably know best as the dashing Brit in Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds could be up for a role in X-Men: First Class. Here’s where this gets really weird. He says he’s up for the part of a young Charles Xavier. It’s weird, not because Fassbender wouldn’t be good (he would be), but because the role already went to James McAvoy.

The trades reported that McAvoy had the role just a couple of weeks ago. This either means he’s been fired or Roger Friedman is so completely out of touch he doesn’t even know how to properly fake a story. I really want it to be the latter, but the former seems just as possible.

Friedman also claims that Fassbender is being pursued by Sony for a role in their upcoming Spider-Man reboot. He’s play the villain, though no word on who that villain would be. This is at least slightly more plausible since, you know, that part hasn’t been given to someone else yet.

omigosh, people haven't stopped talking about this deal. I can't keep up with twitter and everyone talking about Michael and these roles.

It's kind of cool. Whichever one he takes, if he takes one of them, I will be buying my Comic Con ticket for 2011 Smile

X-Men Updates: First Class Courting Michael Fassbender for Magneto, and Filming Locations in Michigan

Posted on Tuesday, June 8th, 2010 by Russ Fischer

X-Men: First Class is slowly casting up. James McAvoy is on board as the young Charles Xavier, adn there’s the word that director Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson is going to play a role. Spider-Man shortlist actor Frank Dillane may also be up for a role.

Now there’s a report that Vaughn and Fox have a Magneto in mind: Michael Fassbender of Inglourious Basterds and Hunger. (And of quite a few upcoming films, too.) In addition, we’ve got some news on locations that are being sought in Michigan, which may give you some idea of what to expect from the film.

Showbiz 411 says that Vaughn wants Fassbender for Magneto, and it’s a great idea. He’d be top-class casting for the part, and could be made up to look enough like Ian McKellen that he’d not be too jarring a transition as we look at the younger version of the character.

There’s a problem, however: the site also reports that he’s being pursued to play the bad guy in Sony’s Spider-Man reboot. The idea is that he can only do one or the other, so which one will it be? I’m pretty much rooting for Magneto, but in part that’s because we don’t know who he’d play in Spider-Man. What does it suggest about the bad guy there that Fassbender might play him?

Additionally, MTV noticed a West Michigan Film Office alert that reports Fox is scouting locations for first class. Here’s the note:

A location scout is seeking out areas with a 1960’s, South-American or Central American island feel for the next X-Men movie, ‘X-Men: First Class.’ In particular, he needs to find cafe and bar locations, evoking the Argentinian feel of Bariloche, and an Art Deco Cafe or restaurant overlooking a body of water. Additionally, the movie calls for a Miami styled harbor for yachts. If you know of any locations that seem to match a description, please contact our office.

So, is Magneto meant to be hiding out in South or Central America after WWII? Classic continuity has he and Xavier meeting in Israel, then having a falling out, which Magneto escapes with Nazi gold to fund his dream of mutant freedom. Does the film feature Magneto building strength in South America?

Everyone Wants Michael Fassbender, ‘First Class’ Actor

Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on June 8, 2010 Share

Michael Fassbender, known for his incredible talent and his performance in Inglorious Basterds and Hunger, may play the younger version of Ian McKellan’s Magneto in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class. He might also take a walk over to the Sony lot and star in Spider-Man 4, playing the villain for director Marc Webb. He may do none of these things. Just know that if he does them, he will do them well.

Showbiz 411 is the origin of this news, which hit the web today and immediately ignited fires in the pants of any comic book geek familiar with Fassbender’s work. X-Men: First Class has already cast one of its leads — James McAvoy will play Professor Charles Xavier — and as it speeds toward a UK shoot in coming weeks, its likely that they are down to making offers for Magneto.

As for the Spider-Man reboot, it is also gearing up for a shoot later this year or very early next year. We heard rumblings yesterday that Jamie Bell had been offered the role of the webslinging hero, leading us to believe that offers might be going out soon for other roles. There’s no word on who the villain will be in the new Spider-Man. But again, if it’s Fassbender, it’s going to be interesting.

Michael Fassbender Trying to Choose Between Villain Roles in X-Men: First Class and the Spider-Man Reboot

By Kevin Coll • June 8, 2010

One of my favorite actors that is up and coming is choosing between two superhero villains for his next film project. Showbiz 411 is reporting that the Inglourious Basterds star Michael Fassbender is being courted for roles in both X-Men: First Class and the Untitled Spider-Man Reboot.

The site reports that Fox wants Fassbender to portray a young Magneto in X-Men: First Class alongside James McAvoy, who will play the young Charles Xavier/Professor X. While Columbia wants Fassbender to portray the main villain in the Untitled Spider-Man Reboot, although the site didn’t reveal what specific character that villain would be.

While both are Marvel films, both are at obviously different studios and Fassbender won’t be able to do both films due to his schedule and will have to choose between the projects. Man what a choice to make, personally I’d go with the Spider-man role but we’ll be sure to keep you posted on any further developments in his predicament.

I going to speculate that the Spider-man villain role is Norman Osbourne. I know it seems like the same movie as the first but trust me when I say that he is a lot more devious and bad in the Ultimate Spider-man storyline that they are “supposedly” following. The again there is some other main villains that pop up in the first few issues like Kingpin, his henchmen, Electrode and even Doc Ock and its all one engrossing storyline.

X-Men: First Class comes to theaters June 3rd, 2011 and stars James McAvoy. The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn. Untitled Spider-Man Reboot comes to theaters July 3rd, 2012. The film is directed by Marc Webb.

Michael Fassbender Torn Between 'Spider-Man' Reboot and 'First Class'
Add Comment
June 09, 2010 02:46:50 GMT

He is reportedly wanted to play the new Spider-Man's enemy, but Matthew Vaughn is said to be approaching him to portray Magneto.

It seems that Michael Fassbender is one of the most sought actors in Hollywood nowadays. The 33-year-old star is allegedly pursued by moviemakers to take a role in two different movies. Showbiz 411 reports that Sony thinks the actor would be perfect to be an unnamed villainous role in an untitled Spider-Man reboot, and Matthew Vaughn wants him to play Magneto in "X-Men: First Class".

While the two roles are something that Fassbender would not miss, the site claims he likely cannot do both. It is possible that production schedules will ban him from taking all of the jobs at the same time, especially since the projects are in development at two different studios, which means that he should choose.

Since the report released by Showbiz 411 is still considered rumor, there is possibility that Fassbender could end up not playing either of the characters. Though so, he can soon be seen in "Jonah Hex" which will hit U.S. theaters on June 18.

"Spider-Man" reboot which will be produced by Columbia Pictures has Marc Webb on board to direct. As of late, it was reported that Jamie Bell has been chosen to play young Peter Parker, but the studio has not commented on the rumor. The film is set to be released in the U.S. on July 3, 2012.

As for "X-Men: First Class", the film has cast James McAvoy to play Charles Xavier, aka Professor X. Matthew Vaughn has signed up to take the helming duty while the production is scheduled to be kicked off this summer for June 3, 2011 release in the U.S.

Michael Fassbender: maybe your new (young) Magneto?

by: Dave Davis Jun. 8, 2010

We've already got James McAvoy (WANTED) as the young mutant idealist Charles Xavier in Matthew Vaughn's X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. But who will be his friend-then-foe Erik Lehnsherr, a.k.a., Magneto?

According to Showbiz411, Michael Fassbender is being pursued for the part of the powerful magnetism manipulator. The Irish-German actor is best known for his part in the INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS' messy plan, as well as 300's Spartan warrior Stelios ("Then we will fight in the shade").

But Fassbender (who also appears as a villain henchman in JONAH HEX) might have a comic conundrum -- he's reportedly also being chased to play the baddie in Sony's SPIDER-MAN reboot, presumably as the new/different/non-Dafoe Green Goblin.

Fox's X-MEN prequel takes place before the days of leather-clad X-heroes we know from Bryan Singer's movies, and focuses on Xavier and Erik's relationship: Before they were archenemies, they were the closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.

Extra Tidbit: Good choice? Which role would you rather see Fassbender take, if any? Or who would be a better selection?

Michael Fassbender Is Stuck Between A Spider Web And A Mutant Magnet Master
By George 'El Guapo' Roush on June 08, 2010

Michael Fassbender Is Stuck Between A Spider Web And A Mutant Magnet Master Michael Fassbender, who starred in Inglorious Basterds and will be in the upcoming Jonah Hex movie, has quite a dilemma according to Showbiz411. He's being pursued for two diffeent comic book movies.

More from Showbiz411:

He’s being pursued, I hear, for two different Marvel comics movies. Matthew Vaughn is said to want him for “X Men: First Class.” Fassbender would play young Magneto, the precursor for Ian McKellen’s later character. (Because of early senility, I mixed Magneto up with Professor X/Charles Xavier in an earlier version of this story. This is also largely due to my hearing Paul McCartney singing “Magneto and Titanium Man” in my head. Sorry.) James McAvoy is already signed to play Young Xavier.

At the same time, Fassbender is being pursued to play the villain in “Spider Man 4,” aka “No Toby Maguire Here.”

Hmm..what villain could he play in the new Spider-Man?? Carnage? No, I doubt they're going the Carnage route so soon.

Michael Fassbender to play the villain, but which one?
June 8, 2010
By Everwijn Overberg

Inglorious Bastards star: Michael Fassbender apparently is the runner up for two major superhero movies, that are both being shot at the same time. In both he seems to have been asked to play the part of the super villain.

For the new X-men movie he was asked for the part of a younger magneto, since the movie will be set in a time period, which predates the other 3 X-men movies, and will have to battle it out with James McAvoy who appears to be asked for the part of a younger Dr. Xavier. On the other hand the popular actor has also been asked to play the bad guy in the upcoming new Spiderman movie, which is being shot at approximately the same time. Which super villain Fassbender is supposed to be in the new Spidey flick, is still a big mystery, what we do know is that the movie will be shot in 3D.

According to Fassbinder’s busy schedule, it is impossible to take on the parts simultaneously, so it has to be either one, or the other.

Fans of the genre, are worried in case the actor will go with the X-men movie called “First Class”, whether or not he will be able to fill in the big shoes left behind by Ian Mckellen, who for all intends and purposes was magneto in all the three X-men movies in the franchise.

In any event, whether he will go with the new Spiderman movie or the new X-men movie, they will both be titles to look out for, for the superhero fans.

Michael Fassbender As Magneto?
Rumoured for X-Men: First Class
Source: Showbiz 411
Michael Fassbender As Magneto?

Michael Fassbender is a man in serious demand right now. And no surprise, given his excellent work in such films as Inglourious Basterds and Hunger. What his CV has lacked since 300, however is an iconic comic book role (his part in the upcoming Jonah Hex doesn’t count). But it looks like he’s about to change all that, since he's rumoured to have two big properties aiming to catch his eye like flirty teenage girls at the school disco: X-Men: First Class and the new Spider-Man reboot.

It’s the sort of dilemma any actor would kill to find themselves in: big-name properties with successful directors trying to get them to commit to a role offering broad exposure.

On the one hand, there is Matthew Vaughn and First Class, which, according to Showbiz 411, is angling to get Fassbender to play the young Erik Lensherr, the future Magneto. That one would put him alongside the already-cast James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier.

The X-Men prequel is in the middle of gathering up its mutant students, with Vaughn’s Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson already touted as a likely star (Scott Summers, anyone?) and Harry Potter’s Frank Dillane another possibility.

Fassbender’s a solid choice for the role as Lensherr, and we’d be interested to see what he could bring to the part. Should he require any voice coaching to get those Ian McKellen tones down pat, Empire is only too happy to rent out our own Gandalf/Magneto voice expert Chris Hewitt for a pricey sum (the talent, however, works for a case of Coca Cola).

And then there’s Sony’s new take on Spider-Man, with (500) Days Of Summer’s Marc Webb directing. While the film is still locking in a Peter Parker (current web chatter has Jamie Bell the front-runner in that particular horse race), Fassbender is apparently being courted to play the unspecified villain. Could the studio be attempting a second stab at the Green Goblin? We’ll find out soon enough.

So, any preference, folks? Which Marvel story should he go for?

Michael Fassbender to Play Villain in Either X-Men or Spider-Man

These days, it seems like Michael Fassbender just can't lose. Memorable performances in Steve McQueen's Hunger in 2008 Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds in 2009 were apparently just the beginning for the German-Irish actor; he has now reportedly been offered two incredible opportunities: playing Magneto in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class, or the still-unnamed villain in Marc Webb's Spider-Man reboot.

There's just one catch: he can't do both.

While both films are from Marvel, X-Men is being produced by Fox and Spider-Man by Columbia. So which villain to pick? Fassbender might find more longevity with Magneto, since he would almost certainly be a recurring character if First Class gets a sequel, while the villain in the Spider-Man reboot is likely to be defeated by Jamie Bell's Peter Parker.

No matter which villain he chooses, Fassbender appears to be on the movie-star track. Not only will he be a bad guy in Jonah Hex (opening next week), he'll also be playing Edward Rochester in Jane Eyre (alongside Jamie Bell), Carl Jung in David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method, and is slated to work with director Steven Soderbergh on Knockout. This August, Fassbender will star as Quintus Dias in Centurion.

With all that in just the span of two years, Fassbender's career is clearly taking off. A role as Magneto in X-Men: First Class or as the unnamed Spider-Man villain and Fassbender could be ready for super-stardom.

Michael Fassbender Wanted for Roles in X-Men & Spider-Man

Michael Fassbender

More interesting casting "news" to sort of report on, since it's not even close to being official. Showbiz411, which is a reliable blog, says that actor Michael Fassbender (seen in 300, Hunger, Inglourious Basterds, Fish Tank, Centurion, Jonah Hex) is being "pursued" for a couple of big roles in two upcoming comic book
movies. First, he's the person that Matthew Vaughn wants to play Magneto (aka Erik Lehnsherr) in Fox's X-Men: First Class reboot. Secondly, apparently he's in the running for a villain (they say "the villain") in Spider-Man 4, but I can't imagine there's only one villain in that reboot. But neither role is confirmed yet.

I hate reporting on this kind of casting news because it's way too early to be talking about it and it's all very speculative anyway. He could, in the end, not star in either of these roles. Showbiz411 says he "can't do both" (why not? because of scheduling?) so he'll either have to choose one role or the other (or neither). We also already know that James McAvoy has been cast as Charles Xavier in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class prequel. But we haven't had any official casting for Marc Webb's Spider-Man reboot yet. I love Fassbender and I'm always glad to see him in any movie, so either of these would be fine by me. We'll keep you updated!

Spidey or X-Men vs. a Basterd?
Fassbender reportedly up for villain roles in two different Marvel movies.
June 8, 2010
by Jim Vejvoda

Actor Michael Fassbender -- who is no stranger to comic book movies having appeared in 300 and as a bad guy in the upcoming Jonah Hex -- is reportedly mulling offers to play the villain in two separate Marvel movies.

Showbiz411.com columnist Roger Friedman (he of Wolverine leak infamy) reports that director "Matthew Vaughn is said to want him for X Men: First Class. Fassbender would play young Magneto, the precursor for Ian McKellen's later character."

Friedman adds that Fassbender, 33, is also being offered the role of the unnamed villain in Columbia's Spider-Man reboot. The actor can't do both films since they'll be filming around the same time so he'll have to choose one.

Given that Spidey will be set during Peter Parker's teen years, could the villain be Norman Osborn?

- Warner Bros.

Michael Fassbender's credits include Inglourious Basterds, Band of Brothers, Hunger and Centurion.

Will Michael Fassbender Be Magneto in X-Men: First Class?
Tuesday, June 8, 2010 1:07PM - By Krystal Clark

Will Michael Fassbender Be Magneto in X Men: First Class?

A couple weeks ago we learned that James McAvoy will takeover the role of Professor Charles Xavier (originally played by Patrick Stewart) in X-Men: First Class. In the world of comics, Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto) and Professor X have one of the greatest rivalries of all time. And according to several reports, Inglourious Basterds co-star Michael Fassbender has a serious shot at playing McAvoy’s evil other half…

Matthew Vaughn is set to direct First Class and Showbiz411 is claiming that he wants Fassbender to play Magneto, but there’s a problem. He’s also on a short list to play the main bad guy in the rebooted Spider-Man movie that’s being directed by Marc Webb. They’re two Marvel properties being done by two different studios (Fox, Sony) and due to scheduling he can’t star in both. Plus, wouldn’t it be kind of weird if he did? We’re having enough issues with Ryan Reynolds and his Deadpool/ Green Lantern switcheroo!

Fassbender’s in a tough spot because both franchises are well established and have characters we all know and love. The downside is that both of them have pretty much run themselves into the ground because of bad writing, casting, and too much studio influence. Neither are on good terms with their respective fan bases so it’s a coin toss on which film will be better received.

At least Fassbender knows that First Class will be led by a kick-ass actor like McAvoy. They haven’t even announced the lead for Spider-Man (Jamie Bell’s the rumored front runner), a film that will have him going up against a teenager. I think I’m leaning more towards X-Men on this one.

What film do you want to see Fassbender in, X-Men or Spider-Man?

Spider-Man 4, X-Men First Class, Michael Fassbender
Fassbender to Choose Villain Role in "X-Men: First Class" or "Spider-Man 4

Few people saw their career gain as much steam in 2009 as Michael Fassbender, who is now faced with a choice between lead villain roles in two of the biggest and best superhero franchises.

Fassbender has been offered the role of the young Magneto in "X-Men: First Class" and the as-yet-unidentified bad guy in "Spider-Man 4," according to Hollywood 411.

Magneto, previously played by Sir Ian McKellen, would be a nice fit for Fassbender, though he seems like a bad match against James McAvoy as a young Professor Xavier.

As for "Spider-Man," our friendly neighborhood webslinger has already faced off with the Green Goblin, Dr. Octopus, Sandman and Venom. During the whole Sam Raimi-Sony meltdown that led to Marc Webb being named director of "SM4," the Vulture and Black Cat were the baddies being mentioned the most -- Fassbender would be a good fit for one, but definitely not the other.

The Marvelous Characters of Marvel Comics

Other Spidey foes still up for grabs are:

* Kraven the Hunter, aka Sergei Kravinoff/Vlad Kravinoff/Alyosha Kravinoff: We love the idea of Fassbender wrapped in pelts tearing across New York City in an attempt to put Spider-Man's head in his trophy case -- and so will the ladies.

* Lizard, aka Curtis Connors: The guy accidentally turned himself into a reptile while trying to regrow his arm. Spidey helps find a cure that proves tragically short-lived and turns Connors into a bad guy.

* Morbius, aka Michael Morbius: Wouldn't it be nice to again have an irredeemably evil vampire in the zeitgeist?

It would be a serious roll of the dice for Fassbender to take this role without knowing who's going to play Spider-Man, though maybe Sony has assured him that the rumors about Jamie Bell (Fassbender's "Jane Eyre" co-star) are true.

That Fassbender is in the mix is a pretty strong indication that Sony has backed off of Black Cat, who was pretty clearly little more than an excuse to put a hot young actrees into this outfit like one of these.

Having received raves for his roles in both "Inglourious Basterds" and "Fish Tank," Fassbender has been fielding offers left and right since last year. In 2010 alone, he's starring as a Roman soldier in "Centurion," a goon in "Jonah Hex," and opposite Mia Wasikowksa as Rochester in Cary Fukunga's "Jane Eyre."

He'll also be starring in Steven Soderberg's "Knockout," about a black-ops agent out for revenge against the people who betrayed her and as Carl Jung opposite Viggo Mortensen's Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg's "A Dangerous Method."

Michael Fassbender wanted as Magneto in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS & as new SPIDEY villain?
Posted by Matt Holmes on June 8, 2010 – 6:30 pm

The undeniable man of the moment, Inglourious Basterds actor Michael Fassbender, is reportedly part of a tug-of-war battle between two rival studio’s, who both want the actor as the main villains in the next stage of their respective Marvel film franchises.

Showbiz 411 say that Matt Vaughn wants Fasssbender as the young Magneto in X-Men: First Class, whilst Marc Webb is chasing him to play the main villain (still unspecified) in Sony’s 3-d reboot of the Spider-Man franchise.

As it will begin filming in a matter of weeks, Fox are likely to be acting as the aggressor right now. They recently set James McAvoy to play a young Xavier and are closing in right now on Vaughn’s Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson to play Cyclops. Fassbender certainly fits the kind of actor Vaughn has gone for so far, and I say it will be pretty awesome casting if they can indeed secure his signature.

Jane Goldman is said to be polishing the script right now to make it slightly more a Goldman/Vaughn project (rather than a Bryan Singer one, who has stayed on to exec produce) and a deal you imagine would have to be secured in the next 10 days or so.

One stumbling block could be Fassbender’s schedule. We reported yesterday he was in talks for a role in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy that films in September, and right now he is playing Karl Jung in David Cronenberg’s Jung/Freud movie A Dangerous Method. There’s also Woman in Black and A Single Shot to film this year, both probably would need to be dropped for the Magento role but hey – it’s the Magneto role in a Matthew Vaughn film. Those movies seem less important in comparison.

Onto the Spider-Man villain story, and this one feels like Roger Freidman’s source is reaching. The Magneto part is easy to believe as he has seriously become the fan’s favourite ever since the film’s start date was announced recently but for Spidey, I mean as far as we are aware (although there is a heavy rumor going around that Jamie Bell is to be given the role), they haven’t cast a Peter Parker yet, let alone an actor to play whatever villain they go with.

So we aren’t putting any more weight into the rumour right now and to be honest, we are scratching our heads as to what part he could play anyway. Any thoughts?

Michael Fassbender Must Choose Between X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and the SPIDER-MAN Reboot
by Brendan Bettinger Posted:June 8th, 2010 at 10:18 am

It seems that Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) is destined for the Marvel universe, though which project should he sign on for? Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class or the Marc Webb Spider-Man reboot? Decisions, decisions.

Vaughn wants Fassbender to play a young Magneto opposite James McAvoy’s Professor Charles Xavier in Fox’s X-Men prequel, while Sony thinks the actor would be perfect for an unnamed villainous role in the Webb take on Spider-Man.

Ideally Fassbender could do both, but Showbiz 411 says the production schedules will not permit such harmony, especially since the projects are in development at two different studios. First Class is targeting a June 3, 2011 release date, though so far they only have a director (Vaughn), a writer (Kick-Ass‘ Jane Goldman), and a single cast member (McAvoy). Official news will likely replace the rumors soon enough if the prequel is truly on track for release next summer.

Spider-Man has even less solidified, though more time to do so with a July 3, 2012 released date — in 3D, of course. James Vanderbilt has finished a “gritty, contemporary” script, and the latest rumor pegs Jamie Bell (Tintin: The Secret Adventures of the Unicorn) as Peter Parker.

There’s no word on what role Fassbender is up for, and I’m not familiar enough with Spidey villains to offer up possibilities. I welcome suggestions in the comments.

Fassbender will next be seen in Jonah Hex, the June 18th sci-fi western which stars Josh Brolin and Megan Fox. August sees the actor as a Roman soldier in Neil Marshall’s Centurion. And would you look at that: Fassbender teamed up with potential Spider-Man co-star Jamie Bell for literary adaptation Jane Eyre, which stars Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland).

Michael Fassbender to Play Villain in 'X-Men: First Class' or 'Spider-Man'?

by Christopher Campbell Jun 8th 2010 // 12:32PM

German-Irish actor Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds, Hunger) has reportedly been offered the villain role in two movies adapted from the Marvel Universe: X-Men First Class and the Spider-Man reboot (will it actually be titled Spider-Man 4?). Unfortunately, this isn't another multi-film crossover thing, a la the Avengers assembly. According to Roger Friedman at Showbiz 411, the rising star must choose one project or the other. In the former, he'd portray a young Eric Lehnsherr, aka Magneto, taking over the part originally played by Sir Ian McKellan. And he'd get to act opposite James McAvoy, as Professor X. For the latter, the villain character is unknown, so feel free to start speculating about which of Spidey's foes Fassbender would be good for. Or, would you just prefer he take on the magnetic mutant and forget about potentially battling a web-slinging Jamie Bell (still unconfirmed)?

Surely I'm not alone in wishing he could do all movies offered to him. I'd also like to see Fassbender in the superhero role at some point. Plenty of actors are taking multiple comic-based gigs these days, and if we can expect audiences not to confuse Green Lantern with Deadpool or Human Torch with Captain America or Kick-Ass with Cyclops (if rumors of Aaron Johnson being wooed for First Class are true), we can find a way to accept Fassbender as both Magneto and ... (Kraven perhaps?). The actor is already appearing in one comic book movie this summer, the DC adaptation Jonah Hex. Interestingly enough, he's playing right-hand to the villain Quentin Turnbull, portrayed by John Malkovich, who was previously set to be the baddie in Spider-Man 4. And if Fassbender doesn't take the Spidey gig, I'd like Malkovich to be given another shot.

Jonah Hex Villain to Play Magneto, Too?
Added by Tom Pinchuk on June 8, 2010

Is this the next Magneto?

Let’s put this up front: Michael Fassbender is being approached for roles in two separate Marvel movies, according to the Coventry Telegraph. Apparently, he’ll have to choose between playing young Magneto in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and an unnamed villain in the SPIDER-MAN reboot. I’ve never paid much mind to Fassbender’s name before this, so I didn't realize that he’s done some great performances I’ve seen over the years. Most recently, he was the British film critic turned secret agent in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS and, sometime before that, he was Stelios in 300 (the Spartan with the famous “Then we will fight in the shade” line.) He’s playing the tattooed assassin, Burke, in JONAH HEX and will also act in Cronenberg’s A DANGEROUS METHOD, about the early years of another couple of mega-minds, Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud.

I could definitely see him playing Magneto. Given this range of characters in his filmography, he could probably play any character. I’m almost more curious as to what villain he’s being offered for SPIDER-MAN 4. Given his identity-changing espionage in BASTERDS, the character that pops into my mind immediately is the Chameleon. Who do you Comic Vine maniacs see him as?

If Fassbender does cast, he’ll likely have to prepare for a trip (appropriately) to Wolverine state, because SHH has found an alert from the Michigan State Film Office that pertains to FIRST CLASS’ location scouting. Of course, they’re looking for locations that can double for South American locations, specifically “café and bar locations evoking the feel of Bariloche and an Art Deco Café or restaurant looking over a body of water” and a “Miami styled harbor for yachts.” Well, that is pretty specific. Seems like young Chuck 'n Buckethead will be roaming across more places than just Israel, like in the comics.

Is Michael Fassbender Young Magneto or a Spider-Man Villain?

Michael Fassbender has reportedly been offered the roles of young Magneto in X-Men: First Class and the villain in Sony’s Spider-Man reboot. Which should he choose?

Even with roles in 300 and the upcoming Jonah Hex, the comic book crowd might not be immediately familiar with German-born actor Michael Fassbender. If today’s news comes to pass, all of that is about to change.

Roger Friedman at Showbiz 411 is reporting that Fassbender has been offered the role of Eric Lensherr/Magneto in Matthew Vaughan’s X-Men: First Class as well as the role of the main villain in Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot. Taking into consideration that these films are set up at different studios, if Fassbender is interested it’s unlikely he’ll be able to do both. He’s going to have to choose one or the other.

Although we have no idea who the villain in the new Spider-Man might be at this point, my vote is Fassbender for the role of young Magneto in First Class. I think Fassbender would make for an unbelievably effective younger version of the character (he would have made a great Xavier as well).

I also love the idea of Fassbender sharing the screen with James McAvoy’s Professor X. Given that the film centers around the evolution (and disintegration) of the Xavier/Lensherr relationship, an actor of Fassbender’s caliber would be a welcome addition and excellent sparring partner for McAvoy.

Fassbender appeared as Lt. Archie Hicox in last year’s Inglourious Basterds and as previously mentioned, he can be seen this summer as a villainous henchman in another comic book adaptation, Jonah Hex.

X-Men: First Class is set to be released June 3rd, 2011 while the Spider-Man reboot swings into theaters on July 3rd, 2012. Jonah Hex hits screens on June 18th.

How do you feel about Fassbender appearing in either of these films? Which role would you rather see him take on? With his name as a potential candidate, who might the villain in the Spider-Man reboot be?

Michael Fassbender To Play Magneto In First Class OR The Villain In Spider-Man?
Reports are coming in that fan favorite Fassbender is being pursued by Mathew Vaughan to play Magento in X-Men: First Class, as well as by Marc Webb to play the as yet unrevealed villain in his Spider-Man reboot...
According to Showbiz411, German born, Irish raised Michael Fassbender is being pursued by two different directors making two very different CBMs for two different studios.

According to Roger Friedman at Showbiz411..

He’s being pursued, I hear, for two different Marvel comics movies. Matthew Vaughn is said to want him for “X Men: First Class.” Fassbender would play young Magneto[though Friedman says Xavier here, I assume its a momentary brain fart!], played in the first three films by Ian McKellen.
At the same time, Fassbender is being pursued to play the villain in “Spider Man 4,” aka “No Toby Maguire Here.”

Nothing official, so its just a rumor for now. And of course, even if he is being sought after there is no indication that he will acept either role. Fassbender has been very prominent in our fan casts here at CBM thanks to his great work in movies such as Inglorious Basterds and more indie fare like Eden Lake and Fish Tank. He will be seen next in DC comic adaptation Jonah Hex, and he also had a supporting role in 300 so at least we know CBMs hold an interest. Magneto I could totally see though. And which villain could possibly fit Fassbender in the Spider-man reboot?

Fassbender is currently filming David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method, in which he plays the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. Viggo Mortenson also stars.

Michael Fassbender up for young Magneto in X-Men: First Class and villain role in Spider-Man
By David Bentley on Jun 8, 10 12:19 PM

IT'S a battle of the baddies for Michael Fassbender.

The 33-year-old - whose credits include 300, Inglourious Basterds, Centurion and upcoming Jonah Hex - faces a choice between roles in X-Men: First Class and the next Spider-Man.

Showbiz 411 reports that he is being sought to play the young version of Ian McKellen's Erik Lensherr (aka Magneto) in Fox's mutant prequel and also for an unspecified villain in Sony's next Spider-Man film.

With both movies set to start filming later this year, Fassbender (pictured above and below right) faces a tough choice but the German-born star seems a great fit for Lensherr, whose comic book origins revealed him to be from a German Jewish family.

If the actor chooses the X-Men role, he would appear opposite James McAvoy who is playing the young Professor Charles Xavier. The film centres on how the friendship between the two men disintegrated and led to the opposing forces of the X-Men and Brotherhood as seen in the blockbuster trilogy.

Matthew Vaughn will direct First Class and it's now reported that a location manager for the studio is looking for "areas with a 1960s South-American or Central American island feel" particularly "cafe and bar locations, evoking the Argentinian feel of Bariloche, and an art deco cafe or restaurant overlooking a body of water. Additionally, the movie calls for a Miami-styled harbour for yachts."

Vaughn's wife Claudia Schiffer has said she hopes some of the filming will take place in her native Germany, with Yahoo News reporting her as saying: "I would like to move to Berlin with Matthew and the kids for a few months. If we're lucky he'll be shooting some of X-Men in Berlin. I would love that."

Fassbender is currently filming David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method, in which he plays the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung.

Also in the film, which looks at how the relationship between Jung and Siegmund Freud created psychoanalysis, are Viggo Mortensen (as Freud), Keira Knightley and Vincent Cassel.

Michael Fassbender up for both Spider-Man and X-Men

by Liam on June 8, 2010

Michael Fassbender According to Showbiz 411 Michael Fassbender, who starred in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds last year, is being pursued for two comic book movie roles.

Matthew Vaughn is apparently interested in having Fassbender play a young Magneto in X-Men: First Class, while Sony is keen on signing the actor up as the new villain in the Spider-Man reboot.

If audiences accept the new Spider-Man as well as the previous trilogy then Fassbender will be seen by a lot more eyeballs, and he may get a bigger paycheck if the film reaches the same $800 million heights as before. However, the trend for Spidey villains is that they meet their demise towards the end of the film, so it may only be a one film deal for Fassbender.

With X-Men: First Class, apart from being almost perfect for the part, Fassbender may get to appear in future sequels which he may find attractive. Magneto is also a lead character alongside James McAvoy’s Charles Xavier, so this will be Fassbender first major leading role in a blockbuster.

Which film should Fassbender go for?
