Prometheus ★☆☆☆☆ The Alien franchise sinks even lower still

This film is populated by daft, bland characters whose reactions to each other and to the epic, first alien contact situation never ring true. They are reckless and amateurish and set a whole new standard for fools rushing in. The film is jam-packed, start to finish, with rindonkulous, thoroughly mockable don’t-go-in-there idiocy. The characters are so dumb you want them to get chest-bursted. It’s a trillion-dollar exploratory expedition, we are told, but the crew seem to be entirely made up of unprofessional misfits; no one seems to know each other or why they are there until a brief orientation lecture upon arrival at another planet. No one even really asks any questons.

When the crew finds a few dead aliens, the “scientist” in charge jumps to the conclusion that they must all be dead (everywhere?) and is petulantly disappointed that he doesn’t get to “meet his maker.” He does not spend so much as a single line of dialogue speculating about the significance of anything they did find: fabulous artifacts, proof that we’re no alone in the universe, that sort of thing. He’s more concerned about his existential angst. Hey, Ridley: THAT’S NOT HOW SCIENTISTS REACT TO DISCOVERING ALIENS. The characer of Ash in Alien — an android! — had much more natural curiosity than these characters. And charisma.

This movie lacked everything that made Alien great. It is actually as bad as Alien 4, if not worse. There’s so much more wrong … but without characters or chemistry, who cares?

Our audience (packed house) literally laughed at the final alien reveal… and not in a good way. It’s a grim sign indeed when people laugh at the ending of your supposedly scary and profound movie.

As with Arthur rated below, weighing Prometheus on its own merits is essential, although there are also a number of clear and well thought out tie-ins to the rest of the Alien universe. The expectations of such a prolific franchise definitely work against Prometheus, but in my opinion, Prometheus is a solid film, and one which works equally well as an introduction into this universe. This film is an all-round excellent film, providing stunning special effects and impressive CGI, a well-developed female lead (leaping through the bechdel test) and some beautiful acting, particularly from Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron. This film is very satisfying to watch, with very few flaws.

Saw Prometheus

I liked it. I think.

Specifically it was visually so perfect and layered. Character wise, the actors were magnificent. Fassbender shines. His performance invokes Holm and Henriksen’s previous Alienverse androids while crafting his own subtle take. I was surprised that he was a major player in the plot.

I loved Noomi Rapace. She made Elizabeth Shaw vulnerable and yet strong, especially on the themes of belief and faith. Her resiliency is a direct succession of Weaver’s Ripley, but different enough to not be a rip off by any means.

The plot itself and the story were well crafted. The movie sweeps you along nicely. Scott has great ability as a director to give you glimpses of the world that has been created that don’t linger or feel self indulgent. Once I got it more in my head that this really was only tenuously related to Alien, the more I enjoyed it as a stand alone.

The more I think about the movie, the more impressed I am and the more anxious I am to see it again to see what I missed.

Prometheus: Science or Science-Fiction?

I went to see Prometheus last night. Fantastic movie. The visuals were amazing and the performances by the main actors were top-notch, but the story is the really exciting part.

So, the idea behind the movie is that we (the human race) were created and placed on Earth by intelligent beings from a distant planet or as they like to call them, “Engineers.” It explores the notions of faith and evolution and even makes you question your own beliefs in the process. Were we created? If so, was it by God or something else. These Engineers resemble us, so were we made in their image? Is our idea of God actually these beings from far away and how would that affect our core values? The idea that life on earth doesn’t actually originate from earth is a very real possibility.

Panspermia is the theory that life on earth began as bacteria that “hitchhiked” on the back of a meteor or other form of space debris and crashed into earth a long time ago. On the same vein, let’s take a look at Mars. The red planet has shown evidence that it was once covered in water. It is also the most hospitable planet in our solar system besides Earth. Where there is water, there is life. So it isn’t inconceivable that a long time ago, something collided into Mars. Sending off a chunk of the planet into space with ancient Martian bacteria attached. The rock comes hurdling towards Earth and the bacteria is able to sustain on our lovely planet. And millions of years later, here we are. So, we could in fact be Martians. Cool, right?

Something I found inspiring was Ridley Scott’s vision of our future, particularly the advancements of science and technology. The movie takes place in 2093. Ladies and gentleman, this is only 81 years away. Not even a full century. The spaceship, Prometheus, travels 35 light years away to this distant planet. That’s 210 TRILLION miles away. The furthest man has traveled is to the moon. Would that big of a leap in space exploration be possible at all let alone in 80 years? Also, the character David is an android capable of independent thought and advanced learning. Could sentient beings be perfected by then. Thinking about these things, in the past 100 years we have created television, automobile, flight, nuclear weapons, the computer and the internet. We have come a very long way since the early 1900’s. Imagine the potential we have for the next hundred years.

I could go on and on about how Prometheus is much more than just a sci-fi movie. It makes you think about where we cam from and where we are going. Our future can be just as exciting as our past. I hope you and I will see these new discoveries first-hand. Cheers.

Prometheus Feels

Right from the start I knew it was going to be an incredible experience…
Those f#%@#&! opening credits, the cinematography blew my balls off. Like It had seriously some of the most beautiful shots I’ve ever witnessed.
The acting was really top notch, notable performances by Noomi and Michael (obv) Also Idris Elba was just a total bad ass and I loved him in this movie. I can’t wait to see him do more roles like that.
Also CHARLIZE THERONS ASS IN THE PROMETHEUS JUMP SUITS YOU GUYS, I CAN NOT. SERIOUSLY.

I really just fell in love with the story and feel of the movie right from the begining. I always have a fascination with films that know when to be quiet and when to be loud. (see Drive, No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood etc)
The idea of the film being more or less an Alien prequel WITHOUT ACTUALLY BEING AN ALIEN PREQUEL was also just an amazing concept to me.
The CG was just mind blowing-ly good.(I don’t see 3D movies very often, and this will definitely be one of them)
The plot was mysterious and had you constantly guessing and questioning the things you were seeing (some people found this aspect to be very negative, but to those people I say, GET A f#%@#&! IMAGINATION.) Why do you have to have films thats narrative is spoon fed to you all the time. Where is your sense of wonder. Do you not know how to appreciate good story telling when you see it?
And if anything this is my main complaint about the movie, not even the movie itself, but the complaints that it is receiving for having quote unquote “Plot holes” and “Lack of character development” like are you really that dumb? Do you not see how the film is set up for a sequel that will more than likely answer any of the questions the film gives you?
Idk, my opinion I suppose.
Regardless. go see this, it kept me on the edge of my seat (there were seriously some gut wrenching scenes here folks. not for the faint of heart (or for people with a weak stomach LITERALLY lol inside joke about the movie)

There is nothing in the desert - A review of Prometheus

This will have spoilers. So Prometheus. Interesting movie. I liked it, a lot. It did what it did very well. It wasn’t trying to be Alien. If anything, it was more Blade Runner then Alien. I think the focus and most interesting part of the movie was not on a human but on the android. The relationship and metaphor was clear. The entire movie ostensibly was talking about our search for our creators but it also had this android observing how we go about doing that and effecting the outcome. The android’s relationship with us was from created to creator and worked effectively as metaphor for our own search. Most of the best moments in the movie were unsaid or hidden. We have a need to speak the why of what we are doing. There is an exchange late in the movie that hammers that home and points out that the android had no conception of “why”, didn’t understand the need for asking that question. Over and over again in the movie, we find that the android has kept a secret, sometimes from the crew and sometimes, as when he speaks to the Engineer, from us. The doctor did, I believe, start to understand that when the android slips and gives away the fact that he was the cause of most of the deaths but this only reinforces the effectiveness of his (relative) silence. Explaining your tactics or goals is a human need but not shared by the android and in most cases, would never have been as effective. Secrecy can be a currency that is spent when shared. It is the need for explaining or justifying ourselves that usually lead us to frivolously spend our secret currency, a need to let others know of our why. This inability to understand “why” is what separates the android from us. The unsaid question then is what is it that separates us from our creators, what leap is it that we can’t make? The doctors need to put the cross back on didn’t register because he thought of faith as a logical transaction and there are humans who think that way, need a justification or reason for faith but that betrays the very meaning of the word. Just initial thoughts. A bit overwhelmed. There was a lot going on. A good movie. There may be a second part to this when this comes out on DVD.

Thoughts - spoilery.

Ohhh my God, this was so beautifully filmed and everything was just so stupidly cool and Fassbender was a great android but it had the potential to be so much more. This may have been because I was expecting more of a horror movie than anything else but I felt like they made a number of missteps that sort of derailed the film for me. I can live with the scientists being dummies and taking off their helmets/touching EVERYTHING (hey, how else is s$#! gonna go down?) but I felt like the movie wasn’t, I don’t know, menacing enough?

What was with the score that seemed to be playing for a different movie? Every terrifying event was followed by weirdly uplifting/vaguely patriotic music! And even though it may have been limiting, I wish that they’d centralised the action in one location instead of spreading it between the pyramid and the ship and having the characters go constantly to and fro.

I don’t know. There was a lot happening but none of it seemed to have any lasting significance or ramifications, which really diminished their dramatic impact. The sequence in which Shaw essentially self-aborts her alien baby (oh, I see you sidestepping that word, movie, is the pro-life campaign still going strong in the 2090s?) should have been the horror centrepiece of the movie but we didn’t have any time to process it amidst the revelation that Weyland was still alive and the fact that we didn’t get to see the other characters react to it either was really annoying. It just seemed like a wasted opportunity.

Of course, the most egregious issue with this movie was the fact that we got to see Noomi Rapace and Trey Atwood get it on but we didn’t get to see Charlize and Idris Elba bone. I mean, COME ON!

Short Summary of My Thoughts on Prometheus

Prometheus is f#%@#&! good, and you should see it. Its got some of the best visuals, art-style, cinematography and one of the most intriguing concepts I’ve seen this year, if not the best in all of those categories.

The best part, though is the moral. It is essentially a declaration of the futility of mankind and its desire to find meaning in the godless universe we live in. The film leaves you feeling kinda sad, and raises more questions than answers, which is precisely why it’s beautiful. It also serves as a perfect bridge to the Alien series, featuring many awesome little Easter eggs I won’t spoil.

The only downsides were the characters. Save for the android, David, none of them were remotely interesting or relatable. Sure the spunky girl has some badass moments and the funny black guy says funny black guy things, but every character, save David, can be traced back to an unoriginal character archetype. The dialougue is stupid, and the character development is predictable, save when it comes out of the left field. Character traits seem more like nice little coincidences than actual human attributes.

Despite the abysmal characterization, I can’t recommend this movie enough. It’s nice to see a film in this age of sugar-coating and light romcoms that doesn’t pull punches. Save for a small scene towards the end of the film, the message is clear. Human life is pointless, and attempting to find reason for your existance will only result in pain

So in short, if you can handle a barrage of beautiful pessimism, go see Prometheus

Plot: A group of scientist go exploring a single from a far off planet.

Review: My favorite description of “Alien” came from Ridley Scott and he said “Alien” was “a haunted house movie in space.” And it makes sense, a bunch of people are trapped in a house “spaceship” with a creature. It follows all the tropes: the people venture somewhere they shouldn’t, then they act rash and are punished. The only one who survives is the virgin or in this case the one who isn’t motivated by greed or selfishness. And if “Alien” is a haunted house movie then “Prometheus” is a devil movie. Once again following the tropes, it’s about a bunch of people mixed of skeptics and believers who go looking for God or our creator and instead find the devil or our destructor. I really enjoyed this film. It has a couple of plot holes but not as many as other reviews would have you believe. I think a problem with audiences nowadays is that we want answers to everything and Scott isn’t willing to give us them. He works like he did on the original. For example in the original, we never really knew what or how the aliens ate and we didn’t need to. Here is the same thing. He leaves it up to us to figure out somethings and that may annoy people. (as it already seems to be) The performances are really good and quite surprising. Last week, I said Charlize Theron did a good job and again she impress. Even Noomi Rapace turns in a great performance and makes her character more than just another lead. This is after a boring turn in Sherlock Holmes: A game of shadows where I thought she didn’t bring anything to the role. Shaw is a good character if not a generally likable one, which is even more difficult. There are a lot of references to the Alien movies, my favorite being Michael Fassbender’s David. Go back and see what Bishop says about the synthetics in “Aliens” to see what I mean. This movie also doesn’t take place on the same planet but in the same universe so there are a lot of connections but it’s not a lead up. It’s a step child. Like if the Star Wars prequels were about the original owners of the Millennium Falcon. Overall the film is good and you should try to see it. Even if it doesn’t hit every mark, it tries. Harder than most and movies should be rewarded for that. Movies should be awarded with trying to make you think even if it’s a big budget film. That was one of my favorite things about this franchise. When it’s good, it’s because they have taken a movie about killer aliens and done it so well that it makes you think more even as you enjoy it. Summer movies don’t need to be thinkers but when they are, they are special.

Trivia: Designer H.R. Giger was brought in to assist in reverse-engineering the design of the Aliens in the film.

Prometheus. (No spoilers here, don't worry)

I’m actually getting a bit frustrated at all of the hate sent its way. I sat down and had goosebumps when it started, and still had goosebumps by the time it ended. Not from fear, but from awe. What a beautifully directed piece of film, and the cast was phenomenal. I’m itching to go see it again. Stunning graphics, FANTASTIC art/conceptual direction (HR Giger was behind it all, so go figure) and people are giving it a 2/10, etc. What the hell is wrong with people?!! D: I couldn’t disagree with them more.

I think what happened is that they were expecting a true “Alien” prequel, but it’s not. Sure, it’s definitely based in the same universe and makes many ties to Alien, but it’s not a definitive prequel. Also I think I’m gonna have to buy the art book of this movie, just because it’s that wicked. Also the Greek mythology references are amazing!

Long story short, I loved it. I was enthralled, and it takes a LOT to keep me entertained during a movie that long at a midnight premiere with class the next morning. Go see it!

Prometheus review

Oh, Ridley. Ridley, Ridley, Ridley. I forgive you for ROBIN HOOD. In fact, PROMETHEUS, the first science fiction film from Mr. Scott (heh, science fiction… Mr. Scott… Scotty… awesome) since 1982’s magnificent BLADE RUNNER is so good that I promise never to mention 2010’s cinematic abortion ever again. PROMETHEUS, the kind-of-sort-of, is-it-or-isn’t-it prequel to ALIEN is one of the best science fiction movies to come out in, well, I don’t even want to think about how long.

The biggest flaw with PROMETHEUS is not actually the movie’s fault. Simply put, the hype built up for this movie was flat-out obscene. Sure, THE AVENGERS was more hyped, but it’s easier for an instant gratification crowd pleaser like that to immediately live up to the audience’s expectations. PROMETHEUS is a movie that, like ALIEN or BLADE RUNNER—hell, even 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY—seems destined to have more of a long-term impact on the viewer than an immediate one.

The story focuses on an expedition to LV-223 (not, apparently, LV-426, the satellite where the aliens are originally found in ALIEN) to discover the potential source of life on Earth, and maybe even finally answered the biggest questions that we have—which all the best science fiction seems to deal with eventually, the question of what it means to be human. To say any more about the story would be unfair, except for one thing. If you’re hoping that PROMETHEUS is a pure prequel to the ALIEN series, you will be disappointed, as the film has other things on its mind. However, it’s not an entirely original property, as it does take place in the same universe as ALIEN and explains some background on certain life forms. I never really needed to know the origins of the scenario that the crew of the Nostromo stumbled upon, but seeing PROMETHEUS doesn’t remove the power of anything from ALIEN. The similarities seem less like set up and more like the result of the film being set in the same universe. It works, and it is fantastic to see a mostly original property in an age of remakes and sequels.

And was this an attractive film, or what? Say what you want about the quality of Ridley Scott’s films, but the man can make one good looking motion picture. The gorgeous landscapes, the use of light and shadows, the slick cinematography and the awesome visual effects all add up to a movie that is always a pleasure to look at. Major props go to the cinematographer, Dariusz Wolski, as well. The atmosphere was very ALIEN-esque, oppressive and creepy with a slow build to an exciting climax (I just made movies about grotesque body horror sound like a sex pun. Great.) And while this isn’t what you would call an “actor’s” movie, everyone on display is absolutely perfect. There’s not a bad performance to be seen—even the no-names are compelling. The three performers who stand out the most are Noomi Rapace as the tough but vulnerable lead, Charlize Theron as a mega-bitch, and of course Michael Fassbender as David, the android. Fassbender continues his string of impossibly good performances as the curious android that lacks for ethics. Idris Elba and Guy Pearce show up, mostly to be awesome.

One possible complaint is that while PROMETHEUS is full of intriguing questions, it lacks any follow-through on them. But like BLADE RUNNER or 2001, the ideas are there, and they matter more than easy answers. That’s what makes PROMETHEUS such an intriguing film, and one that will surely reward multiple viewings. The connections to ALIEN potentially distract from the ideas on hand. Luckily, Scott and screenwriter Damon Lindelof have said that if there is a sequel to PROMETHEUS, it will have even less to do with the previous franchise. That is good, because what we have here is a film that establishes everything it needs to for Ripley and the crew of the Nostromo to stumble upon their buddies—now it would be great to see something new. I am eagerly awaiting PROMETHEUS 2.

That said, PROMETHEUS works just fine on its own. It really is an example of flawless craftsmanship serving an exciting story and philosophical ideas—exactly the kind of movie I want to see more of. For the gamers out there, the sense of exploration of not only space, but history as well, reminded me more of the original MASS EFFECT than anything else. The whole time there was this feeling that the answers were out there, but we may not like them when we find them. That’s probably true not just of MASS EFFECT and PROMETHEUS, but the reality we live in.

While I wouldn’t say that PROMETHEUS stands on the same level of ALIEN and BLADE RUNNER just yet, it bears remembering that those earlier films took time before their full impact could be realized. The same is undoubtedly true for Ridley Scott’s latest film, and who knows what ten years of reflection could bring for it? The mixed reaction it’s receiving from critics so far is already a good sign that the creators have done something right. I loved PROMETHEUS, and can’t wait to see it a second time. If you haven’t gone out to experience it yet, I urge you to do so. Especially if you’re as sick of those sci fi films that go right for the instant gratification as I am.

Prometheus Mini-Review.

What a brilliant piece of Sci-Fi filmmaking from the man who helped revolutionize the genre, Ridley Scott. A film that ambitiously tries to answer one of the ultimate questions in the origin of our species, while simultaneously showing us the origin of an iconic, and horrifying, threat. Even though its not officially a prequel to Scott’s classic “Alien”, I do suggest you watch it before taking a dive at this beautiful and haunting adventure, as there are quite a few direct ties (Those Space Jockeys…). I must say, this was also one of the most visually impressive films I have ever seen, from the main ship of the crew, to the desolate lair in the uninhabitable planet, and every costume and environment in between. In terms of performances, the big standouts were the impeccable Michael Fassbender as the emotionless and morally questionable android David, and Noomi Rapace as the religious and timid team leader Elizabeth Shaw (I also very much enjoyed Charlize Theron’s turn as the cold Weyland corp rep Meredith Vickers). Overall, a film that has all the makings of a modern sci-fi classic. A must-watch.

…Don’t go and see it if you’re expecting something like Alien.

(SPOILERS AHEAD)

I’m so disappointed. I was looking forward to an awesome horror science fiction movie, that helps open our eyes to some of the questions that have arisen throughout the saga.

But this? This was… In the nicest way, a disgrace.

Honestly, in some cases, it was all right. Some cases. Overall… Just, no. Really. The characters were tasteless. The plot, while followable, had ruts and sub-plots that were questionable and ended up being unanswered in the end. Why did David infect Charlie? For the lulz? Because YOLO? Did he just want to play around or something? I suppose, perhaps he wanted Shaw to get infected. But how would he have possibly known that the two were going to have sex in the first place? Cuz he’s aware of the human hormones, maybe? (I must have missed a bit in the dialogue, cuz this was made clear to me through an Anon.)

Charlie was a doof, anyway. I felt no sympathy for him when the captain biotch was forced to burn him to death. And because Shaw was bland too, I didn’t feel bad for her when she was all sad that he, um, died. Charlie was kind of cute and all, but the douchey way he treated David was uncalled for, and he seemed to have gotten drunk for no reason. Hey, maybe David infected him cuz he was an arse to him.

Also, they went and made it so clear that Shaw couldn’t have babies. I guess this was to add drama to her character? What, they didn’t do that enough with the clearification that both her parents died, for reasons that were not explained, but pointed out (remember when David said something about Charlie dying in a similar fashion to her father?). They also made it a huge thing that she was a Christian. I don’t see why that was needed…. Maybe so they don’t get hate on the movie from Christians who don’t like the fact that they basically said God didn’t create people, but really we came from whatever-the-heck those things were. I guess that’s fine, but it sort of seemed to get in the way.

Anyway. There were some holes that ended up never being explained, as well. The worms that they went out of their ways to zoom in on for the audience to take notice of. And why? For no reason. No mention of the worms. No notice. Maybe they were there to symbolize that the place could support life? Who knows. Wasn’t clear enough.

The biologist and the beard-guy were stupid, too. Oh, smart biologist, who decides to try and touch an evidently hostile alien of which he knew nothing about and had no knowledge of. Good idea. Then, what, the beard-guy (or was it the biologist?) seemed to have come back from the dead for no reason? Why? That wasn’t in any other Alien movie, I don’t think? Do they have zombies on the planet now? That was totally unneeded.

In fact, every one on this crew was stupid. Except the black guy, the Asian guy, and uh, the other guy. The three who crashed the ship at the end. I liked them. But everyone else, really. Taking off your helmets on an Alien planet just because your crappy readers can detect no known harmful bacteria? What about, idk, ALIEN BACTERIA SINCE YOU’RE ON AN ALIEN PLANET. All sorts of crap could have happened, whether the place was terraformed or not, do you really want to risk it? Smartest scientists around can’t even consider that, go figure!

Why did the old guy come with them? That was unneeded.
Why was the chick his daughter? They had one considerable scene. Unneeded.
Why did they have to show Shaw giving herself a cesarean section? That was just gross. Unneeded. The scene, I mean. Sure, idc that she did it. I probably would have too, if I had an alien in my uterus.

Why did the Super Albino Humans (that’s what I’m calling our ‘ancestors’ now) want to kill us? They created us… Then created the Alien to kill us. What, did they foresee Kim Kardashian’s birth, and the imminent creation of the Jersey Shore, and decide, ‘holy crap we really screwed up’? Then, I wouldn’t blame them. But again, no way for them to know. It’s like they just changed their mind or something. BUT IT WAS NEVER MADE CLEAR. And this was a prequel… But Shaw left to go and find out why. Please, don’t make a sequel, guys. You screwed up bad enough in this one.

Honestly, Shaw had the WORST time. Boyfriend dying, getting preg with a squid, having to cut herself open to get the squid out, stapling her stomach, having to run away from the huge guy, almost getting crushed by a spaceship, nearly getting killed again by the huge guy. Poor chick. And to think, the WHOLE thing was her idea. Sucks to be her.

Moving on, I have one more point. I probably could have lived with everything else. But this really, really just threw me off the edge. So, we all know in Alien, they find the Alien sitting on the beacon thing, with a hole in his stomach. In this, we saw the S.A.H. get in the chair, put his helm. on, everything. Perfect, yay, we all got excited, this is it.

But then……..

HE LEAVES HIS SEAT JUST TO GO AND KILL SHAW? WHAT THE ACTUAL-

And then he gets infected by her squid child, who appearantly is a giant face hugger?? And bursts there, in the room-place. Not in the chair. Like in Alien.

Then… How does it tie into Alien? Who the heck did they find in the chair? Did the Alien decide to pick him up, bring him to the chair, set him there and make him look cool? Sure, possibly, but it waSNT CLEAR HERE IN THIS MOVIE

The story line was bad, but I think it could have been worked out. The characters were tasteless and bland, very static, save Shaw, whose only dynamic trait was the fact that she decided, hmm, maybe this was a bad idea. The acting, however, was pretty good. (Michael Fassbender, yummmmm <3). The set and graphics were undoubtedly astounding. The artwork for the ship was truly amazing, I must say. Too many meaningless sub-plots that went unexplained, and just took too much away from the main focus of the film. The movie was a disappointment in the horror genre, as I was expecting to be scared out of my socks, not bored. I didn’t jump at all. I was just disturbed at parts. The jump scares, while they always get me, were predictable, and I wasn’t afraid a single time.


On my personal scale, I give the movie a 4 / 10.

Seriously, this is just me rambling about how terrifying this movie is.

I mean, not in the traditional sense of terror.

I’m just easily scared.

But there are giant albino mother fuckers wanting to f&#! my s$#! up and that’s not cool. I’ll just stay on earth thanks, I want nothing to do with your f&#!. Then mother f#%@#&! mutant snakes. That’s not awesome. And one crispy-charred mother fucker hulked out and ripped most of the crew apart (I still don’t know what the f&#! his deal was, that wasn’t covered).

Anyways, that’s not the scary part.

MOTHER f#%@#&! ALIEN ABORTION.

That was not okay. I’ve never been this queasy during a movie since I was seven and I saw Scream (shut up, I was a baby).

So I saw Prometheus last night with two of my friends.

And I’m pretty sure now that neither of them will ever watch a movie with me ever again. Ever.

It’s not that I’m a terrible movie-goer, like I don’t talk that loud most of the time, just whisper something occasionally to the friend next to me, and not at inopportune times or anything.

It’s that this was Prometheus, which is the supposed prequel of sorts to the Alien movies, which I am the biggest nerd to ever exist about. Seriously, I watch the Alien movies religiously. I love the xenomorphs. I’ve even watched the Alien vs. Predator movies twice each because they had the xenomorphs in them, and those movies were terrible.

Which is why I was so adamant about going to see Prometheus the day it came out. When I saw the trailer for it while watching Family Guy on Hulu, I just about flipped my s$#! all over everything.

So we go there, and we get popcorn and we get Icees (or as Regal Cinemas call them, “Freeze Frames”), and we get our seats, and the movie starts. And it’s not exactly a slow beginning, but it’s not really action-heavy either. It was interesting to me, at least. And s$#! doesn’t really start to go down for a while, so everyone’s pretty chill.

Then s$#! starts to go down. And it’s not exactly really important s$#!, although it kind of is, it’s just ominous s$#!. And then it’s kinda chill for a while again, and then s$#! STARTS GOING DOWN.

Now, again, I cannot stress enough the significance of how much I love the Alien franchise. Like, it’s unhealthy how devoted I am to it. And to the xenomorph species. I have the original Alien movie on my iPod, and have seen the other 3 (yes, even the 3rd and 4th, which are notoriously not very good) several times each. I have the Aliens vs. Predator game on my laptop and have beaten the Alien campaign several times on several different difficulty levels. I have an addiction to the mere concept of them.

Keeping that in mind, when s$#! starts going down in Prometheus, it’s really scary, really gross, really horrific s$#!. The kind of s$#! that has my two friends breathing really heavily, making small scared noises, and tightening the grips we have on each other’s hands/arms into a death-squeeze. And after the s$#!-going-down scene they’re just panting next to me, eyes wide and in one case, whimpering softly. And then there’s me, and I am grinning my ass off next to them, totally at ease in terms of fear, but in full “holy-s$#!-that-was-so-f#%@#&!-awesome” fangirl mode. I even started laughing really quietly to myself. And they both turn to look at me like WHAT IN THE MOTHER OF f&#! ARE YOU LAUGHING ABOUT YOU PSYCHOTIC BITCH.

And after that s$#! goes down, a whole bunch of other s$#! goes down, and so on, getting progressively more intense/horrifying each time. And they’re getting more and more freaked out, and I’m getting more and more excited and awed. There was one scene out of the entire movie that I couldn’t really handle. And that was a graphic abdominal surgery scene, so I can’t really be blamed.

By the end of it, one of my friends was actually severely shaken and possibly emotionally traumatized, one of them was kind of awed and freaked out at the same time, and I was just flipping my s$#! at them over how awesome the movie was. And grinning. And laughing. And probably being generally terrifying.

So I’m not sure that either of them will ever go to see the sequel with me just because of my inappropriate reaction to everything that happened in this one, but it was actually such an awesome movie.

Review: Prometheus

Ridley Scott’s return to his Alien franchise attempts to rekindle the fascination and the fear in vastness of the dark universe, and for the most part succeeds. The film tries to explore the concept of evolution, where life comes from, and, if humans were created, for what purpose? Prometheus walks on eggshells while treating this topic, by allowing characters to believe what they choose to, I assume so that the movie can be accessible to people of any faith, but that’s just what I took away from it. When the vessel Prometheus touches down, we watch as humanity struggles to discover the reasons for their own beginnings and the evolution of a new species by trial and error within a matter of hours, ultimately becoming the traditional Xenomorph that we all know, love and s$#! out pants in fear of.
The movie has a bigger A-lister cast than it really needs to. Guy Pierce’s role as Weyland is almost unnecessary, Charlize Theron is the hot cold bitch in charge, and Noomie Rapace doesn’t hold up to the standards of Sigourney Weaver as a lead. While all these characters work fine for what they need to do, they’re given to actors who are capable of much more. However, it is Michael Fassbender who steals the show as Weyland android, David. The complexity of Davids motivations (or programing, I guess) drives the movie forward, keeps the audience captivated by his performance and works as an extension of the commentary on the creation of life.
Obviously this wouldn’t be an Alien movie if it didn’t pick off the crew one by one until there’s only one female left alive, and Prometheus does this, but not in the traditional way of a single, or army of Xenomorphs, but in several other causes. Therefore, when the movie starts to pick up in the action, it’s a bit confusing to watch if you don’t know what the movie is doing right away. In terms of traditional plot work the movie tends to make revelations in places that feel very tacked on that are ultimately obvious or simply unnecessary, but the story overall is paced well.
As a result, Prometheus, while terrifying at times, is much less a horror action film than it is a beautifully made space epic that witnesses the creation of a new life form when human’s get themselves involved in matters that are not their own, and witnessing this evolutionary process alone was worth seeing for me.

Despite liking-but-not-loving Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic Alien, Prometheus was easily my second most-anticipated film of the year (The Dark Knight Rises is first, of course, because nothing can trump my anticipation for that). And, it was one of my most anticipated films for a reason: Prometheus’s marketing campaign was one of the most teasing, provocative, secretive, and exciting ones to come around in a long time. Immediately, after the first Alien-esque teaser, everybody was hyped. Was it a prequel… or not? What aliens will be in it? And while it isn’t the direct prequel some people had hoped for, for me, it’s definitely the most thought-provoking and one of the most exciting films of the year so far. And while my expectations were high, it definitely succeeded them. Prometheus follows a crew of space explorers who go searching for the origins of mankind on a distant planet. Obviously, things don’t go as planned…

One of the first things that’s been intriguing about Prometheus since the beginning was its cast. Most

excitingly, it had Michael Fassbender, who, in my opinion, will have his popularity skyrocket in the next few months. He’s got a career ahead of him. It made it all the better when we learned that Fassbender would be playing the crew’s synthetic human being (a robot, and a staple of the Alien franchise). So how does Fassbender do? Well, I must say, while I haven’t seen Shame, I can honestly say that this is the best performance we have seen him in. Yes, he was great as Magneto in last year’s X-Men: First Class, but in this film, he walks away with nearly every scene he’s in, all while making it look so damn easy. He’s a believable and incredibly engrossing actor, able to make every single movement in this film precise and defined… well, like a robot. Fassbender delivers the best performance in the film by far, but there’s still more to acknowledge. Idris Elba, as the ship captain Janek, is truly a cool guy in his role and I’m highly anticipating him taking on a lead role in next year’s sci-fi epic, Pacific Rim. Then there’s the stone cold Charlize Theron, much more toned down from The Evil Queen, but perhaps just as menacing as a company employee sent to accompany our two lead scientists. Speaking of our two lead scientists, we have Noomi Rapace of Swedish Dragon Tattoo fame playing the nice, innocent lead girl just fine as well as her slightly rude to the android, kind of cocky boyfriend Holloway, played with a cool vibe by Logan Marshall-Green. Finally, and if you’ve seen the film you’ll get this, there’s a certain actor who goes under intense age make-up to look like an old man and while a lot of people are actually complaining about it, I would say that if I didn’t know which actor it was, I would say he’s pretty unrecognizable.

The plot of this film has been one of much discussion for months, probably because, even though we do have the incredibly secretive Batman sequel coming up, it was definitely the plot we knew the least about. We knew in some way, and in some shape or form or another, it would connect back to Alien. But how? Well, that’s a question I just can’t answer for you. You’ll have to sit in the theater and witness it for yourself. And what a thing it is to witness. While Alien was a claustrophobic, contained, and generally small-scale sci-fi horror film, this film is a sprawling, grand, sci-fi epic about discovery, the origins of mankind and more. More than that, it’s a true “be careful what you wish for” kind of movie, which makes it all the more fun because when sh*t hits the fan, it just gets all the more exciting. And boy does sh*t hit the fan. There are truly some amazingly, nail-bitingly intense scenes in this film, one of which I think will go down in the sci-fi thriller encyclopedia as being one of the most intense and well-done “gross-out” scenes in the last couple of decades. And while Prometheus does have its share of effective, intense scares, it never loses its true epic tone of grandiose, especially in a scene near the end of the film that was intense, epic, and surprisingly heartfelt.

This is epic summer filmmaking at its apex, mainly because it doesn’t only excite and scare, it also truly makes you think. This isn’t by any means an action blockbuster and come to think of it, there aren’t any action set pieces to speak of. However, the whole film has some truly great, dialogue-driven scenes that really make you think about philosophy and creation long after you leave the theater. It’s definitely not for the shoot-em-up audience, but in a sense of ideas and theories, it’s just as exciting, if not more so.

Of course, a major complaint people have about this film is that it doesn’t answer all the big questions it answers. And to quote the most famous movie of all time “frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.” Prometheus answers all the questions it needs to, leaving a thirst for a sequel to develop inside of you while still allowing you to relish in how awesome what you just watched was. And anyways, was anybody thinking… by the end of the film, about the big questions it posed in its first thirty minutes? There’s even a line pointing out that, by that point, is it even relevant anymore? But if you still want to know, I have no doubt that Prometheus, if it gets one (and I really hope it does), will answer the big questions in its sequel that it so rightfully deserves and sets itself up for. If I had some complaints, though, I would say that I wish it took some more time to develop some of the supporting characters like Janek (Idris Elba) or Vickers (Charlize Theron), or even Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) simply because it would allow for more pay-off towards the end of the film. Also, while Prometheus gets really intense, it sometimes seems the intensity pays off a little too quickly, and not as shockingly, as one might hope.

Most of all, Prometheus is an exciting experience, from its sweeping and beautiful opening shots (set to the equally beautiful score) to the final moments, which are just as good. It’s definitely one of the best films of the year so far, and while it seems to be fairly divisive with audiences, I feel it will be one of the most talked about films of the year. Oh yeah, and how could I forget: the film looks amazing. The design, the visual effects, and the stunning set-pieces and ship at the center of the film are all Oscar-worthy and top-notch. This is most definitely the best sci-fi film in over a decade.

FINAL GRADE: A-

So, did anyone else see Prometheus?

My thoughts, with possibly some spoilers so I’ll put them below the cut.

Who is Noomi Rapace? I want to know because I have a crush on her now. Her character was kind of… not the brightest, but she is so pretty. Can I have cheekbones like that when I grow up?
I didn’t know it was a prequel to Alien when I saw the trailer, so I was wondering why the hell is reminded me so much of Alien. When I heard that it was I went “Oh! Makes perfect sense!” One of our friends had no idea the whole entire time, which must have sucked.

Oh my god, tokophobics do not watch this. f#%@#&! hell, that was the worst thing ever. My fallopian tubes probably just tied themselves in knots.
When that thing broke his arm… no. Just no.
Blondes are evil, apparently.
The whole thing is chock-full of Body Horror and violence.
That dude was a really convincing robot. And creepy.

Worst part:

I cannot. f#%@#&!. stand. how stupid the people always are in the Alien movies. The moral of the story is “do not let uneducated people in space”. For supposed scientists, they knew jack s$#! about how science works. Or how basic safety measures work. Just because you can breathe the air or touch stuff doesn’t mean you should. You have no idea what kind of diseases or parasites could be living on another planet. Or what harm you could do. And when you do medical/surgical stuff to a specimen that could be dangerous, you cover your face. And when somebody’s sick, you quarantine them. Even if you have to kill them to do it. In the first alien when the guy is hurt and Sigourney Weaver is like “No, don’t let him on the ship”, nobody listens and they all die horribly. Except the cat and the only person who is not a total moron.

So Prometheus was pretty great.

Visually, it was mind-blowing. Intensely horrific in a good way, and the kind of blood and gore that I like, the “holy s$#! I can’t believe they’re actually pulling this off and it looks amazing” kind of gore. The story was pretty good, and I like how I still wasn’t sure how it was connected to the Alien series until the very last scene of the movie.

I wish Guy Pearce hadn’t played the old dude. It was painfully obvious that it was a young actor; they should have just gotten a really old dude to play a really old dude….
And Noomi Rapace is a great actress, but her accent needed attention. They should have just kept her as Swedish, but those things aren’t really important I guess.
Charlize Theron was delightfully creepy, as she was in Snow White and the Huntsman, and she perfectly fell into the role of resident bitch.
Michael Fassbender was a perfect robot, I guess. It didn’t seem too hard.

So there’s a short little review. Basically it was amazing and my eyes want more!

A Proper Opinion: Ridley Scott’s Prometheus

Ridley Scott’s latest directorial effort, Prometheus, is an aesthetic and visual delight amongst a tale alluding to grand social themes.

Scott’s Blade Runner and Alien are two of the most important science-fiction films of all time and elements from those stories are prominent in Prometheus.

Although the movie feels like Alien, almost explicitly in fact, I would say the themes fall more in line with those of Blade Runner: questions about what it is to be alive and what it is to create life.

Noomi Rapace, a doctor leading a scientific exploration, is a formidable protagonist. Michael Fassbender anchors the film as an omnipresent android; a post-Blade Runner-replicant type of creation.

I thoroughly enjoyed Prometheus as a true science-fiction film for a new generation; it is also a testament to science-fiction films of the past, especially those of Ridley Scott himself.

Prometheus Review

This isn’t really a review necessarily, just a few thoughts about Prometheus and a reaction to certain trends in film criticism which I’ve wanted to dissect for a little while now. I think film criticism can be very interesting, and heck—talking about movies can be just as enjoyable as watching them. But there are the few themes which keep popping up in reviews of this movie (and a lot of other movies this summer) which have been nagging at me a little bit.

An excruciatingly nerdy and spoiler-ridden wall of text lurks below this cut. If this essay was a person, it would have a neckbeard and wear a fedora.



Survival-horror isn’t exactly a genre known for its strong character development, and Prometheus definitely straddles that murky space where survival horror and traditional sci-fi meet. The majority of negative reviews aimed at this film ultimately boil down to the following two complaints: thin plot and next to no character development. I’ll grant you the first, but I want to take a second to address the second. There was definitely more character development in Prometheus than the majority of reviewers give it credit for, but most of it was captured in small gestures.

You might read certain reviews (hi NYT) and think that for a movie to be comprehensible, every character needs to be a reliable narrator—and that if an important narrative development isn’t literally stated in the dialogue or depicted on screen then it didn’t take place. This is pretty much the movie critic’s equivalent of ‘pics or it didn’t happen’. So, just for the hell of it, let’s dissect one of Prometheus’s opening scenes to death and see what we can extract from it.

We’re introduced to David 8 a few days before the Prometheus arrives at its final destination. The human members of the crew have spent the last two years in stasis, leaving David to develop his own peculiar daily routine which largely involves roaming the halls of the ship, playing solo basketball, receiving advanced foreign language instruction and perhaps most interestingly of all, obsessively watching and re-watching Lawrence of Arabia. He’s completely enthralled by the film; just watch the expression on his face during this scene, a mix of intense concentration, recognition and something resembling enjoyment (an emotion the audience is later assured that androids can’t experience).

Lawrence of Arabia, the perpetual outsider, is a fitting role model for an android. In spite of his cultured English upbringing and considerable ethnographic knowledge of Arabian desert tribes, Lawrence was an outsider in both cultures. His association with tribal societies made him suspect to the English, whose aspirations in the region were imperialistic, and the tribes never entirely trusted him even after he learned their language, participated in their rituals and (perhaps to his detriment) meddled in their politics. As an android, David is intensely isolated. He superficially resembles a human and has spent considerable time studying their behavior, but his relationship with the human crew is closest to that of the anthropologist/informant. After years of intensive study, he can mimic their gestures—say the right things and make the appropriate expressions—but he lacks native context and the underlying meaning of their performance eludes him.

So what to make of his obsession? He’s almost entirely based his human performance on Peter O’Toole’s interpretation of Lawrence of Arabia. His diction, the cadence of his speech, even his grooming habits all speak to hours spent memorizing this character’s every action.

But the real question here is who the performance is for. Lawrence of Arabia’s identity is something that David has strongly latched onto, and that attachment can be interpreted in several ways. Is Lawrence of Arabia a role model—a human exemplar whose actions David has committed to memory to make his own human performance more authentic? Does David identify with him as the other—in which case, is his attempt to recreate his appearance and mannerisms a way of marking himself as an outsider? That could be interpreted as a rebellious gesture. He knows that he will never pass as a true human and comports himself appropriately—he’s outwardly polite and obsequious, but deep down he’s nursing a healthy dose of arrogance, knowing that he possesses special knowledge that no one on board can ever hope to attain.

How long has he been practicing this performance and how long has he maintained it? The audience only sees him the day before the human crew awakes, so we have no way of knowing how long he’s kept this up. Sitting on the couch in front of the movie, we watch him meticulously dye and style his hair to match Peter O’Toole’s. Is this grooming routine something he’s kept up for the entire two years of the journey, something he’s developed along the way, or the final preparation for the performance he’s planned for the human crew? David quotes lines from the film several times throughout Prometheus—but none of the human crew members get the reference. So is his appearance and behavior meant to influence how the human crew perceives him, or is it about his own self-perception?

Who knows!

And that’s exactly what makes movies fun. There’s a whole lot of information about David’s character contained in that little scene, and things start to make sense in one way or another as the movie progresses. Why spell that out? It makes his character considerably creepier if the audience isn’t entirely sure what his motivations are.

When David’s creator says he lacks a soul and all that entails, should we believe him? Is he a reliable narrator? (More importantly, what the hell was up with that awful makeup…) When David says he lacks the ability to experience emotion, should we believe him? He’s pretty much the exact opposite of a reliable narrator. If anything, the movie takes great pains to show just how untrustworthy he is.

I just don’t understand why a person, much less a professional movie critic, would base their understanding of a movie’s plot on dialogue. That’s the most unreliable source of information presented to the audience, for heaven’s sake! Sometimes the audience has to pay attention to the small details. A plot isn’t murky just because some stand-in for the viewer isn’t there to narrate every plot twist. And sometimes you have to read between the lines to see character development.

(If you haven’t seen Lawrence of Arabia, then yeah, you probably missed out on that whole angle—but really, you should see that movie! It’s a classic for a reason!)

Prometheus Movie Review

So I watched Prometheus yesterday. I walked into the theater with rather high hopes. They were definitely met. Prometheus was a fantastic not so prequel prequel that succeeds as an Alien movie as well as a movie of its own identity. Certainly what Prometheus was: a story in the Alien universe that leaves room to grow. Ridley Scott was at it again, demonstrating his mastery behind the camera. The acting was rather strong (FASSBENDER!), but a few characters were a little bit one dimensional, who behaved questionably (yes, I’m aware that it’s a horror film), but they were still amicable at the end of it all.

Noomi Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) did a spectacular job in her role as Elizabeth Shaw, the archeologist/main character. What I loved about her was that she was different from Ripley, and she had her own defining characteristics (perserverance) that separate her from her predecessor. She is her own true character that you certainly root for, with an interesting past that just catches your attention. As for the acting, Rapace was quite strong (most relevant in the rather dramatic scenes) and she really succeeded in her role. Her romantic counterpart, Charlie Holloway, played by Logan Marshall (Devil, Brooklyn’s Finest) also performed rather well. The whole cast did, really. Charlize Theron (Monster, Hancock), Idris Elba (Thor, 28 Weeks Later) and Guy Pearce (LA Confidential, Hurt Locker) were strong in their roles as Meredith Vickers, Janek Ford, and Peter Weyland respectively. However, the man who stole the show, of course, Michael f#%@#&! Fassbender. His performance as the android David was fantastic. The way he methodically played the role was superb. He acted as an android, to the point that you truly believed that he was a robot. All the attention to detail with the way he spoke, moved, and portrayed his character was just f#%@#&! phenomenal. His demeanor and his ability to act without portraying emotions, while also hinting to them really made him pop out. It was Fassbender’s acting performance that really tied the whole movie (in terms of the characters) together. Absolutely phenomenal.

Although the acting was great, the story was not completely mind blowing, but then again, that wasn’t what we needed to see. Alien wasn’t either, but it was just such an interesting and entertaining film. However, Prometheus does its job in that it exposes the back story to Alien while also standing out as its own film and builds its own story with unique characters that weren’t just complete cop outs from Alien, Aliens, and the like. However, the true strong point of this film was the visual effects and set design. It was beautiful. It really makes you feel like you are in the spaceship and the planet. It was visually captivating (watch it in 3D, it’s done at 3D’s best) and the visuals really drew you in. That was such a key part to this movie and its success: you felt like you were exploring with the crew. That’s part of all the fun, you feel like you are exploring everything just as they are, because you are!

All in all, Prometheus was a fantastic movie that certainly succeeded in my eyes, as well as in the opinions of many others. Definitely a movie that you should check out if you are a fan of movies in general, science fiction films, horror, or if you just need something to hold you over for The Dark Knight Rises.

The Prometheus early buzz reviews from the US are really upsetting me. I just read an article on slashfilm (whom I hold in great regard and respect as film bloggers) and the film was torn apart more than Elizabeth Shaw’s stomach during the chilling ‘DIY C-Section’ scene.

The film was visually a credit to the team behind It. Something that I personally feel is wasted slightly unless it’s viewed in IMAX 3D.

Which to be honest, the reviews aren’t arguing. It’s the plot that’s got everyone’s knickers in a twist. Yes the film asks questions that man has asked 100000000x1000000000 over, or whilst being excessively high and trying to mog out friends, but I think the beauty behind the fact that you don’t get answers is open interpretation. If they gave answers everyone would be like ‘oh that’s bullshit, what a s$#! theory’ BLAH BLAH BLAH. Yes the story lacked in areas, I personally would have liked a more philosophical approach to certain things and there are ALOT of places the film could have went…

But as it stands, if a sequel is spawned, maybe that’s something that can be delved into…

Plus Michael Fassbender & Charlize Theron & Idris Elba. Love them all.

My rambling prometheus review. I talk about primarily about the last scene of the movie, so if you haven’t seen it, there’s probably no point in reading this:

So I got into a big debate with a bunch of people I really like and respect on the internets the other night. The debate was sort of centered around my loathing of Aliens. And my feelings that it missed out on a lot of the things that I am interested in as an Alien film, as well as missing several marks within what it was itself seeming to attempt to do.

That said, I appreciate that it exists, because it was a massive influence on really brilliant work by creators I like.

It is just for me, what attracted me to the Alien series more than anything was HR Giger’s artwork. His art no matter when I look at it, or how many times, always has a profound impact on me. His work touches a core in me, and I find the experience of viewing them extremely moving.

For me when I look at a Giger work there’s an insane sexual nightmare energy, combined with these transgender/transhuman flourishes that really speak to me personally. They make me feel dirty. They scare me in some ways. In others I find them extremely empowering. They operate as these hyper conscious hyroglyphs for a world that I feel extremely personally. And then on another level they are ecstatic sublime religious works that come at once from the future of where we are going, and a past we can never remember.

I feel that these works of Giger hugely influence the brilliance of the first Alien film, and to a much much lesser extent the third film. The Alien franchise sometimes even in it’s best attempts to do otherwise(Aliens) is unable to escape this dark monolith that Giger has put as it’s backdrop. It’s why all of the films end up being about motherhood, the body, sex, live, death, rebirth, our beginnings and our ends as a species.

This is a long jog to go to get to this, but it is because these are the things which I care about within the Alien franchise, and because these are the things which move me about it—that I really enjoyed and care about the new Prometheus film. From my vantage point, the new Prometheus film is all Giger no filler. We cut away the crap of now what…30 years of genre trappings and cliches which have showed to bog down the series and sci-fi filmmaking as a whole, and begin a return back to the primordial Giger soup. There are references to every one of these trappings through the series. Like faint echos reverbing against the shores of what Prometheus is about. And every one of these trappings is given it’s faint moment, presented in it’s origin state, and then discarded for it’s inadequacy, like watching the archetypal burglar root through the junk looking for the thing which is most valuable to that which he is stealing from. It would almost work as parody, where the whole thing not done in such a serious considered manner.

What makes Prometheus so powerful is that it questions existence and life and faith over and over through itself to the point the questions no longer mean anything. They are all ridiculous. As much a soundtrack as a plot point. When we get to that final scene and we’re watching this hemaphroditic life, death, rebirth—sex/murder/fratricide—that is the answer to our questions. But it’s not something you can explain. Ridley Scott gave us the purest distillation of HR Giger yet in the entire series. He gave us this image that IS existence, it IS sex, it IS death, it IS life. It IS why even. But we can’t perceive the truthes that this image imparts as a linguistic exercise. It is a truth that you experience AS an experience unto itself. You can understand it as this fractally unfolding explosion in your brain that unfolds and unfolds until it surpasses understanding. Both within the fictional universe that Giger and Scott birthed, and without. It is an image onto which we impart our myths and explanations. It is proto-why.

I liked Prometheus because it didn’t in the end try and give me bullcrap. Plot. Characterization. The trappings of a linear story that you can experience in a satisfying bite are dismissed for raw information. A work that explodes out in every direction at any given moment without concern for connection to the next moment. It is not concerned because it is all connected in this overriding fugue of sex, love, hate, life, death, murder, mother, child, man, woman, technology.

I like it a lot. So there you go. I doubt any of this is coherent. Ha.
